Your weekly paper with news, views & interviews. since 90/91. season 23.

On behalf of the Kommun and the local people in Arjeplog,

we welcome you all to a new winter testing season.

We hope your work will be successful and your visit enjoyable.

Eyes of Reindeer Change Colour to Cope with Winter Darkness

Here you can see the difference in colour in winter eyes (blue-ish) and summer eyes (yellow-gold) of reindeer.

A newly published scientific study reported that reindeer have yellowish-gold eyes during the summer in their habitat. However, during the cold and very dark winter season, their eyes turn a noticeable hue of blue.

The reason for the colour shift is because of changes in a light-reflecting tissue layer behind the retina. This structure gives the eye’s light-sensitive neurons a second chance to detect scarce photons in low-light conditions. In other words, it makes the eyes extremely sensitive to light.

This is the first time a colour change of this kind in the eye has been shown in mammals, according to scientists.

To study the phenomenon, the research team looked at disembodied reindeer eyeballs from reindeer anywhere from 1.5 to 3 years old. By weighing down the eyes, researchers recreated what happens to reindeer in the winter; because of the darkness, their eyes stay dilated, and this builds up pressure, making them up to 1,000 times more sensitive to light.

Not only does it allow the animals to adjust better to the different light extremes of the seasons, but it “gives them an advantage when it comes to spotting predators,” lead researcher Glen Jeffery, of the University College London said, “which could save their lives.”

We spoke to a number of local Saami people and they say this is news to them, but they all agree that the reindeer is a most amazing creature in many aspects.

One example is that their fur is able to keep the animals comfortable in a wide range of temperatures, from about plus 30°C to minus 40°C.

This & That...• Many new things this season which we will write about in the coming issues of The Arjeplog Times. The first issue in the new year will come out on Friday, January 10th, 2014.

• Arjeplogs Vilt/Viltbutik is the new owner of the former Nelly’s Cafe! Nellys Café on the market square went bankcrupt at the end of last year’s season and now Jonny and Helena from Viltbutiken have bought it. They are planning to have their shop there, as well as a small café & lunch place.

• For the seventh year the village of Jutis or Moose village have published a calendar with semi-naked people. Some of the revenue is donated to cancer research. We have donated more than 150,000 SEK, says Madelaine Ahainen Westerlund, Jutis.

Arjeplog - Kommun of the Year 2013This award for the “Kommun of the year 2013” is in recogni-tion of the work done in the small villages of the kommun. In Arjeplog we also have the fastest growing companies in the north and to top it off, the municipality has been voted as one of the best places to live, especially for senior citizens. Sweden is considered one of the best countries in the world to live in.

In spite of this, the municipality is struggling to make ends meet. With a population of just 3000 people it is difficult to get enough tax revenue to keep schools, old age care and health care on desirable levels.

Icemakers, the 40 year-old test company in Arjeplog is the fastest growing company in the north of Sweden. They have increased their turnover more than 400% . Two other local companies, Widmans Gräv (construction) and A-Trä (building) are number 3 and 4.

Mayor, Britta F Jansson and representatives of the villages celebrate this award.
