FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORDear residents and family members,

The purpose of this letter is to communicate information as it relates to the right for family members to organize a Family Council at Chandler Place.

While Family Councils may be structured differently, many councils seek to explore topics relating to elder care. The assisted living community is responsible for providing a meeting location for Family Council meetings. A team member liaison may be authorized by the Family Council to attend meetings and respond to written requests that result from meetings.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHTMarlys H. was born on Nov. 13, 1946, in North Minneapolis. She was raised by Henry and Florence. Marlys had one sister who was five years older than her. They enjoyed playing dolls and ice skating together. Marlys loved reading mysteries and classics as a child, and has kept the love of reading throughout her life.

Marlys attended Loring Elementary School and went on to graduate from Patrick Henry High School. If she had to choose a favorite subject it would be history. After she graduated, she spent two years at Minnesota School of Business studying data entry.

Marlys decided as a junior in high school she wanted to serve in the Army. As soon as she graduated, she enlisted and spent 20 years (1966–1986) in active service performing administrative duties. She was stationed in Germany for two different tours. Throughout the years she was able to travel to many destinations across the world: Alaska, Germany, England, Egypt, (where she rode a camel), Greece, Austria (she was able to go up on the mountain portrayed in “The Sound of Music”), Rome, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, the beaches of Normandy, Italy, and above the Arctic Circle.

Marlys is very active in community life at Chandler Place. She is a member of the Valiant Veterans® Club. She rarely misses an outing or an activity. She loves animals and can’t live without her favorite drink, root beer. She keeps herself busy volunteering at Chandler Place and Pearl Garden® and enjoys visiting with people. We are happy to know Marlys and thank her for her many years of service in the Army and the work she does volunteering in our community!

MONTESSORI MOMENTSPearls of Life® recognizes the value of each individual and helps residents live dignified, well-rounded lives, discovering the treasures, or pearls, within.

Montessori Principle #9: “I always go from simple to more complex when engaged.”

Nine Tips to Have a Great Visit:1. Introduce yourself and use their name.

Utilize name tags. Name tags are located on the visitor table upon enter to Pearl Garden®.

2. Plan a visit for the time of day when your loved one is at his or her best. Work with the care team to determine this time.

3. Prepare for your visit with reasonable expectations. Your time together may be different now, but it still can have meaning for you both. Our care team can assist you in finding meaningful activities to engage in during the visit.

4. Direct your focus to your loved one. Multitasking may add confusion and even frustration.

5. Be patient, flexible and present. Live in the moment.

6. Speak in a clear voice and utilize short sentences. This will help language to be understood.

7. Reminiscing with photos or small items can be an enjoyable way to share memories.

8. Avoid corrections. This can lead to stress and frustration.

9. Stay as long as you are comfortable. There is no set timeline for a visit. When you leave, let a care team member know. They can assist you with a successful goodbye.

SOARING® SPIRITSThe celebration of Christmas can be filled with happy memories, or it can be meaningless and maddening. Commercials tell us how we are expected to feel and what we should buy. Families are all tangled in their own set of emotions, yet want to make sure everyone around them is happy. Wow, I’m tired just writing that! Cards, billboards, movies and TV shows talk about “peace on earth,” but where can we find peace in the middle of all the confusion?

Maybe you could take a trip. Really, I mean it! Get comfortable and close your eyes. Imagine you are at your favorite place on earth. You are healthy. Money is not a concern and the temperature is just right. Keep your eyes closed. What do you hear? Birds, waves, or squirrels chasing each other? What do you feel? A breeze, the warmth of the sun on your face? What do you smell? Salt water, pine trees, flowers? Now, keeping your eyes closed, what do you see? Sunlight bouncing off water, an eagle flying by? And in this beautiful setting, you see a Christmas tree.

Soon you notice a new smell. Someone you love brought cookies. All of you nibble on the cookies and quietly enjoy the sights and sound of your trip, but you notice there are no presents under the tree. That’s because love cannot be wrapped or bound. It is free to be given and received all year long. Merry Christmas!
