HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014–15

Meitler ConsultantsDuring 2014-2015, Meitler Consultants ofMilwaukee, Wisconsin, completed a demographicsurvey for the elementary schools in the Diocese ofPaterson. The purpose of the survey was to identifyenrollment trends for elementary education in theDiocese. Information was identified about popula tionby age, Catholics as a percent of population in variousareas of the Diocese, parish data, and the locationsfrom which each school is drawing its currentenrollment. The data gathered will help schools in the process of strategic planning for the future.

education provides students of allgrade levels with a global platformfor authentic learning and exper -iences that will prepare them forfuture studies and careers of thenext generation.” — principal

n “One of our students, who is now ajunior at a Catholic Girls’ High School,is pursuing a career in engin eeringbecause of our STEM pro gram. Shewas in 8th grade the first year ofSTEM implementation. Her wholeattitude about Science changed, fromlittle interest to loving it.” — principal

n “The STEM program at St. Rose hasdefinitely guided Tommy in what he

wants to do in the future. As of now,his plans are to major in Engineeringand become some sort of a mechan i -cal engineer. It’s a great program andSt. Rose should continue it.” — parent

n “The STEM program inspired me tobe who I am today. I was alwaysinterested in science but theactivities we performed then, arewhat really expanded my horizons.

Whether wewere dis sec -ting a wormor creating aballoon powered car, the labs wereinteres ting, fun and most impor -tantly edu cational. They solidified mylove of science and helped merealize I want to be an engineer inmy future.” — student

ACE Curriculum UpdateThe Diocese of Paterson has continued to workthis past school year, 2014-2015, using Notre Dame’sAlliance for Catholic Education partnership, tostrengthen and enhance curricu lum in theelementary and secondary schools. Having alreadycompleted new mathematics, reading and languagearts curricula, principals and teachers have beeninvolved in developing new curricula in science andreligion, which will be completed by June 2016.

Step into the Future of St. Vincent Martyr School

St. Vincent Martyr School, under the direction ofSr. Noreen Holly, has been blessed with an enrol lment that is bursting at the seams! The pro -posed expansion plan will enable St. VincentMartyr School to more adequately house theschool population while maintaining its presentlevel of a super quality education. The proposedaddition includes a 2-story, 6,200 square footaddition with 6 classrooms, 4 bathrooms, a staffbreak out room, an addition of 2 bathrooms to theexisting basement as well as renovations tospecific existing classrooms and modifications tothe existing kitchen area and basement classrooms.

SacredHeart 50Years For the past 50years the chil -dren of SacredHeart School inRock away havebeen shiningbeacons of love,dedica tion andcom pas sionexhibi ting thespirit of theirCatholic faith intheir daily actions. Sister Marie DiLorenzo, principal of Sacred Heart School,was one of the original faculty members and has been principal since 1986.To mark this milestone, the school planned many anniversary events whichwill end with a Golden Jubilee Mass celebrated by Bishop Serratelli on Oct.16, 2015.

St. Mary’s PrepMarks 60 YearsSt. Mary’s Prep has beeneducating children in theDenville area for more than60 years. Blessed with aheritage founded in a caring,faith-filled and family-centered environment, Dr.Margaret McCluskey,principal of St. Mary’s Prep,continues the long-standingcommitment to Catholiceducation. The anniversarycelebration was celebrated inMarch with a Liturgyconcelebrated by BishopSerratelli.

National Blue Ribbon School Award The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program is an award given to high performing schools. Over thecourse of the program, over 7,000 schools in the country have received this award. Assumption School in Morristown received this prestigious award and is recognized as an exemplary high performing schoolbecause its student achievement in English and Mathematics is among the highest in the country (top 15%) as measured by state and national assessments.

Shoes for AfricaPictured is the 3rd grade class of the Academy of St. Francis of Assisi. Theclass is working with the Salesian missionaries to collect and send shoes totheir missions in Kenya, Liberia, Zambia, Tanzania, South Africa.

A liturgy to open theJubilee Year will be celebrated by Bishop Serratelli forprincipals, presidents, pastors, associate pastors, highschool chaplains, and student and faculty represen -tatives from all the Catholic schools in the Diocese,at 10:30 am, at St. Philip the Apostle Church, Clifton.

Terra NovaEach year, students in the diocese take the Terra Nova standardized assessment. This test contains five performance levels —

students who have reached levels 4 or 5 are considered to have achieved mastery of the subject.
