The Australian Refrigeration Association (ARA) is an independent non-profit association comprised of hVACr professionals and organisations, delivering solutions and assistance relevant to all hVACr supply chain stakeholders within Australia.
![Page 2: Association MeMbership Guideaustref.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/ARA-MEMBERSHIP-GUID… · to all hVACr supply chain stakeholders within Australia. Dear ARA Associate, This is](https://reader034.vdocuments.mx/reader034/viewer/2022042404/5f19737b2d9a6c62bb61153b/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Dear ARA Associate,
This is to describe the Australian Refrigeration Association (ARA) membership
development strategy; its relevance to your company and the important
role that we feel your company can play in association with the ARA. It is
an invitation for your company to join the ARA to enable us to support and
accelerate your company’s growth.
The ARA is expanding its membership to embrace all stakeholders in the
HVACR industry. In parallel we are increasing our communications platform
to reach the HVACR industry at large – users, specifiers, suppliers and
government. Membership development is the first step in significantly
increasing the role of the ARA in the HVACR industry on your behalf.
Over the past three years the ARA has had significant impact on policy in the
industry. We have played a central role in making the industry, the federal and
to some extent state governments aware of the opportunities and need for
improvement. We are now recognised for making an important contribution to
the industry in Australia and in fact internationally1. It is clear the ARA serves a
unique purpose and role in the HVACR industry.
At the heart of this strategy is the view that there is a large number of
companies that want and need to embrace the HVACR Integrated Energy
Efficiency Engineering platform (IEEE). The seminars we ran in November
2014 demonstrated strong support for this initiative but also demonstrated
there is an enormous untapped demand for HVACR energy efficiency and
emissions reduction. In parallel we are developing a number of initiatives
that will increase our services to ARA members including increased ARA
communications capability, increased digital marketing, cross selling and
support of IEEE commercialisation in all regards. This means promoting the
capabilities of your company.
In this regard we feel it is important to recognise the ARA is not your typical
industry association. We are very focused on commercialisation addressing
energy efficiency and emissions reduction. We therefore aim to support your
initiatives in this regard so long as they are consistent with the objectives of
the ARA. We have appointed The Association Specialists (TAS) to assist the
ARA in membership development and administration. In future you can expect
to hear from TAS in their role of improving ARA member communications.
Tim Edwards
President, Australian Refrigeration Association
Letter from the President
1 The ARA is a member of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, the Australian Energy Efficiency Council and PRIME (HVACR industry initiative for emissions reduction). We are active in a number of ongoing industry consultation programs with the federal government.

Our Mission The purpose of the ARA is to advance the science and
practice of refrigeration, in the national interest, in all of
its applications, in the development of its methods and
technology, and in its uses in the community.
The scope of the ARA’s work includes all uses of heat
exchange technology spanning refrigeration, air conditioning,
heat pumps, hot water and cogeneration involving heat
exchange. These applications of heat exchange are present
in a wide range of industrial, commercial, domestic and
government operations. They are fundamental to the quality of
life in our society as well as making a major contribution to the
energy efficiency and Greenhouse Gas emissions of modern
civil society.
The ARA recognises HVACR energy efficiency is fundamentally
dependent on high performance energy management and heat
load management. As a result the scope of the ARA’s activities
will address the full range of integrated energy efficiency
engineering opportunities.
The HVACR industry will experience rapid development over
the next few years as new, energy efficient, low emissions
technology causes the industry to significantly improve its
performance. In our view the industry has the potential to
reduce energy use by $10B PA and reduce GHG emissions
by 50%, a reduction in national emissions by 7% from
HVACR alone.
There are 20,000 firms supplying services to the HVACR
industry and hundreds of thousands of large end users, in
addition to millions of SME commercial and residential users
spanning all sectors industrial, commercial and residential.
There is an enormous educational task at hand. There is a
fundamental policy development requirement that will make a
major contribution to the national interest.
The ARA will function as a nexus for the entire range of
stakeholders in the industry enabling both suppliers and users
to collaborate in the development of policies and technologies
that deliver energy efficiency and emissions reduction.
For further explanation see the ARA Terms of Reference on the
ARA Website. The ARA is a member of the Energy Efficiency
Council and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition.
Membership Structure There are a number of ways to become a member of ARA.
All of the membership types described below are available
to companies, organisations or individuals involved in one
or more aspects of the HVACR industry: manufacture,
distribution and sale, design and consulting, use, research
and assessment, training and end of life management of
HVACR components. All ARA members are required to
agree to the ARA Code of Conduct.
The membership structure of ARA includes:
> Corporate Members
> Founding Members
> Affiliate Members
> Individual & Tradesperson Members
> Student Members

Corporate MemberCompanies eligible to be ARA Corporate Members are
those companies that aim to participate in the development
of HVACR industry as energy efficient, environmentally
responsible and safe. Corporate membership is open to all
functions in the HVACR industry spanning manufacturers,
specifiers and engineers, contractors, consultants,
researchers and users of HVACR services. The ARA aims to
support the development of these companies and the growth
of their contribution to the industry in Australia and worldwide.
It is the ARA’s objective to accelerate to commercialisation
of energy efficient, low emissions HVACR as delivered by
our members. To that end the ARA will work closely with its
Corporate Members to supply services and programs that
enable them to accelerate the growth of their company.
Corporate members have the right to publish a page on the
ARA website and be recognized as Corporate members on
the ARA Home Page. Corporate members will be featured in
ARA advice.
Corporate members are expected and will be invited to
participate directly in the energy efficiency and emissions
reduction of the industry by way of ARA subcommittees for
these and related purposes. In this way it is our intention to
enable both suppliers and end users to contribute to and
learn how to deliver energy efficiency and emissions reduction
in HVACR.
Corporate members and Founding members have the right to
attend all ARA meetings, nominate to the ARA Board and vote
on matters submitted to the membership by the ARA Board.
Founding MemberThe Founding Members of ARA are those companies that
had the foresight to contribute to the development of the
ARA. Founding membership is therefore reserved to those
corporate members joining the ARA prior to Dec 2014 and
is indicative of their early commitment to the ethos of the
ARA. Founding Members hold the same status as Corporate
Members in all other respects.
Affiliate MemberA wide range of organisations are eligible to be Affiliate
Members including HVACR contractors and specifiers, energy
savings consultants, facilities managers, architects, builders
and users. In inviting his category of organization to join the
ARA we aim the work with and assist the broadest possible
range of HVACR stakeholders and encourage them to engage
with us in the development of HVACR energy efficiency and
emissions reduction. Government organisations, Universities
and Educational institutions, Research Institutions, Industry
Associations and Non-Government organisations, are also
eligible to be Affiliate Members if they are engaged in the
activities consistent with the work of ARA.
There is considerable opportunity for affiliate members to
participate and engage in the work of ARA in view of the
scope of ARA operations and the importance of research,
policy development and training required to achieve transition.
Integrated Energy Efficiency Engineering (IEEE) is a broad
field requiring the involvement of a wide range of disciplines
concerned with HVACR energy efficiency.
Affiliate members will be listed on the ARA website and
have the right to participate in ARA work with equal status
to all other members. Affiliate members will receive the ARA
newsletter and access to ARA research files at no cost and
receive discounted access to ARA events.
Affiliate Members have the right to attend and vote at ARA
meetings including annual general meeting and special
general meetings.
