Waterloo - a British Victory?

The bicentenary of this major battle allows us to re-examine the importance of this victory to Britain and to Europe. My, my, at Waterloo Napoleon did surrender, oh yeah! Unparalleled as singers, Abba´s ideas on history are a little unconventional, not to say plain wrong. It is certain that Bonaparte lost the battle, and spent the remainder of his life well out of harm´s way on St He-lena. Britain´s wartime economy grew enormously as a result of Wellington´s victorious campaign in the peninsula and her reputation grew even further after the victory at Waterloo.  But if we examine the de-tails of the Waterloo campaign, we discover that Brit-ish participation was not as great as we might think; that history has been warped by Wellington´s famous

Despatch; and much later, that Wellington was involved in sup-pressing details which show him in a less than heroic light.  So who were the real vic-tors in the Waterloo campa ign? Who should bear the lau-rels for Bonaparte´s downfall? Why has this piece of history

been suppressed, and what difference does it make to our view of subse-quent European history?

Classical Music Jubilee with 11 Stars! I am delighted that we have ten young, talented students of music to perform in our final concert of the season. The students: Ana Sofia Barradas, Arina Naumova, Polina Naumova, Salomé Lourenço, Rui Wang, Alexandre Mateus, Luana Ambrósio, André Monteiro, Diogo Fer-reira, Yannis Stamoulis and Tómas Mician are all aged between 10 and 14 and they perform regularly at con-certs and festivals. They have already won a number of awards at music competitions. They will be perform-ing works by Grieg, Mussorgsky, Glinka, Piazolla, Milhaud, Chopin, Scarlatti, Idanov, Kabilevsky, Gavrilov, Carroll, Andriessen and Rachmaninov and Schumann. Sisters Polina and Arina Naumova have been playing together for 4 years as the Duo Polarte. In October 2014 they won the 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Maria Campina Annual Competition and in 2008 they won 3rd place in the Concours of Scriabin in Paris. The Trio Opus 3 (André Monteiro - clarinet; Diogo Ferreira - violin; and Arina Naumova - Piano) and Duo PianoDance (Luana Ambrósio and Alexandre Mateus) are students of Pro-fessora Oxana Anikeeva . The concert will be held on Sunday 14 June at 17h00 at the Quintinha da Música, near Tavira. Tick-ets are €15. Interval tapas and drinks are included in the price. Any surplus from this event will be donated to the Regional Conservatory in Faro.

Tavira Ciné Clube and Tavira International Film Festivalhttp://www.algarvedailynews.com/features/algarve-legends/109-andre-viane-cinema-paraisoAbove is the link to an article I wrote about André as part of my series Algarve Legends. At present the projector needs to be repaired and there is a fundraising effort in place to ensure that films can be shown not only at the weekly ciné clube but also at the two Summer International Film Festivals that An-dré organises in July (European Films 17th- 27th) and in August (non-European films 7th - 17th) in the cloisters of the Carmo Convent in Tavira. www.cineclube-tavira.com.

The New Orleans Jazz Band Live at the Casa do Povo, MoncarapachoThe New Orleans Jazz Band - on one of its rare forays to the Sotovento - will be playing on Saturday 6 June at 7 pm at the Casa do Povo in Moncarapacho. This is a new venue for the Algarve´s number one Dixieland jazz band and the management hopes that it will play there on a regular basis. The Casa do Povo already has a regular Sunday afternoon tea dance which is very popular, attracting scores of people - although very few estrangeiros. Joaquim, President of the Casa do Povo is sorry that more foreigners do not attend his tea-dances. He hopes to attract more foreigners with Dixieland and New Orleans style jazz. There is a huge dance hall with stage plus lots of outside terrace space.

The New Orleans Jazz Band was formed in 1998 by a group of international jazz musicians, all now living in the Algarve. The Band performed at the 1999 Loulé International Jazz Festival and since then it has become the busiest band in the Algarve. The current line up of the Band is Ray Charsley (trumpet/vocals), Dave Lawson (clarinet/saxophones), John Ballinger (trombone/vocals), Cory Sea (guitar), Luís Hilário (contra bass) and Tony Scriven (drums(leader/vocals). The Band plays a mixture of blues, stomps, marches, spirituals and ragtime. Great music for dancing! They will be playing 3 x 50 minute sets all for the price of €10 (non members) or €6 (for members of the Casa do Povo).

For those that need energy for dancing, Chef Mark Weiss will be preparing a 3 course Cajun meal (€18) including homemade breads, light bites, cream of avocado soup - Creole style; fresh swordfish with cajun sauce or Cajun slow roasted ribs (with bbq sauce), fresh salads with organic herbs and dressing, Cajun potatoes, rice; Mississippi mud pie, Cajun bread pudding or a sorbet.
