Letter from the VPs: Changing

Demographics With the growth and development of the surrounding areas , the neighborhood

is changing. Properties are being purchased by investors and houses are being

flipped. Many folks may not know their neighbors. And many more may not be

able to attend meetings to hear updates, ask questions, and share news about

the neighborhood.

As our neighborhood changes, the neighborhood association will need to

change accordingly. We hope that we can all work together to identify the

issues most important to our community. It will take diligence and cooperation

to deal with these issues in an effective and productive manner. We openly

welcome all residents to be active in the neighborhood and encourage broad

participation in the association, knowing full well that involvement is just one

more thing competing for time in already busy schedules.

The board hopes that our new and existing residents will participate in the

association and consider leadership roles. We need your help!

Know the Right of Way, Clear the Right

of Way Courtesy of City of Austin

Your cooperation is needed! Streets, sidewalks, and other public rights of way are for

everyone’s use. Property owners are responsible for their private trees and all other

vegetation in the public right-of-way next to their property. Overgrown vegetation is a

safety hazard and limits the use of sidewalks, trails, streets and alleys. It further threatens

public safety when vegetation blocks the view of traffic signs, signals, vehicles, or cyclists.

Trimming vegetation and caring for your trees are effective ways residents can enhance

neighborhood safety.

Prune your trees and trim or remove any vegetation that obstructs or grows into sidewalks,

streets or alleys. Use the following quick guidelines to help keep the right-of-way clear:

• Sidewalks: Limbs and vegetation must be trimmed back from the edge of and at

least 8 feet above sidewalk.

• Streets: Limbs and vegetation must be trimmed back from the curb line (edge of

street) and at least 14 feet above street.

• Multi-use Trails: Limbs and vegetation must be trimmed back from the edge of and

at least 10 feet above multi-use trails.

• Grass and Weeds: Maintain grass and weeds at a maximum height of 12 inches

throughout property to the edge of the street or alley.

• Corners: Maintain vegetation at a maximum of 2 feet above ground within a 10 foot

setback from the curb line (edge of street) and 40 feet along the curb line from the

street intersection.

• Fire Hydrants: Remove trees or plants within 5 feet of fire hydrants.

Eco Corner By Debra Sue Trinque

As you may know there is a recycling center off Ben White Blvd. that accepts used paint

and other chemicals. Did you know that they also hand out paint for FREE to Austinites?

They have 3 colors which come in 3.5-gallon buckets. They have a beige called Texas

Limestone; a dark beige called Balcones Canyonland, and a dark green called Barton Creek

Greenbelt. All you have to do is go to: 2514 Business Center Drive, Austin, TX 78744; tell

them you are there to pick up paint; collect the amount and color you want; and drive off.

Their hours are Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday: 7 a.m. to noon. Talk about

a way to help the environment and save yourself some money!

Code Compliance Update By Vanessa Matocha

Elaine Garrett (supervisor) and Nicole Leal (officer assigned to our area) as well as Adam

Solis (APD representative) pointed out the longest standing issue in our neighborhood is

the homeless and trash accumulation along Wedgewood and Braker Lane. Code stated they

would be contacting Ray King (Peterson family representative) again to have him clean up

the documented trash accumulation along Wedgewood. The trash in the ditches feed into

the small creek along Wedgewood Dr that feeds into Walnut Creek thus polluting this

waterway. Officer Solis stated that the Criminal Trespass Notice (CTN) on the property has

expired and that a new one needed to be signed for APD to enter the property to remove

the homeless. He will be working with the Starr family to have the CTN signed. Code and

APD ask that the neighborhood residents continue to update them of problems using the

311 app on your phone or call 311. Reports can be made anonymously.

Want to learn more? A summary of common code violations in our neighborhood can be found at

newcna.org.

Zoning & Development Update By Vanessa Matocha

The initial development of the property at 861 E. Braker Lane for the QuikTrip #4126 has

begun. There will be three points of ingress/egress from the property. One will be located

on Joseph Clayton, another off Braker Lane, and the third on Bluff Bend running behind

Vasquez.
