GREETINGS MUSTANG FANS!Making a difference. Something we all want to accomplish in our lives. When one gives to the Mustang Booster Club, they

are making a difference in the education and future lives of more than 350 student-athletes. Additionally, they are making a

difference in the future success of the Athletics Department and its 17 men’s and women’s sports teams and all that it

provides to our university and community. There are many benefits in becoming a Mustang Booster Club member, which

include tickets, parking, hospitality, Mustang apparel and a variety of unique, up-close experiences with our athletic

program. As a member of the Mustang Booster Club you play a vital role in helping Mustang Athletics achieve success.

Contributions to this important effort support Mustang student-athletes who excel in the classroom, in their sport, and in

The Mustang Booster Club is an organizationdedicated to supporting, promoting andadvancing SMSU athletics.

The objectives of the Mustang Booster Club are:

• To provide scholarship dollars for SMSU athletics.

• To enhance the profile and visibility of the SMSU athletic program, its teams, and its student-athletes.

• To expand the level and scope of support for the SMSU athletic program among thecommunity and alumni.

• To strengthen and establish positive relations with the community and alumniin support of SMSU athletics.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MUSTANG ATHLETE

WHITNEY BURMEISTER, 2015 Spring Semester

• 9:30 am - I wake up in the morning feeling refreshed! After aweekend filled with volleyball, I enjoy sleeping in. I eatbreakfast, throw on some sweats, and head to campusfor an eventful day.

• 10:30 am - My first class of the day is Human Anatomy andPhysiology with Dr. Craner. This is one of my favoriteclasses because the human body never fails to fascinateme!

• 11:20 am - After my first class ends, I head to the Human andWellness Performance Center. Here, I train my clientwho participates in the Schwan Employee WellnessProgram. I love applying knowledge I obtain in theclassroom to practical situations!

• 12:30 am - My second class of the day begins - Introduction toHealth and Physical Education with Professor Strate.Immediately after this class is over, I eat my lunch that Ipacked in the morning and head to my next class.

• 1:30 pm - Motor Learning and Development is my third class of theday! In this class with Professor Jeffers I learnfundamental motor patterns, which I try to relate to all ofthe skills in volleyball!

• 2:20 pm - I’m finally off to the locker room to get ready forvolleyball! I get dressed, mentally focused, and warmedup for the upcoming practice!

• 3:00 pm - Volleyball practice begins! This is my favorite part of theday because I get the opportunity to get better at thesport I love!

• 6:00 pm - Practice comes to an end and all of the equipment is putaway. I need to mentally prepare myself, again, for mylast class of the day.

• 6:30 pm - I have finally reached my last class of the day – SportPsychology! I am extremely lucky to have ProfessorJeffers twice in one day! Even though I have had a longday, he always keeps me engaged in class! I am alsofeeling pretty hungry at this time, so I usually have a lightsnack in this class.

• 8:10 pm - My activities on campus are done for the day so I headback to my apartment. I make myself some supper andsit down to watch a little bit of television.

• 9:00 pm - Now that I am full from supper, I begin working on somehomework. With a busy day of classes, I tend to havequite a few assignments to accomplish!

• 11:00 pm - After diligently working on my schoolwork for a while, Idecide to catch some Zzz’s. I feel incredibly blessed forthe day I have had and cannot wait to start up againtomorrow!

MUSTANG BOOSTER CLUBCIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS

Ag BowlThe 9th Annual Ag Bowl is a community event that celebratesagriculture in southwestern Minnesota. Ag Bowl offers regional FFAChapters and individual participants an opportunity to earn postsecondary scholarship dollars by competing in the Ag BowlScholarship Invitational. Ag Bowl Scholarship Invitational winnersare recognized at Half-time of the Ag Bowl Football Game. Prior tothe Mustang Football game, families are treated to a variety ofactivities at the Regional Event Center. Ag Bowl family activitiesinclude, a youth football clinic, inflatable games, pony rides, livemusic, and barbecue offerings. In addition to the Ag BowlScholarship Invitational and Ag Bowl family activities, participantscan choose to participate in the Ag Bowl Raffle. All proceeds fromthe Ag Bowl Raffle are designated to the SMSU Scholarship Fund.Since its inception, Ag Bowl has received the NCAA’s CivicEngagement Award on two different occasions.

WBCA Pink ZoneThe WBCA Pink Zone is an NCAA sponsored event that raisesawareness and funds for breast cancer treatment and research. EachFebruary at a home women’s and men’s basketball double header,the R/A Facility is decorated pink to show support. The teams andcheerleaders wear special pink warm-ups and uniforms to showsupport for the cause. The women’s basketball team also sells theirwarm-up shirts to students and fans and donates all the proceeds tothe Kay Yow Cancer Fund. At halftime student-athletes and coachesgather on the court to donate at least 10 inches of hair to the Locksof Love program.

SmokefestThis year marks the 9th Annual Smokefest which is an officiallysanctioned Kansas City BBQ Society contest held on the SMSUcampus and hosted by the SMSU Department of Athletics. In 2011Smokefest partnered with the City of Marshall’s Sounds of SummerCelebration. Smokefest serves as the central location for Fridayevening activities during the SOS week long celebration. Each yearnearly 40 barbecue teams descend on Marshall to test their BBQskills in four categories: pork ribs, chicken, pork butt and beefbrisket. Smokefest activities include; kids inflatables, carnivalgames, music, authentic BBQ offerings and a movie hosted at theRegional Event Center on the SMSU Campus. Since its inception,Smokefest has received the NCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on twodifferent occasions.

Mustang MailMustang Mail is a pen pal program created and supported by the MustangBooster Club. All SMSU student-athletes are paired up with students fromMarshall Elementary Schools. Students write and receive letters talking aboutthe importance of school, and what it means to be a Mustang. During thespring semester we host “Mustang Mail Day” at each school and all studentsget the chance to meet their student-athlete pal.

Mustang ShootoutThe Mustang Shootout is a clay shooting competition held annually atShooter’s Sporting Clays in Marshall, MN. Each year nearly one hundredparticipants form teams to compete for the best team and individual scores.The Mustang Booster Club helps sponsor the event with proceeds goingtowards scholarships for student-athletes.

David & Carol Drown SMSU Golf ClassicThe SMSU Golf Classic is SMSU’s longest running fundraiser. In 2011 theSMSU Golf Classic was renamed the David & Carol Drown SMSU GolfClassic. David & Carol Drown first started the event 30 years ago and remainactively involved in the planning of the event each year. This event is hostedby the Mustang Booster Club with proceeds dedicated to student-athletescholarships at SMSU. It includes golf at the Marshall Golf Club.

Gold Rush RaffleThe Gold Rush Raffle is SMSU Athletics’ and the Mustang Booster Club’slargest annual fundraiser. The Raffle is the event to be at on SMSU’s campus.A limited number of tickets are sold for the reverse raffle. Live and silentauctions are also included in the event, along with black jack games and avariety of great prizes. The grand prize of $5000 is awarded to the raffle ticketholder whose name is the last to be drawn throughout the night.

Mustang Stampede Glow RunThe Mustang Stampede is a 5K Walk/Run through SMSU’s campus that bringstogether teams, parents, fans, and alumni in support of SMSU’s women’sathletics teams. Participants can join as individuals or by forming teams. Asocial for all participants or those wanting to support Women’s Athletics (andnot run) takes place in the Regional Event Center Commons where there aresnacks and a cash bar available.

Why did you choose SMSU?I chose SMSU because I was recruited forwheelchair basketball and I really liked theaccessibility of the school and the campus. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS• Gifts totaling a minimum of $10,000 are required to establish an

endowed scholarship fund.• Scholarships are awarded from the endowment in accordance with

the spending policy adopted by the Foundation. (Currently 5% of the three-year average market value of the endowed fund.)

• Gifts totaling less than $10,000 may be classified as a limited term endowment. Additional contributions will be applied to the corpus until the fund reaches the $10,000 minimum endowment level. No awards are made from limited endowment fund until the balance reaches a minimum of $10,000.

• An endowed scholarship may be named and the criteria may be established by the donor.

• A Scholarship Account Contract will be signed that details the scholarship criteria agreed upon between the Foundation and the Donor.

• All gifts to an endowment shall be irrevocable, unless otherwise approved by the Foundation Board of Directors.

The athletic programs at Southwest Minnesota State benefit theentire university and, in turn, our surrounding communities.Whether in NSIC or NCAA competition, Mustang athletesdemonstrate the SMSU commitment to high quality in bothacademics and athletics. The outstanding young women andmen who participate each season for the Mustangs are buildingimportant physical and leadership skills while gaining a superioruniversity education. The Mustangs are working to be the prideof southwestern Minnesota.

Who can join the Mustang Booster Club?All supporters of Mustang Athletics are encouraged to join theMustang Booster Club. You do not have to be an alumnus ofSMSU or a former student-athlete to join.

What is the difference between a restricted gift and anunrestricted gift?

An unrestricted annual gift supports all 17 varsity sports andhelps offset non-budgeted expenses throughout the course of theyear. A restricted contribution is made to a sport specific fund, a capital project or an endowment.

Is my contribution to the Mustang Booster Club taxdeductible?

Yes, it may be tax deductible in full or in part. You will receive agift receipt from the SMSU Foundation for tax purposes.

Tax Information• If you choose to accept your benefit dollars and apparel resulting

from your donation, 60% of your donation is tax deductible.

• If you choose to only accept benefit dollars and decline apparel aspart of your donation, 70% of your donation is tax deductible.

• If you choose to only accept apparel and decline benefit dollars aspart of your donation, 90% of your donation is tax deductible.

• If you choose to decline benefit dollars and apparel, 100% of yourdonation is tax deductible.

After reviewing your package, you can decide that you don’t wantadditional seats or benefits. Since you will not use all of theassigned Benefit Dollars, you could apply those funds to the taxdeductible portion of your donation. You would not beallowed to transfer the remaining $50 to another BoosterClub Member or use it to redeem additional apparel.

The additional benefit of Hoofprint Dollars can be used to redeemapparel online. As a Stampede Level member, you would beentitled to use 125 Hoofprint Dollars to spend on MustangApparel/Novelty items. If you choose not to use all 125Hoofprint Dollars, your tax deductible donation would increase bythe unused amount.

You would not be allowed to transfer the unused balanceto another Booster Club Member or use it to secure ticketpackages, preferred parking passes or chairback upgrades.
