    It is pleasure to inform you that as per the O.M. regarding Swachhta Pakhwada for implementation of

    Swachh Bharat Mission, ENVIS Centre on Himalayan Ecology actively participated in Cleanliness

    drive of the host institute, GBPNIHESD. The Centre has actively participated in the followings related

    to Pakhwada:

    Day-1 Action Taken

    • Events were organized in G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment and Sustainable

    Development (GBPNIHESD) Kosi-Katarmal, Almora, from 9th

    -15th

    June 2017.

    • The Swachhta Pakhwada celebration was inaugurated by Dr. P.P. Dhyani, Director and ENVIS

    Coordinator, in the presence of Er. K. Kumar, Scientist-G, Dr. R.C. Prasad Chairmen of Swachhta

    Committee, other scientists, research scholars, technical and non-technical staffs of the institute. A

    total of 120 individuals participated in the event.

    • Total 200 kg waste materials were collected during the drive.

    • All participants took pledge to save the environment following the adoption of eco-friendly

    activities.

    • Campaigns in local dialects (Garhwali, Kumauni) were also conducted for creating awareness

    among staff, students, farmers, kids and public.

    • Interactions were also organized to spread the ideas about Swachh Bharath Mission.

    Day-2 Action Taken

    • The second day activities were started by Er. K. Kumar (Director in-charge) for the cleanliness

    drive.

    • The team of participants collected around 120 kg waste materials comprising of polythene,

    clothes, newspaper, etc.

    • The collected waste material was further segregated into the biodegradable and non-

    biodegradable. The biodegradable materials were disposed subsequently to make compost.

    Day-3 Action Taken • Er. K. Kumar, Scientist flagged off the third day activities at primary school of Katarmal village.

    Kits including Gloves, Broom, Begs, Trolley etc. were distributed during the events for waste

    collection. More than 200 individuals (including villagers and children) were participated in the

    event.

    • Smt. Kamla Bisht (Gram Pradhan) Katarmal appreciated the institute efforts and ensured future

    support. Further she thanked the institute for choosing Katarmal village for this important event.

    • Among others, social activists, workers and village representatives, viz Shri. Kesav Lal (Ward

    Member), Mr. Gopal Ram, Smt. Tara Bhandari, Smt. Geeta Devi (Angan Wadi activist) Smt.

    Shanti Devi (ASHA Facilitator) also made significant contribution during the event.

    • Nearly 300 kg of waste mainly, polythene, torn cloths, and non biodegradable material were

    collected.

    Day-4 Action Taken

    • The forth day activities were started at Himadri guest house of the Institute and the action taken for

    cleaning nearby areas of guest house and its surroundings, residential quarters of campus, and road

    side and around 80 family member of institute were actively participated during event.

    • The team member provided the awareness and demonstration for segregation of biodegradable and

    non biodegradable waste.

    Day- 5 Action

    • The concluding session of pakhwada started at the Rural Technology Complex of the Institute and

    chaired by Er. K. Kumar.

    • During the drive, nearly 120 kg polythene and other waste materials (cloth, glass, news paper, etc.)

    were removed from the river.

    • Er. K. Kumar -Scientist-G stressed the importance of Kosi River and importance of cleaning. Mr.

    Anand Sing Bisht, a villager from Kosi appreciated the initiative of the institute and wished that

    the event may improve the water supply quality to the town Almora. He expressed continuous

    and functional support to the institute.

    • In concluding session, a slogan competition in relation to ‘Clean Himalaya’ was also organized. A

    total of 14 entries were received related to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

    All events received publicity in electronic and print media as well. News updates of the cleaning

    activities were popularized by the newspaper Hindustan, Amar Ujala, Dainik Jagran, Shah Times, and

    Uttaranchal Deep etc. The day to day activities of the whole programme were regularly posted on the

    ENVIS website and Facebook page of the Centre.

    Himalayan Ecology

    ENVIS Centre on Himalayan Ecology at the G.B. Pant National Institute of

    Himalayan Environment and Sustainable Development (GBPNIHESD) was

    established in 1992-93 with the financial support from the Ministry of Environment,

    Forest & Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, New Delhi. The

    Centre is collecting, collating, compiling and building quantitative and qualitative

    databases of information related to various aspects of Himalayan Ecology. Through

    print/electronic media, the Centre is regularly disseminating all available information,

    free of cost, to various stakeholders/users, which include all District Information

    Centres (working in the Himalayan states of the country), ENVIS Centres of the

    MoEF&CC, Universities, Research Centers, Engineering Colleges, Govt. Institutions,

    NGOs and experts/individuals working in the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR). The

    main mandate of the Centre is to spread environmental awareness and help research

    and development in areas related to Himalayan Ecology.
