Precautions

Health and Safety Precautions:

Only qualified professionals are authorized to carry out maintenance on this device.

• Read the Users’ Manual carefully, and follow the correct procedures when setting up the device.

• Do not open your Kyrion or attempt to disassemble or modify it, unless instructed by an ATEME representative. To avoid any risk of electrical shock, fire, short-circuiting or dangerous emissions, never insert any metallic object into the enclosure. Your Kyrion contains no user-serviceable parts. If it appears to be malfunctioning, have it inspected by a qualified ATEME Technical Support representative.

• Never expose your device to rain, use it near water, or in damp or wet conditions. Never place objects containing liquids on the Kyrion, as they may spill into its openings; doing so increases the risk of electrical shock, short-circuiting, fire or personal injury.

• Basic electrical safety precautions should be followed to protect yourself from harm and the system from damage :

• Be aware of where the On/Off power switch is situated on the chassis; as well as the rack’s emergency power off- switch. Check where the disconnection switch or electrical outlet is located.

• Do not work alone when working with high voltage components. • Power should always be disconnected from the system before opening it. When

disconnecting the power, you should first power down the system and unplug the power cords of the power supply.

• Use only the provided power supply cord to power the Kyrion. This power supply cord includes a grounding plug that must be plugged into a grounded electrical outlet. If you should use a different power supply cord, make sure it is compatible with your local electrical power supply.

• A reliable ground must be maintained at all times. To ensure this always plug a ground cord to the ground terminal at the back of the system before using it.

• This product contains a lithium battery: extreme caution should be taken if this battery needs to be replaced –if the onboard battery is installed upside down polarities will be reversed and there will be a risk of explosion. This battery must be replaced only with the same or an equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Dispose of used batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions.

General Use Precautions:

• Do not expose the Kyrion to temperatures outside the range of 0° C to 40° C (32° F to 104° F) while operating, or 0° C to 70° C (32°F to 158° F) during storage. Do not expose the Kyrion to humidity outside the range of 5% to 90%, non-condensing while operating or storage. Doing so may damage the Kyrion or disfigure its casing. Avoid placing your Kyrion near a source of heat or exposing it to sunlight (even through a window). Inversely, placing your Kyrion in an environment that is too cold or humid may damage the unit. Place the Kyrion in a well-ventilated space, and allow up to 10cm of free space on all sides of the Kyrion for increased air circulation and cooling.

• Always unplug the Kyrion from the electrical outlet if there is a risk of lightning or if it will remain unused for an extended period of time. Otherwise, there is an increased risk of electrical shock, short-circuiting or fire.

• Do not place heavy objects on top of the Kyrion or push hard on it. • Never use excessive force on your Kyrion. If you detect a problem, consult the

Troubleshooting section in this manual. • Protect your Kyrion from excessive exposure to dust during use or storage. Dust

can build up inside the device, increasing the risk of damage or malfunction. • Never use benzene, paint thinners, detergents or other chemical products to clean

the outside of the Kyrion. Such products will disfigure and discolor the casing. Instead, use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the device.

Caution! The Kyrion's warranty may be void as a result of the failure to respect the precautions listed above.

KyrionAS2204 is a fully programmable hardware design and the only one offering the complete set of MPEG-4/AVC tools including full support of interlaced video (MBAFF). ATEME MPEG-4/AVC encoding technology currently enjoys the world’s widest deployment and has been commercially available for more than two years. The ATEME Kyrion Encoder product benefits from this unique experience by enabling in real-time state-of-the-art compression algorithms

The ATEME KyrionAS2204 is the first Multi Channel SD MPEG-4/AVC encoder targeting a broad range of DTV applications. No IT Expertise Needed

To meet your needs for optimized encoding and easy integration of hardware into your existing applications, Kyrion can be set up effortlessly without any technical expertise. Offering seamless installation, KyrionAS2204 can be supervised and controlled via any web browser from a remote computer. Use the intuitive web-based management tool for easy configuration. 2.3.3. Air Intake

Air Intakes prevent abnormal temperature rises inside the unit. Place the Kyrion in a well-ventilated space, and allow up to 10cm of free space on all sides of the Kyrion in order to increase air circulation and cooling.

Caution! Never obstruct air intakes. Beware of 19’’ bay doors, if any.

2.3.4. Status LEDs

The Kyrion comes with a complete range of LEDs that report the device status.

2.3.5. TFT Screen

The screen displays status information, configuration menus and live video monitoring for each input.

2.3.6. Roller TouchPAD

The Roller TouchPAD is used for configuration when navigating the local setup menu of the Kyrion. Use the Accept and Cancel button to set the encoder.

2.3.7. Power Supply Fan Output

This fan prevents a temperature rise inside the Power supply.

Caution! Never obstruct this air output.

Note: Fans are wear items and might need to be replaced periodically (not covered by warranty).

2.3.8. AC Inlet (~AC)

Connect the provided cable to this inlet. The Kyrion auto detects AC voltage and accepts 100V to 240V ~AC (47to 63 Hz).

2.3.9. Power Switch

Use this switch to turn ON the unit. The power indicator LED should immediately light up in orange to indicate boot sequence. Switch it back to the original position to turn OFF the unit.

2.3.10. Serial Number and Production Code Markings

The sticker contains the serial number and production code references. Please provide this information when contacting your dealer for technical support.

2.3.11. MGT Ethernet Connector 1 & 2

This dedicated Ethernet connector allows administration of the Kyrion via the Web or SNMP. This interface is a Gigabit capable Ethernet port (1000Mbps). 1000Mbps - To transmit at 1000Mbps requires Category 6 TP cabling that must use all Four (4) pairs twisted-pair wire forRJ-45 connector. 100Mbps - To transmit at 100Mbps requires Category 5 TP cabling. 10Mbps - When transmitting at 10Mbps Category 3, 4 or 5 TP cabling with RJ-45 sockets can be used.

3. Setting up your Kyrion device

Step 1: Unpack your Kyrion unit and install it: � For Stand Alone installation, place the unit on a stable surface. It requires

clearance above and on each side to allow for cooling. � Alternatively, for Rack installation, mount the unit in a standard 19-inch rack.

The Kyrion requires 1U of vertical space. Note for Rack installation: Carefully slide the Kyrion into a shelf space in the rack. Use your equipment rack’s screws to secure the device in place, in the rack. Step 2: Connect the Kyrion System to a power outlet using the provided power cord. Step 3: Connect the network cables to Ethernet interfaces.

� The Stream interface should be plugged into your broadcast network � The Admin interface should be plugged into your supervision network

Note: If you do not have different networks, using the streaming port to do both broadcasting and administration is possible. This is not recommended for production phases. Step 4: Connect the SD-SDI input cable. Step 5: Power up the Kyrion, switching the 0/1 button into the position 1.

� After a few seconds, a BOOTING message should appear on the LCD. � The front Panel selection menu appears once the unit is up and running.

4. Planning the configuration

The Kyrion Broadcast Encoder System is an integrated management and encoding tool. When operated for the first time the encoder will use factory default network addresses. Mapping out your system in advance will help you manage the different IP addresses, net masks and gateways used within your network and to properly setup your Kyrion

encoder(s). An example of a system design is given below.

5. Choosing the configuration tool

Managing the growing complexity of broadcast systems is time-consuming and expensive, challenging a company’s strategic objectives of reducing total cost of ownership (TCO). Part of this complexity comes from a growing and diverse set of tools required to manage a heterogeneous infrastructure including servers, switches, encoders, decoders and storage solutions. The Kyrion broadcast encoder can help you automate and simplify your overall system architecture. The Kyrion includes advanced management capabilities including automated deployment, lights-out administration and a unified interface for managing multiple devices. These tools help you manage the underlying complexity of your system architecture, improve productivity, and lower TCO. There are 2 different ways to configure your Kyrion: Front Panel access and Web based interface. Choose the appropriate one depending on your overall system’s design.

5.1. LCD Panel and Roller TouchPAD

The Kyrion family has a local LCD panel & Roller TouchPAD interface allowing easy management of the unit, for testing or production purposes. The LCD panel provides a simple method of setting the network interface addresses and default gateway parameters directly from the front of the Kyrion System without using a management computer. No IT knowledge is required; the Kyrion can be up and running in minutes, encoding live video with high picture quality and optimal compression ratios.

5.2. Web Based Configuration

The Kyrion family web-based interface is a unified, crystal clear management tool for your Kyrion. This tool targets people ranging from simple users, who want a unified interface, to advanced users, who need detailed access to Encoding parameters. Requirements:

� Ethernet connection between the Kyrion and a remote management computer.

� Any browser on the remote management computer.

6. Configuring your Kyrion unit

6.1. Roller TouchPAD and LCD panel

The Kyrion Encoder provides two ways to set the encoder by Web or by using the front panel. The "Roller TouchPAD" offers a sensitive surface which is able to detect movement and pressure. By using the Roller PAD, you can easily navigate through the menu displayed on the LCD panel and select options or values by using the “Accept” and “Cancel” buttons. Using this interface, it is simple to configure IP addresses, default gateways and basic Encoding settings without having to use the web-based manager or SNMP supervisor.

6.1.1. Menu Navigation

The Roller TouchPAD allows for navigation, selection, and changing of values through a circular finger motion. To increase a value or scroll up a menu, move your finger clockwise. To decrease a value or scroll down a menu, move your finger counter-clockwise. To increase or move the selection, use a circular left to right movement. To decrease or move the selection, use a circular right to left movement. To navigate through the different menus, use the Roller TouchPAD. When you’ve highlighted an icon, accept or cancel activation by touching the ACCEPT or CANCEL button icon.

• The ACCEPT button allows validation or sub menu navigation.

• The CANCEL button cancels settings or return back to the previous menu

6.1.2. Booting Sequence

During the Boot sequence, the Kyrion Encoder displays a welcome message:

6.1.3. Entering Maintenance Mode

After a few seconds, the display will switch to the Maintenance screen.

Figure 6-3Maintenance Screen This screen will be displayed for 10 seconds. During this period, you may select any icon on the front panel to access the maintenance sub-menu. Choose the action that you wish to perform using the roller TouchPAD; press the ACCEPT Button to confirm. If you select “Continue”, the Kyrion will continue booting.

6.1.4. Firmware Menu

From the “Maintenance” menu, enter the “Firmware Menu” Sub-menu. The screen displays the Firmware Version / System version.

6.1.7. Restoring Factory Default Configuration

From the “Maintenance” menu, enter the “System” Sub-menu, and select “Factory” item. Restoring Factory Settings resets your encoder with Factory Settings, i.e :

• All custom configurations are erased. • Encoder restarts default factory settings including original firmware release.

Note: Use this option when troubles occurs or system becomes unstable.

Using this function erases only the customs user configurations stored in your encoder.

6.1.9. Restore System Parameters

To backup all system parameters (i.e. firmware parameters and configuration files), enter the “Backup System” Sub-menu from the “Maintenance” screen. After confirmation the Kyrion will continue booting. All configuration files containing parameter presets are saved for a later Restore operation. To restore the system settings, follow the 4 steps described below.

From the “Maintenance” menu, select the “Continue” Option, to complete the boot sequence. When using “Continue”, no parameter changes are applied. If no actions are taken, the boot sequence continues automatically.

6.1.13. Network

Selecting this function gives access to the Network settings; you can manage and set each of the 4 Ethernets ports.

• MGT 1 & 2 are dedicated to the management Ports.

• ETH 1 & 2 are dedicated to the streaming ports.

Select the Ethernet Port you want to configure by using the Roller TouchPAD.

After selecting a port, the screen pictured below appears. You are able to configure all the network parameters. For some parameters, you can chose between different sets.

Use Roller TouchPAD to navigate through different items and press ACCEPT button to select the good one. To apply the new configuration, select APPLY item and ACCEPT button. Use this method to configure all the Ethernet Ports.

6.1.14. Ethernet Address/Mask/Gateway Configuration

To set the address, mask or gateway values, use the Roller TouchPAD, select the appropriate item and press ACCEPT. The screen pictured below is displayed (for example, setting an IP address). Use the Roller TouchPAD to increase and decrease values for each field. The current field is inversed. Once the desired value is set, press ACCEPT to shift to another field. The first field is starts to the left of the IP address. You must go to the last field (right position) and press ACCEPT to enter the entire value. Use the Roller TouchPAD to Accept or Cancel the value.

6.1.15. Configuration Menu

You can configure each encoder using this menu.

To edit a configuration, use Select/Edit and press ACCEPT button. The following screen is displayed:

This screen allows the user to perform several operations on the selected Service

• Start : Select this icon to start the encoder • Stop : Select this icon to stop the encoder • Edit : Select this icon to edit the current configuration

The Edit icon allows the user to view the selected configuration. The screen displays video/audio and others parameters. In this mode, the user is able to edit the configuration, to select another stored configuration, but not to modify its default values, except for Enable/Disable Service.

Use Apply to Enable/Disable the service by pressing ACCEPT button. The user can review all parameters by using the Roller TouchPAD. The screen scrolls to show other parameters.

6.1.16. System Menu

The System Menu allows for viewing the status of the system’s actions:

• Firmware Icon shows the Firmware Release / System Release Number. • Alarm logs shows Alarms Pending , History and logs • Status gives information about Temperature and Uptime. • Reboot performs a reboot of the encoder; restarts, reloads the last

configuration and starts to stream automatically. • Shutdown allows the user to shutdown the encoder. The encoder stops

automatically.

6.1.17. Live Menu

The Live Menu is one of Kyrion’s most useful features. With On Screen Live Video, the user can view all channels, one by one. The incoming video is displayed on the screen allowing the user to control the content and quality of incoming video for each channel. After making a choice, the screen displays the video of the selected channel. If the video input doesn’t match the specified format set by the configuration, the background of the screen will be blue to indicate a potential problem. Select Watch All produces a sequence that displays all the channels one by one. To process, press ACCEPT button.

6.2. Web-based Manager

The Kyrion includes an embedded web server that provides management through a universal interface that is accessible from anywhere on the network. The graphical Web based interface features the following:

� Display of the Kyrion’s physical condition: Temperature, fan speeds and other environmental parameters of the chassis are all logged in an easy-to-read format allowing for a quick assessment of the system working order.

� Lower control monitoring: You can reboot the system by remote control. � Easy Configuration management: You can save up to 10 ‘Configuration’

files with clear names and re-use them after reboot. � On the fly changes on Video/Audio parameters: You can set new

parameters on-the-fly. The Kyrion will stop and re-start encoding without the need for you to manually perform the action.

� Advanced parameters handling: The Web interface allows you to control the Filters (3:2 pulldown, aspect ratio, gains, delay, resizing, re-sampling,…) on both Audio and Video

� Muxer Service configuration: Use and create services with PIDs, � Encoder Advanced tuning options: Profile, rate control, bitrate, GOP, CPB

size, Look ahead, deblocking, entropy, B-frame, Psycho-visual enhancement, copyright flag insertion, etc…

To connect the Kyrion system interface to a management computer through the Ethernet connection:

� Use a cross-over Ethernet cable to connect the devices directly. � Use straight through Ethernet cables to connect the devices through a hub or

switch. Configure both the management computer and Kyrionto be on the same subnet. To do this, two solutions are possible:

� Change the IP address of the management computer to 192.168.128.2 (for example) and the netmask to 255.255.255.0

or � Change the Kyrion network parameters to match your network architecture.

Since you are not starting on the same sub-nets, you must use the front panel interface at first boot. Note: To access the Kyrion web-based manager, start any Web browser and browse to http://192.168.128.1 This is the Factory default IP address of the MGT port.

6.2.1. Log into the Web Server

First of all, you will have to log onto the Web server. To do so, enter the Login and password. In each field, on the first attempt to access the unit, just type in admin and admin. Warning: Password and Login are case sensitive. Default Login and Password can (highly recommended) be changed in the System tab of the Web interface (please refer to 6.2.11 System Page, on page 52of this document for more details).

6.2.2. Web Based GUI Overview

Once logged in, the Web server of the Kyrion will display its management environment. This environment is divided into 4 main areas:

� Product name � Product reference: This product reference can be used when contacting the

support service. � Navigation bar : Use this navigation bar to access all system

parameters. Clicking on each Tab of this navigation bar will update the Active Area located just below.

� Active Area : Displays the parameters associated with the current Menu.

6.2.3. Status Page

This page provides an overview of current Kyrion device. It displays some general information, a summary of current services and a message log. General information:

� System name: fully editable name that may be used to discriminate between Kyrion of the same kind. See the ‘System’ page to edit this name.

� System Version: the unified version of your device. � System Temperature: this field allows the user to detect abnormal situations.

Abnormal temperatures will raise alarms in this page’s “Message Log”. � Network Interface: summarises the network IP addresses used on both IP

interfaces.

The ‘Active Configuration’ area gives a summary of all services configured on the Kyrion. You can ‘start’ or ‘stop’ configurations directly from this area. Just press the button associated with each service. The ‘Message log’ area displays a queue of messages. Messages are tagged with a graphical banner indicating level of importance. The banner may reflect normal state, warnings or critical issues. Critical issues are always located at the top of the list, so that you have them under control at all times. Less important issues are following. You can flush the list at any time, by pressing the ‘Flush’ button associated with this area. In general, any problem with the device input/ output or configuration will be highlighted in red.

This page is used for allows managing different configurations –encoder parameter pre-sets.

Figure 6-11Configuration page To manage the encoder configurations, you can perform the following actions:

� Import: reset all current parameters of the Encoder with the one stored in the configuration file that you can import using the Browse button. The parameters are not applied to the encoder; they just displayed in the corresponding fields of the parameters. Imported files are physically located on your remote computer and therefore named as ‘External Configuration’, from the Kyrion point of view.

� Load: will reset all current parameters of the Encoder with the one stored in the configuration file that you can choose within the associated drop-box. The parameters are not applied to the encoder. They are just displayed in the corresponding fields of the parameters. Loaded files are physically stored on the Kyrion itself and therefore named as ‘Know Configurations’.

� Apply: will stop the encoder, reprogram it with the current displayed parameters, and then restart the encoder.

� Export: will store the current displayed parameters into the configuration shown in the drop-box.

� Rename: allows you to change the name of a given configuration, if needed. Configuration names are limited to 32 letters.

WARNING: If parameters have been changed using the front panel interface, you need to have previously updated your browser’s web pages to guarantee that the displayed fields are up to date, before editing and saving.

6.2.5. Inputs Page

This page allows you to configure the Video and Audio input parameters. You can ‘Discard’, ‘Set’ or ‘Apply’ parameters by simply clicking on the buttons located in the upper most region of the current page.

� Discard: will reset the fields to the current parameters. � Set: will save the currently displayed parameters but without interacting with

the encoder. This allows you to build complex configurations spread over multiple pages.

� Apply: will stop and start the encoder with the currently displayed parameters.

To change a parameter, click on combo-box buttons to gain access to available options.

The Video area, displays the following parameters:

� Video Standard: please refer to the datasheet fo the list of supported video formats.

� Display Aspect Ratio: 4/3 or 16/9 may be forced depending on the chosen video format. The auto-detect option will activate signalling detection of any AFD/WSS flag in the input stream.

� Input Emulation: defines the internal source behaviour, in case you want to test the equipment with a known reference.

You can also reboot the system by clicking on the Reboot button located in the upper right corner.

Do not try to update this page, because any update will start a new reboot of the device. Instead, leave the page and try to reconnect to the web server from the IP address of the Kyrion.

Note: trying to update the page will prompt you with a popup window. Just, click

Cancel on this popup. The upper part of the page gives general information on the system:

� System ID: is a factory system number hard coded in the Kyrion. � System Name: is a readable character string that can be changed at will. Just

type in the name you want to affect to the device and click on Set to store the field.

� System version: gives you a reference revision number of the package installed on your machine.

� System Temperature: indicates the temperature measured inside the unit. � System Time � Manual Time Update: can be used to force a date and time into the system. � NTP Server: Tick this option if you want to synchronize the timer of the Kyrion

with a network server and indicate the IP address of the server.

The Network area is related to MGT1 & 2, and Stream 1 & Stream 2 port parameters:

� Disabled: means that the considered port is not in use � Obtain IP automatically (DHCP): means the Kyrion will automatically contact a

DHCP server to get an available IP address. If no DHCP server is available on the network, the Kyrion will fail and the associated port won’t be used.

� Use following IP parameters: is used for static configuration. If using this mode you must provide a valid IP address, netmask and Gateway address.

The Firmware area is dedicated to Firmware management. From this section you can upload a new firmware package onto the Kyrion by clicking on the ‘browse’ button. A “Browse for file” box should popup on the screen. Point to the update package and click “OK”. The update procedure will stop the Kyrion, apply the new package and reboot. During the update process the LDCD will display update information and the Web interface will display an animated busy icon (see below).

8. Troubleshooting

8.1. Case 1: Problem with an Update package

When Updating the Package, the Kyrion reboots but the revision number remains the same. This can occur when the lithium battery of the Kyrion is empty or if the BIOS as been accidentally lost. In that situation, the system date is reset at boot to year 2000 and the package date is tagged as invalid by the device. If this is the case, you can verify the problem by checking the Log messages on the Status page. To solve this issue, you have 2 solutions. First solution:

� Activate the NTP synchronization in the System Tab or force the time and date of the system by manually inputting the correct value.

� Restart the Encoder in order to get an entry in the Log file, to be sure that the NTP server as been reached or that your manual adjustment has been taken into account. The Log should display the correct date.

� After 1 minute, the update should start automatically. o If it doesn’t, go to the System page and perform the update again.

Second solution:

� Contact your dealer to receive a replacement Lithium battery for the Kyrion.

ATEME warrants your Kyrion against any defect in material and workmanship, under normal use, for the period designated on your warranty certificate. In the event this product is found to be defective within the warranty period, ATEME may, at its discretion, repair or replace the defective Kyrion. This warranty is void if:

� The Kyrion was operated/stored in abnormal use or maintenance conditions; � The Kyrion is repaired, modified or altered, unless such repair, modification or

Glossary

Packet A packet is the basic unit of data in a transport stream. It consists of a sync byte, whose value is 0x47, followed by three one-bit flags and a 13-bit PID. This is followed by a 4-bit continuity counter. Additional optional transport fields, as signalled in the optional adaptation field, may follow. The rest of the packet consists of payload. Packets are most often 188 bytes in length, but some transport streams consist of 204-byte packets which end in 16 bytes of Reed-Solomon error correction data. The 188-byte packet size was originally chosen for compatibility with ATM systems[1].

PID Each table or elementary stream in a transport stream is identified by a 13-bit PID. A demultiplexer extracts elementary streams from the transport stream in part by looking for packets identified by the same PID. In most applications, Time-division multiplexing will be used to decide how often a particular PID appears in the transport stream.

Programs Transport stream has a concept of programs, which are groups of one or more PIDs that are related to each other. For instance, a transport stream used in digital television might contain three programs, to represent three television channels. Suppose each channel consists of one video stream, one or two audio streams, and any necessary metadata. A receiver wishing to tune to a particular "channel" merely has to decode the payload of the PIDs associated with its program. It can discard the contents of all other PIDs. PAT PAT stands for Program Association Table. The PAT lists PIDs for all PMTs in the stream. Packets containing PAT information always have PID 0x0.

PMT Program Map Tables, or PMTs, contain information about programs. For each program, there is a PMT, with the PMT for each program appearing on its own PID. The PMTs describe which PIDs contain data relevant to the program. PMTs also provide metadata about the streams in their constituent PIDs. For example, if a program contains an MPEG-2 video stream, the PMT will list this PID, describe it as a video stream, and provide the type of video that it contains (in this case, MPEG-2). The PMT may also contain additional descriptors providing data about its constituent streams.

PCR To assist the decoder in presenting programs on time, at the right speed, and with synchronization, programs usually periodically provide a Program Clock Reference, or PCR, on one of the PIDs in the program.

Null packets Some transmission schemes, such as those in ATSC and DVB, impose strict constant bitrate requirements on the transport stream. In order to ensure that the stream maintains a constant bitrate, a Multiplexer may need to insert some additional packets. The PID 0x1FFF is reserved for this purpose. The payload of null packets may contain any data at all, and the receiver is expected to ignore its contents

MIB Management information basestems from the OSI/ISONetwork management model and is a type of database used to manage the devices in a communications network. It comprises a collection of objects in a (virtual) database used to manage entities (such as routers and switches) in a network. Objects in the MIB are defined using a subset of Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) called "Structure of Management Information Version 2 (SMIv2)" RFC 2578.The software that performs the parsing is an MIB compiler.

The database is hierarchical (tree structured) and entries are addressed through object identifiers. Internet documentation RFCs discuss MIBs, notably RFC 1155, "Structure and Identification of Management Information for TCP/IP based internets", and its two companions, RFC 1213, "Management Information Base for Network Management of TCP/IP-based internets", and RFC 1157, "A Simple Network Management Protocol". SNMP: SNMP, a communication protocol between management stations (consoles, for example) and managed objects, (such as routers, gateways, and switches) makes use of MIBs. Components controlled by the management console need a so-called SNMP agent -- a software module that can communicate with the SNMP manager. SNMP uses a specified set of commands and queries. An MIB should contain information on these commands and on the target objects (controllable entities or potential sources of status information) with a view to tuning the network transport to the current needs. Group of pictures (GOP) In MPEG video encoding, a group of pictures, or GOP, specifies the order in which intra-frames and inter-frames are arranged. The GOP is a group of successive pictures within an MPEG-coded film and/or video stream. Each MPEG-coded film and/or video stream consists of successive GOPs. From the MPEG pictures contained in it the visible frames are generated. A GOP can contain the following picture types: I-picture and/or I-Frame (English intra coded picture) reference picture, corresponds to a fixed image and is independent of other picture types. Each GOP begins with this type of picture. P-picture and/or P-Frame (English predictive coded picture) contains difference information from the preceding i or P-Frame. B-picture and/or B-Frame (English bidirectionally predictive coded pictures) contains difference information from the preceding and/or following i or P-Frame. D-picture and/or D-Frame (English DC direct coded picture) serves the fast advance. A GOP always begins with an I-Frame. Afterwards several P-Frames follow, in each case with some frames distance. In the remaining gaps are B-Frames. With the next I-Frame a new GOP begins. 3:2 pulldown The process of converting 24 frame/s material to 29.97 frame/s is known as 3:2 pulldown. The term “pulldown” comes from the mechanical process of “pulling” the film down to advance it from one frame to the next at a repetitive rate (nominally 24 fps). This is accomplished in two steps. The first step is to slow down the film motion by 1/1.001. This speed change is unnoticeable to the viewer, and makes the film travel at 23.976 frame/s.

The second step of the 3:2 pulldown is the 3:2 (or 2:3, see below) step. At 23.976 frame/s, there are four frames of film for every five frames of NTSC video: These four frames are “stretched” into five by exploiting the interlaced nature of NTSC video. For every NTSC frame, there are actually two complete images or fields, one for the odd-numbered lines of the image, and one for the even-numbered lines. There are, therefore, ten fields for every 4 film frames, and the telecine alternately places one film frame across two fields, the next across three, the next across two, and so on.

The cycle repeats itself completely after four film frames have been exposed. In the telecine cycle these are referred to as the A, B, C, and D frames:

Note that the pattern in this example is actually 2–3. A 3–2 pattern is identical to this except that it is shifted by one frame. For instance, starting with film frame B, followed by frame C, yields a 3–2 pattern (B-B-B-C-C). In other words, there is no difference between the two — it is only a matter of reference. The above method is a "classic" 3:2, which was used before frame buffers allowed for holding more than one frame. The preferred method for doing a 3:2, creates only one dirty frame in every 5, while this method has a slight bit more judder, it allows for easier up conversion, and a better overall compression when encoding. Display frame 1 and 2 for two fields each, and then frame 3 for three fields, and frame 4 for 3 fields. Honoring the original spatial placement of the fields. This results in Frame 4 of the new 5 frames being dirty.
