Wearing throwback uniforms that included the old Yosef logo on their helmets, the Appalachian State Mountaineers crushed Coastal Carolina 55-14 last Saturday. At left, Steven Miller weaves his way through traffi c during the second quarter. At bot-tom right, Mountaineers defensive tackle Stephen Burns gets ready to hit Coastal quarterback Aramis Hillary. At bottom left, ASU receiver Tony Washington picks up some yardage after making a catch. The Mountaineers host Elon today in a home-coming showdown of Southern Conference rivals. This is a very special homecoming since this is also the 50th anniversary year of the construction of Kidd Brewer Stadium, which was known as Conrad Stadium when it was constructed in 1962.

I had a few moments to catch up with Kidd Brewer Stadium, which is also known as “The Rock,” following practice this week.

Steve Behr: First of all, should I call you The Kidd, or Kidd Brewer, or The Rock?

Kidd Brewer Stadium: Any of the three is acceptable, but since management put a big rock near the ticket offi ce, The Rock works fi ne for me.

SB: You’ve become an institution here at Appalachian State. Did you ever imagine the campus, the enrollment and the football program would grow the way they have?

KBS: So many things have changed. I was originally constructed with 10,000 perma-nent seats, and was named after former university trustee William J. Conrad.

I was also the fi rst stadium in either North or South Carolina to install artifi cial turf. ASU played Elon on Oct. 3, 1970. I got a name change to Kidd Brewer Stadium in 1988 in honor of coach Kidd Brewer, who went 35-5-3 as coach from 1935-38.

I was renovated in 1995 by 6,650 seats, and again in 2008 to raise capacity to 24,050. I’ve sent three teams to Division I-AA/Football Championship Subdivision games in 2005-07 and all have returned with national championships.

I’ve also got 18 luxury suits, 500 club seats and state-of-the-art training and locker facilities.

SB: People seem to like you. You’ve been over capacity the last 40 games.

KBS: Not bad for a middle-aged stadium, eh? I’ve averaged as high as 29,449 fans in 2010 and 28,727 in 2008. A total of 30,931 joined me on Halloween 2008 to watch the Mountaineers crush Wofford 70-24 on ESPN2. And that was just the second-largest crowd to visit me. The largest crowd, 31,531, saw the Mountaineers beat Elon 34-31 in 2010. I’ve had seven crowds of over 30,000 guests.

Ironically, I was also the site for the sec-ond college football game ever televised by ESPN. Appalachian State played Western Carolina for the Old Mountain Jug in 1979.

SB: Speaking of Elon, they return for today’s game. Any memories?

KBS: They’re a little fuzzy before 2003 when Elon joined the Southern Conference since the teams didn’t play each other at ASU between 2003 and 1970. ASU won that 1970 game 14-10. The last time Elon even won here was when I was known as Conrad Stadium, which was 1964. It’s the only time Elon, then known as the Fighting Chris-tians, has won a game on my lawn.

SB: Any special memories in general?KBS: The fi rst game I hosted was a down-

er, a 6-3 loss to Emory & Henry. The next

home game was a 27-12 win over Elon. The fi rst homecoming game at Conrad Stadium ended in a 21-21 tie with Catawba on Oct. 13, 1962. The Mountaineers were 2-1-1 at home that season under coach Jim Duncan.

The time ASU beat No. 1-ranked Marshall 24-14 in 1994 was one to remember. It was the fi rst time ASU ever beat a No. 1-ranked team. ASU also beat No. 1-ranked Georgia Southern 17-16 in 1999.

And who could ever forget the “Miracle on the Mountain,” a 16-15 win over Furman in 2002? My guests nearly lost their minds when Josh Jeffries intercepted a two-point conversion pass from Billy Napier, lateraled it to Derrick Black, who returned it for a defensive two-point conversion with seven seconds left in the game. That one made the

top play of the day on ESPN.SB: Any thoughts on the best players to

play here?KBS: There have been so many All-Amer-

icans and so many who have gone on to the National Football League, but there are four who stand out. Defensively, nobody hit harder than linebacker Dexter Coakley, but linebacker Dino Hackett is a close second.

Offensively, quarterback Armanti Ed-wards had a “wow” factor, as ASU radio an-nouncer David Jackson correctly said, that few who played at this site, could match. Running back John Settle was also a special player to watch.

SB: Thank you for your time, Rock.KBS: My pleasure. By the way, welcome

back alumni.
