Potentate’s MessagePotentate’s MessageDuring this unprecedented worldwide

health crisis, we are concerned about the health of our families, our fraternal family, our communities, our Shriners Hospitals patients’ families and staff, and of course, ourselves.

While the recommendations from the State of Nebraska and Douglas County Health Department are being relaxed, we still have recommendations and guidelines that we must follow. Currently and until at least September 15, 2020 there is a City Ordinance that requires us to wear masks. Anyone that is not sure of how this affects you and Tangier should take the time to read the City Ordinance. Social distancing is still highly recommended.

Our clubs and units can conduct meetings and we will be able to run some of our fundraisers. Please coordinate your fundraiser with our office.

Since CSSA was canceled Tangier will be hosting an announcement gathering on Saturday September 5th. Come out and join us as the individuals that are running for the elected Divan and Trustee positions announce.

Speaking of meetings and fundraisers there will be both a Stated meeting and Ladies meeting in September. Mark your calendar for the 10th. There will not be a dinner prior to the meetings. We are also going to be holding our Annual Spaghetti Feed on Sunday, September 20th. This year will be different as we will only be having the Spaghetti Feed as a drive thru. Additionally, there will be meat balls and cannoli for sale. Tell your friends and relatives.

Currently we have no parades scheduled and do not foresee that we will be participating in parades for 2020.

Be safe, take care of your health, our families, our fraternal family, our communities and follow the advice of our Federal and State authorities during these difficult times. Hopefully, we will get thought this soon and life as we knew it can get back to normal.

TANGIER “HOT SANDS”TANGIER “HOT SANDS”SEPTEMBER 2020SEPTEMBER 2020

ChantersBy: Bernie Hauber

With Captain Virgil Johnson’s blessing, the Chanters held a couple of mostly social meetings at Tangier in July and August. According to a recent press release from CDC, older adults and people with underlying medical conditions remain at increased risk for getting severely ill from COVID-19. Many of the Chanters fall into those categories. It is no surprise that some Chanters chose not to attend these meetings.

Because of the COVID-19 crisis, work on preparations for the 2020 Chanters’ Rib Feed was delayed. We have determined there are multiple hurdles and needed answers in order to have this fundraiser be successful. In a meeting in August, the Chanters decided to cancel this activity for 2020.

The act of singing may contribute to transmission of COVID-19, possibly through emission of aerosols during singing. Our director, Chris Work (who is also a public school music teacher), is still awaiting results and guidance from ongoing studies, i.e. examining aerosol rates produced by vocalists, and how quickly those aerosol rates accumulate in a space. Until such times our ability to perform is extremely limited.

When we meet again, there will be discussion about the “new normal” and its effect on possible cancellation of the 2020 Christmas Tour. Previous discussions included possible recording concerts for use in place of the Tour. If we find a way to perform, we will let you know.

The Chanters hope someday to restart their weekly meeting and practice schedule. As is noted in the listing of Units & Clubs, we practice Monday in the Main Room at the Shrine Center. We usually start practice promptly at 7:00 pm. Any noble with even a small interest in singing and a willingness to join us should contact any Chanter or send an email to the Shrine Center. That’s my update for September.

“As long as we live, there is never enough singing.” Martin Luther (16th-century German Cleric)

Boone & CrockettBy: Charlie Binge

It’s September. This has been a very different year. The parade season is nonexistent; the CSSA being canceled for Springfield Missouri, and the Shrine Center closing for three months, and just recently opening again. With that said, it was good to see the Boone & Crockett Club active again.

The B&C Club had a drive thru Fish Fry on July 25th. We did not serve as many meals as we had hoped, but it was a profitable fundraiser. I want to thank all the officers, members and ladies, along with the Divan, who helped with the preparation and serving of the meals. Well done on a very hot day.

The B&C Club Officers drew the winning Gun Raffle tickets on August 12th and congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all who purchased tickets for this annual fundraiser.

The B&C Club is a hunting and fishing club. We have various trips we take during the year for both fishing and hunting. The annual salmon fishing trip to Sheboygan, Wisconsin with eight fishermen will be leaving on August 30th and fishing on August 31st, September 1st, and 2nd. Our hunters are sharpening up their shooting eyes on clay targets and looking forward to migratory bird and upland game seasons. Our Big Game hunters are sighting in their rifles and anticipating the upcoming Deer, Elk, and Antelope seasons.

Our September business meeting will be held on Thursday, September 3rd. Bring a prospective member to the meeting/dinner to meet the brothers and see what the Boone & Crockett Club is all about.

THINK MEMBERSHIP - Bring a Blue Lodge member into the Shrine.

Legion of HonorBy: Jeremy Martin

September is here and before you know it the trees will start to change colors. The Legion of Honor decided to donate $500 to the Tangier general fund to help pay bills. We also have a new raffle ticket sale going on. There will be three prizes and only 200 tickets will be sold. First place will win a Pit Boss 1100 smoker/grill with cover and a meat package; second and third place will win meat packages. If you are interested, tickets are $20 apiece and your favorite LoH member should have them!

As of right now, there are two LoH members who will be going to DC for the IALOH convention and wreath laying in October. It is shaping up to be a good event. Please take care out there and if you would like to join LoH we meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm at the Shrine.

Daughters of the Nile

By: Queen Roxanne Mrasek

After reading my article from last month, I realize it is futile to try to predict what we will be doing. This crazy pandemic has a mind of its own and affects all of us differently.

Our August session was again a virtual business session with about 25 ladies. I love seeing all your smiling faces - especially those from Texas & Iowa we would miss if we were not virtual.

Unfortunately, like many Masonic gatherings, Supreme Session has been cancelled. I am hoping we will still have some form of virtual business session so we can elect a new Supreme Princess Badoura.

All planned fundraisers for August and September have been canceled, but there are some new ones planned. Watch your mail and your front yard for details!

A few years ago, we sold some luxury bed sheets and have found those sheets are wearing out. So once again we are selling sheets. There is a beautiful variety of colors and any size you need. They sell for $40 per set and we earn $10. Angie Larsen has all the details. If you are interested her phone number is 402-306-9057!

The next planned fundraiser is the Fall dinner in October. We have not yet determined the format for that event but will let you know as soon as possible.

Smile to end: I was watching an Australian cooking show and the audience clapped when the chef made meringue. I was surprised because Australians usually boo meringue.

By: Carl Simmons

August came and went and the virus continues to impact us. Life is a challenge. We are thankful for the fellowship we can continue to enjoy.

Our fireworks stand operated without any flooding thanks to a well-placed layout and a better tent. Sales exceeded expectations and for the majority of time we had a good turnout. Thanks to all who came out to help! A special thanks to the Provost Ladies – we couldn’t do it without your help.

Speaking of help, we are gearing up for our next big event, the Spaghetti Feed on September 20th. We expect this year’s drive-through will be busier than ever and we will need your help to keep the lines moving smoothly. We still need a few more nobles to reach our membership goals for 2020, so if you’ve been thinking about being a Provost, just contact a member and we can give you further information.

SEPTEMBER 2020SEPTEMBER 2020TANGIER “HOT SANDS”TANGIER “HOT SANDS”

Hospital FloatBy: Mike Donham

This pandemic has canceled many activities or caused activities to be rescheduled for Tangier Membership. Since fundraising activities have been canceled, donations for that project would be appreciated.

The Parades have all been canceled. Parades are a great way for Shriners to participate in local activities and make the public aware of the wonderful things we have available for the children in need. Hospital Float members, check those little cars now as it will be a long time until next May.

The Spaghetti Feed is still planned for September 20. Check the Hot Sands for times help is needed. Please volunteer to assist as possible. Many hands make light work!

Again, check the Hot Sands for Hamburger nights which are scheduled to return on October 7th. It will be great to be able to see everyone again. Just please remember social distancing and follow all CDC and local health department guidelines.

Thank you to the Divan for your continuous updates via email reminding the membership to be safe!

Again this year, Hospital Float will sell Holiday Greens. The deadline for ordering will be October 30. If you have ordered in the past, a Hospital Float member will contact you or feel free to contact any member of the unit.

The birthday and anniversary dates of Float members are being revised; watch the October Hot Sands issue for congratulations.

Again, please keep abreast of Tangier and Hospital Float activities in your Hot Sands.

Stay home, stay safe and wear a mask!

Women’s AuxiliaryBy: Jan Moore

Hi All. It’s been a while since I’ve talked with you. I hope that all of you are well and surviving this pandemic with as little stress as possible. We have been to North Carolina to see our kids and the plane ride was a trip in itself. We had to wear masks the entire flight. But enough about us.

Auxiliary will be meeting on September 9 at the Center in the usual spot. The decision to meet only once per month has been made due the fact that we do not have any projects to work on. The General Auxiliary has sent word that money for the wheelchair fund is the project that is of the utmost importance. Any money sent to the General Auxiliary will be used only for the wheelchair project.

We are still collecting aluminum tabs from cans. The can tabs can be beer, soda, soup, cat food, etc. The method to determine if the tab is made of aluminum is to use a magnet - if the tab sticks to the magnet, throw it out. Aluminum does NOT stick to a magnet. The Daniels and Moores took tabs to the recycler in May or June and collected $33.92. We have a new collection started and have more at the Center to sort, which we will do on September 9.

Since the start of the tab program in 2002 the following has happened: 2002 collected 1605 pounds of tabs sold for $642.42; 2019 collected 5181 pounds of tabs sold for $2318.88; total collected to date 65,251 pounds (about 32 tons) sold for $38,726.77. All of the money from the can tabs has been used for the wheelchair fund.

In addition to the can tabs, we would like to encourage you to think about memorials and honorariums to the wheelchair fund. What better way to remember someone, than to give to another. This money is considered a donation and can be used as a deduction on your taxes. If this is what you choose, the check should be made out to the Tangier Ladies Auxiliary and earmarked wheelchair fund, send it to the Center (please mark it to the attention of the Ladies Auxiliary). We will record it and send a check from Tangier Auxiliary to the General Auxiliary.

Greetings from the Shrine Bowl Unit. We hope everyone and their family has been staying well and we wish a quick recovery for those that don’t. A huge Thank You to Dean Abels and his Lady Judy for hosting this years SBU picnic at their home which was held on Sat Aug 22 where a good time was had by all. Dean and Judy were super in that they stepped up to host on very short notice as Rod Schake and his Lady Ruth who were all set to host had to cancel Friday. We do thank them for volunteering to host and hopefully it works for next year. Congrats to Bruce Arp and Jan Cade for winning this years annual SBU Ladder Golf Cup. Those two ran the gauntlet and easily beat all takers. Congrats to Bill German as he set an SBU record in that he was lucky enough to crash both Jenga games.

Unfortunately with the Big 10 Conference cancelling this year’s football season the unit has also decided to cancel our Big Red Prime Rib Dinners for this year as well. It wasn’t an easy decision and we are all really disappointed but feel with no NU games scheduled and the current disruptions it is the best decision. We definitely plan on hosting them next year and hopefully back to full capacity.

Our unit is scheduled to help serve at the Spaghetti Feed on Sep 20th and we have our usual shift from 3:00 – 7:00. Please come help if you can as it always a fun time and our help is needed. Our next unit meeting is Tuesday Sep 8th @ 7:00 and I hope to see you there. Stay safe and well.

Mobile NoblesBy: Jeff Blocklinger

Hey everybody. I hope everyone is doing well in these uncertain times. As everything is slowly opening back up and closing again and opening again, we are all just sitting on the edge of our seats waiting to hear if we can go to the lounge and see our friends. Remember though, we still have to be careful - I would hate to see anyone sick and hear that they may have gotten it from Tangier, but our Potentate and Divan are taking the necessary steps to prevent that from happening and we all say thank you.

It’s kind of a bummer about this year’s parade season but it has given us some time to make some improvements to 357 and the kids train. Some of the improvements we have been debating are replacing the carpet in the club car, painting the kids train, making the engine of the kids train look more like a train, and getting something for the trailer of the kids train advertising for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

With all the improvement that we discussed at our last meeting we still found some time to honor two of our members. There are two men that have made it their mission to keep 357 running and at its very best throughout the years from making sure that it gets its routine maintenance to replacing parts that most of us wouldn’t even think of. These two men have gone above and beyond and for that the Mobile Nobles have voted to grant Dan Waldon and Larry Drews lifetime members of the Mobile Nobles. So with that I wrap it up and ask that next time you see Dan or Larry please congratulate them and thank them for keeping 357 running.

What comes... Once in a minute, Twice in a moment,But never in 1000 years?

OSJUL20IO2N© 2020 SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN®

Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children® selects two National Patient Ambassadors to represent the health care system’s patients. The ambassadors spend the year sharing their stories of perseverance in the face of adversity and the ways Shriners Hospitals for Children has made a dramatic difference in their lives. Introducing our two new Ambassadors:

INTRODUCING OUR 2020-2021 NATIONAL PATIENT AMBASSADORS:

CONNORConnor, 14, was born with a bilateral incomplete cleft lip and complete cleft palate involving the hard and soft palate. As a newborn, his condition was so severe that he was even unable to create the suction needed to feed. By the time he was 3 weeks old, he was failing to gain weight and was about to be admitted to a hospital. That’s when Connor’s family learned about Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago.

There, his RN care coordinator gave his mother, Kelly, a special syringe, making it possible for her to finally feed her baby. And from that moment, Connor began an extensive treatment plan of surgeries and interventions that extends until he is 21, so that some repairs can be made after he has stopped growing.

Connor’s condition affects not only his teeth and his ability to eat, but also his speech, hearing, and social and emotional well-being. In addition, Connor has a connective tissue disorder that eventually made it difficult for the active teen to participate in contact sports.

Still, Connor’s can-do spirit and supportive family have helped him to find many ways to pursue his passions. Connor umpires for youth baseball, acts as a physical education mentor for other kids with disabilities at his school, and is an advocate and community volunteer. But most of all, Connor is a golfer. He maintains a busy training schedule and hopes to one day become a pro. And with his family, Connor is part of a large local annual fundraiser, a golf tournament that has over the years raised more than $200,000 for Shriners Hospitals for Children.

“I just want to use my time as a National Patient Ambassador to help other kids,” Connor said. “I want kids to know that no matter what they look like, or how they walk, or what makes them different – that they shouldn’t let anyone else make them feel bad. I want to help other kids feel good about themselves and their differences. I’m excited to make an impact on other Shriners kids’ lives and spread awareness about our amazing hospitals and Shriners.”

THE STORIES OF CONNOR AND MIACONNOR MIA

MIAMia, 16, was born with a severe case of infantile idiopathic scoliosis. Her journey with Shriners Hospitals for Children began when she was 2, when she was first seen at the St. Louis location. Mia’s treatments have included halo traction to gradually straighten and stretch her spine, as well as nearly 20 surgeries.

During her extensive time in the hospital, Mia and her care team developed a tight bond, and Mia considers the people she knows at Shriners Hospitals – her doctors, nurses, therapists, and even the security guard – family. She has served as a patient ambassador for Shriners Hospitals for Children — St Louis since she was 4 and has spoken to numerous audiences on behalf of the hospital. She has also appeared in promotional videos and media interviews. Mia’s passion is theater and singing, and she was featured singing I’ll Be Home for Christmas in our holiday commercials. Mia is also part of the Shriners children’s choir that performed in a recent recording of Foreigner’s hit song I Want to Know What Love Is.

“I am so honored to be in this position,” Mia said. “For as long as I can remember, I have always loved Shriners Hospitals. Not just because of the life it has given me, but the real love that comes from it. This community consists of the best people, and it truly makes my heart soar to know I’m a large part of it. It makes me proud to know that I will be giving back to a hospital that not only gave me a normal life but is a second home for myself and my family.”

We congratulate Connor and Mia, and thank them for their willingness to represent Shriners Hospitals for Children and share their stories.

“Let Us Show You How Home Remodeling is Supposed To Be”

Chad and Kory grew up Elkhorn in the 80’s riding big wheels together. Now they have traded in their big wheels for Black Carp’s Trucks and remodeling homes in the Omaha Metro Area.

Keeping homeowners happy, comfortable, and informed is an integral part of our business practices. We are a locally homegrown business that will be here for you when you need us and make your remodeling experience an enjoyable and affordable one that you will be able to enjoy for years to come. With Carp’s you get the advantages of a large one-stop shop with the customer service you might find at a smaller company. We started with one man and an idea of how, to do things the right way the first time around.

Our customers contact us when they want to deal with one company that can take care of all of their service and project needs.

We don’t profit by overcharging and getting cheap labor and moving on to the next project. We believe that it is vital to have homeowners involved in every step of the process.
