at a glance

In a Nutshell Jesus wants us to love him, because only then will we do what he asks of us. This is truly keeping his commandments. We will be given an Advocate, the Spirit of truth, who will guide us and be with us always. Love will be the motivating force which will keep us close to Jesus. We will also share this love with others, sometimes without even knowing it.

Sixth Sunday of

Easter Year A

20/21 May 2017

We are not orphans. The life-giving Spirit is given to us in our baptism and confirmation and in the community of the Church. Without the life-giving Spirit there would be no Church—instead just a fading memory of someone who once lived among us, a good man who lived and died many years ago. But the one who died, rose again. He is the unconquered one and it is his Sprit that now animates his Church and all its members. It is by the power of that Spirit that we can lived lives of simple goodness, faithfulness and kindness to others, even when others are not kind to us. It is precisely in times of hardship and persecution that the strength of the Spirit is to be seen in our lives. Persecution does not only mean the oppression of religious believers. It means any kind of human oppression, be it sickness or human hostility. Family feuds, conflicts at work and arguments with friends and neighbors, all these are the daily tests of life where the unconquered Spirit of the Lord can be at work.

The Spirit is given to us precisely to overcome these everyday difficulties. When Gareth Malone was working with a group of war veterans he was shaken by the depth of suffering that they had endured. But even more powerful was the transformation of spirit that took place in all of them when they came together and listened to one another and allowed music to enter their souls. This is the work of the unconquerable Spirit of the living God.

At St Brigid’s This Week

We are anticipating the coming of the Holy Spirit this week. Jesus is preparing us—the Spirit won’t be sent until after the Ascension when we celebrate Pentecost. That is the celebration of memory: the fact is that the Spirit is already living and active and moving amongst us now in this community of faith in Coogee. Sometimes it takes a stranger such as myself to notice the ways in which people are caring for each other, problems are being faced, sufferers of all kinds are being comforted and the Spirit is active in the community. May God continue to bless all who are connected to St Brigid’s. We welcome Fr Phil back as he returns this week after a good holiday and he will be celebrating Mass at 9.30am and 6pm Masses. This Wednesday 24th May is Feast of Our Lady Help of Christians, patron of Australia Mass at 9.30am with St Brigid’s School leading the liturgy. In our parish hall, singing workshops will commence this Sunday 7.30pm - 8.30pm. Music is a language that we all understand intuitively. The act of singing releases endorphins, the brain’s “feel good” chemicals. Singing also has some of the same health benefits as exercise. No audition or previous experience, donations to St Brigid’s. RSVP email [email protected] or you can call Gina on 0424 185 774.

Statement from Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP regarding investigation into Cardinal Pell

Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP has written to all the Parishes regarding the investigation into the historic child abuse allegations against Cardinal George Pell. The Victorian Office of Public Prose-cutions has delivered its advice and the final decision now rests with the Victorian Police. Until the police make their decision we must wait and see. Justice must be left to run its course. The full transcript of the letter is available at the back of the Church and in the Parish Office.

Sacrament of First Communion The Sacrament of First Communion will be celebrated on the weekend of the 17th and 18th June. Rehearsals for First Communion will take place on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th of June.
