THE WASHINGTON TIMES WEDNESDAY JANUARY 1 1908 I i a = BILES TODAY Important Measures Relat- ing to Banks and Insur ance Coming Up ALBANY N Y Jan 1 With less than a dowrn members absent detained at home by Illness the IMst session of the Nw York State Legislature assem- bled today for what gives promise of being one of the most Important ses- sions in the history of the State Gray problems fraught with consequences to the people at large re to be threshed out and the legislation enacted as a result is to be most vital if the statements of the lenders are to be credited BarkIng reform and insurance are to be the two chief topics Remedial leg islatldn that will prevent the recurrence- of the recent financial smashes among Statesupervised banks and trust com- panies is certain of action while if certain influential leaders have their way certain of socalled insurance laws will be modified and their exac- tions so simplified that their provisions- can be properly enforced Next In importance will be the temp erance fight The last two years have witnfled loeal option contests that re- quired skillful manipulation on the part of certain leadrs to sidetrack the bills of the temperance advocates This years fight will eclipse all former rec ords Emboldened by the success of prohibition movement in the South the AntiSaloon League and its allied organizations are early on the ground Their extending the local option provision of the present State law to cities and making the unit of voting on proposition the election district and not the ward will be hard fought The first bill introduced provides- for direct nominations at the primaries Foley a Democrat intro- duced it This bill is a duplicate of one that failed last year It passed it will simplify the eiejtion machinery very much- It is stated that some kind of a bill along similar lines will be passed but whether the Foley measure will meet the views of the organization leaders re- mains to be seen NEW YORK Jan 1 Tho family Elvira Peseta a beautiful girl living at 154 East Ittth street received a letter from her a few hours after she had left the house Mating that she intended to commit suicide A general alarm was out by the police and her parents brothers and sisters are almost insane with anxiety- not knowing whether or not she car- ried out her threat Her brother Enrico Paeia said that his sister was nervous but that he of n0 reason she might have for suicide Her letter read To Alt tie Family Suicide Is cer- tainly a crime My feelings rebel such a thought but this is the only road open to oblivion and to the end this miserable existence of mine have suffered and I have sought com fcrt in prayer in vain In this last mo- ment my mind goes to the Supreme Maker of whom I implore forgiveness It is a treat sorrow that I Win cause you and I hope you will forgive me feel quite too weak to continue this struggle To My Mother Dear Mother I want you to under- stand ail believe that nothing else leads me to this step except that I am tired of life You know I am much too proud- in my scepticism of love for you to think any such thins causes me to do Miss Peseta according to her brother Is a talented musician and has consid- erable artistic ability She was edu cated in Italy and came to this country with her parents two brothers and a sister Miller Lectures Chicago Audience- On Too Much Talk CHICAGO Jan 1 Henry Miller came out of the character of Stephen Ghtant for three minutes at the Garrick Theater last night In that brief apace he told some of the Chicago society women what he thought of them A party in the center of the house to care more for their own con- versation than for Mr Millers acting Mr Miller didnt care for the conver- sation He only heard the buzz of it and not the words Some others had busy grip germs con- cealed About them and coughed and sneezed and Mr Miller did not like that either SQ had the curtain dropped and made a speech that wasnt- in Prof Moodys manuscript of The Great Divide Ladles he said as he came before the curtain as Henry Miller and not the actor Ladles if you will treat me with some respect I will continue If you continue to cough and talk the play will not go on I give you fair warning and without bowing the in- dignant Mr Miller went the scenes It was the shortest and one of the most effective curtain speeches Mr Mil- ler ever made The silence could have been felt thereafter Just to see if that degree of stillness had been achieved that would enable one to hear dropppd pin some one tried it Everybody lumped at the clatter When Mr Miller had had his say the curtain rose again and he went on with his lines When in New York Mr Miller stopped- in the middle of t speech to address himself to a box party literally scorch- ing himself to the noisy party WOMAN BADLY CUT Slashed about the head and nook by another woman Ellen TIbbs sixtyfive years old of Itll Carllns courth south- west was ALBANY N Y Jan 1 With lessthan a dowrn members absent detainedat home by Illness the IMst session ofthe Nw York State Legislature assem-bled today for what gives promise ofbeing one of the most Important ses-

sions in the history of the StateGray problems fraught with

consequences to the people atlarge re to be threshed out and thelegislation enacted as a result is to bemost vital if the statements of thelenders are to be credited

BarkIng reform and insurance are tobe the two chief topics Remedial legislatldn that will prevent the recurrence-of the recent financial smashes amongStatesupervised banks and trust com-panies is certain of action while ifcertain influential leaders have theirway certain of socalled insurancelaws will be modified and their exac-tions so simplified that their provisions-can be properly enforced

Next In importance will be the temperance fight The last two years havewitnfled loeal option contests that re-quired skillful manipulation on the partof certain leadrs to sidetrack the billsof the temperance advocates Thisyears fight will eclipse all former records Emboldened by the success of

Their extending the local optionprovision of the present State law tocities and making the unit of voting on

proposition the election district andnot the ward will be hard fought

The first bill introduced provides-for direct nominations at the primaries

Foley a Democrat intro-duced it This bill is a duplicate of onethat failed last year It passed it willsimplify the eiejtion machinery verymuch-

It is stated that some kind of a billalong similar lines will be passed butwhether the Foley measure will meetthe views of the organization leaders re-mains to be seen

Miller LecturesChicago Audience-

On Too Much Talk

CHICAGO Jan 1 Henry Millercame out of the character of StephenGhtant for three minutes at the GarrickTheater last night In that brief apacehe told some of the Chicago societywomen what he thought of them

A party in the center of the houseto care more for their own con-

versation than for Mr Millers actingMr Miller didnt care for the conver-sation He only heard the buzz of itand not the words

Some others had busy grip germs con-cealed About them and coughed andsneezed and Mr Miller did not likethat either SQ had the curtaindropped and made a speech that wasnt-in Prof Moodys manuscript of TheGreat Divide

Ladles he said as he came beforethe curtain as Henry Miller and notthe actor Ladles if you will treatme with some respect I will continueIf you continue to cough and talk theplay will not go on I give you fairwarning and without bowing the in-dignant Mr Miller went thescenes

It was the shortest and one of themost effective curtain speeches Mr Mil-ler ever made The silence could havebeen felt thereafter Just to see if thatdegree of stillness had been achievedthat would enable one to hear dropppdpin some one tried it Everybodylumped at the clatter

When Mr Miller had had his say thecurtain rose again and he went on withhis lines

When in New York Mr Miller stopped-in the middle of t speech to addresshimself to a box party literally scorch-ing himself to the noisy party
