One thing is for sure; York really worked for us.

Kudos to all the custodial staff at York Middle School and everybody who went above and beyond to make it such a success. Pam did an excellent job in securing that venue and staying in constant contact with Mike, our on-site superhero.

We had a GREAT turnout at Chances R for a fun-filled awards banquet where we elected new, enthusiastic board members that will be working hard for you.

A WORD FROM KOBA

Hi all, Koba the bird here.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting me yet, let me tell you a bit about myself.

Devyn Bonge is my roommate. She’s pretty cool. She is a really scary nurse in a haunted house.

My grandma is Wendy Mues Bonge. She’s pretty cool, too. She is a great art teacher at St. Edwards and is passionate about bugs.

Both Devyn and Wendy are artists. They told me you are all artists, too! I’m looking forward to classes in Scottsbluff so I can learn to be a painter, too! Can’t wait to see you all!

Our fall meeting at Kearney worked out well, so we will be meeting there again in the spring. Scottsbluff is highly organized already, and I can say with great confidence that trekking west to ‘Art in the Valley’ next June will be all kinds of fun. Hope to see you there.

I’ve been WAY out west to Casper, Wyo., twice recently so it worked out for me to begin my goal of visiting members and clubs during my presidency. I truly admired Dale Masters for traveling the state to visit clubs, and that is the kind of president that I’ve always dreamed of being.

I knew for that to work, I’d have to be retired, and being I’m not, I’ll just do what I can when I can. I visited the Scottsbluff site for the 2018 Conference and then stopped to visit Marcia Bauerle in Imperial on the way back home. Last week, I stopped to see the renovations that Steph Mantooth has done with her studio in Alliance, and I was truly impressed.

I hope I can work more visits into my future.

Meanwhile, I’ll be trying to see what works and doesn’t work with ANAC’s video collection.

I’ve sorted and typed the collection but need to test them. Hopefully I will have a list in the spring newsletter and be able to post the update on our website. It is a slow process because I have a billion boxes of my own to make sense of at home and at school. I have to say, it’s more enjoyable to be under quilt-making stitches, doing art or reading a good book than organizing anything, especially in the winter. I’m bracing for the cold. I sure am glad that hot chocolate and hot tea taste so much better in my awesome York mug. I should mention here that there are some mugs, T-shirts and aprons from York still available. Just let me know and they can be yours.

Our membership will be due on March 1st, so we need to do what works well for ANAC: recruit new members, get news articles out there and be sure your club information is given to your Chamber of Commerce.

Sue Perez talked to Tiiu about her painting and found she often works from old photos from her European past. This piece was worked from a black and white photo that she took in the 50s. She was at a bus stop in Hamburg, Germany, on the way to Vienna. The lady in white was her mother, Tiiu laughed as she remembered her forceful stance.

ANAC Awards and Art Info

ANAC AWARD Deb Monfelt, Beatrice Art Guild

Deb has not only been a friend of art for many years, she has also been a servant to art... She has held every office the Beatrice club offered, organized art workshops and served twice as host club member when ANAC was in Beatrice. She has been on state board and was CEO six presidents back.

She is skilled at procuring workshop teachers for Beatrice. She is now judge acquistioner for ANAC.

She holds her own workshops and also teaches art to adults and kids in Beatrice and Fairbury. She holds a MFA and enjoys working in all media.

She exhibits at Red Path Gallery in Seward and Noyes Gallery in Lincoln.

Besides all this, she is a wife, mother and an inspiration to us all.”

A letter from Deb...

To the ANAC Board and members--Thanks for the beautiful ANAC award and all the fun at the conference this year! Thanks also for door prizes I won, including our president’s pottery which is the BEST! I feel very honored to receive the ANAC award. ANAC is a wonderful group and I wish many years of success for the future!

Sincerely,Deb

Gwen McKenzie scholarship Helen Ohme, Vissi d’Arte

The person who earned the Gwen McKenzie Scholarship this year is relatively new to ANAC. What she lacks in years of membership, she makes up for in enthusiasm. She has endeared herself to other members of her club by her ready heart. She participates in the art club’s activities and is a mentor to young artists.

Helen used her scholarship to attend classes at the 2017 ANAC Convention in York.

The city of North Platte, with almost 25,000 people, is halfway between Omaha and Denver on I-80/I-76. For our purposes, it is important because it boasts two ANAC affiliated art clubs, both with some amazing artists. And, for the third year in a row, a North Platte artist has won Best of Show at the ANAC convention. (Note: that means three different judges picked North Platte artists!)

This year’s Best of Show went to oil painter, Tiiu Swan (See Swan’s work on page 3) Tiiu is a long time member of Platter Painters, and is also a member of The North Platte Art Guild. Since both clubs meet only once a month, she says dual membership allows her to meet more people and to learn more (members can only submit to ANAC competition with one club). Tiiu works in oil from her studio above the Art and Gift Gallery in downtown North Platte. She used to be afraid of portraits, but her husband kept nagging her to paint people. She tried portraits to quiet him, and now it’s her preferred subject. “Everything else seems kind of soul-less now.”

Patsy Smith, a member of Platter Painters since moving to North Platte 55 years ago, was ANAC’s Best of Show artist in 2016. She cherishes the friendships, encouragement, and critiques club membership provides. Patsy is currently enjoying some recognition with her water media paintings included in a new North Light book, Art Journey: Abstract Painting, a Celebration of Contemporary Art, as well as an article in the November/December issue of Western Art and Architecture.

Best of Show in 2015 went to Sandra Meyer, a member and president of the North Platte Art Guild. She says it’s enabled her to get into art galleries state-wide and nationally, because it gave her the courage to try. For over 20 years, Sandy has taught weekly “Fun with Color”, a painting class for cancer survivors. Doctors noticed effects the class had on their cancer patients and began suggesting other patients join the class, which is centered on creativity, not illness. Sandy has also taught

painting classes in Estes Park, Colorado, and in the Virgin Islands. She specializes in watercolor and mixed media.

Judy Brown, who has been president of Platter Painters for over 30 years, says at one time their membership numbered over 100 from a large area of surrounding communities. They are currently hanging on with seven members, meeting on the second Tuesday of each month in a local restaurant to eat, discuss upcoming shows, and hire a judge to determine their entries for the ANAC competition.

The Art Guild meets on the first Monday of each month at the Art and Gift Gallery. All nine members participate with ANAC. Sandy says, “We’re an ANAC club, so you have to pay your dues.” They try to have some sort of art-making project at each meeting (paper making, painting collage tissue, fused glass, playing with clay, round-robin altered books, photography tricks, sharing books and magazines). They’ve had field trips to art shows in surrounding cities. Their big project is sponsoring the NebraskaLand Days Art Competition, which draws hundreds of entries from all over mid-America.

The Art and Gift Gallery, a co-op with five current members, and several guest artists, provides a great venue for members of both clubs to show their art, sponsoring monthly themed and juried competitions. The gallery also hosts ANAC’s travel show every year. (npartandgiftgallery.com)
