2. HISTORY Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in 1987. The band consists of leadvocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt, anddrummer Tre Cool. Cool replaced former drummer John Kiffmeyer in 1990, prior to therecording of the bands second studio album, Kerplunk, and has been a member of theband since. Green Day has sold over 65 million records worldwide with 25 million in the US alone.[7]The group has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best RockAlbum for American Idiot, Record of the Year for "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", BestRock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical ShowAlbum for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording. Itwas released on September 21, 2004 through Reprise Records and was produced bylongtime collaborator Rob Cavallo. In mid-2003, the band began recording songs for analbum titled Cigarettes and Valentines. However, the master tracks were stolen and theband decided to start over rather than re-record Cigarettes and Valentines. The groupdecided to produce a rock opera, inspired by the work of The Who and several musicals.It follows the life of Jesus of Suburbia, a character with anti-hero image created by BillieJoe Armstrong. Following early recording at Studio 880 in Oakland, California, the bandfinished the album at Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood. 5.
