The John L. McCauley Scholarship is a tribute to a beloved coach, advisor, mentor and friend of Portsmouth Abbey School. During his time at the Abbey from 1974-1988, McCauley served as the Head Football Coach, Athletic Director, and Director of Alumni Rela-tions and Development. He is the father of four Portsmouth Abbey alumni: Jack ‘78, Bill ‘79, Mike ‘81 and Rich ‘84.
First awarded in 2009, the John L. McCauley Scholarship has helped Portsmouth Abbey student-athletes achieve excellence in the class-room and on the athletic fields. Former McCauley Scholarship recipi-ents include Ryan Silva ‘10 (Amherst College) and Drake Kreinz ‘12 (Penn State University).

participation are both immediate and enduring. Athletic participation
provides a balance to the academic and spiritual life on campus and
helps to promote a sense of community.

In the long term, athletic participation plays an integral role in the future of Portsmouth Abbey School graduates.
On and off the playing field Portsmouth Abbey School students are encouraged to excel and to achieve to their maximum potential. Our diverse athletic offerings provide boys and girls with equal opportunities in a variety of team and individual sports. Our 25 varsity and 16 sub-varsity athletic teams provide opportunity for the varsity player as well as the developing athlete. Portsmouth Abbey School has an environment where student athletes can achieve academic and athletic excellence.
Portsmouth Abbey students train and compete on our 500-acre campus located along the Narragansett Bay. Our athletic facilities include: 10 playing fields, 2 basketball courts, 30,000 - square - foot squash and fitness center, newly- renovated ice rink, 6 tennis courts, all-weather 6-lane track, locker rooms, and training room. Portsmouth Abbey’s golf teams use the world-class Carnegie Abbey golf course which is adjacent to our campus.
