ome have wondered how the chosen themes ofth is magazineancient mysteries...futurescience...unexplained anomaliescan fit

together under the same umbrella, so wed liketo offer a few words of explanation. We see this publication as a voice in the great

debate currently raging over the dimensions of thehuman soul. On one hand are those who see thehuman race as li tt le more than a mass of consumers ofmanufactured stuffacademic doctrine included. Bytheir w ay of thinking we are all p roducts of theDarwinian struggle, and nothing more. Whateverclaim w e have to worth and dignity is in ourcollective advancement since leaving the cavesjust a few millennia ago, and from w hich, we aretold, w e began, for the fi rst t ime, the laboriousascent to our present l ofty height. Noti ons ofimmortality and transcendent individualpossibi li ties are said to be il lusions, born ofsocial condi tioning, and nothing more. Onthe other side, how ever, are those who seeunl imited capacit ies in each of usnotexcluding personal immor tality. Never mindthat the human psyche we find today isclearly still suffering from many ancientwounds. The evolutionary scheme is seen by these asfar grander, more subtle and, indeed, more sublime than mere survival ofthe fit test.

From this perspective, it seems that most people today labor i nbondage to a shriveled concept of their own identity. Programmed toaccept the authority of the dominant scientif ic/ secular/ humanistestablishment, they have given up on exalted possibilities within

themselves. The rulingacademically rootededif ice has succeeded inconvincing most of us that its formulations are virtually settled matters, well beyond challenge. We are left to play our assigned parts and nothingmore.

Atlant is Rising Magazinesimply does not accept this state of affairsand, in our own w ay, we are participating in the grow ing campaign tochange it. We believe the underlying logic, or reasonableness, on whichthe establishment bases its authori ty i s fallacious, if not corrupt , and w eintend wherever possible to expose this unfor tunate state of affairs.

We believe that solving the mysteries surrounding our ancientorigins is fundamental, because it is in know ledge of the unseen greatnessof our roots that we are empow ered to spread our branches to the stars. Byfuture science we refer to the limitless achievement remaining to beunfurled as we rediscover our true potential. And in unexplained

anomalies we see revealed the basic failures of the academic elite to offersati sfactory answers to li fes deepest questi ons.

We are grateful for your support to our efforts thus far and we hope wecan continue to count on you.

Velikovskys MartyrdomJohn Kettler notes that Carl Sagan

led the rigged 1974 AAAS meeting inSan Francisco (Symposium on Veli-kovskys Challenge to Science) whichwas designed to bury Velikovskysclaims once and for all.

What was Sagans interest in Veli -kovsky?Empirical science gathers facts, pro-

poses theories that explain the factsand uses the theories to predict addi-tional facts. Finding a predicted factverifies the theory w hich t hen itself be-comes a scientific fact that can be usedas a basis for additional theories.

Velikovsky, using historical records, theorized that Venus was a late addi-tion to the solar system. The predictivefact he used as possible verification ofhis theory was the temperature ofVenus which he claimed would beeight times the temperature of Earth.

Mass/gravity, a basic scientific factthat cuts across all scientific disci-plines, uses Newtonian Mechanics todescribe the solar system. NewtonianMechanics prohibits the addition ofplanets to the solar system. Veli-kovskys theory that Venus was a newplanet opposed Newtonian Mechanics. It could not be correct.

Given the theorys impossibility andthe improbability of Venuss tempera-ture ever being verified, astronomersfelt safe using Velikovskys predictionof a hot Venus to ridi cule the man him-self.

    Astronomers were therefore more

than perplexed w hen Velikovskys pre-diction turned out to be accurate. Notonly were they faced with the embar-rassment of having an object of theirridicule proven right, the basic as-tronomy discipline was in danger ofbeing discredited. Either NewtonianMechanics was wrong, or worse, astro-nomical data were not subject to theempirical methodology. This later pos-sibil it y was devastating because of sci-entific comity under which one branchof science accords uncritical validity to

    down the memory hole of

    science.With the greenhouse

effect now a scientifi c factin astronomy, i t w as ac-corded uncri tical accep-

tance by other branches ofscience. Sciences con-

cerned w ith t he chemistryand physics of the atmos-

phere began to proposetheories about the cause

of t he greenhouse effect ,greenhouse gasses, and

their effect, global w arming. The problem with this, of course, is

that Sagan only created his greenhousetheory to give the appearance thatVenuss heat had been predicted by as-tronomy. The theorys predictive facthad preceded the theory. Designedonly to predict an existing fact, thetheory w as demonstrated by it s asser-tion.

This is not exactly a rigorous appli-cation of empirical methodology andcould even be called cheating. Thegreenhouse theory w as allowed to passthe empirical test designed by the sci-entific method to verify theoriesw ithout being required to take the test.

    Having accepted an untested theory

as fact, unrelated branches of sciencenow reach easily discreditable conclu-sions about global warming based onthe untested theory, and charges ofjunk science fly from every directi on.An unintended result of Sagans effortto bury Velikovskys successful predic-tion that Venus was hot, then, was notan end to scientific controversy, butrather an intensification of it.

    Peter BrosSpri ngfi eld, VA

Cayces Cari bbeanIn 1960, three of us left Fort Lauder-

dale in a small plane for Nassau in the

Bahamas, I being in the passenger seatbehind the co-pilot. I presume ourflight path was a direct line, generallyeast-southeast. We passed over smalllandmasses, and to my recollection, had been in flight some 30-40 minutes(not certain about this). Whilewatching the water below (we wereprobably at 2500-3000 feet altitude),which was shallow, there appearedperfect circles (I judged 100-150 yardsin diameter), perfectly spaced apart

    the scientific facts empiri-

cally veri fied by anotherbranch of science. As-tronomy could not affordto have its empirical con-clusions brought into ques-tion within the broader sci-entific community.

As a result, astronomershad to take action to avoidbeing hoisted on their ow npetard, the discovery of apublicly ridiculed predic-tion verifying an impos-sible theory. Action took the form ofthe young, photogenic astronomer,

Carl Sagan. The plan was simp le: Re-place Velikovskys prediction with oneshowing that Venuss heat was empiri-cally predictable from accepted astro-nomical observations made prior to itsdiscovery.

Unfortunately, the only fact astrono-mers could use to predict Venuss heatprior to its discovery was the Venusiancloud cover and no reputable astron-omer could venture an explanationhow Venuss temperature, almost fourtimes what was needed to boil water, could be predicted from its cloudcover.

That s where the young Sagan came

in. He had no reputation. The astronomical community called

one of its rare televised press confer-ences to feature Sagan claiming he hadlong known Venus was hot because itscloud cover produced a greenhouse ef-fect that caused the clouds to trap heatjust like a greenhouse traps heat onEarth. There were a number of prob-lems with the analogy, not the least ofwhich was the fact that clouds de-crease the heat in a greenhouse ratherthan intensify it. If inserting a layer ofclouds around a greenhouse could pro-duce the temperatures recorded onVenus, the oil industry would have

long since gone the way of the dino-saurs.

But with the worlds astronomersbehind him, Sagan was able to makethe analogy appear reasonable and hisprediction replaced Velikovskys pre-diction, allowing the empirical purityof astronomy to remain intact. Sagan,in arranging the 1974 AAAS sympo-sium, was merely putting the formalstamp of scientific legitimacy on hisafter-the-fact prediction, disappearingVelikovskys successful prediction

LETTERSmove through traffic in such a straightline. Besides, surely there was dirt onthe street, horse flop if nothing else. The deep clean cuts I was looking atshould have filled up and bounced thewheels out onto the unmarred pave-ment. Besides, a moving stream withthe slightest bend will increase thatbend as the water seeks the outer bankof the bend and erodes it. A rapidlymoving vehicle should do the same

thing, but it had not happened. Then in a Roman quarry in Sici ly our

guide described how the stones weremoved by hand on pairs of i ron w heelsjoined by an i ron axle. Now that madesense. If l arge stones were broughtthrough town for construction and re-pair with the same contraption, theweight could have cut the grooves. Theworkers would have moved veryslowly with ample time to keep theirtrack straight or to follow a previoustrack. Perhaps they thought that bystaying in one track they were mini-mizing damage to the road.

Mining probably never stopped inEurope after Roman times. Even in theDark Ages they never stopped usingmetal. So it would be no great stretchto imagine that the technology changedlittle. People hate change. There is anancient preconception that dogs use tothis day that is almost surely wrong andwill within the century bring down ourcivilization like so many before (ex-cepting of course Atlantis, which had aperfectly good excuse for dying out). But no one is so bold as to challenge itin print.

At all events, if British mines werestill being worked with Roman

methods and Roman standards, it is nostretch to think that the same gaugesurvived, not only in the mines de-scribed in the article but also in manyothers. And it is no stretch to t hink thatthis reluctance to consider change haskept the same gauge in use long afterthe seven-foot gauge was proven su-perior.

How far back before Rome the stan-dard was used is beyond me, but itdoes appear that the ancient Egyptiansmoved a lot of stone.

Thank you for a delightful andthought-provoking article.

I think otherwise. I believe that wewere near the Gulf Stream, which wan-ders somewhat, and in so doing it mayhave uncovered whatever this was(and is). It has been a puzzle for allthese years and probably will remainso for my lifetime. Perhaps satellitephotos might shed some light, if theywere available.

While no one knows howto place the Cuba discovery within afamiliar geological context, it seemsclear that, if the site is indeed artificial, its age is more likely to comport withPlatos dates for the sinking of Atlantis,9500 B.C., than with any orthodox ge-ology. alifornia-based cartographer RonSmit h believes he has identif ied, in

the Bahamas, the location of the greatcanal which Plato said surrounded theroyal cit y of At lantis.

In an area betw een Cat I sland(which, from the air, resembles a dol-phin) and Little San Salvador, east of Bi-mini, Smith has found two lengthy con-centrically curved rocky structuresvisible above the water which appearto form the banks of what was once agreat circular canal. The two structuresare identified on charts as LongRocks. The currently visible features

    C

are of coral encrusted limestone (coral,by the way, can be dated). The channel

between the islands is at a depth con-sistent with a once-navigable waterwayand, according to Smit h, the remains ofwhat appears to have once been a verylong canal are easily discerned.

Longtime Caribbean exp lorer and ar-chaeologist William Donato says circlescoinciding with the islands would indi-cate a center 3.22 miles away. InPlatos story the distance was 3.2 miles.Smith also reports that the area be-tween Bimini and Andros has dimen-sions corresponding to Platos great

plain. Moreover, Smit h also believeshe has identified other structures con-

sistent with Platos account, includingthe Grand Canal outlet to the sea. He isnow actively campaigning for furtherexploration of the area.

Incidentally, recent satellite photosof nearby Bermuda show faint circularpatterns which appear to be the cra-tered remains of significant meteorhits, providing support for those, likethe late German scholar Otto Muck, who have suggested that the destruc-tion of Atlantis w as the result of meteoror asteroid hits.

n a startling admission, mainstreamscience has conceded that it cannot

explain near-death experiences(NDE). A study published in the pre-stigious British medical journal TheLancet (December 15) acknowledgesthat standard medical factors, such asmedication and the duration of uncon-sciousness, cannot explain the phe-

    nomenon.The so-called near-death experi-

ence has been widely reported formany years. Anecdotes, originatingwith patients or victims who had beenpronounced clinically dead, yetsomehow survived, typically have hadmany elements in common. Many de-scribe out-of-the-body experiences inwhich often they witness attempts attheir own resuscitation by doctors. Also frequent are descriptions of en-tering into a great light and receivingguidance from higher spiritual beings.Until the Lancet article skeptics haveinsisted that such reports are essen-tially hallucinatory, b rought on by a re-duction of oxygen to the brain orsomething of the sort. I n theLancet re-port, Dr. Pim van Lommel of the Neth-erlands and his colleagues say that theirstudy clearly rules out all such standardrationalizations.

Previous studies have asked patientsto recount t heir experiences long afterthey occurred but this time initial inter-views were carried out immediatelyafter the event. Researchers found that62 of 344 patients (18%) who had re-covered after being pronounced clini-cally dead had near-death experi-

ences. Of these, six were later foundnot to have had an NDE, but 41 weresaid to have had a deeper core expe-rience. For the latter the details re-mained very clear when they were re-interviewed eight years later and theyseemed to have gone through a signifi-cant spiritual transformation showingless fear of death and a strong belief inthe afterlife. We did not show thatpsychological, neurophysiological, orphysiological factors caused these ex-periences after cardiac arrest,' the re-searchers wr ite.

xplorers in Cuzco, Peru are re-porting that they have unearthed

what they believe is a doorway whichonce led into a temple in the Andesmountains.

The discovery in early December, claims National Culture Institute Di-rector Edwin Benavente was in down-town Cuzco, 13 feet beneath a colonialera house. The seven-foot highdoorway, he says, is similar to onesfound at Sacsayhuaman, and could bepart of a grand complex and is prob-ably a doorway that led to the archaeo-logical site of Sacsayhuaman.

Archaeologists have discovered azigzagging wall similar to the one atSacsayhuaman that is buried beneath

Cuzco's modern-day buildings and thatpoints toward the recently discovereddoorw ay, he said.

In Atlanti s Rising, Issue #19, DavidHatcher Childress reported on evi-dence for a great ancient tunnel systemwhich may stil l exist in South Americawith one of many possible entrances inthe vicinity of Sacsayhuaman.

his essay touches on alienswhere they are and what en-ergies they might command. In a past issue of Infini te

Energymagazine (No. 29, January/ February n 2000), w e fea-tured optical physicist Dr. Bruce Maccabees article, ProsaicExplanations: The Failure of UFO Skepticism. Infinite En-ergy is not, of course, a magazine of UFO investigation, as Inoted in introducing Maccabees article. We are very inter-ested, however, in promoting open-minded discussion of evi-dence for major claimed anomalies in science beyond radicalnew energy sources. We are particularly concerned when-

ever the methodology of evidence handling is abused andmasqueraded as careful investigation, as is often done bysome skeptics.

For better or worse, aliens have entered the evolvingparadigm of how science is conducted. They will affect usall. Looking back on my own career in engineering, science, and journalism, I realize that a good part of it has emergedfrom an interest in the possibility of extraterrestrial lifealiens. In my teenage amateur astronomy days I w onderedpassionately about which planets in our solar system mightbe inhabited by intell igent li feor by anything wed recog-nize as life, let alone the intelligent variety. This was at theearly post-Sputnik beginning of the Space Age.

While doing course work at MIT toward my two degreesin aeronautical/astronautical engineering, I became most in-

terested in very advanced propulsion systemsones thatcould open the solar system for humankind, beyond the pa-thetic chemical rockets of then and today.

With sufficiently advanced propulsion, such as ion en-gines or fission-energized rockets that heat hydrogen propel-lant, we could at least visit more easily those places nearbywhere life might be found. Another link of past w ith present:The molten-core (liquid droplet core) fission nuclear rocketwas the subject of my masters thesis. Now defunct, the fis-sion rocket era of the 1960s might be reborn when low en-ergy nuclear reactions (LENR) can perform as reliably as orbett er than convent ional fissionsans the need for massiveneutron shielding.

To be frank, my interest in rocketry and aliens came fromthe basement. As did many others, I had a teenage romancew ith dangerous pyrotechnic igni tionsan outgrow th of early

1960s basement experiments with bombs and rockets. (Thiswas before the era of packaged model rockets, which arenow commonly available.) Basement bombing was a typ-ical rite of passage for apolitical, pre-terrorist-era male youth.(In 2000 such activities might land a teenage boy in jail. In1960, the fire marshal merely told me and my friends not todo such things any more, at least not with 0.75-inch diametercopper pipes stuffed with gunpowder!) Today officialdom issand-bagging us again. The DOE fire marshals and an aca-demic priesthood warns us away from much more significantexperiments: Stop! Dont do cold fusion. Alas, the morethings change, the more t hey stay the same.

Patience, aliens are coming. Paralleling rocketry, I grewinterested in the search for extraterrestrial civilizations viaradio-telescopes (then called CETI, now SETI) . This had justbegun with Frank Drakes brief microwave observation ofEpsilon Eridani and Tau-Ceti back in 1960Project Ozma. That search was in the water-holenear the 1420 MHz hy-drogen emission line. My fascination was intense and early.Long before Carl Sagan became a household name, as a 15-year-old I attended and taped one of his earliest lectures on

ext raterrestr ial li feon a portable (reel-to-reel!) tape recorderat a local junior college in New London, Connecticut. Carlwas a great salesman for aliens even then. He certainlyhelped sell me, a mathematics teachers and plumbers sonnot a scientist. I did not go into plumbing, but the waterfocus of my father and grandfather may have recapitulated it-self w hen I entered the cold fusionwater-as-fuelcontroversy.

As the noisy six ties wore on, i t became clear that the solarsystem, interesti ng as it seemed, was not enough. We justhad to plan for interstellar travel if we were ever to en-counter really interesting planets with intelligent beings. Es-pecially hard to find would be dumb ones (Carls words)like us, who might not have an interest in microwave sig-naling. There would be smart ones too. Some of t he earlybooks on SETI spoke of a Kardashev Type-II civilization,

which might have gotten control of the entire energy outputof it s star by wrapping it i n a durable cocoon. That w ould bequite a feat, but still just solar power writ large. We mightsee these societies, or so i t was suggested by FreemanDyson, by observing their infrared emissions. A KardashevType-III civili zation might command the energy output of anentir e galaxy.

This was all postulated with a straight face, with hardly athought about where the stupendous energies of KardashevType-III would come from. If it wasnt solar power, whatcould it be? That was left unanswered. It is amazing whatstuff can be discussed in polite academic circles, providing itdoesnt actually do anything or have any direct relevance tocontemporary technologies. But bring in a civilization-changing jar of heavy w ater that creates excess heator de-scribe experiments with free-energy aether motors (see myessay in the last issue of AR), and all hell breaks loose.

Maybe the aliens were deep into hot fusion, or perhapsantimatter annihilation? Later came speculation about blackholes and titanic energies that might be derived therefrom.Thermonuclear fusion, the nemesis of today, seemed to methen more reachable. One of my propulsion courses at MITincubated a paper that showed that Robert Bussards inter-stellar ramjet concept seemed to be on the right track. Hehad the idea of scooping up interstellar hydrogen that couldbe used ramjet-style in a fusion propulsion system. The rock-

With Apologies to Columbus:A Report on the ISAC Annual Conference

arly on the morning of October11, 2001, I went to the Los An-geles International Airport to get

    my flight to Columbus, Georgia,

where I was to speak at the annualmeeting of the Institute for the Studyof American Cultures. ISAC is dedi-cated to investigation of pre-Columbian and Native American cul-ture and history. Orthodox ac ademicopinion holds that aside from a briefvisit by Vikings, the Americas had nocontac ts with Old World cultures be-fore the time of Columbus. But ISACresearchers have reported abundantevidence of rec iprocal contac ts be-tween the Americas and a variety ofOld World culture centers, such as Eu-rope, India, China, and Egypt.

My road to C olumbus began quitea few years ago. When my book For-bidden Archeo logyfirst came out, itwas picked up by David Hatcher Chil-dress, who included it in his Adventures Unlimited mailorder catalogue.David then told the late J ean Hunt, president of the Louisiana Mounds So-ciety, about the book, and suggested that she publish a review in her so-cietys newsletter. J ean did get in touch with me, and did publish a very fa-vorable review. She became quite an enthusiastic supporter ofForbiddenArchaeology, and recommended it to many of her contacts in the earlyAmerican studies field. For example, she put me in touch with Bill Cote, whoinvited me to participate in the making of his classic television special TheMysterious Origins of Ma n, which was aired on NBC. She also recommendedForbidden Archa eologyto Dr. J oseph B. Mahan, then president of ISAC ,and to Vincent Mooney, an officer of ISAC . Mahan and Mooney separately

invited me to come to an ISAC conference, but that year I was alreadyscheduled to be doing a publicity tour for the launching ofThe Hidd en His-tory of the Human Rac e. J ust this past year, Vincent again invited me togive a paper at the annual ISAC conference, and I was happy to accept.Unfortunately, Vincent died before the conference took place.

I arrived at the Columbus airport, meditating on the irony of an organiza-tion dedicated to dimming Christopher Columbuss fame being headquar-tered here. I noted a distinct military atmosphere in the airport, which servesnearby Ft. Benning. After claiming my bag, I made my way to the confer-ence hotel. At an evening reception, I met Morton A. who had taken on most of the burden of orga-nizing the conference. I also met many of theconference speakers. At my table I had to turndown some of the drinks and snacks becausethey didnt fit in with the strict vegetarian diet Ifollow as a practitioner of the Hare Krishna re-

ligion. When I was explaining this, Richard Flavin, one of thespeakers sitting at my table, told me he had sometimes had

some vegetarian meals at the Hare Krishna temple in Boston.

My main interest is not pre-Columbian culture contac ts between the

    New and Old Worlds but the origin of anatomically modern humans. Ac-cording to orthodox scientists, humans of our type came into existenceabout one hundred thousand years ago. So what I look for is evidence thathumans of our type existed before that. In my ISAC lecture, I presented evi-dence for a human presence in the Americas that goes back more thanone hundred thousand years. Some of the cases I mentioned were the She-guiandah, Canada artifac ts (125,000 years); the Trenton, New J erseyhuman femur (114,000 years); the Calico, California artifacts (200,000 years);the Lawn Ridge, Illinois copper coin (200,000 years); the Hueyatlaco, Mexicoartifac ts (250,000 years); the Buenos Aires, Argentina skull (1 million years);

the Nampa, Idaho, humanfigurine (2 million years); theMiramar, Argentina flint ar-rowhead (3 million years);the California gold mine

skeletons and artifacts (50million years); the Mac oupinCounty, Illinois humanskeleton (about 300 millionyears); the AntelopeSprings, Utah human shoeprint (500 million years), andthe Dorchester, Massachu-setts metallic vase (600 mil-lion years).

Among the other lec-tures, one that especially caught my attention was Carl J ohannessens talkon Photographic Evidence of the Pre-Columbian Movement of PlantsAcross the Oceans. It featured photographs of gods and goddesses intemples in South India holding ears of corn. The temples are over one thou-

sand years old. Corn is native to the Americas, and according to standardhistorical reasoning, it should not have entered the Old World until after thevoyages of Columbus, about five hundred years ago.

The ancient Sanskrit writings not only say that humans existed millions ofyears ago but also that the Vedic culture of India had a worldwide pres-ence. Other speakers pointed out additional signs of contact betweenIndia and the Americas, such as lotus and elephant motifs on C entral Amer-ican temples. At the time the temples were constructed, way before Co-lumbus, the lotus and elephant were not, according to standard opinion, found in the New World. Someday I would like to do a very thorough studyof all of this evidence for contacts between India and the Americas (andother parts of the world) and put it together in a book.

Professor Stephen J ett, of the University of C alifornia at Davis, is one ofthe leading academic voices arguing in favor of pre-Columbian transo-ceanic contacts. He is presently working a scholarly book summarizing theevidence. His talk at Columbus showed that a variety of cultures had boththe ships and navigational skills to make voyages across oceans to the NewWorld in anc ient times.

In Columbus, I had the good fortune to meet Gloria Farley, the granddame of early American research. She said she had a lways wanted tomeet me because one of the more extreme anomalies that I documentedin Forbidden Archa eologycame from the town where she lives, Heavener,Oklahoma.

In 1928, Atlas Almon Mathis was working in a coa l mine two miles north ofHeavener. The shaft went down over ten thousand feet. Once, Mathis andother miners used dynamite to blast out a new room deep in the mine. Ina signed affadavit, Mathis said, The next morning, there were several con-

Yet they werefull of gravel, because I chipped one ofthem open with my pick, and it wasplain concrete inside. Mathis added,As I started to timber the room up, itcaved in, and I barely escaped. When I came back after the cave-in,a solid wall of these polished blockswas left exposed. About 100 to 150yards farther down our air core, an-other miner struck this same wall, or onevery similar. (Forbidd en Archae ology, p.809) The coa l at this level is almost 300 mil-lion years old.

Gloria was kind enough to give me a copy ofher book In Plain Sight: OldWorld Rec ords in Anc ient America, which fea-tures an encylopedic review of anomalous inscriptions on stone, shell, andmetal. Dr. Mahan said about this work: Anyone who reads this book cannever again believe that Columbus or even Leif Erickson discoveredAmerica. Evidence presented that Old World people were here centuriesbefore is in the form of translated writing on stone and related petroglyphs, which the author has carefully recorded for the past forty-five years.

Glorias talk at C olumbus was about new discoveries of Old World coins inNorth America.

Another old friend I met at Columbus was archaeologist Neil Steede. Wehad last met over the summer, in Vienna, where we had both spoken at theUnsolved Mysteries conference organized by Klaus Dona, in connectionwith his unprecedented exhibition of anomalous archaeologica l artifac tsgathered from museums and private collections around the world. Neil, Ilearned, was a vice president of ISAC . He is well known for his archaeoastro-nomical work, showing that the temple structure at Tihuanaco, Bolivia was

aligned to the solstice and equinoxpoints as they existed about 12,000years ago. At the ISAC conference inColumbus, he spoke about sundialsfound at Comalcalco, Mexico, andalso showed similarities between

Roman and Mayan dice. Neil hasalso been involved in some new workgoing on at the Hueyatlaco, Mexicosite, and he filled me in on some ofthe results.

Morton Harris asked me to give theafter dinner talk at the conferencebanquet. I spoke on the topic offraud in archaeology, going oversome of things I wrote about in mylast At lant is Rising column.

I can recommend the ISAC annualconference to At lant is Rising readersas an excellent opportunity to hearsome top quality lectures from an as-sortment of speakers, ranging fromuniversity professors to expert ama-teurs. The audience is small enoughthat there is plenty of opportunity forattendees to meet and conversewith the speakers over the course ofthe three-day event. For informationabout next years conference,

hat can a symbol on astone or a cave walltell us? If there is aHall of Records underthe paw of t he Sphinx,

noses being missed because we cantdecipher them?

It has been said, and rightly, thatnine-tenths of human history has beencarved in stone and the rest written inink. The stone tools of Cro Magnon andNeanderthal are studied, their cavepaintings easily read by knowledge-able eyes. We think we know whatthey meant to say, and these crude ren-derings give us a clear picture of whattheir l ives were like.

A sketch of a man carrying aweapon near a mammot h may haveconveyed the same meaning as a signon a modern highway, such as deercrossing. From the clear evidence, weknow that man co-existed with themammoth, as archaeologists of the farfuture will be able to say with authoritythat we of the twenty-first century co-existed with deer, and even what thesedeer looked like.

Some stone carvings found in var-ious parts of the world are enigmas tomost scientists as they seem to be inlanguages not common to t hat place, or

only the way a word was to besounded, but also a thought, conceptor abstract idea. On stone, the problemof correction was a serious one, andthe transfer to wax tablets was soonmade. The hieroglyphs, however, wereso intricate that a member of the new

profession, the scribe, ran out ofspace long before the message wascomplete, no matter how small hissymbols were inscribed.

Then the discovery which still ismaking it possible for you to bereading this magazinepaper ( if you renot reading our PDF on the web)! Amarsh w eed, t he papyrus, scraped anddried while glued together, was devel-oped, which would take writing muchmore clearly than any other materialsuch as scraped animal hide, fromwhich the sheepskin given to collegegraduates is last reminder. Within ashort span of time, inks were devel-oped which would ensure fine defini-tions on this new writ ing material.

In time, those who could draw sym-bols on paper became a valuable re-source, and scribing was taught in thetemples of ancient Egypt. These firstforms of writing are as clear today asthey were when reed and ink firsttouched papyrus!

Shortly, the space problem rearedits head once more, and scholars found

that time. Did intelligent peoples ca-pable of conveying thought once covermuch more of the world than tradi-tional science believes? A star mapcarved on a stone was found 7,000 feetup on a mountain outside Flagstaff, Ari-zona by an archaeologist, Jeffrey

Goodman, hidden 16 feet under thesurface in his dig. Dated by an ar-chaeo-astronomer, the particular con-figuration of stellar bodies shown onthe stone dates to +/ - 100,000 years, many millennia before the famed landbridge crossings from Asia were postu-lated to have begun. And this is onlyone of many such enigmas found onthe North American continent.

Despite much contradictory evi-dence, documented by researcher Mi-chael Cremo and others, the orthodoxscientific view is that the transfer frompictures on stone to other materialsdates to approx imately 4,500 years ago.It was found that a sharpened stickmade readable symbols on a clay tablet, but because of the inability to erase asymbol once made, Babylonians whowere developing this new method ofcommunication later changed tobeeswax tablets, which could bescraped and corrected, or shaved andreused.

In Egypt, the tradition had alwaysbeen of hieroglyphs on stone. Hiero-glyphs were the first form of writingthat could be proven to include not

Perhaps the most intri-guing thing ever describedin Edgar Cayces psychicreadings was the Atlan-tean solar energy con-

Unli ke thebulk of psychic orchanneled informationwhich is generally short on de-tails, the information on the firestone was remarkably detailed andspecific with regard to both the oper-ating principles and the associatedcomponents. Terms were used whichhad no meaning then but which havedecided significance now.

As an archaeologist interested notonly in the technology itself, but alsoany linguistic clues, I began a search

over 10 years ago to see if there mightbe any linguistic connections withknow n cul tures. There w ereand onboth sides of the Atlantic among someof our most ancient cultures. I beganwith the logical assumption thattuaoi was literally interpreted byCayce as fire stone, The Mayan wordtook (pronounced like duke, butwith a t) means burn. Our wordnaptha is derived from the Sumerian

lens simply focuses light rays to apoint. The only device that actuallyamplifieslight is a laser, an acronymfor light amplification by the stimu-lated emission of radiation, initiallyevolved from the maser (the m is formicrow ave). Laser light differs from or-dinary light in that it is coherent, where all of the photons are of thesame w avelengt hso Cayces termcondensed the light is a good term

as the energy is condensed into asingle wavelength from the manypresent in ordinary white light. Assuch it can pack far more power in asmall space with all of the photonslined up rather than bouncing in dif-ferent directions.

If there is any doubt that this waswhat Cayce was referring to, we needonly look at a variation of this devicewhich he called (in 1933) the DeathRay, or the super cosmic ray, that willbe found in the next 25 years. In1958, 25 years later, Prof. Charles H.Townes and Art hur C. Schaw low pub-lished a paper entitled Infrared andOptical Masers which laid t he ground-work f or the development of t he laser. In 1959 the operating frequency ofmaser-type devices had been thrust upinto the optical region creating thelaser (Masers and Lasersby Arthur H.Klein, 1963).

    How did the firestone operate?

Bothhydrogen (found in stars) and krypton(found in the atmosphere) lase in theultraviolet, and krypton fluoride lasesin the extremeultraviolet. Oxygen willlase and it has been speculated thatozone, a more energetic form that ab-sorbs strongly in the ultraviolet, mightbe used in a gas laserwith caution, of

course. Another reading mentionscrystals into the pit s that made for theconnections with the internal influ-ences in the earth.

So w hat does this all have incommon? A thermally excited gaslaser with a quartz housing. Quartz al-lows for the transmission not only ofvisible wavelengths but also ultravioletand infrared radiations, unlike ordinaryglass. It is both piezoelectricand pyroe-lectric. The piezoelectric quality can beused for Q-switching, a phenomenonthat could possibly enhance theoutput.

Cayce states the force which camefrom the tuaoi arose in the form ofrays invisible to the eye, suggesting ul-traviolet or infrared as the operatingrange. An ultraviolet laser (technicallydesignated as a uvaser) ionizes the airdirectly in front of the beam creating

Cayce speaks of rays from the sun am-plified by crystals and the raising ofthe powers from the sun itself to a raythat makes for the disintegration of theatom. [The laser is sometimes referredto as the atomic li ght and atomic la-sers are a reality.] Ionization is the pro-cess whereby atoms gain or lose elec-trons, which if continued to completeionization would in fact result in itsdisintegration, leaving only positive

and negative charges in a plasma state.Reading 877-26 states: These were notonly rays from the sun, amplified bycrystals, but were combinations ofthese. Continuing: For it was thesegases, that were used for what we calltoday the conveniences. As for light, heat, the motivative forces: or radial ac-tivi ty, electrical combinations: the moti-vative forces of steam, gas, and the likefor conveniences. The gas laser is re-garded as the workhorse of lasers be-cause of its versatility and differs fromothers in that it can produce severalwavelengths.

The tuaoi crystal (it is repeatedlycalled a crystal, quartz being the firstdefinition in the dictionary under it)was said to get its power from theconcentration of energies that emanatefrom bodies that are on fi re themselves, along with elements that are found andnot found in the earths atmosphere.Helium was initially discovered in solar

he Ankhthe Egypt ian sym-bol of eternal life. Ever sinceI first saw one on a class tripto the San Francisco Museumof Natural History, it has fas-

cinated me. I suspected that there wasmore to it than a simple religioussymbol. The ankh has always been asso-ciated w ith eternal life and people con-nected with Egyptology generally con-sider or revere it as an extremelypowerful talisman, or symbol, withoutreally understanding it. This blind alle-giance shown to it by some always baf-fled me and seemed completely un-founded and unwarranted. I personally

always believed that the basic functionof the ankh, if indeed it ever had one,was lost t housands of years ago whenthe last of the pharaohs, priests finallydied. But, after personally being wit-ness to some rather fantastic experi-ments at the University of California atBerkeley with Egyptian mummies andhuge volumes of electricity (see letterswww.AtlantisRising.com, archives, back issues, story letter entitled theMummies Curse by Chuck Doire), I de-

Tcided not to dismiss closer study, and Itoo began my own research into themysterious ankh. The breakthrough forme came when I stumbled across acompilation of results from tests con-ducted in the late 50s and early 60s atFermi Labs, and other lesser nuclear fa-cilities. Apparently, these assorted la-boratories would take pure copperrings in many different sizes andemerge one end of the ring into a tankof liquid oxygen, or other super coldmedium. They would then introduce aconsiderable charge of electricity. Ap-parently, the electrical bolt was virtu-ally unable to pass through the ultra

frozen bottom half of the copper ring. The ring was then placed on a ceramictable and allowed to warm to roomtemperature and according to the testresults, the test copper ring wouldhave in it once it was thawed out abolt of electricity traveling round andround completely self-contained virtu-ally forever.

Apparently, the reasoning for theseexperiments was the need for a powersupply for space-based laser satellitesthat could remain at full power for dec-

ades if necessary. It was the goal of thegovernment to have a defensive net ofkiller satellites circling the earth. Eachsatellite would be equipped with adozen electro rings all chargedthrough tremendous capacity neverlosing potency in the vacuum of space. The computer controlling the laser sat-ellites had only to access one of thepower rings for a huge momentaryburst of energy when needed for at-tacking enemy targets.

The report ends by mentioning theextreme weight factor of launching amilitary satellite with twelve rather

large solid copper rings and the unde-niable fact that the Soviet Union nolonger possesses a serious enoughthreat to warrant such expenditures.

Eventually, I realized the connec-tion between the ankh and the convo-luted report I had read. The Egyptianstalk of life never ending, continuingfor eternity. The report also talks ofelectricity going around forever, end-lessly. I started at an original ankh thatI had purchased in Cairo years ago. No-body is going to believe this, I said tomyself as I picked up my pen andbegan to w rite.

The human body carries all i nforma-tion from t he brain to the various partswith electricity. The neuron nets ofthe mind with its synapses firing makeall things possible. All experiencesboth good and bad in a persons lifeare processed and remembered hope-fully never to be forgotten. So, at cer-tain times in Egyptian societys pastthe wearing of the ankh had becomefairly widespread. I believe that atsome point, Egyptian royalty, or pos-sibly their priests, became aware ofthe incredible fact that a gold ankh

Co ntinue d from Pa ge 2 7worn around the neck would act as anaccumulator of that persons lifepulses, or brain waves, and as thatparticular person traveled the road oflife his or her ankh w ould somehow ab-sorb the minuscule discarded brain

waves and ocular vision images pro-cessed by t he mind. The information would collect at

the three-stems, or antenna of theankh and thereon circle endlessly, eter-nally in the circular loopof the ankh. As the elec-trical memories, orthoughts, would arrivethey would stack, oralign themselves inorder, so the persons lifeexperiences would re-main in logical order, orprogression. This wouldoccur possibly because I

believe as the person ageshis or her brain w ouldcontinually be degrading, growing older so everythought collected by theankh w ould be slightlycorrupted from the previous thought. So, like an endless train each thoughtor experience would simply hook upwhere the last left off in line and ontrack. Whether they knew what theywere doing or not, the fact was by thetime of their death they had accumu-lated and stored what amounts basi-cally to their entire life convenientlystored in their ankh memory storage

hoop. It seems quite likely that as theEgyptian, whether priest or king, laydying, his ankh was still around hisneck even at this late hour. It was stillabsorbing, still accumulating the dyingmans life. When he finally breathed hislast as his heart stopped beating, hisbrain naturally stopped generating elec-tricity. I believe at t
