ASSO 99 CLASS – NATIONAL OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP 2015
AND THE WINNER IS… ASSTERISCO!
Castelletto di Brenzone – The Asso 99 National Open Championship ended with Assterisco’s landslide victory. The boat
won five of the eight races, flying on top of the ranking. Idefix gained the second place, while Caminala-Vetrocar took
the third step of the podium.
The Asso 99 National Open Championship, organized by the Brenzone Sailing Club, in partnership with the XIV FIV Zone
and with the Asso 99 Class, ended on Sunday.
Three days of races, eight trials, twelve boats, two transalpine teams… The balance of this 2015 edition is absolutely
positive. Even the weather was clement: indeed, a brisk but moderate wind accompanied the whole competition.
The first day didn’t start so well for Assterisco, since it was forced to race with a broken winch. Paolo Moccia, the tailer,
was exhausted, while he was telling us about the efforts of the first three races: “It was hard, but we succeeded in
winning at least one race. Tomorrow is a new day; we hope not to break anything.”
The day after turned out to be more indulgent,
actually. Omboni and his team started from a third
place in the temporary ranking, following Brighenti,
on board Caminala-Vetrocar, and Cavallini, who
occupied the first place. Confusione, owned by Elena
Reboldi, surprisingly won the first Saturday regatta.
The boat, helmed by Raffaele Bonatti, crossed the
finish line before Idefix and Assterisco, which
started the day with a third place. However,
Zamboni’s team was not inclined to make do with
that result and so they went for the second victory,
which was immediately followed by a third one.
And it was right on the last Saturday race that the
first objections rose up.
Indeed, Prince Luitpold affirmed that, turning the
last buoy of the windward segment, Assterisco’s
crew obstructed his boat, Koenig Ludwig. The
Cavallinis, who turned in fourth position, testified in
Luitpold favor, while Omboni and his companions
were supported by Asso di Poppe’s crew, who
declared that they had not seen Assterisco breaking
any rule.
The objection was rejected and the second day
ranking remained the same: Assterisco was leading
the game, with 10 points and it was followed by
Idefix – 11 points – and by Caminala – 20 points.
The first signal for the next and last day was settled on 8.30 am, to avoid the bad weather forecasted for Sunday
afternoon.
The start was a little delayed, around 9:00 am. The wind was brisk, especially during the first race, which was dominated
by Idefix, in the beginning. After a perfect start, Cavallini turned the first buoy in first position, but in the leeward
segment, Assterisco overtook Idefix and, from that moment on, it led the race, till the end, crossing the finish line
followed by Idefix and Gradasso.
Same plot also for the second and last race of the competition. Assterisco won, once again, but this time it was followed
by Caminala, while Idefix gained the third place.
After the great achievement obtained at the Trans Benaco Cruise and the first place in the Gorla Trophy Class ranking,
here it is another success for Assterisco’s haighly qualified crew – Pier Omboni, Paolo Moccia, Marco Carattoni, Pietro
Biemmi, Fabrizio Butturini and Piergiorgio Zamboni – who conquered his seventh Italian title.
Second place for the Cavallinis: Gianni and his two sons, Marco and Paolo, who gave an hard time to the first one in
the ranking.
Caminala-Vetrocar, owned by Federico Avesani and steered by Ivano Brighenti, gained third place, while Prince Luitpold,
who gained fifth place, is going back home with the Best Owner-Helmsman Trophy.
