1. TECHNICAL BREAKDOWN

Who are we ? Yves Carrere and Guillaume Facques, 21 and 23 years old.

Our project ? To travel 3,300 km (2063 miles) across Asia.

How ? On a tandem.

For what purpose ? To sponsor children in the countries travel through. To create a bond between French and Asian schoolchildren.

Contact means ? Media coverage, before, during and after our project. Photographs, diary and video. Creation of a website: www.solidasport.com.

When ? July-August 2010.

What budget ? 9905 €.

2. THE PROJECT ITSELF

From a dream to reality : Everyone has wishes, dreams and desires : a seaside villa, a boat, a car…… For

both of us the dream meant something completely different : a journey. And not just any journey. One in

which we could give of ourselves from beginning to end, one in which we could take ourselves to different

lands and change ourselves forever and one which would help bring a smile to the faces of children. A

project was born and to accompany us on this journey we decided to ride a tandem!

Why a tandem ? Because of its originality, the relationship that is created between the two riders,

confidence, effort, changing of rhythm and dialogue. But also because of our shared love of adventure and

the contact with the peoples we would meet: taking the time to discover, to observe, to understand and to

appreciate our journey.

As with Rome, which wasn’t built in a day, we are faced with the difficulties complicit in this project set for

next summer. We are both uninitiated in this type of journey : on a tandem, we are ready to make

sacrifices, train physically for a year, leave our loved ones and live away from our natural comfort zone and

to face all sorts of unforeseen physical, moral and administrative difficulties. There will be problems and

feelings of emptiness but more importantly there will be moments of joy, unforgettable friendships and the

discovery of cultures and values so different from our own. With all that this project represents for us today

we feel ready to undertake it, to achieve it and to prove to ourselves and to others that adventure is within

the reach of everyone.

Why are we doing this? Once again to prove that it is possible to improve the standard and quality of life of

people who need it and cannot do it on their own. To see the smile on the faces of children and parents

when they are told that a well will be built in their village, that the money earned by means of sponsored

kilometers will allow a little Vietnamese or Cambodian child to go to school…

Money doesn’t bring happiness but it certainly helps. That is why we need help from the outside. Once our

internet side has been set up, we will be looking for sponsors both in terms of supplies and finance. This

presentation and our internet site show you our dream and prove of our sincerity and motivation.

2. OUR TANDEM

The story

It was a summer’s day when we found him on a small internet advertising board (due to a small budget) and

we immediately fell in love. A few days later we left for Aix-les-Bains in order to collect the new companion

kilos (50lbs) and measures 2m, 30cm (118 ft). Pampered, cherished and cared for, for many years by his

owner, the latter had tears in his eyes when he chose to part with him. Although he looks like new, our

1. TO CROSS SOUTHERN ASIA ON A TANDEM

Through using the strength of our legs:

We are going to cycle for two months covering 3000 kilometers (2063 miles). We shall cover 55

kilometers (35 miles) a day. For us, this is a true sporting challenge that we wish to accomplish.

Truly motivated, we will find the energy and determination required to reach our destination on

time.

Through meeting local People:

When on a bicycle there are no obstacles to communication. Meeting local people is made easier.

The arrival of strangers in small villages arouses curiosity; our arrival on a tandem will no doubt

cause an element of surprise thereby helping in our initial contacts.

We wish to gather witness accounts and to understand the way of life and to share with them one

of the most precious gifts of mankind, hospitality.

Ultimately, our water, food and housing requirements will require a constant contact with the

people and a call on their hospitality.

Through seeing the world:

Our efforts will be rewarded in traveling through sumptuous landscapes and seeing many

extraordinary places.

Through learning about oneself:

This process happens by surpassing oneself. During this journey we will constantly be confronted by

bad weather, different landscapes and daily challenges. Our only response to all this will be our

motivation, our desire to go forward by using the strength of our legs.

Page 7: Association Solidasport : Presenting portfolio

7

2. TO COME TO THE AID OF CHILDREN IN THE COUNTRIES THROUGH WHICH WE TRAVEL

To help local populations : There is no greater reward than the smile of a child. Our aim is to

symbolically sell the 3300km of our journey in order to be able to help the local populations by way

of sponsoring children with the “Plan France” and “Children of Mekong” organizations. We will have

the chance to meet the children we will be sponsoring, and their families, and we will have the

possibility to see how these organizations help them on a daily basis.

3. TO ALLOW THE CHILDREN TO TRAVEL

Through teaching them new games : With our desire to share our experiences and be open to the

local populations we wish to teach the children we meet in the various countries traditional games

that we will have learnt from French schoolchildren before leaving and also to learn the games they

play. We will then teach these to the French schoolchildren on our return.

By letting the children exchange a drawing : Drawing is a way for a children to express what they

feel, what they see and to describe their environment. Our idea is to exchange these drawings,

which would have the themes of house and family, between the schoolchildren. This would be a

way for them to understand the differences that can exist.

Page 8: Association Solidasport : Presenting portfolio

8

4. TO BROADEN AWARENESS OF OUR PROJECT

Sharing our experience : The witness accounts, reports, exchanges and advice that we have

received from others who have been on such adventures were of great import to us in the

preparation and fine tooth-combing of our project. In turn, we therefore wish to help those with

future such projects by maximizing our communication methods in order to share the experiences

that we will have had during our journey.

How we will do this ?

By creating and updating an internet site : www.solidasport.com

Before the journey: We will make all the information concerning our project available. We will

outline the project and its budget, travel details and a list of the supplies that we will be taking with

us. Visitors to the site will also have access to the accounts of our previous journeys including the

Lyon- Paris ride which is currently taking place.

During the journey: As soon as we have the opportunity, we will put an account and photos of the

previous days on our website. Our laptop will allow us to work on our site “Off Line” in order to

publish everything as quickly as possible once we find an internet connection.

After the journey: Upon our return we will put a video of our journey, photographs, some drawings

and a small file concerning the traditional games on our site.

Following of our project by the media :

We are currently beginning to let the media know about this project. We are keeping them

informed of all the activities that we are organizing (attendance at the “Festival of Lights” in Lyon,

the Lyon-Lille ride with the aim of gathering funds). We will put all of these articles and interviews

on the website.

Making of a video of our journey :

During our journey we will take the time to film ourselves, the landscapes and places we visit and

the people we meet in order to be able to show a complete account of this adventure upon our

return.

Exhibitions:

When we return, we wish to organize a photo exhibition which will display all the photos taken

before and during our journey, showing all the experiences that we will encounter and the people

that we will meet.

We will also display some of the drawings that we will collect along the way.

During this exhibition, we will officially present the funds collected to the organizations allowing us

to sponsor the children.

By organizing events :

Between September 2009 and June 2010 we are going to organize different events with the aim of

making as many people as possible aware of our project and also of collecting funds for the

organizations that are supporting us. We have already planned a football tournament, attendance

at the “Festival of Lights” in Lyon, and above all, the Lyon-Lille ride in cooperation with the

Professional Firemen’s Association.

1. PREPARATION

From July to September, 2009 : Creation and development of the project; creation of the

website, preparation of an introductory document, buying of the tandem and development of

communication tools.

From October 2009 to April 2010 : seeking of sponsors, door-to-door canvassing of companies,

preparation and finalization of events, selling of kilometers and training.

From May 2010 to June 2010 : Completion of preparation, getting the project out to the media,

sponsorship of the children and training.

2. DEPARTURE : Beginning of July 2010 – Date to be confirmed

3. DETAILS OF THE JOURNEY : Our journey will take us to five countries. We will leave from Hanoi in

Vietnam and continue on to Cambodia. After that we will head to Bangkok in Thailand and then to the

Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. After that we will go to Singapore to enable us lastly to get back to

Indonesia.

Page 10: Association Solidasport : Presenting portfolio

10

We will cover 3300 kilometers in 60 days, i.e. 55kms a day. This does not include rest days, meetings with

people, visiting the schools, traveling, unforeseen events and weather. We will essentially travel 70kms a

day.

These forecasts are also based on the experience of other riders.

The figures below are provisional. The timetable and the time spent in each country could change during

the journey depending on whom we meet, our wishes and unforeseen events.
