Great North Run. I would like to thank everyone for their support and spon-

sorship which motivated me to run the Great North Run, it was a truly exhilarating ex-

perience running with 57000 other runners all with their own stories as to why they had

chosen to run. My chosen charity was the Teesside Hospice Care Foundation, of which I

am privileged to be their chairman. Through the generosity of so many people I man-

aged to exceed my fundraising target of £300 and raised almost £1500 so thanks again.

The only problems I experienced on the run was Mo Farah getting under my feet and I

had to tell him to get a move on. I also finished up with badly sunburned shoulders

(fancy forgetting to apply sun block).

Congratulations to everyone else from our community who competed especially Laura

and Phil Tiplady

Brian Footit

St. Peter’s School, Elwick

What a lovely start we have had to the new academic year, the sun has been shining and

the children are really enjoying their new learning. In Early Years the children have

been working with their parents to make family trees. Year 1 and 2 had a trip to Raby

Castle which was really interesting. Year 3 and 4 started their new topic

‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’ by making cakes and treats, while the Year 5 and 6 class went

on a survival day out in Wynyard woods.

ELWICK LADIES FELLOWSHIP

A very pleasant afternoon was spent at the home of Pat Horsley. Margaret entertained

us with a list of superstitions and we have great fun discussing their origins.

We reminisced about the funny sayings our parents used to say to us when we were

children. Finally to keep our grey matter active we ended with a short but amusing

quiz.

Pat was thanked for her hospitality and the meeting closed with The Grace.

Next meeting: Monday 10th October at the home of Sally Reid, 12 Hampstead Gardens,

Hartlepool starting at 2.00pm

ELWICK VILLAGE ASSOCIATION (formerly EMA)

The AGM of EMA was held on Wednesday 31st August at “Holmlea”, Elwick and at-

tended by nine residents of the Village as well as the committee. The Chairman's and

Treasurer's reports were accepted and Committee and Officers proposed, seconded and

voted to remain as the previous year:

Louise Parks CHAIR Hilary Thompson SECRETARY

Roderick Thompson TREASURER

Margaret Ashton Tony Cook Sylvie Howe Margaret Smithson

A resolution to the AGM asked members to vote on a change of name to Elwick Village

Association, suggested by the results of a survey of residents of the Village after the last

AGM in 2015. This was carried.

It had been decided by the Committee not to hold the Summer Fete this year due to a lack

of manpower, but the Association will host the Children's Christmas Party as usual in De-

cember.

There was much discussion regarding the future of the Association and, in principle,

working with other village groups such as the Friends of Elwick School and the Parish

Council. The Queen's 90th birthday celebration event in June had shown what could be

achieved when Village groups combine their efforts for the benefit of all.

a convenient time to collect your shoe box.

If you would prefer to make a donation towards the cost of transport of the boxes to their

destination please contact me. On the leaflet it explains how to donate towards the ship-

ping or you can place money in envelope provided.

Thank you for your continued support.

Parking

This is a lovely village and we know that parking space is very limited, but El-wick Parish Council would respectfully remind residents that NO PARKING is allowed on the village green; this includes the green on BOTH sides of the Hartlepool road.

We would also ask residents to park anywhere in the village with consideration for other drivers and pedestrians, especially those in wheelchairs or with prams/buggies. In particular, parking on pavements where this means that pedestri-ans have to walk in the road to get round a vehicle, or where it means the road is narrowed making access difficult for other drivers and emergency vehicles, is not neighbourly and may be in breach of the law.

Please help us to keep the village a really nice place to live for all residents.

NEWS FROM SAINT MARY MAGDALENE.

We are delighted that our storm damaged buttress has been repaired. The

stonemasons from Classic Masonry have carried out the work sympathetically.

Mr C Morrow and Mr D Moore have pruned trees and shrubs in the church

yard; this work has resulted in a more open aspect for all visiting the church.

During the summer months many visitors have come to see and photograph

our wild flower meadow. Look on the notice board and in church to see a se-

lection of their work.

We have celebrated the first of our harvest services during the 3@ 4.

Other harvest celebrations are the Family services on October 2nd at 9 a.m. in

Elwick and in Hart at 11 o’clock. Also in Hart Church on Thursday 6th of Oc-

tober. at 6.30pm, Elwick and Hart churches will celebrate harvest, singing

some of our favourite hymns and festive readings, to be followed by a festive

meal. Please put this date in your diary.

We are proposing this autumn to send any money donated to the Leprosy Mis-

sion, a charity who supports families affected by the crippling disease of lep-

rosy. We would like to sponsor the gift of a donkey. All food donations will

be taken to the Hartlepool Food Bank.

Report for September 2016

As indicated in the July report the paper work for transferring the

responsibility of The Chare Wall was complete and earlier this

month the Chair John Littlefair and the clerk signed it off. The doc-

uments have yet to find their way to the clerk.

It was noted that the trees in Butts Lane which are striking high

vehicles and machinery have yet to be trimmed back. This exercise

is not as simple as trimming the hedge at your home. When these branches come down it

will be onto the road, hence it will be necessary to have it closed during the operation.

This will involve planning permission

Parish Councillor Keith Park is in negotiation with HBC roads officer regarding the 20

signs in Magdalene Drive. They seem to be unnecessary as the village is a 20 mph blanket

and there are reminders at the entrance to Butts Lane. On the subject of 20 mph; there was

discussion on the school run drivers and their untidy parking. This is a long drawn out af-

fair and when it comes down to it the responsibility is in the hands of the parents con-

cerned in the drop offs. All the pleas from the school goes over their heads.

There have been a number of complaints regarding the digging which took place to pro-

vide services to the new build behind The Raby Arms. The grass verges in Voltiguer Drive

have been left unseeded. The clerk has been instructed to write to Gentoo on the matter.

Blocked gullies continue to be brought to the attention of the PC. It is more likely the pipe-

work joining the gullies which is the biggest culprit. Cleaning out the gullies does not re-

move debris lying in the pipes and the PC are once more asking for these to be drilled out.

The tree hanging over from a garden in Back Mill View is now a health and safety issue.

The resident will be approached to sort it out.

The footpath from the Fens towards Clavering is still flooding and is in a serious condi-

tion. HBC are being approached to give attention to the problem. Gentoo and the develop-

ers of the land near to Sainsbury’s are supposedly using Section 106 funding to pay for the

work. HBC will be reminded of this at the next Parish Council Liaison Meeting.

The footbridge on ROW 6 which leads from Back Mill View on to The Chare is deep in

mud and HBC are being asked to clear this up. It is noted that the grass in this area is not

being cut properly if at all and to this end the PC are negotiating to have all the village

grass cut by our contractor who has kept the west end in such good order for many years.

It will result in another verbal battle with the finance officer at HBC, but reduce the cost to

them for grass cuts.

In the October meeting the PC will be discussing the budget for year end 5 April 2018 and

this will included not only the grass cutting mentioned above, put additional funding to-

wards planting those areas which HBC have stopped dealing with. The PC hope that, when

the circular troughs and those on the lamp posts are planted out, residents close by will be

willing to water them.

There was some dissatisfaction expressed on the quality of the wild flower displays this

year. Comment will be passed on.
