Thirteenth Sunday in
Ordinary Time
From the Pastor
In 1810, the Ursuline Sisters arrived in New Orleans and placed themselves under the patronage of Our Lady of Prompt Succor. Their devotion to Our Lady quickly spread to the Catholic faithful in the city. Two particular instances of Our Lady of Prompt Succor’s assistance occurred shortly after they arrived. In 1812 a fire was raging and descending upon New Orleans. The Ursuline Sisters prayed fervently to Our Lady and the City of New Orleans was spared.
In 1815, a vastly outnumbered United States Army engaged in the Battle of New Orleans against the British empire. Once again, the Ursuline Sisters invoked Our Lady of Prompt Succor, and the British Army was defeated. Our Lady of Prompt Succor is the patroness of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana.
You will notice an old portrait on an easel as your come into the main entrance of the church. Tom and Ellen Grote have offered to have it on display as we enter the Hurricane Season. You will notice that the portrait, in addition to showing the maternal protection of Our Lady for Her divine Son, also shows the fire of New Orleans subsiding and the U.S. Army winning on the battlefield.
Our Lady is invoked to bring quick assistance in the battles, natural disasters, and storms of our lives. May we invoke in a special way during this hurricane season.
“Our Lady of Prompt succor, you are most powerful against the enemy of our salvation. The divine promise of a Redeemer was announced right after the sin of our first parents; and you, through your Divine Son, crushed the serpent’s head.
Hasten then to our help and deliver us from the deceits of Satan. Intercede for us with Je-sus that we may always accept God’s graces and be found faithful to Him I our particular states in life.
As you once saved our beloved city from ravaging flames and our country from an invading army, have pity on us and obtain protection from hurricanes and all other disasters.
Our Lady of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us! Amen.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS!!
We give to the support of the church NOT because the church needs, but because WE NEED to give back to God a generous share of what He
has first given to us!
“The size of your giving is not measured by how much you give but by how much is left over after you give.”
St. Edmond Church is pleased to announce that we now offer Electronic giving as a way to automate your offertory donations. Electronic giving is con-
venient so that when travelling, illness or other circumstances pre-vent you from attending services, this program will allow your offerings to continue on an uninterrupted basis. To set up a recur-ring giving schedule, visit us online at www.st-edmond.org and locate the Online Giving button located on the Home Page. Also, you can use the QR code on the front of this bulletin on your smart phone! Prayer During Hurricane Season O God , Master of this passing world, hear the voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.
