C) Organització del grup Group organisation

(2 pàgines com a màxim) / State clearly the scientific challenges or strategic objectives for the next 3 years, taking into account the fact that the aim is to consolidate, maintain or increase research of excellence in your field, internationalisation and increase knowledge transfer (maximum 2 pages) Applied Geography (AG) is a long established group, which since 1994 all members have worked in collaboration. Joint activity is conducted under specific challenges and strategic objectives, with several complementary topics enhancing mutual strengths. Despite AG’s long history, our fundamentals have adapted to new societal challenges, learning from positive and negative research results, and from discussions with diverse colleagues. The strategic objective of AG for the next 3 years is to increase research excellence, internationalization and knowledge transfer (see specifics on Part C4), by strengthening internal collaboration and increasing publishing in top academic platforms, transferring results to society and stakeholders, and diffusing conclusions to civil society (both private and public), under the following structural topics: quality of life, biodiversity, sustainability and risks. Social science is now multidisciplinary and multi-focused. EU, ERC, and important research programs prompt a more inclusive interpretation of social matters, territories and topics. This AG group strategy is to be interdisciplinary (with outside collaborations, and from within, we embrace the many approaches of Geography), international (with collaborations with individuals and groups) and interuniversity related (with competitive coordinated projects). This strategy is aimed at achieving the highest frontiers of research and science. AG is organized according to 3 research lines (see Figure 1). Line of Research 1 (LR1) Environmental dynamics in natural landscapes influenced by natural and human factors (Human landscape on ecological systems, climate change) (Topics addressed: biodiversity, sustainability/risk). Line of Research 2 (LR2) Urban dynamics in high and medium density areas (Allocation of services and green urban areas, impacts on cities (Big Data) and in urban interphase territories (wildland fires), social economic activity and economic spaces) (Topics addressed: quality of life and biodiversity). Line of Research 3 (LR3) Structural systems dynamics relating population and sustainability (Mobility, public spaces, health, ageing and infant population, natural ventilation, soil sealing and energy saving, noise). (Topics addressed: quality of life, sustainability/risk). About the large scope of the group’s knowledge and global societies and spaces. In the 21st century, activities and problems are very spatially spread, and more global solutions are required (Global Megatrends, European Environmental Agency 2015). Air pollution originating in a region is transported to, and affecting another. The original dichotomy of rural-urban space is now a continuous path and they now require holistic consideration: the city without boundaries, and the rural as a continuum of more urban territories. This is because problems have no frontiers and true solutions are without borders. For instance, climate change affects population everywhere, but the causes of this climate change are linked to environmental dynamics of oceans and mountains, which are simultaneously affected by urban populations exploiting these environments. Our research lines work at different scales and population density degrees. In this sense, the concept of urban and rural is a segment, along which are variations in population density. Under this scenario, the AG group will work toward studying problem origins and the resulting factors. We propose solutions through sustainable operations that broadly affect society. In addition, our objective is to allow empowerment of users and citizens to play a bigger role in this transition and the management of territories in transition. Our AG structural strategic objective is to analyze the organizational dynamics of quality of life, as a concept integrating the main topics in spaces of different population density, which represents a complexity challenge in strategic management. Our AG scientific challenge is to analyze the main

factors and the interrelations associated with them, and to transfer and disseminate results for management and strategic policy driven institutions. LR1. Environmental dynamics in natural landscapes influenced by natural and human factors. Specific objective: To analyze the human influence to biodiversity and climate change. Members: 1, 2, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 20 (see C5). 1. Human landscape on ecological systems. How long have natural systems been managed by

humans? When did human presence become significant, and to what degree has human impact influenced natural dynamics and biodiversity? For instance, environmental geohistory incorporates value-added dimensions and empowers socioecological systems, as well as contributing to landscape management (Biosphere Reserves, National and Natural Parks) for a better quality of life.

2. Climate change. Climate processes have conditioned ecological systems and modified human activities and behaviors. Long-term data is needed to better discern and characterize current patterns locally, regionally, and globally. For example, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) of the last 2,000 years (pre- and post - anthropogenic interglacial climate) helps calibrate and parameterize models used to foresee 21st century impacts on oceanic and atmospheric processes (e.g. precipitation). These bear directly on one of the most important factors for human population, availability of drinking water.

LR2. Urban dynamics in high and medium density areas. Specific objective: To understand the processes for changes taking place in the spatial organisation of urban and urbanized territories. Members: 1, 4, 5, 9, 16, 17, 18, 21, 22, 23 (see C5). 3. Services and green urban areas. Allocation of services (schools, health) and “green

infrastructure” are considered of increased importance, because the former increases the supply of “good benefits” to population, decreasing spatial injustice; and the latter are nature based solutions for urban environmental problems and public health. i.e., flood protection, air quality, contra resting climate change effects, such as to reduce air pollution, and regulate the water cycle. The amount of services and their availability to populations are key components in the urban context.

4. Impacts on cities (Big Data) and in urban interphase territories (fires). Most global cities base their economic activities on selling their attractiveness and capturing global demand. Then the concentration of tertiary activities and visitors in certain areas aggravate local quality of life, diminishing sustainability by emitting negative external scale economies. Analyses based on Big Data (Panoramio, Flickr and Twitter) offer better understanding of preferences and could delineate those factors for future policy making of how to manage cities. One of the major problems caused by suburbanization is the exposure of populations to wildfire risks. Research on causes, management and prevention are vital for public authorities. Social economy and co-working spaces sprung from last economic crisis impact on cities increasing competitiveness and changing human relationships. Rural farming has added value to rural areas and increased quality of life specifically to the handicapped population.

LR3. Structural system dynamics relating population and sustainability. Specific objective: To interpret urban organization and sustainable development understanding how population use and adapt structural systems to improve their urban living. Members: 1, 3, 6, 7, 19, 21, 22, 23 (see C5).

5. Sustainable mobility, public spaces, and health (infant and ageing population). Walkability and alternative modes of transportation of infants and aging population can influence health, generate different mobility patterns, and modify use of public spaces. Research focused on generating sustainable strategies implement quality of life of territories.

6. Natural ventilation, soil sealing and energy saving. Insolation and winds impact the morphology of cities, as well as the degree of sealing, with impact on the urban heat island effect and disruption to the water cycle. Research based on high resolution satellite images provides quality assessment measures of soil sealing and insolation, which give valuable bases for research.

7. Noise. The impact of noise in population is an increasing concern for policy makers and health practitioners. Cultural differences help define perception of a noisy environment. For instance, Mediterranean countries are more permissive than Northern European countries. Levels of population exposure to different noise sources and noise bands (Dutch Institute for Public Health

and the Environment) inside as well as outside cities has given results of noise limits on health impact in Europe.

Continuing the path adopted during the period 2014-2106 (2014SGR1090) this 2017-2019 proposal has similar grounding principles. The Applied Geography SGR’s projects involve management and planning of the territory, from natural, socioeconomic and socio-cultural approaches; embracing their corresponding environmental, productive and social processes. To this end, the organizational structure of the group reflects the linkages among diversity in the thematic approaches; which are at the same time complementary and different. This is a strategic line we pursue because the scientific structures must be investigated at different geographical spaces and at different temporal and geographical scales. To this end, we establish linkages of research among the AG members as can be seen in Figure 1, and specified in section C1. Figure 1. The organizational structure of the group has a hierarchy constructed for a maximum working efficiency. At the first level the PI (Dr. Pallares-Barbera) of the project coordinates the group, ensures the following: (a) The coordination of the lines of research, expressed in the previous section (C1); (b) Watches over to increase the group's joint strategy and favoring the transfer to public and private agents; (c) She is in charge of adjusting the research to RRI perspective and of the communication and dissemination of research (C3); Encourages the search for financing and the quest for talent. In a second hierarchical level there are the PIs directly responsible for each Research Line. These have the primary responsibility to achieve the group's partial objectives, publish their research in prestigious magazines and publishers, seek funding in their thematic area and ensure the composition of the subgroup encouraging the continuing education of doctors. The good performance of this structure is guaranteed by a meeting twice a year between the PI and the ones responsible for the research lines. A first meeting is organized at the beginning of Fall. It serves to plan

expenses and objectives of the academic year. A second meeting in the second semester serves to adjust the pace of the objectives and presentation of partial results. Individually, each area manager meets at any time of the year with the PI of the SGR to manage the day to day and possible opportunities throughout the year. The main changes in the composition of this group over the one of the previous period are related to the increase in the number of doctors that join the group: 16 to 23 doctors. This has been possible thought the incorporation of younger personnel; which implies a rejuvenation of the group and energies in order to maintain the quality of the SGR. In addition, a postdoctoral researcher Dr. Raquel Cunill, which is a JIN (Jóvenes Investigadores) Program of the MINECO, has been incorporated. This contributes to growth the expertise in historical forest fires and pedoanthracology, between LR1 and LR3. Besides, there has been an incorporation of researcher Núria Blanes (INTERFASE-UAB) with skills and experience in noise and green areas in cities. She is also an expert in international projects, FP7th, H2020; she will work in between LR2 and LR3. There has been a spin-off of Dr. Antònia Casellas; she will form a new SGR group. Since the last SGR the structure of the group has been strengthened (Figure 2). Fifty percent of the group members are civil servants or interim associates and the rest includes a wide range of figures that combine the expertise of emeritus professors, postdoctoral researchers and a large number of Ph.D. students (6 scholars) and research support technicians (5 members). The current and future joint trajectory of the group is shown in Figure 3. The research and other academic relationships between the group doctors (23 doctors from a total of 30 members) are represented by the black X’s. For the future agenda, in order to grow in a fully integrated and coordinated way, Dr. Pallares-Barbera (number 14), the project PI, plans to (a) to increasingly strengthening the links among to all members; (b) specifically enforcing the potential some lines, the red X’s). The AG group future challenges will go through consolidating the trend of working the diversity to get synergy for stronger results benefiting the management and territorial planning which the AG group has presented.

The Applied Geography group is by its nature embracing many of the RRI perspective. This has been done during a long period of time and it is increasing as the group advances in research. The AG group is including in its core objectives an open science and innovation approach that tackles societal challenges in a polyedric perspective. Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) of the AG group has very deep implications. In this sense, we have worked with societal actors (researchers, citizens, policy makers, business, third sector organizations) during the whole research and innovation process in order to better align both the process and its outcomes with the values, needs and expectations of society. Major challenges that society faces today, such as climate changes and ageing population are part of our research and our goals, as it is specify in section C1 of this form. Through all AG life the group increasingly has incorporated a critical thinking, pursuing to contribute to social and economic prosperity of spaces. The knowledge based society requirements intrinsically linked public and private agents and civil society are been participating in all phases of the group progress. Our network of society agents has been very decisive to understand the needs, values and expectations of society and our research has been, directed to increase progress in life. Our general goal in pursuing this research has been to involve social and ethical controversies regarding our topic. Under this base, we try our research to be open and transparent at all levels; it needs to be reflective and reactive to social needs and inclusive in its expectations. Our main topics, meaning quality of life, sustainability and risk are very much engaged in building desirable futures. We do this by engaging all actors and decisions, from civil society organizations, private sector and policy makers to our research in the academic group. We hope our results would be directed to build policies towards a more inclusive, smart and sustainable society, which focuses on the grand challenges that we face.

1. Actions taken by AG to include RRI gender

The parity gender in our group is 33,3% women, which has been increasing as a strategy to incorporate the most balance gender vision and goals. The PI is a woman, and most of the managers of RL are women. In our research we take into account the variable gender as an important one for the analysis; and in the CVs of the members are many publications on gender and social capital as well as women in political organizations.

2. Actions taken by AG to include RRI public participation Public participation takes different forms: (a) in the data recollection. Neighborhood associations, civil leaders, unions have participated through in-depth interviews, focus groups, field trip knowledge acquisition. For instance, our study of the 22@Barcelona different agents has given us information; we made seminars presenting our results, and engaging in fruitful discussions that allow research to tackle a step forward. (b) Our results have been presented in different platforms and discussed by different local and institutional groups, nationally and internationally.

3. Actions taken by AG to include RRI open access We are combining our publications to include open access data. Our data bases and working documents are archive in the Open Access repository in the UAB_DDD managed by the UAB library. Besides, the group has different tools to disseminate their research and make it available to society.

The different lines of the group have specific web pages with the information of the research carried out and in progress and that of the members that compose them. Under this base, we try our research to be open and transparent at all levels; it needs to be reflective and reactive to social needs and inclusive in its expectations. Our main topics, meaning quality of life, sustainability and risk are very much engaged in building desirable futures.

5. Actions taken by AG to include RRI scientific education The members of the team drive and participate in courses organized in: - Regulated degree courses, undergraduate courses. - Master courses. - Specific training courses for technicians: PAT Days of Social Agriculture, Forest Guidance Courses, Courses for secondary school teachers, conferences of the EIMUS (Iberoamericana Encuentro Iberoamericano de Movilidad Urbana), School Road Courses. In addition, members of the groups are in the coordination and direction of different masters and seminars; such as Coordination of official Master's degrees (Master's Degree in Territorial and Population Studies, Interuniversity Master's with City Planning and Policy, Environment and Landscape, and Master's in Geoinformation (offered jointly with the ICC).

6. Actions taken by AG to include RRI governance Our engaging in knowledge transfer (i.e., “the transfer of tangible and intellectual property, expertise, learning and skills between academia and the non-academic community.” (Cambridge U, 2017)) has been linked to institutions, such as Diputació de Barcelona, through seminars at different stages of our research, which has provided an enormous input and feedback for our research and their daily work (See Figure 5. Map on transfer and relationships). We work together with other public administrations in the development of public policies such as the Observatory with the Besòs- Tordera Consortium for monitoring the socio-ecological cycle of the Tordera i Besós river basin. - Transfer and scientific dissemination of results (Figure 4) OAs it has been said our engagement in knowledge transfer (i.e., “the transfer of tangible and intellectual property, expertise, learning and skills between academia and the non-academic community.” (Cambridge U, 2017)) is wide. It is linked to institutions through seminars at different stages of our research, which has provided an enormous input and feedback for our research and their daily work. The dissemination of the group's research still has a different side by the hand of the numerous national, state and international conferences that have been made by the members of the group. In total there have been 114 and 85 international and national conferences, respectively, on quality of life in cities, acoustic pollution, global change, urban green and urban mobility. We organize jointly with the Federación Iberoamericana de Urbanistas the following “Seminario internacional “Pontevedra: una ciudad modelo. Premio calidad de vida urbana”, (febrero 2015) Coordinación por parte de Pau Avellaneda y Montserrat Pallares-Barbera. - Press and general media. The research carried out by the group has a great impact on the press, both written and audiovisual. In this area, it is important to highlight the different media scales that range from local press - regional and even from university campuses to national media. As mentioned, the presence of the group in the media has been from daily or weekly newspapers written to televisions and radios. The formats have been diverse: news about the results of the research, interviews with members and interventions based on specific problems about some aspects (such as episodes of large traffic congestions) (See Table 1). Beside what has been said before, the Applied Geography group is Planning the enforce the societat relationship of the research to all levels of it by founding what is going to be called: “AG Cocreation process to engage research and innovation to society.” This program will include membres of society, membres of universities, and it will have and agenda of diferent steps to create a route page including all concerns, of society to the AG group research and development. Then to transfer and disseminate the results back to the stakehoders involved in this project. 2. Data sets, and evidence of social impact
