The Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Today marks the 182nd anniversary of the founding, in Paris, of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul by Blessed Frederic Ozanam. At the age of 20 Frederic’s heart wept for the poor of Paris. Inspired by our Blessed Mother and St. Vincent, and in collaboration with a Daughter of Charity, Blessed Rosalie Rendu, Frederic started the first conference. Our own Vincentians of Assumption Parish now walk in the footsteps of these founders, meeting the needs of the poor in our midst, becoming companions on the journey with them, seeing Christ in them and deep-ening their own relationship with Jesus and Mary through direct service to the poor. Our Vincentians are our clearest means of encountering the poor in our community, of bringing Christ to the ends of the earth within the very boundaries of our parish. While we may not be members of our parish conference, it is necessary for us to participate in this vital dimension of our parish mission; honoring the legacy of St. Vincent de Paul who looks out us in every gathering and commending ourselves to Mary, our Mother. We can support this important ministry by using our St. Vincent de Paul envelopes or leaving a contribution in the “poor box” near the statue of St. Vincent (perhaps offering a prayer to him as you pass by). We can also bring non-perishable food items to the alcove by the elevator to be picked up by members of our conference. In these days leading up to Thanksgiving and throughout the holidays, the need is great. There is an extra truck in the parking lot for your non-perishable items at this critical time. Baptismal Preparation Class All parents are required to partici-pate in a class of Pre-Baptismal in-struction before having their child/children baptized at Assumption. There are many who serve behind the scenes, praying for those here in our community and far beyond. The Prayer Tree volunteers lend their time and compassionate hearts to consider the need of others and then pause their days to intercede before our loving and merciful God.

“I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they all contrib-uted out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in every-thing she had, her whole liv-ing.” (Mark 12:43-44) Jesus gets right to the point – we are all called to give money to support the mission of the Church, regardless of our circumstance. No gift is too small or insignificant! Giving mon-ey to support the mission of our lo-cal parish is a matter of our faith, just like praying and participating in parish ministries. When you make a financial offering, is it from your “first fruits” or from what is “left over”?

Life Peace Justice Everyone Can Take Action My name is Denise Brock. My fam-ily and I have been Assumption parishioners since 2006. I am em-

ployed with the Centers for Disease Control & Preven-tion (CDC). Years before I was born, my parents, Chris & Evelyn Davis were employed by Mallinckrodt Chemi-cal Works in St. Louis, Missouri. Both have since passed away; my father at the young age of 52 from lung cancer and leukemia, my mother from heart disease & colon cancer. Part of my role as an Ombudsman for the CDC is to as-sist former workers (or their surviving family members) & sometimes even current workers, in obtaining compen-sation for illnesses (even death) due to their employment in the nation’s nuclear weapons industry. The compensa-tion stems from legislation passed in 2000 called the En-ergy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Pro-gram Act (EEOICPA). To date, over 11.5 billion dollars has been paid out nationwide. This is tax –free compen-sation. Workers who are living & have been approved are also eligible for medical coverage, including up to 24 hour in home care paid for in full by the Department of Labor. There are 379 facilities across the United States that were involved in this type of work. Mallinckrodt had three fa-cilities in Missouri; one in St. Louis, one in Weldon Spring, & one in Hematite. The St. Louis airport, Latty Avenue in Hazelwood, Tyson Valley Powder Farm and West Lake Landfill are all dump sites from the radioac-tive tailings & waste that was left behind. (Many of you may have noticed news coverage mentioning an under-ground fire heading towards radioactive waste stored in West Lake Landfill. The radioactive tailings came from uranium processing at the St. Louis Mallinckrodt site for the Manhattan Project.) My mother was the first recipient of this compensation for the Mallinckrodt employees. She was awarded $150,000 for my father’s cancer, $125,000 for his death & another $50,000 for wage loss. If you or anyone you know worked at Mallinckrodt (or any of the other 370 plus) facilities, PLEASE call The Atomic Resource Coa-lition (ARC) 636-238-4505. There is no cost to file, it is not a law suit, nor does it require an attorney. We have other parishioners who have also been recipients of the compensation. We can provide you with a list of the other facilities upon request. ARC is a nonprofit agency and will assist you free of charge. I would also like to ask that as many as possible come to

see a documentary “The Safe Side of the Fence” which stars a few of our parishioners. The film won “best docu-mentary” & “best director” in the St. Louis film festival and sold out in July at the Tivoli Theatre. It is now show-ing across the nation, it is in the International Film Festi-val, & may be nominated for an academy award. Below is a synopsis of the film. Today's nuclear industry was born in secrecy during World War II, as America searched for a way to create the world's first self-sustained nuclear chain reaction -- a process that would culminate in the creation of the world's most powerful bombs. Code-named the Manhat-tan Project, the mission first needed to identify a source capable of refining massive amounts of uranium. Edward Mallinckrodt Jr., who ran a small chemical company in St. Louis, agreed to take on the job.�As a result, Mallinckrodt’s employees became some of the most con-taminated nuclear workers in history, and the city of St. Louis was left to deal with the considerable fallout that resulted from the company’s creation of the world's first nuclear waste. Seventy years later, the city’s nuclear lega-cy continues to have damaging effects, and the steps re-quired to keep workers and the public safe from these dangerous materials presents a seemingly never-ending challenge. The Film gives an account of real lives; real people and families that span decades and generations. In that, and also by focusing on the relationship between several sites, the viewer is led on a journey of ever deepening and in-cremental realization regarding a very complex web of interconnectedness between facilities involved, from the inception of the Manhattan Project to present day. A Time of Need A sad incident occurred at Sr Thea Bowman School in East St. Louis, the only Catholic School in that area. The school was vandalized. The 8th grade students here at Assumption Elementary School want to help replenish materials at the school so that the students can continue with their Catholic education and evangelization. The 8th grade students have decided to hold a fundraiser to sell candy bars at dismissal for $1.00 each on November 13, 20 and 24. Assumption School wants to do this because it shows kids helping kids and students helping students.

Sr Thea Bowman was always singing about her faith and was constantly joyful. She became a Catholic on her own and felt God’s call to join the religious life.

“I think the difference between me and some people is that I’m content to do a little. Sometimes people think they have to do big things in order to make change. But if each one would light a candle, we’d have a tremendous light.” Sr Thea Bowman

As 8th graders here at Assumption, we are not able to do big things, but we can do little things to help out. This is one way we can help. Please pray for us in our endeavor as we look to help our sis-ters and brothers in our Catholic faith.

Pope Francis recently announced that from Decem-ber 8 this year right through to November 20, 2016 the Vatican will be celebrating a special jubilee in the form of a global holy year of mercy.

The pope has symbolically called on the entire global Roman Catholic Church to

reflect his message of compassion and pardon.

Pope Francis said that mercy is “The beating heart of the Gospel”.

The letter, published by the Vatican in seven languages, is striking for the global scope the pontiff envisions the Ju-bilee year taking, with availability for pardon and mercy seemingly available to all.

Archbishop Carlson stated, “As we journey together and prepare for the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, may we recognize that we are strangers no longer and seek to bring to light God’s mercy: “It is time to return to the ba-sics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Mercy is the force that reawakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope” (Misericordiae Vultus, 10).

Remembering Our Veterans Lord Jesus, With gratitude, we honor all veterans who have served their fellow Americans. We ask your blessings for them. In sorrow, we honor the more than 6,800 men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces who have recently died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In sorrow, we acknowledge the horror and destruction of war. We ask your for-giveness for our failure to be peacemakers.

Let us Pray We pray for all the victims of war, all chil-dren of God: We pray for mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, daughters, and sons in the U.S. who mourn the deaths of loved ones. Comfort them, O Lord.

We pray for U.S. soldiers who are returning home emotionally and physically trauma-tized by this war. Comfort them, O Lord.

We pray for U.S. soldiers who are still in Afghanistan and all parts of the world. Pro-tect them, keep them safe, and bring them home soon. Comfort them, O Lord.

We pray for civilians who live with daily terror and destruction. Comfort them, O Lord.

We pray for our leaders: give them wisdom and discernment to bring life and peace where there is death and conflict. Guide them, O Lord.

With great sadness, we remember all those who served and gave their lives or their health and well-being in the Armed Forces; we pray for the dead, that their souls rest in peace, and we pray for healing for all those wounded in some way during conflict. May we resolve to work for peace in their memory.
