2. What is a Fad Diet?A fad diet is a diet, weight loss plan or aidthat make dieters believe that they willachieve dramatic results over a short periodof time. These diets are usually based onpopularity and word of mouth rather thanscientific information. Because of this, faddiets are restrictive and hard tomaintain, therefore not allowing dieters tostick to the diets for long periods of times. This leads to temporary weight-loss and theinability to achieve long term results. 3. How does it deviate from healthy eating? Fad diets are eating programs that generallydeviate from healthy eating due to thembeing unbalanced, unhealthy and notnutritionally sound. For example, diet pillsrely on speeding up heart rates in order toburn fat quicker. The cabbage soup dietrelies on you eating primarily one type offood, which will cause nutritionaldeficiencies. The grapefruit diet will damageyour metabolism and the three day dietrestricts the number of vitamins andminerals consumed. From these exampleswe can see that fad diets can actually bedangerous to your health. 4. Explanation of the AtkinsDiet?ATKINS NUTRITIONAL APPROACH:The Atkins diet is essentially a low-carbohydrate diet. It aims to switch the bodys metabolism frommetabolising glucose as energy over to converting stored body fat to energy. Dr Atkins believedthat the low-carbohydrate diet produces a metabolic advantage because "burning fat takes morecalories so you expend more calories." The diet consists of four stages: induction, ongoing weightloss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance. In the Induction stage you are limited to 20 netgrams of carbohydrates per day, this will increase in the ongoing weight stage as you are able toincrease the limit by 5 grams each week. In the pre-maintenance stage you are able to increasecarbohydrates intake by 10 grams a week and in the lifetime maintenance stage you is intended tocarry on the habits acquired in the previous phases. 5. Explanation of the Atkins Diet? cont ATKINS NUTRITIONAL APPROACH:Foods you are allowed to consume on the Atkins diet includes fish (eg.tuna, salmon and trout), fowl (eg. chicken, turkey and duck), meat ( eg beef, porkand lamb) and eggs. this diets popularity and large following was blamed forsteep declines in high carbohydrate food sales including pasta and rice. the dietwas also blamed for a decline in Krispy Kreme sales and the introduction ofspecialised product lines that were low in carbohydrates including Coco-Cola C2and Pepsi Edge. 6. How does it suggest that you will loseweight? How your body handles fat can be influenced by eating theright foods and increasing up bodys metabolism. When youeat fewer carb foods (especially vegetables high in fibre)your body switches to burning fat (including your own bodyfat) instead of carbs as its primary fuel source. By changingthe balance of carbs, fats and protein in your diet, you boostyour energy level and keep it on an even keel.Fat calories are always pushed to the back of the linewhere more than likely theyre stored. Thats why insulin iscalled the fat hormone. As long as your body keepsturning glucose into fat, youre doomed to being heavy.Fortunately, it doesnt have to be that way. Thats whycutting your carb intake and eating mostly whole foodcarbohydrates is the core premise of the Atkins Diet. 7.
