MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Throughout its history, Laguna National Golf & Country Club has had a rich and proud

tradition of staging major national and international tournaments.

From the Singapore Open, Caltex Masters and The Championship at Laguna National to the World Cup Qualifying Tournament, Causeway Trophy and the Samsung Ladies Masters and Korean LPGA Tour Championship, the fairways of Laguna National’s Masters and Classic courses have frequently been graced by the world’s elite professional golfers.

In 2019, the Club’s two championship layouts have once more played host to significant events – this time high-profile amateur tournaments at which we may well have witnessed some of the initial, tentative steps of young hopefuls setting out on exciting paths that they hope will lead to fairway fame and fortune.

In May, the Masters Course was the venue for the inaugural Asia-Pacific Junior Amateur at which Malaysian Zubair Mohd Firdaus and Korean Jeong Ji-roo emerged as the Boys’ and Girls’ winners respectively.

Two months later it was the Classic Course that was in the spotlight when it staged the 72nd edition of the Singapore Open Amateur Championship, the first occasion this grand old, history-laden tournament had come to Laguna National.

Presented perfectly by Director of Agronomy Mark Isley and his team, the Classic Course received widespread praise … as did 15-year-old Denwit ‘David’ Boriboonsub.

Making up for the disappointment of finishing runner-up in the Asia-Pacific Junior Amateur, the Thai marked himself down as a star-in-the-making by landing the biggest

win of his fledgeling career. He’ll also take heart from the fact that among the many famous names inscribed on the Singapore Open Amateur Championship trophy are Thaworn Wiratchant (1987) and Thongchai Jaidee (1998), both of whom have gone on to enjoy illustrious careers among those who play-for-pay.

As you’ll also read within this latest issue of Laguna Lifestyle, Laguna National’s 2019 male and female Club Championship winners have been crowned. Adding to the excitement this year was the introduction of a 36-hole Senior Club Championship, another first for Laguna National.

We also celebrate the first anniversary of the Leadbetter Golf Academy (LGA). Located at Laguna Practice, under the stewardship of Stephen Moriarty the LGA has quickly established itself as one of the most popular learning centres in Singapore.

Not only do many Laguna National Members like to work on improving their games, but also they enjoy experiencing new golfing challenges around the region, and sometimes a little further afield.

In mid-November, a trip has been arranged to the Philippines where a six-day, five-night visit includes rounds at Splendido Taal Golf Club, Sherwood Hills Golf Club and Manila Southwoods Golf & Country Club (Legends and Masters courses).

That should whet the appetite for April, 2020, when, for the first time, Laguna National Members have the chance to head to Augusta National to watch the climax to the Masters Tournament and see the next champion fitted for his Green Jacket.

This exclusive golf experience is complemented by seven rounds of golf – three days at championship-calibre courses in the Atlanta area, three days at Pinehurst Resort (site of the 2024 US Open) and a final game at Tobacco Road.

As spaces are limited, those that are interested are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Truly, it promises to be the trip of a lifetime.

Festive Greetings from Management and Staff

at Laguna National

For the first time, Laguna National Members have the chance to head to Augusta National to watch the climax to the 2020 Masters Tournament and see the next champion fitted for his Green Jacket.

How many times have you cursed your misfortune when your ball has come to rest in a divot on the fairway or in footprints in the bunker? Or when an

unrepaired pitch mark on the green interferes with the line of your putt?

Finding yourself in such a situation is one of the greatest frustrations of playing golf. Yet it need not be that way.

If Members and guests took greater pride in caring for our courses then we’d all be a whole lot happier.

Indeed, Laguna National’s Director of Agnomoy Mark Isley and his dedicated team of greenkeepers and course managers are forever pulling out their hair at the lack of respect shown to the Masters and Classic courses by a considerable proportion of the people who get to play them.

Of course there are Members who go out of their way to contribute to the cause and consider it their duty to ensure that the course is in a better condition when they finish their round than it was when they started.

Yeo Teck Seng is one such person.

“I always say that if you take care of the course, then the course will take care of you,” said Yeo, who plays regularly at the Club with wife, Eesan Ng, and their 11-year-old son, Nigel.

Ever since Nigel began playing golf, Teck Seng has tried to instill a sense of pride in him about maintaining the Laguna National courses.

“I have tried to impress on him that everyone has a responsibility to look after our courses. It’s really the very least we should be doing. I think the message I have tried to pass onto Nigel is that you must lead by example.

“We are blessed at Laguna National to have two courses that are presented in pristine condition. It’s up to us to keep them that way.”

According to Yeo, showing such common courtesies as replacing divots, repairing pitch marks and raking bunkers should not slow down the pace of play.

Whether playing alongside family or friends, Yeo is conscious of helping out his flight-mates.

In the first article in a new series focusing on ‘care of our courses’, we turn the spotlight on a Laguna National Member who is instilling in his young son a sense of responsibility about maintaining the condition of the Club’s award-winning courses.

He said: “If one of them is in a bunker and is preparing to hit their shot, then I’ll try and get a rake ready for the sand to be smoothed over after the shot has been played.

“It’s not a tedious or time-consuming process ... and it helps to speed up play.” It also helps to make the game more enjoyable for everyone else on the course.

Isley said: “Thanks to Teck Seng, Nigel and all of our Members who contribute to making sure that the Masters and Classic courses at Laguna are always in the best condition possible.

“We greatly appreciate their efforts.”

Academy Anniversary Celebrations

The month of September marked the one-year anniversary since David Leadbetter unveiled

his unique brand of teaching at Singapore’s Laguna National Golf & Country Club.

Housed at Laguna National’s state-of-the-art Laguna Practice, the Leadbetter Golf Academy (LGA), a joint venture between Laguna National and the famed instructor, has proved an overwhelming success.

Indeed, from the moment we opened our doors for business we have felt overwhelming support from Laguna National and its Members.

Each and every day since we launched, we’ve been doing our best to assist our customers to become more accomplished players, fix those pesky slices, hooks, topped shots and duffs, and lose considerably fewer balls at the island green 17th hole of the Classic Course and the equally intimidating par-three 17th at the Masters Course!

Stephen Moriarty has been associated with the Leadbetter brand for more than 21 years, firstly as a student and then, for the last 14 years, as a coach. For the past year he has been based in Singapore as Academy Director at the Leadbetter Golf Academy at Laguna National Golf & Country Club. On the occasion of the first anniversary of the Academy, Moriarty reflects on the instant success of the acclaimed teaching facility.

I’m delighted to say that we’ve assembled a top-quality line-up of instructors at the Academy. Currently, our team is made up of Shinji Fukushima, Nigel Bark, David Bradshaw and myself.

During the course of our first year, for me it’s been a pleasure to watch the team develop their coaching skills and establish themselves as LGA coaches.

All members of the Leadbetter coaching team progress through an extensive certification programme. In September, we launched a new global platform called Leadbetter University to keep our coaches at the very forefront of the industry.

This will be delivered by David Leadbetter personally, as well as leading industry experts.

Furthermore, to help cater to the growing number of new golfers at the practice facility and offer greater access to students wanting to take on-course tuition, we’re in the process of looking to recruit a fifth coach before the year-end.

If you are yet to meet any of our team here in Singapore, please take the opportunity to sign up for Play with a Pro, the Club’s monthly initiative that allows you to play alongside a professional of your choice. Doing so is free for Laguna National Members and has provided a great opportunity for us to meet and play with so many Members already.

As has always been the case, the over-riding mission of our Academy is to help students along their golfing journey and assist them to find greater enjoyment in this sport that we love.

We’re proud to say that we’ve already enjoyed many success stories with LGA students winning competitions, improving their handicaps, and dramatically lowering personal best scores along the way.

One of the other key areas of our Academy is the junior programme which we've seen grow rapidly in these first 12 months. The LGA Kids Programme, the Advanced Junior Programme and the Junior Term Programme now cater to nearly 100 juniors.

We believe that nurturing golfers from a young age is an important part of our job here. So much so that in 2020 we’re planning to launch the Academy’s full-time programme to work with student-athletes by providing them with the most comprehensive programme in the region so that they can become tomorrow’s superstars.

As we go forth into our second year, I’m excited for the further enhancements to our coaching team, to see the continued progress of our existing students, and to meet new students looking to take up or improve their game. We’re also hopeful that during the year ahead we’ll receive a visit from David Leadbetter and be able to tie that in with an event for Members.

Prior to that, I’d like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported the Leadbetter Golf Academy at Laguna National. We very much look forward to helping you enjoy the beautiful game in 2020 … and for many more years to come.

Each and every day since we launched, we’ve been doing our best to assist our customers to become more accomplished players, fix those pesky slices, hooks, topped shots and duffs.

Two English football legends found time for a golf game at Laguna National during a recent stopover in Singapore.

More than two decades may have elapsed since they graced the hallowed turf

of Old Trafford and Anfield, but the names and deeds of Lee Sharpe and Paul Walsh remain etched in the memory of followers of English football. While Sharpe was a gifted member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering Manchester United squad of the mid-1990s, Walsh’s reputation as a goal poacher soared during a productive spell at Liverpool. These days, the duo are still delivering the goods – not only as pundits of the English Premier League, but also as keen golfers. “It’s great for us to be able to come and play at clubs like Laguna National,” said four-handicapper Sharpe, during a recent visit to Singapore with Masters Football Asia, an organisation for high-profile ex-footballers that aims to connect passionate fans with football greats.

“We’re fortunate to have the chance to play golf when we travel … and play gorgeous courses like this,” said Walsh, who plays to a handicap of 12. “I’ve always enjoyed coming to Laguna National,” he added, recalling an appearance at the club in the Caltex Masters Pro-Am alongside Spanish pro Ignacio Garrido. As a father of two young children, 48-year-old Sharpe’s golf-playing opportunities when at home are limited. “I played more golf when I was still playing football,” said Sharpe, admitting that he was among a group of Manchester United players who used to defy Sir Alex and head to the course after training, alongside Paul Ince, Gary Pallister and Paul Scholes, among others. Although he remains a United follower and fan, Sharpe, who won eight caps for England, does not believe his former team can challenge Manchester City and Liverpool for Premier League honours this season.

“City and Liverpool will again be fighting it out for the title,” said Sharpe, whose prediction was endorsed by Walsh. “At the moment, City and Liverpool are ahead of the rest. They both have exceptional managers and so much strength in depth in their squads,” said 56-year-old Walsh, a key player in Liverpool’s league and FA Cup-double winning team of 1985-86.

Sim Shows the Way for Laguna Staff

Some 30 members of staff were among a 65-strong field that participated in Laguna National’s 2019 Member-Staff Golf Day.

It did not take long for new staff member Benjamin Sim to stamp his mark at the Club.

Sim, who took up his position as Golf Relations Officer at Laguna National this year, displayed his golfing prowess with an impressive 39-point Stableford haul to top the standings in the Staff Handicap Division.

A low single-figure handicapper, Sim proved too strong for his rivals over the Classic Course, finishing two points in front of past winner Mamat (Muhammad Khalifah).

As well as a Handicap Division, there was a PC Division for Staff who are new to the game with pride of place going to Rajasekaran, who finished ahead of Sivanesan Venkatraman (Raman) and Lim Shi Wen over nine holes.

Using a System 36 format, David Rae took top spot among the Members with 39 points, edging out Mohd Majeed on a countback. Third place went to Chong Sek Sing with 38 points.

Benjamin Sim shows the style that took him to victory in the Staff Handicap Division.

“The Member-Staff Golf Day is a highlight on the calendar for many of our staff,” said Lionel Roberts, Laguna National’s Club Manager.

“Not only was it an opportunity for them to play on the Classic Course, but also a chance to mix with Members.

“Our thanks go to all the Members who supported this event, by taking part and by providing generous donations and prizes for the staff.”

Following the tournament, a prize-giving dinner was held at The Nest with a total of 60 staff in attendance. More than 50 lucky draw prizes were handed out.

Edina Szalkai and Desmond Kim etched their names into Laguna National’s history books with eye-catching performances to win the 2019 Club Championships for men and women respectively.

Their triumphs may have come in contrasting fashion, but the sense of accomplishment for both Desmond Kim and Edina Szalkai was

tangible.

In a nail-biting finale, Kim held his nerve to deny Bryan Lim a fifth Men’s Club Championship title with a brilliant birdie at the third hole of a topsy-turvy sudden-death play-off.

For her part, Szalkai was a model of consistency as she enjoyed a rather less stressful final-day passage en route to her first Ladies Club Championship crown.

Also in celebratory mood were Poh Yee Tiong (Men’s Intermediate Division winner) and Thomas Lim (Men’s Novice Division winner).

To cap a memorable event that attracted a record field of 67 Members, Jay Jhaveri and Sue Yap Soh Mooi created a notable slice of history by topping the standings in the Senior Championship categories. It was the first time Senior Divisions had been included, adding a new dimension to what is the highlight on the Club’s annual calendar.

Especially he struggled over the closing stretch in the opening two rounds, dropping four strokes over the last four holes to sign for an 80 in round one on the Masters Course. Similar late lapses meant he had to settle for a 76 over the Classic Course in the second round.

Heading into the final round over the Masters Course, Kim was tied at the top with Lim on 156 – three strokes in front of 2007 Club Championship winner Dustin Wilburn and promising youngster Jayaditya Saluja.

At the turn, Kim and Lim could still not be separated, both covering the front nine in two-over 38. Then the real drama began to unfold.

Lim ran-up a double-bogey six at 10 to hand the initiative to Kim. At the par-five 11th, though, Kim handed it back when he hooked his drive out of bounds en route to a triple-bogey eight.

Clearly rattled, Kim had further bogeys at 12 and 13 to trail Lim by three shots with five holes re m a i n i n g .

Mark Bates, Laguna National’s Director of Golf Operations, said: “Our thanks to all Members who participated and special congratulations to Desmond and Edina. Both are worthy and deserving Club champions.

“Two years ago we had less than 30 entries. We said then that it was our aim to build the prestige of the Club Championship. The fact that we had almost 70 entries this year is an encouraging sign – as was the response to the decision to add a Senior Championship Division for the men and ladies.”

Five years after claiming the Club Championship when aged 15, Kim made a welcome return to the winner’s circle.

Older and wiser he may be than when he lifted the trophy in 2014, but this success was all the more satisfying given that he’s spent the past two years in National Service, severely restricting his golfing.

“Golf has had to take a back seat,” said Kim, a former member of the National Development Squad.

Despite still striking the ball prodigious distances, Kim’s game, by his own admission, is somewhat rusty.

Now, Saluja was Lim’s closest pursuer, just one adrift.

It was the point of no return for Kim. “I had trouble finishing off my rounds on the first two days so I just told myself to keep my focus,” said Kim, who regained momentum with a testing 12-foot downhill birdie putt at 14.

The next twist came at the 15th, where Saluja’s birdie-four saw him rise to the top of the leaderboard alongside Lim while Kim trailed by two.

It was then Saluja’s turn to run into trouble, pulling his drive into the trees on 16. After reaching the green in three, he three-putted while his playing partners both made gutsy up-and-downs for par.

Despite salvaging a bogey at 17 after hitting his tee-shot into the hazard, Saluja’s bold bid for glory following an uncharacteristically error-strewn opening 86 was over.

But Kim was refusing to throw in the towel, holing a clutch 10-footer for an unlikely par save at 17 where Lim was unable to make a three after missing the green left.

A monster drive at 18 raised Kim’s hopes of erasing the one-stroke deficit, which he duly achieved courtesy of a sweetly-struck 15-foot right-to-left birdie putt on the home green.

That meant he matched Lim’s closing 77 and left the duo locked together on 233 after 54 holes.

Returning to the 18th for the play-off, the hole was twice halved in pars. At the third time of asking, it was Kim who prevailed after producing a timely masterstroke.

With 108 metres to the flag, Kim launched his 58-degree wedge high into the hazy sky. His ball landed 15 feet beyond the pin and spun back to within tap-in distance. When Lim’s 25-foot birdie attempt failed to drop, the contest was over.

“I didn’t make a single birdie in the last round while Desmond holed everything on those last few holes,” reflected a rueful Lim, who also lost out to Kim in the Club’s 36-hole Match Play Championship final in 2016.

While golf will remain an important part of Kim’s life, his primary focus for now is the lecture rooms at NUS where he will be studying accounting and business.

And what of his golfing future? “For now I’m going to be a social golfer. But I still want to play some competitive golf. You never quite know what the future holds.”

As was the case with the men, the final round of the Ladies Championship teed-off with two players in a share of the lead – Szalkai and Wendy Lim, both of whom were seeking their first title after finishing as runners-up in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

Setting out from the 10th, it was Szalkai who drew first blood with a birdie-two at the short 12th. Turning in 38, she extended her advantage to four shots with nine holes to play.

Szalkai then stuttered briefly as Lim cut the deficit to just one after 11 holes. From there, though, Szalkai reasserted her authority, covering the final seven holes in even-par to bound clear and add the Club Championship crown to the Ladies Match Play Championship title she won for the first time late last year.

Producing the round of his young life, Davian Tan captured his first Laguna National Golf & Country Club victory.

Competing in the Men’s Division ‘C’ category in the July Monthly Medal, the 13-year-old schoolboy surprised even himself as he carded a gross 87 from the White Tees on the Masters Course.

For Davian, who was playing off a handicap index of 22.3, that translated into a formidable nett score of 59 that none of his rivals came close to matching.

It was a fine effort from the teenager who had posted a gross 98 in the June Medal over the Masters Course and whose exceptional performance has seen his handicap index adjusted to 15.6 for a three-month period.

Davian, who took up the game when aged seven, is the brother of 16-year-old Darryl Tan, a two-handicapper who has represented Laguna National in league play and who won Best Nett in the Men’s Division ‘A’ in the June Medal.

As players are only eligible to win one prize, the award for the Best Gross in Men’s Division ‘C’ in July went to new member Gareth Phillips, who marked his maiden Laguna National Medal appearance with a round of 89.

In Men’s Division ‘A’, familiar names were to the fore in the stroke play format.

While former Laguna National Match Play champion David Rae fired a 78 (Best Gross), Matthew Pollard continued his excellent run of results by topping the Best Nett standings with a 70. He also won the prize for the Longest Drive with a 270-yard tee shot at the 15th hole.

As well as winning the February Medal, Pollard was runner-up in March, when he also won the Mercedes Trophy Qualifying Round.

In the Men’s Division ‘B’ section, top honours went to Brian Cook (Best Gross) and Shahid Sen (Best Nett), while Mayumi Ito (Best Gross) and Sharon Kong (Best Nett) became the seventh different winners in the Ladies Division this year.

Moving to the Classic Course for the August Monthly Medal, Ivy Song, Steve Eastman, Steve Burton and Duncan Martin were the outstanding performers.

Song underlined the steady improvement to her game since joining the club this year by amassing 42 Stableford points to edge out the ever-consistent Wendy Lim in the Ladies Division.

For good measure, Song also walked off with the prize for the Ladies’ Longest Drive thanks to a booming 233-yard strike on the 14th hole.

In the three Men’s Divisions, all of the winners bettered their handicaps.

With 39 points, Eastman finished two ahead of Aaron Warnke, who was also runner-up in Division ‘A’ in the May Medal.

In Division ‘B’, Burton’s 40-point haul gave him a commanding success from Thomas Khoo, while Martin’s tally of 47 points was four in front of second-placed Justin Ng in Division ‘C’.

Thai Teen Trumps Singapore Rivals

final round. Picture by Singapore Golf Association.

A slice of golfing history was made when Laguna National hosted the 2019 Singapore Open Amateur Championship, the first time since the event’s inauguration in 1948 that it had been held at the East Coast venue.

T hai teenager Denwit ‘David’ Boriboonsub had no hesitation in labelling Laguna National Golf & Country Club’s Classic Course as the toughest test

of golf he’s ever faced. “I’ve never seen a course quite like this,” said the 15-year-old student, who underlined his rapidly rising reputation with a wonderfully mature performance to emerge triumphant in the 72nd edition of the Singapore Open Amateur Championship. On a tense final day, Denwit maintained his composure to repel the twin Singapore challenges of Nicklaus Chiam and Low Wee Jin. With a closing one-under-par 71, Denwit posted a winning four-round aggregate of five-under 283. “What a course! It’s tough, long … and windy,” said the champion, who did not even enjoy the luxury of a full practice round, being restricted to 16 holes before darkness set in. “Before the first round, I didn’t think I’d have a chance of winning. I was thinking a top-five would be good,” admitted the teenager, who attends a Pattaya-based international school and who’s a member at Siam Country Club.

However, sticking rigidly to a safety-first gameplan, Denwit, who will not turn 16 until February, 2020, quickly worked his way to the top of the leaderboard thanks to an opening 68. A 74 on day two saw him drop back, but a two-under 70 in the third round was enough for him to regain his place at the summit. His plan was to try and drive the ball in the fairway and avoid trouble. He executed perfectly, grinding out pars and looking to the par-fives to pick up shots. “This is my first win in a big tournament,” said Denwit, for whom success was especially sweet given that he had narrowly missed out on winning the inaugural Asia-Pacific Junior Amateur over Laguna National’s Masters Course in May. On that occasion he had to settle for second place after bogeys on 16 and 17 allowed Malaysian Zubair Mohd Firdaus to overhaul him. Learning from that experience, Denwit remained calm down the stretch in the Singapore Open Amateur Championship in spite of the pressure being exerted by Chiam and Low. Holding a slender advantage, he kept his pursuers at bay with a solid par at 16 followed by a sweetly-struck eight-iron at 17 that came to rest safely on the island green.

It led to an eighth successive par and meant he could afford to bogey the 18th and still finish three strokes ahead of Low. Completing a good week for local players, former Southeast Asian Games team gold medallist Joshua Ho finished fourth individually. With his triumph, Denwit follows in the large footsteps of fellow-Thais Thaworn Wiratchant (1987) and Thongchai Jaidee (1998), whose Singapore Open Amateur Championship successes proved to be a springboard to decorated professional careers. On the back of his win, Denit rose to 805th in The R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking – a position he will have a chance to further improve upon when he returns to the Island Republic to line-up in the SMBC Singapore Open at Sentosa in January, one of the rewards for winning at Laguna National. Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Jerome Ng, the Singapore Golf Association’s General Manager, praised the host venue. “Our thanks go to Laguna National for staging the tournament and to Mark Isley (Director of Agronomy) and his team for presenting the Classic Course in such magnificent condition, great fairways and great greens,” said Ng.

T here’s nothing better than a natural, free-flowing golf swing. It sounds so simple, yet in reality it’s difficult for many of us to achieve.

So, how should you ‘feel’ a golf club when you swing? Think about it.

When you swing, which hand or which part of your body are you using to control the golf club? Is it your left arm or your right arm? Perhaps it’s your shoulder. Or maybe, you’re relying on your upper body. Or is it your lower body?

How can you judge the strength of the grip you should have on a golf club? In the latest exclusive instructional article for Laguna Lifestyle, Shinji Fukshima, an Instructor at the Leadbetter Golf Academy at Laguna National Golf & Country Club, explains.

With my students, I recommend for them to concentrate on the feeling of the index finger of their right hand (for right-handed players), from the beginning of the swing all the way through until the finish position.

You don’t have to use any power with this finger. But with a good, light grip, you should be able to feel it all the time. Once you can feel your index finger lightly on the club shaft, you’ll find that you can control the swing. Especially this applies to young children and ladies who don’t have enough power to swing fast.

TO ENCOURAGE THIS FEELING, TRY OUT THIS SIMPLE DRILL.

Having done that exercise with a ballpoint pen, now switch to a golf club, using both your hands. You’ll be amazed at the different feeling you’ll experience. You’ll find also that your club position will be better and you’ll be able to develop a more natural swing.

The Leadbetter Golf Academy (LGA) is housed at Laguna National’s state-of-the-art Laguna Practice, located at 610A Upper East Coast Road, 465404.

With my students, I recommend for them to concentrate on the feeling of the index finger of their right hand (for right-handed players), from the beginning of the swing all the way through until the finish position.

Over the past 18 years, Shinji Fukushima has been steadily growing a highly-successful client base in Singapore. Shinji had his first experience of the Leadbetter Academies in 1996, working with several of David Leadbetter’s senior coaches in Florida prior to turning professional. After competing in mini Tour events in America, he also had success on the Asian, Thai, Indian and Malaysian Tours. Through years of experience as a player, Shinji’s main concepts for his students are to keep the golf swing simple and natural, focusing on sound fundamentals and good basic movements. Now his career has completed a full circle as a member of the LGA coaching team at Laguna National.

Manila’s Prime Golfing RetreatsA group of Laguna National Members and guests will experience the delights of three of the Philippines’ best-known golfing venues when they embark on a ‘Manila Golf Retreat’ from November 12 –17. Ahead of their trip, Laguna Lifestyle reports on what the Singapore contingent can look forward to encountering at The Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club, Sherwood Hills Golf Club and Splendido Taal Golf & Country Club.

For more than a quarter-of-a-century, The Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club has been at the forefront of the golf club industry in the Philippines.

Located to the south of Manila, in the city of Carmona and lush province of Cavite, a 30-minute drive from the business district of Makati, the club features two Jack Nicklaus-designed ‘Signature Golf Courses’ – The Masters and The Legends. Spread over 140 hectares of former cane fields, they were the first golf courses in the Philippines to be sculpted by the Golden Bear. Opened in the early-1990s, the golf courses were the first of many constructed by the leader of golf course with gated community developments in the country – Fil-Estate Golf and Development Incorporated. The courses were scientifically designed with the environment in mind and have an extensive water capture conservation system.

The main clubhouse overlooks the 18th green, the 10th tee and the ninth island green of The Masters, while there is a separate clubhouse for The Legends that is generally used for corporate tournaments. While the surrounding property includes a 2,300-lot gated community with a Sports Club, shared by the club members and residents, both The Masters and The Legends were designed especially for championship tournament play. Indeed, throughout its history, Manila Southwoods has had a proud record of staging major national and international golfing events.

As well as hosting the Philippines Open on four occasions, the club was the venue for the Men’s World Amateur Team Championships for the Eisenhower Trophy in 1996 when an Australian quartet including David Gleeson and Jarrod Moseley claimed top honours ahead of Sweden and a Spanish team featuring a teenager by the name of Sergio Garcia. Singapore was represented by Douglas Tay Len Po, Jimmy Aw Eng Heow, Eugene Oei and Lam Chih Bing.

Manila Southwoods boasts two award-winning Jack Nicklaus-designed courses.

As professional and amateur visitors have discovered, both courses at Manila Southwoods have the distinctive Nicklaus angled greens and copious bunkers. Accuracy and distance control with approach shots are crucial. Arguably the premier championship course in the Philippines, The Masters is punctuated by multiple creek crossings and lakes. For its part, The Legends is accentuated by undulating mounds and dog-leg holes. Long-standing Chairman Bob Sobrepeña is especially proud of the club’s environmental stewardship efforts, dating back to 1999 when it became the first fully certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in Asia. He said: “Through the success of the Audubon programme at Southwoods, we have shown that prop erly-managed golf courses provide numerous benefits to the environment and the local communities. All golfers are encouraged to embrace the Manila Southwoods’ com mitment to the environment.” Splendido Taal Golf & Country Club

Sprawled on a 152-hectare man-made valley nestled amid the mountain ridges of the Grand Taal, with a dramatic view of the Taal Volcano and lake, this Greg Norman-designed course was opened in 2002.

Another Nicklaus Signature Course, Sherwood Hills is located in Trece Martires City in the heart of Cavite. Construction of the golf course started in early 1997 and was opened to members in August, 1998. The California mission-inspired clubhouse was inaugurated in October, 2000 and features a belfry and watch tower from where there’s a splendid panoramic view of the vast expanse of the nature-contoured golf course and residential development. G reat golfers have a seemingly uncanny ability to bounce back from making mistakes during a round, or from disappointing rounds in important

tournaments. Coincidence? Absolutely not. As Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Lexi Thompson and Ko Jin-young will all attest, being able to develop and maintain a positive approach to dealing with errors has played a large part in many of their respective successes. A Negative Approach to Mistakes

Coaches and caddies alike talk to me about the frustration they experience when watching their players make errors on the course, and then go on to psychologically beat themselves up. These players focus on the mistake, continue to talk about it on the 12th tee when the error occurred on the ninth green. These players become unfocused on what is important: the next shot. Negative and unproductive thoughts allow doubt to creep in, confidence can plummet, and performance deteriorates. As a result, players who respond to mistakes in negative ways seldom reach their full potential.

Bouncing Backfrom AdversityDeveloping and maintaining a positive approach to dealing with errors can play a major role in how you perform on the golf course. So says sports psychologist Dr Jay-Lee Nair in her latest contribution to Laguna Lifestyle.

Altering your body language or walk can be a highly effective way to reverse negative emotional reactions.

Bounce-Back Factor

A positive approach is first built on a foundation of acceptance that mistakes are inevitable and a realisation that the mistake is not permanent and can be changed or rectified. A positive approach to mistakes is NOT about being satisfied or accepting less than your best. It’s a productive approach where players realise golf is a game involving errors. Invariably, the winners are those players who bounce back quickly and consistently. The goal is to learn from the errors and move on. Developing a positive response to mistakes often requires more than just re-directing your attention and ‘forgetting about it’. To be truly effective in your attempts to bounce back, you must develop an action plan that includes both key thoughts and actions. Positive Response in Thought and Discussion

Refocus cues: First create a guiding attitude you want to live by as a player – an attitude that is based on adaptability and intensity when things aren’t going well, and does not accept quitting or feeling sorry for yourself. Then come up with one or two words that sum up this attitude for you as a mission statement, such as: ‘Stay Hungry’, ‘Never Quit’, or ‘Love the Battle’. Use these words as ‘Refocus Cues’ when you experience adversity on the course and stop the negative responses cascading out of control.

Productive self-talk and conversations with others: Review the type of conversation you have with yourself and with your caddie or coach when you make poor mistakes during a round. Some players can get more openly negative when they have someone there to complain to, such as their caddie or coach, compared to times when they are alone on the course. This type of action must be controlled. You have to practice discipline in what you choose to talk about. Your discussion can be reactive and maintain your focus in the past and on how frustrated you feel, or it can be proactive and focus on the ‘task at hand’. An effective approach to creating a proactive discussion is to ask yourself: ‘What is my plan for this next shot?’, ‘What do I need to do right here, right now?’ Think and do. When you focus your discussion with yourself and your caddie on the present moment you can rapidly regain control of your emotions and make more clear decisions.

Positive Responses in Action

Body language: Altering your body language or walk can be a highly effective way to reverse negative emotional reactions. Most players do not place enough weight on how powerful this type of action can be. For instance, if

you are the type of player who starts to rush your walk and looks down in thought after a few errors, this can translate to rushed pre-shot routines and fast swings. To reverse this chain-reaction, you might need to slow the pace of your walk, look up and out at the course, and stretch to reduce the tension you feel. Recognising the type of switch you need to create is an important step and everyone has slightly different needs.

Leave the error behind you: Following a frustrating three-putt or a really poor shot that has left you in trouble, most players walk on from these errors too quickly still carrying the mistake with them as they move to the next shot. Create an action that helps you to leave the mistake behind. For example, take a moment to visualise the shot you wanted to see, and then let it be. Make a commitment to placing your club back into your bag only after you have assessed why you made the error and are ready to move on. Do not place the club back into the bag until you can let it go. Plan Your Positive Approach to Mistakes

All of these strategies seem easy enough to do, but if you do not plan specifically the key thoughts and actions you will engage, they won’t suddenly take shape when adversity strikes, and your default reactions are likely to take over. Select at least ONE key thought and action as your ‘go to plan’, and then share it with your coach or caddie. Sharing your positive reaction plan will allow your supporters to provide feedback on how well you are responding in accordance with your plan, particularly the body language changes. Sharing the plan with others also enhances your accountability. In fact, we’re all better at following through with our plans when we know we are being monitored.

A positive approach is first built on a foundation of acceptance that mistakes are inevitable and a realisation that the mistake is not permanent and can be changed or rectified.

EXPANDING YOUR SHOT OPTIONS

Titleist’s U Series utility irons are available at Laguna National Golf & Country Club’s Pro Shop with special pricing for Members.

T he new Titleist U Series utility irons offer two unique models – U•500 and U•510 – designed to expand a player’s shot options at the top end of the bag.

Called ‘utility irons’ for a reason, the new U•500 and U•510 models produce more distance than a standard iron and less spin than a hybrid – delivering that one shot a golfer requires precisely when it’s needed.

In golf shops since August 30, Titleist says its U Series utilities combine forged L-face technology with extreme amounts of high-density tungsten ‘to deliver higher launch and faster ball speeds for game-changing long iron performance’.

• The U•500 is the player’s utility iron designed for superior shot making. The extremely versatile, low loft utility features a compact shape that delivers high launch with a soft landing and precise distance control.

• The U•510 provides hybrid-like performance in a forgiving, muscular iron shape. The high-launching, easier-playing utility offers a larger, wide-sole design for consistent shot-after-shot performance. U•510 creates such a powerful combination of distance, launch and forgiveness that Titleist engineers were able to create a 16-degree one-iron that is very playable from both the tee and turf.

Already the most played utility irons on the PGA Tour – and in the bags of Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth and Jimmy Walker – the new U Series utilities were prominently on display at July’s Open Championship, where U•500 and U•510 were the number one utility iron models in play.

“There are a lot of golfers out there who don’t want to play a hybrid, but are still searching for that kind of performance at the long end of their iron set,” said Josh Talge, Vice President, Titleist Golf Clubs. “They want to be able to launch it higher and farther, they want to be able to shape shots, they want to be able to land it close to the hole – they just want to do it with an iron in their hands. Everything that went into U•500 and U•510 was geared towards giving these golfers the performance, look and feel they’ve always hoped for in a long iron, and maybe didn’t think was possible.”

“U•500 is the incredibly versatile utility iron that Tour players have been asking us for,” said Marni Ines, Director of Iron Development, Titleist Golf Club R&D. Ines added: “It shares a similar size and shape to our prior generation T-MB iron, but has been completely reimagined to give players specialised long iron performance. It’s faster, launches higher, lands softer, and feels better through impact.”

• Titleist’s thinnest, forged SUP-10 L-Face Insert maximises ball speed for more distance.

• Player’s shape provides shot-shaping confidence at address.

United Nations Support for Open Water Initiative

The 148th edition of the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in County Antrim was not only notable for the victory of Shane Lowry or the fact that it was the first time in 68 years that the event was held in Northern Ireland.

T he 2019 Open Championship became one of the first major global sporting events to remove single-use plastic water bottles in a move supported by the United Nations.

The Open Water initiative was developed with Bluewater – the leading global innovator in drinking water solutions – to deliver a pioneering new approach to supplying drinking water at a major event by using water refilling stations and reusable stainless steel bottles to deliver pure fresh water directly to fans, players, staff and officials at The Open. The project was supported by UN Environment’s Clean Seas campaign and aimed to raise awareness of the issue of global marine plastic pollution and the need to protect the world’s oceans and coastlines, including the marine life that inhabits them. Daniel Cooney, Communication Deputy Director from UN Environment, said: “Sport offers a unique opportunity to engage with a global audience on environmental issues. We commend this initiative to tackle marine plastic pollution. The Open offers a powerful platform to influence how people think about drinking water and its associated impact on the natural environment.” More than 5,000 special edition reusable BPA-free stainless steel Bluewater water bottles were given to fans free of charge at The Open and were also on sale throughout the Royal Portrush venue at a special promotional price of less than five pounds. Furthermore, fans were encouraged to bring their own refillable water bottles to use at the championship.

All golfers playing in The Open received a personalised Players’ Edition stainless steel Bluewater water bottle with their name laser-engraved on it. A limited number of the Players’ Edition bottles were made available for sale in The Open Shop and at The Open Camping Village for fans wishing to purchase a special souvenir gift. Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said: “The Open has a close relationship with nature and the coastal system of the world’s finest links courses and it is important that we safeguard them for future generations. “We have all learned so much of the destructive impact of plastic in the world’s oceans and we believe we have to take steps to remove all single-use plastic water bottles from The Open in order to encourage fans and players to use alternative and more sustainable materials.” Anders Jacobson, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Blue, the impact-led investment company which owns Stockholm-based Bluewater, said: “We are honoured and delighted to be collaborating with The R&A on The Open Water project, which blazes a purposeful message of the key role world-class sporting organisations can play when it comes to leaving a cleaner planet for future generations. “Bluewater technology offers solutions enabling water to be purified and dispensed locally at point of consumption – with minimal waste – thereby eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles and their polluting transportation.” Life Water aluminium cans were also used as ready-sealed containers to provide water in some areas of the venue. The Life Water zero plastic cans are filled with natural British spring water, are made from 70% recycled aluminium, are 100% recyclable and BPA-free.

UN Environment launched Clean Seas (#CleanSeas) in February 2017, to engage governments, the general public and the private sector in the fight against marine plastic pollution. The campaign addresses the root-cause of marine litter by targeting the production and consumption of non-recoverable and single-use plastic. To do this effectively, citizens need to be aware, engaged and active in addressing the problem in their daily lives and beyond. Learn more at: https://www.cleanseas.org/

Glenfiddich Takes Centre Stage

Living up to its billing as the world’s best-selling single-malt whisky, Glenfiddich proved to be the star of the show at a special whisky dinner at The Nest.

Laguna National Golf & Country Club Members discovered the delights of Glenfiddich for

themselves when The Nest hosted a five-course dinner pairing with the award-winning single malt Scotch whisky.

The September 13 dinner was a sell-out with more than 40 Members and their guests in attendance.

Florence Rozario, Laguna National’s Restaurant Manager, said: “Once more the response from Members was outstanding. We always enjoy putting on special whisky-pairing dinners, especially when there is such strong support.

“Based on the excellent turnout and the positive feedback, we’ll certainly be looking at staging more events like this throughout 2020.”

The dinner commenced with Oyster Mornay followed by an appetiser of Foie Gras, Mushi Ebi Sushi and Sea Scallop and Home-made Seafood Bouillabaisse soup.

For the main course, diners were able to choose either Char-Grilled Kurobuta Belly with Mustard Sauce served with Sautéed Vegetables or Oven-Roasted Rack of Lamb with Mint Jelly served with Sautéed Vegetables.

Those with a sweet tooth then savoured the dessert of Home-made Tiramisu Mousse.

Each of the courses was paired with a Glenfiddich whisky, introduced by James Cordiner, Regional Brand Ambassador, The Balvenie (Southeast Asia).

In his role, Cordiner plays a leading hand in generating brand awareness of Glenfiddich.

Cordiner said: “Made with extraordinary care and attention, each Glenfiddich Single Malt is a work of perfection. Ranging from our signature 12-Year-Old expression to rare, vintage and limited edition bottles, our whisky is renowned worldwide for its quality and consistency.”

Made with extraordinary care and attention, each Glenfiddich Single Malt is a work of perfection.
