The Aswan /am is an embanment dam sit&ated across the ile1i#er in Aswan, Eg"pt3 ince the 4567s, the name commonl"

refers to the High /am, which is larger and newer than the Aswan

%ow /am, which was first completed in 45783 2ollowing Eg"pt's

independence from the 9nited Kingdom, the High /am was

constr&cted between 45:7 and 45;73 It aimed to increase

economic prod&ction b" f&rther reg&lating the ann&al ri#er

flooding and pro#iding storage of water for agric&lt&re, and later,

to generate h"droelectricit"3 The dam has had a significant impact

on the econom" and c&lt&re of Eg"pt3

efore the dams were b&ilt, the 1i#er ile flooded each "ear

d&ring late s&mmer, as water flowed down the #alle" from its

East African drainage basin3 These floods bro&ght high water and

nat&ral n&trients and minerals that ann&all" enriched the fertile

soil along the floodplain and delta< this made the ile #alle" ideal

for farming since ancient times3 eca&se floods #ar", in high-

water "ears, the whole crop might be wiped o&t, while in low-water "ears widespread dro&ght and famine occasionall"

occ&rred3 As Eg"pt's pop&lation grew and conditions changed,

both a desire and abilit" de#eloped to control the floods, and th&s

both protect and s&pport farmland and the economicall"

important cotton crop3 =ith the reser#oir storage pro#ided b"

these dams, the floods co&ld be lessened, and the water co&ld be

stored for later release3
