Well, we made it. Summer is fi nally here, and it’s a great time to enjoy all the hard work you have put into your home in preparation for these lazy days. However, there is always room for improvement, right? Sometimes small changes can make a big difference and increase the enjoyment of your living space too. Such is the case with many of the topics in this issue of Atlanta Home Improvement.

Windows and doors perplex many homeowners, and now with all the eco-friendly options available, it’s hard to know what to do. Starting on page 21, we address what to do when faced with the decision to repair or replace your windows and doors, debunking common myths in the process. We also discuss some of the exciting energy-effi cient options on the market that can help save money and take some of the burden off your air-conditioner.

Many kitchens are fi lled with white, black and stainless steel along with a host of other neutral colors. Myth #1:Replacing my windows or doors won’t really save that much

energy.

The Truth:“Replacing old windows with high-performing, energy-

effi cient ones can save signifi cant amounts of energy,” says

Jeffrey F. Lowinski, vice president of technical services for

the Window & Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA). In

fact, he notes that reports published by the U.S. Department

of Energy and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in

2006 reveal that almost half of the homes in the U.S. still

have single-pane windows; if all of those homes upgrade to

Energy Star-certifi ed windows, the energy savings would be

approximately 20 million BTUs per house per year.

What does that mean for your home

in particular? According to Nils

Petermann, program manager for

the Effi cient Windows Collaborative,

“Changing from drafty single-pane

windows to Energy Star windows

will save a lot of heating energy in

a climate where winters are cold.

Where summers are hot, Energy Star

windows will also save signifi cant

electricity by keeping the house

cooler through invisible low-E

coatings on the glass.”

“When you reduce your heating

and cooling needs, it will, in turn,

reduce the time that your heating

and cooling units run, and since most

units run on a set temperature and

when your home drops below or goes

above the temperature that you have

preset on your thermostat, it tells

your heating or cooling system that

it is time to run,” says Christopher

Wood of WeatherTite Windows.

“When you reduce the amount of

energy loss in your home, you reduce

the amount of times the temperature

drops below your preset comfort level

in your home.”

Myth #2: Changing my windows and doors will

cost more money than it will save.

The Truth:Yes, replacing your home’s windows and doors is an

investment. However, it’s unquestionably a worthwhile

one in the long run. “The investment in new windows and

doors is just that, an investment,” Stacy Einck of Andersen

Windows and Doors tells us. “Recovery of that investment

in home value and energy savings is dependent on how

long you stay in your home after replacing the windows and

doors and how energy effi cient the home itself is.”

“Energy-effi cient windows and doors can reduce monthly

heating and cooling bills by 15-20 percent, according to

the U.S. Department of Energy,” explains Berit Griffi n from

Marvin Windows and Doors.

Of course, it’s important to realize that savings may

not be seen immediately—it can take some time to

recoup the money that you’ve spent. “Windows don’t

typically have as quick a payback as energy-effi cient lights

or cheaper air-sealing measures have,” Petermann explains.

“However, windows can be around for decades, so durable,

energy-effi cient windows are a very valuable investment.”

Peter Diehl of AVI, a Marvin Design Gallery, tells us that there

are a few things to consider when deciding on the products

and the quality if we are deciding to change out windows

and doors. For example, pay attention to U-values, SHGC, the

thermal expansion and contraction rates of the materials

used in frame and sash and the Design Pressure rating of

the window (The higher the rating, the less the air and water

infi ltration will be.) “If done right, you will see an immediate

return on your investment,” he says.

To help calculate the amount of time it will take to recoup

your investment, Lowinski says that most energy payback

calculations estimate a payback period of about 7 years. “If

the energy improvement can save enough money to pay back

the purchase and installation costs in 7 years or less, then the

improvement is generally considered cost-effective,” he adds.

Myth #3:It’s better to repair windows and doors than to replace them.

Repairs are less expensive and can make the windows and

doors energy-effi cient.

The Truth:Unless the repair is quick and easy, replacing your

windows and doors is a better option. When replacing,

you get to choose from incredible new designs, as well as

environmentally friendly and energy-effi cient choices.

“It’s almost impossible to repair a window or door in a way

that signifi cantly improves its energy effi ciency,” Lowinski

says. “Modern, high-performing, energy-effi cient windows

combine insulating glass, inert gas fi lls, low-emissivity

coatings, high-performance framing materials, tight

weatherstripping and other features to achieve their rated

performance. These manufacturing improvements would be

nearly impossible to incorporate into an existing window.”

However, if you feel that replacing all of your windows is not

possible right now, there are maintenance initiatives you can

use to ensure that what you have is performing at its peak.

“Old windows can be made from durable materials and may

offer aesthetic value,” Petermann contends. “If you prefer

repairing and retaining your old windows, do make sure that

there’s no water damage around the window frame, that you

don’t retain hazardous lead paint and that you are limiting

energy losses with weatherstripping by sealing air leaks and

by using upgrade measures such as inserting insulated glass

or adding storm windows or shading.”

“Certainly, repairing windows will be the lowest cost

solution. Repairs to existing windows can be troublesome,

as locating original hardware can be diffi cult,” Troy Welch of

Silver Line Windows tells us. He goes

on to add that if you choose to just

repair your windows, remember that

older windows will not give you the

benefi t of newer glazing technology

that uses low-E coated glass to

maximize energy effi ciency.

“Just repairing a window is usually a

temporary solution. It’s kind of like

the cartoons when you see them

putting chewed gum over a leak in

a raft. It’s only going to work for so

long,” Wood adds. “Most likely, the

problem will happen again, and parts

can sometimes be very diffi cult to

come by if not non-existent.”

Myth #4:My home is only 10 years-old—I don’t

need to think about replacing my

windows and doors now.

The Truth:While energy effi ciency has become

more common in recent years, that

doesn’t mean your current windows

and doors are as effective as they

could—or should—be. Therefore, it’s

a good idea to consider your options.

“Ideally, you don’t need to change your windows after just

10 years,” Petermann says. “However, be aware that 10 years

ago, many conventional windows were still being installed

that would not meet today’s energy codes. Particularly in

the southern states, windows with solar-control, low-E

glass were not as common 10 years ago, and today’s Energy

Star windows can keep homes signifi cantly cooler through

advanced low-E coatings.”

“Energy Star is an excellent way to ensure that the windows

being purchased will meet the local thermal requirements,”

Welch says.

So how do you know what today’s energy codes are? Diehl

tells us to go to www.southface.org to fi nd out.

Lowinski also points to the signifi cant improvements made

in window and door manufacturing. “The products that exist

today are signifi cantly better than the products that existed

10 years ago. So even if your home has the most energy-

effi cient product available when it was constructed, you

could still see signifi cant—and cost-effective—improvements

by replacing your windows with more effi cient products that

are on the market today,” he says.

Myth #5:If I replace with wood windows, they can rot. And steel or

aluminum windows can rust. There aren’t any good options

out there that are as durable as they are energy-effi cient.

The Truth:The worst-case scenario for any product is its deterioration,

but no matter what material it is made of, windows and

doors are manufactured to withstand wear and tear.

“Wood products are treated with proven water-repellant

preservatives during their assembly,” Lowinski says. “Vinyl

products use formulations and stabilizers that preserve their

fl exibility and strength. Aluminum products use anodized

or paint coatings to protect the metal from

corrosion. But, as with everything, windows

must be maintained in order to preserve

their durability and should be properly

protected according to the manufacturer’s

instructions.”

“Today’s high-quality products are

engineered to last a lifetime,” Tim Rush

of Davis Window and Door says. “The

best products will have a manufacturer’s

warranty that refl ects their superior quality.”

Myth #6:Steel and fi berglass doors might be energy-

effi cient, but they will not be able to hold up

against extreme weather conditions.

The Truth:Today’s door replacement options are as sturdy and reliable

as they are energy-effi cient and attractive. You just have

to do a little shopping around to fi nd the right fi t for your

region’s climate and your home’s individual needs. For

instance, Griffi n notes that products like Integrity from

a good understanding of what you need, you can fi nd the

right fi t among today’s many products.

As for shopping for products made of materials that are

suitable for the climate here in Atlanta, Welch, Wood and

Rush all agree that vinyl is the way to go, but Rush agrees

with Diehl on also choosing fi berglass. “These materials

require little or no maintenance and are engineered for a

lifetime of performance,” Rush says.

Myth #7:Technology is changing so quickly that today’s energy-

effi cient windows and doors will be obsolete very soon, so

there’s no point in replacing them now.

The Truth:While technology is evolving on a daily basis, this is no

reason to refrain from replacing your windows and doors

and enjoying the benefi ts today. “Technology does change

rapidly, and improvements are continually being made to the

design and materials used in window [and door] assembly,”

Lowinski says. “But you wouldn’t not buy the latest smart

phone, waiting for the next new product to come along,

would you? The longer you wait to replace your windows

[and doors], the more energy you will waste…waiting.”

When it comes to window and door energy-effi ciency, timing

really is everything—and the time to consider upgrading is

now. As Griffi n states, “Windows and doors are an important

part of your home’s energy-effi ciency. And modern windows

and doors feature high-quality construction to make sure

that your home is as energy-effi cient as possible.”

How Will I Know?If you have an older home, you

need to be able to recognize the

signs that indicate it’s time to

consider replacing your windows.

Here are some tips:

• Look for cold or warm spots

near the inside of your

windows—This means that the

window is not insulating the

house adequately.

• Check for frost and ice buildup

on the exterior of the house

near doors and windows.

• Be on the lookout for drafts.

Run a lighted candle around a

window’s edge—If it fl ickers,

then drafts are coming in

through that window.

• Make sure your windows

operate smoothly. It shouldn’t

take effort to open and close

them.

• Realize that if you fi nd yourself

propping your windows open

with a stick, it’s time to replace

them.

Can window blinds help

with energy-effi ciency if I

can’t afford to replace my

windows right now?

Window blinds can help

you reduce cooling costs by

refl ecting sunlight and solar

heat. During seasons when you prefer

solar heat to help warm up your home,

though, make sure that you open

the blinds during the day. Blinds that

refl ect more sunlight than they absorb

(typically light-colored) are more

effective at keeping away the heat.

Some heat will get trapped between

the blinds and windows, though, so

exterior sun screens, awnings or roller

shades are an even more-effective

means of keeping out the solar heat.

Window Tinting

What exactly is home

window-tinting, and how

can it benefi t me?

Window-tinting involves

applying a fi lm to the

interior surface of existing windows,

which creates a barrier that refl ects

radiant heat and fi lters ultraviolet

rays. It can provide some benefi t

over single-pane glass but is not

recommended over insulated glass.

Most manufacturers’ glass warranties

are voided if tint-fi lm is installed on

their windows.

Choosing Your Pro

With so many people and

companies out there, how

do I decide who to hire to

install my new windows and doors?

Get at least three quotes.

The second-most-important

part of any window or

door purchase is the installation. What

install warranty do they have? Be sure to

look for a 5- to 10-year install warranty.

Installation issues account for 90 percent

of problems with windows and doors,

and most manufacturers’ warranties

will not cover problems caused by poor

installation.

Sidelights

I have sidelights next to

my front door. What kinds

of window treatments

or options can I consider to make

these smaller windows more energy-

effi cient?

Sidelights are diffi cult

because many treatments

cannot be manufactured with working

parts in less than 12-inch widths. Due

to these constraints, the best treatment

for sidelights is shutters. Their louvers

provide great light control as well as

privacy and can be manufactured in small

widths to accommodate sidelights. They

also appear to be an integral part of the

window trim once installed. Another

popular choice is cordless honeycomb

shades. These shades have high effi ciency

ratings and operate without cords, so they

can be manufactured in small widths.

What do I need to look

for to make sure that I’ve

chosen energy-effi cient

window treatments?

For energy effi ciency in

colder months, look for high

R-values, which measure a

product’s ability to insulate. In warmer

months, look for low solar-heat-gain

co-effi cients, which measure a product’s

ability to resist heat. In addition to

boasting high R-values, a product like

means that only 15 percent of the solar

Whether you follow color trends or not, it’s hard to ignore the design industry’s fi xation

on the topic. Just before the beginning of each year, forecasters reveal their picks for

the colors they believe will be popular based on current economic conditions and

prevailing moods.

For 2011, the Pantone Color Institute picked “Honeysuckle,” a bright, red-based pink, as its “color of the year”

for its ability to uplift and energize; a symbol of optimism for trying times. “We are just kind of hungry for

pretty, promising and optimistic,” says Atlanta-based interior designer and color expert Rebecca Ewing.

Like a breath of fresh air, the appearance of brightly colored tabletop goods and home accessories signals

that summer has arrived. In the same way, colorful appliances give life to neutral-colored kitchens. With

shades such as magenta, lime green, yellow, turquoise, orange and violet in addition to red, which has

become a staple in most collections, colorful appliances can illuminate any aesthetic.

Design Ideas

Small Kitchen Appliances

Small kitchen appliances in fun colors are practically guiltless. They are

a great way to express your personal style and make food preparation

more exciting without breaking the bank. Choose a collection of small

appliances in the same hue such as the Cuisinart collection for Sur

La Table to create a unifi ed look. “The key is to repeat the color,” says

Ewing. “That’s how you unify the space.”

The Cuisinart for Sur La Table collection includes food processors,

immersion blenders, 7-speed hand mixers, ice-cream makers and

juicers in Plum, Pomegranate, Parsley, Tangerine, Berry Blue, Lemon

and Crush. “We chose to partner with Cuisinart on this line because

they make great electrics under $100,” says Susanna Linse, Sur La Table

media relations manager. “The colors you see in the Cuisinart line

are part of our color-theme this year. You’ll see them in a variety of

product categories. The bright colors are fresh, fun and bold—perfect

for cheering up a kitchen countertop.”

Another small kitchen appliance that has gained a reputation for its

rainbow of colors is the KitchenAid stand mixer, which debuted in 1919

and is available in more than 40 fi nishes. One of the newest shades

introduced this year is Raspberry Ice, a deep pinkish-purple. Whirlpool

Corp., the parent company of KitchenAid, reports that color has been

infl uential in the stand mixer’s success. “However you look at [the

KitchenAid stand mixer]—a design icon, a family heirloom or a cool

product—it offers a pure and timeless shape and the perfect surface to

drape with color,” states the Whirlpool Corp. website.

Major Kitchen Appliances

To make a bigger statement, invest in major appliances such as

refrigerators, range ovens and dishwashers in eye-popping colors.

Viking not only pioneered the manufacturing of professional-grade

residential range ovens in the eighties, but also distinguishes itself from

other manufacturers with 24 color options, including pumpkin, cobalt

blue, plum and racing red, according to Andy Sewell, president of Sewell

Appliance Sales and Service Company in Sandy Springs.

For a slightly different set of color choices for major kitchen appliances,

BlueStar also offers large professional-grade appliances in several

bright colors not currently available from Viking such as Blue Lilac,

Light Pink, Yellow Green and Maize Yellow. The “Build Your BlueStar”

online tool allows users to customize not only the confi guration of

the appliance, but also the body color and knob color from among 23

fi nishes.

In the same way that KitchenAid updates its classic stand mixer with

trendy colors, manufacturers of modern retro-style kitchen appliances

such as Northstar by Elmira Stove Works and Big Chill also use bright

How We LiveThe bright-appliances trend underscores several developments that have

emerged recently in home remodeling. The fi rst is the evolution of the

kitchen as a living space rather than just a workspace, and, therefore, a

showcase of personal style.

“At any party or event, people end up in the kitchen,” Sewell says. “It’s

really a living room. That’s why people want the kitchen to be designed

to be useful and nice… It sets the tone for their lifestyle.” Plus, color

can help extend a warm welcome and stimulate conversation, which

is a bonus for homeowners who like to entertain. “Color is much more

inviting than non-color,” says Ewing.

The second way new residential design trends have created a demand

for kitchen appliances in a variety of colors is the addition of “mini-

kitchens” to non-traditional spaces in the home. Think guest-room

coffee stations and basement wet bars. Homeowners are placing kitchen

appliances that suit their lifestyles in places where they need them

the most. Mini-kitchens provide even more areas to make a colorful

statement.

Mix It UpWhile there is certainly an argument to be made for timeless design,

accent colors offer a break from the routine between remodels. Some

designers now are focusing on “planned obsolescence,” says color

expert Rebecca Ewing, or choosing colors or designs that only last for a

few years. In a world where the “in” color changes at least yearly if not

seasonally, you can see why. “It used to be a palette lasted 10 years,”

Ewing says. “but by the eighties we had three palettes. The expectation is

that people are going to want to update every three to fi ve years.”

Ewing adds that there are ways to update without a major redo,

including changing accent colors and switching out hardware. “Pack up

half of your accessories and rotate every six months,” suggests Ewing.

“This keeps us from growing tired of them and gives them longevity.

I think we want change. When our lives change, our attitudes change.

When we grow, we need some new symbols around us.”

While color and design trends may come and go quicker than you can

blink an eye, trust your own style barometer when contemplating a

change.

ith school out for the summer, many parents are

looking for ways to keep their kids entertained at

home. There are only so many things to do inside,

most of which are sedentary, and sending the kids

outside provides a much-needed break. And as

childhood obesity has become a national health issue, keeping

kids active is now more important than ever. Backyard play sets

give kids a natural way to stay healthy and active and parents

peace-of-mind about safety concerns.

“While the play set itself may or may not directly affect a child’s

ability to maintain an ideal weight, it helps develop good habits

of staying active and appreciating what the outdoors has to

offer and is an alternative to the Xbox,” says Brian Pound of

Dreamtime Designs.

Al Adkisson of Superior Play Systems agrees, adding that,

“Putting fun items on the play sets like rock walls and rope

ladders makes the kids exercise, but in a fun way. It’s a great

way to get the kids away from the television and outside

exercising.”

Be sure to include a variety of features and activities to create a play set designed for years of fun. Providing variety is also a way to establish priorities when determining your budget.

Bark Up the Right TreeKids dream of escaping the confi nes of their parents’ house and into a fantasy

world of their own with no crown molding or hardwood fl oors they can’t drag chairs

across. They want to explore and use their imagination, and a tree house could be

just the antidote.

“There are no standard models with a tree house because each one is designed

with customer input to fi t their budget goals and space,” Pound says. Other factors

affecting the construction of a tree house are the slope of the area, the tree that it

is going to be built around—specifi cally its size, type and growth rate—and, most

importantly, as Pound says, “the imagination of the child whose outdoor kingdom it

will become.”

Pound is also fi nding that more and more customers want play structures to blend

with their backyard environments. “One customer’s set overlooked his tropical-pool

environment, so we surfaced his play set with hand-cut, locally grown bamboo

complete with a thatch roof,” he says. Pound has also used native-tree limbs for

the slats of tree house railings in order to make the structure blend in with its

surroundings.

Have Fun. Stay Safe.Cliché but time-tested and nonetheless true is the saying, “You live, and you learn.”

But as a parent wanting to give your child everything they ever wanted while

dealing with your own concerns about safety, you can protect them by selecting the

best-quality safety features for your outdoor play structure.

“The most important aspect of safety on a playground has less to do with features

than it does with the heaviness of the structure,” Pound says. “Most kits or

suspiciously inexpensive play sets use thinner, lighter weight boards with

Making sure your backyard play set will stay secure and

intact is fi rst and foremost, but you also want to think about

more than just the nuts and bolts.

“We only use redwood, which is free of chemicals and is ideal for

outdoor play sets,” Adkisson says. “It’s naturally immune to insects,

decay and deterioration. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

(CPSC) recommends natural wood like redwood for outdoor play sets as opposed

to treated wood.” Superior Play Systems also uses safe, non-slip fl at-steel safety

rungs, which provide more surface area and make it easy for small hands to grip,

while a non-skid coating helps prevent slips when the structure gets wet.

In the event that a fall or slip does occur, safety surfacing can provide an

additional layer of protection. “Having a resilient safety surface under your play

structure is extremely important. Getting a serious injury from falling is no fun,”

says Andy Erler of Spread Tech.

“There are two main types of safety surfacing: loose fi ll and unitary,” Erler

says. “Loose-fi ll surfacing includes wood playground mulch, also known as

Engineered Wood Fiber, and rubber playground mulch. Make sure that you

use mulch that is designed for playground use and not just for landscape use.

Unitary surfacing includes Bonded Rubber, Poured in Place Rubber and Synthetic

Turf over a foam pad. Unitary surfacing costs more up front, but requires very

little maintenance.”

America has ‘right-sized.’ Following decades of growth in the average home size, the trend ended rather abruptly in 2007 due to “a severe housing recession, concern over rising home energy costs and changing lifestyles,” according to a study by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Downsizing is expected to continue as homeowners adjust to a new “normal.” Here are some strategies for making the most of what you have:

Smart Space-Planning“Homeowners are still investing, but they are spending to responsibly enhance their lifestyles,” says Buckhead architect Jeffrey Baker, AIA. “I have had four clients in 2011 reclaim wasted space by remodeling their basements.” An

ongoing trend among remodelers is to rip out an existing bathtub and replace it will a glass shower enclosure. This frees up room and helps make a small space appear and feel larger. Out with cookie-cutter, in with customization.

Upgraded InteriorsHomes are becoming more like luxury hotel suites: effi ciently laid out, well-appointed and fi lled with amenities. Homeowners “want to come home to a space as clean and refreshing as the resort where they spent their favorite vacation,” says Buckhead interior designer and antiques dealer Summer Loftin. “I provide value and inspiration for my clients by endowing their spaces with gracious appointments such as wide-plank fl oors.”

Move over, white-picket fence. Today’s homeowners are thinking outside the box. That’s because in addition to enhancing security and privacy, fences play a big part in creating curb appeal and enjoyable outdoor living spaces.

The latest trends in fences are eco-friendly and alternative materials and unique designs. When selecting a fence to fi t your needs, consider these non-traditional options:

“Living Fences” Homeowners who want to defi ne property boundaries or create a natural privacy screen are opting to plant fast-growing trees, shrubs or bamboo in lieu of installing wood or metal fences. These “living fences” can even disguise old, worn fences, sheds or children’s play equipment. An added bonus: Living fences support the national Green Building Initiative and benefi t the environment.

Reclaimed and Recycled Materials Using reclaimed and recycled materials is yet another way to stay on-trend with green building. Reclaimed barn wood or siding can be used for fence railings. Scour the local fl ea market for old, decorative fi nds to use as a garden gate. Recycled plastic is used in many composite-fencing products. Ask your local building supply store for more information on eco-friendly materials.

Artistic Expression Accent a traditional white-picket fence with a gate painted in a bold color such as apple-green or cherry-red. Top fence posts with decorative post caps, fi nials or tiny birdhouses. Adding interesting curves, cut-outs and details to fence pickets is easy and inexpensive. Mix materials—Pairing an iron gate with a wood fence is a good combination. Refl ect your personal style.

Faux Finishes Is it wood, or is it composite? Iron or PVC? Stone or engineered granite? The alternative fence materials on the market are pleasantly deceiving. Often, they are less expensive, more durable and better for the environment than traditional materials. And the look couldn’t be better.

With the arrival of summer, the landscape is at its peak in June. Annual and perennial fl owers are blooming beautifully, butterfl ies and bees are pollinating fruits and vegetables, lawns are lush and green. Grab a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent, and enjoy this fi rst month of summer in the garden!

Garden Maintenance

➤ June is the best time to seed, sprig or sod warm-season grasses such as

Bermuda, Centipede and Zoysia. Remember that newly planted lawns MUST be

watered, but make sure to observe local watering restrictions.

➤ Fertilize only warm-season grasses this month. Fescue should not be fertilized

again until cooler weather in the fall.

➤ Did your lawn suddenly turn yellow or die out in patches? You might have

an insect or disease problem. Contact your local extension agent to aid in

identifying and remedying the problem.

➤ Numerous weeds in the lawn indicate poor growing conditions for turf;

improve the condition by changing your maintenance practices: Leave

grass clippings on the lawn to decompose and provide nutrients; mow at

recommended heights for your particular turf grass; and mow often.

➤ Mulch all of your fl owers, shrubs and trees. This will help deter weed

growth, keep the roots cooler, conserve water in the soil and provide a more

attractive look to your landscape. Aged wood chips or bark, pine straw,

recycled-rubber mulch and shredded leaves are all excellent mulches. Make

sure that any shredded mulch delivered by local tree-trimmers is allowed to

age (a minimum of one month) before spreading around plantings

➤ All spring-fl owering shrubs and trees can be pruned soon after blooming

and before new growth starts. Pruning after June 30 might reduce the

amount of fl owering next spring, so get out the tools now!

➤ Japanese beetle season is here! The best method of removal is hand-picking

the beetles off of your roses, shrubs and ornamentals and dropping in

a bucket of soapy water. Encourage your neighbors to start a treatment

program in the fall, treating your lawns for the grubs that develop into

Japanese beetles.

➤ Are your patio containers fi lled with colorful fl owers and foliage?

Remember, container gardens need much more water than bedding plants.

Water daily (Use “gray water” such as condensation collected from your air

conditioner or bathtub.), and be sure to fertilize these plants frequently to

encourage blooms.

➤ Rapidly growing chrysanthemums should be pinched back to about 3

inches in June, then again later in the summer. If you do this, you won’t be

disappointed this fall. You’ll have a spectacular display of color and bloom!

➤ You’ll get more blooms for a longer period of time if you deadhead (remove

old fl ower heads) annuals such as petunias, marigolds, salvia, zinnias and

geraniums. Pinching will also provide you with bushier plants. Coleus, for

example, should be pinched regularly as fl owers form.

➤ Suffer from blossom-end rot on tomatoes, peppers, watermelon and squash?

Avoid this problem by proper mulching and watering correctly. Don’t let soil

dry out between waterings, and avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer.

➤ Harvest your vegetables regularly as this will encourage further production.

Leaving them on the plant or vine too long can alter the taste and texture of

edible plants. Pick early in the morning and later afternoon for best results.

What to Plant

➤ Many summer bulbs and tubers can be found at area nurseries. Now that the

ground is warm enough, plant caladiums, dahlias, cannas and blackberry

lilies for beautiful color in your garden.

➤ For basil and parsley all summer long, plant seeds every two weeks. You’ll

have a constant supply of fresh herbs for the kitchen until frost.

“Crash!” “Bam!” “Kapowie!” So go the speech-

balloon sound effects in comics. Likewise, or worse, is the

sound of that once-neighborly tree that has now decided

to visit the interior of your home. If nothing worse,

inconvenience and major repair are a part of the future.

Not infrequently, injury and tragedy are the result.

Unavoidable accident? Maybe not! As strong as they

seem, huge trees can be easily compromised if improper

construction methods impact the critical root zone.

Severed roots, fl ooding and soil compaction within a

certain radius can have a disastrous effect on the health

of mature trees. Besides degrading the landscape dollar-

value of your trees, putting that big old oak to ruin will

put your domicile in danger too.

How close can you go with impunity? The critical root

zone is often designated as the space within the drip line

of the tree, which is formed by the circumference of the

farthest branches. The good folks at the extension service

of the University of Minnesota, however, suggest using

the timber’s chest-high trunk diameter as the base fi gure.

Measure the diameter of the trunk at chest height—four

feet or so off the ground—; then multiply that fi gure, in

inches, by 1.5 to get the critical-root radius, in FEET.

Thoughtless trenching, grading, compaction and water

entrapment within that danger zone can have durability

consequences for the tree. A stately magnolia in the

West End went from summer green to “dead as a wedge”

in a matter of weeks—all because of wet feet. All those

pretty tree-lined streets become mine fields when

sidewalk construction or driveway expansion severs vital

roots and then compounds the issue with impenetrable

concrete, blocking air and moisture to the root system.

Look at the news coverage on typical tree-eats-house

stories: See how the failed tree has often been cropped

in by too-close construction (private or public) or has

been subjected to severed roots by overly aggressive

landscaping methods.

Not all trees respond to these insults equally. Beech,

butternut, some oaks and walnut are particularly sensitive

to root damage. Fir, pine, beech, sugar maple and oak take a

hit from soil compaction. Fir, on the other hand, is tolerant

of root damage along with white cedar, pine, spruce, ash,

birch, maple, elm and willow. Excepting pine and elm, the

same list is tolerant of soil compaction as well.

The Minnesota study rates pine, cottonwood, basswood

and silver maple as having high risk for causing damage;

noting, of course, that the damage is dependent on tree/

house proximity. Who would have guessed?

Some oaks fall into the moderate-danger rating, and cedar,

river birch, cherry, ash and white oak have a low damage

potential. Factoring in landscape value, the fi rst team for

value and safety includes cedar, spruce, fi r, river birch, ash

and white oak.

you.

ith school out for the summer, many parents are

looking for ways to keep their kids entertained at

home. There are only so many things to do inside,

most of which are sedentary, and sending the kids

outside provides a much-needed break. And as

childhood obesity has become a national health issue, keeping

kids active is now more important than ever. Backyard play sets

give kids a natural way to stay healthy and active and parents

peace-of-mind about safety concerns.

“While the play set itself may or may not directly affect a child’s

ability to maintain an ideal weight, it helps develop good habits

of staying active and appreciating what the outdoors has to

offer and is an alternative to the Xbox,” Pound says.

Adkisson agrees, adding that, “Putting fun items on the play

sets like rock walls and rope ladders makes the kids exercise,

but in a fun way. It’s a great way to get the kids away from the

television and outside exercising.”

This 20-year-old kitchen was small and narrow with outdated appliances and limited possibility for movement and fl ow. The client wanted an updated, open and airy space to accommodate the entire seven-member family, and that’s just what they got from Atlanta Design & Build. The new setup includes a keeping room, enlarged kitchen, walk-in pantry and offi ce space that better suits the family’s lifestyle. The kitchen remodel also features fi nely crafted details such as decorative columns, ornate brackets and moldings and wrought-iron light fi xtures that give the space character while still remaining kid-friendly. Underscoring the entire project are the intense structural adjustments that had to be made to expand the kitchen, including wall and brick-fl oor removal, installation of supports for vaulted ceiling and upstairs fl oors and relocation of electrical and plumbing systems.
