    THE RATES OF CHEMICAL REACTION

    Teachers guide/Chemistry/ Spreadsheet

    SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT

Reaction rate or rate of reaction is a measure of how fast a reaction occurs. A reaction can occur at differentrates under different conditions. Conditions that affect the rate of reaction include temperature, reactantconcentration, surface area and the presence of a catalyst.

When reaction occur, reactant will decrease and the product will increase as the time pass away. So, the rateof reaction can be determined with the measurement rate of loosing reactant or rate of products form.

    Temperature effects

When the temperature of reactants is increased, the rates of reaction will also increase. Because the kinetic energy of particles increase. The particles of the reactant move faster. The number of particles which achieved activation energy also increases. The frequency of collisions between particles also increases. The effective collision frequency between particles also increases. The rate of reaction will increase too.

High temperature Low temperature(higher kinetic energy, more collision) (lower kinetic energy, less collision)

    UNIQUE FEATURE OF THIS ACTIVITY

Students are able to visualize the movement of molecule depends on the temperature.

Students are able to understand how the temperature affects the rate of chemical reaction.

The changing of environment of reactant or product will resulting different rate of reactions

Temperature of the reaction can manipulate the resulting data.

Controlling the variables to get such result by relating it with time.

The ability of spreadsheet to show the data taken from experiment and view it in simple form and

easy to produce and process the data.

Allow the students to explore some kind of visualizing important data in digital graphic form like

graph that generated by spreadsheet data like Microsoft Excel.

    ENGAGING

    Making Drinks

You are given the pictures as shown below:

Adding Sugar to Water to Make Sugar Syrup

    Dissolving Sugar in Water

    Questions:

    1. What happen to the sugar that you see from the picture above?

    2. How long the time is needed for the sugar to dissolve if hot or cold water is used to making drink?

    3. How could this happen?

    Answers:

    1. Sugar dissolves in water.

    2. Sugar will take a shorter time to dissolve in hot water compare to cold water.

    3. When the temperature increases, the kinetic energy of the sugar molecule will be increases, the

frequency of effective collision will increases too, thus will increase the rate of the reaction.

    EMPOWER

    Step

    Student are given below apparatus:

Student are also provided with below materials: 0.1 moldm -3 sodium thiosulphate solution 1.0 moldm -3 sulphuric acid

Student needs to plan an experiment to determine the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction. Student has to construct a hypothesis for this experiment. Student should know the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction. Teacher will help student to determine the variable involved.

Teacher may give these instruction to start the activity:

    1) By using measuring cylinder, measure 50 cm 3 of 0.1 moldm -3 sodium thiosulphate solution and pour

it into a clean, dry conical flask.

    2) Measure the temperature of sodium thiosulphate with a thermometer.

    3) Using a measuring cylinder, measure 5 cm 3 of 1.0 moldm -3of suphuric acid and pour it into thesodium thiosulphate solution.

    4) Put the white paper with mark X under the conical flask.

    5) Immediately start the stopwatch and swirled the conical flask gently.

    6) View the mark X from above.

    7) Stop the stopwatch as soon as the mark disappear from view and record the time taken for mark Xto disappear.

    8) Clean and dry the conical flask.

    9) Pour 50cm 3 of sodium thiosulphate in to the conical flask.

    10) Heat the solution until the temperature reaches about 45C . The setup of the apparatus as below,

How to draw a graph with the spreadsheet

To draw graph of temperature against time, copy result from the table and put into a new table.

Highlight A8 to F9 , click insert scatter , this will draw a line graph base the data from thehighlight area that is temperature versus time.

Click layout, chart title, to type the title of the graph.

Click layout again, axis titles to write the title of y-axis as 1/time and x-axis as temperature.

To draw graph of temperature against 1/time,copy result from the table and put into a new table.

Repeat the step above to draw graph of temperature against 1/time.

    Questions:

    1. What is the colour of the solution formed? What is produced?

    2.

Explain why the X mark disappears from the sight?

    3. State the hypothesis of this experiment and can the hypothesis be accepted?

    4. What is the relationship of temperature on the rate of reaction that can be deduced from the graph

    plotted?

    5. Explain your answer in question 4 in term of collision theory.

    Answers:

    1. Yellow solution/precipitate formed which is the formation of sulphur.

    2. The X mark disappears of the sight because the precipitate/sulphur formed and covers the X mark.

    3. The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of reaction.

    4. The temperature is directly proportion to the rate of the reaction. When the temperature increase, the rate

    of reaction will be increase.

    5. When the temperature increases, the kinetic energy of particles increases so the reactant will move faster.

The frequency of collision will be increases causing the effective collision frequency between particles

also increases. The rate of reaction will be increases.

    ENHANCE

Formation of fungus on the bread

    Questions:

    1. Does temperature affect the time it takes for the fungus to grow on bread?

    2. If the bread is left on the cold and hot surrounding for two days, which one will grow more fungus?

    3. Explain your answer on how temperature affects the growth of fungus?

    Answers:

    1. Yes, temperature will affect the time taken for the growth of fungus.

    2. The bread in the hot surrounding will produce more fungus compared to the cold surrounding.

    3. Fungus needs a warm and moisture surrounding to grow. The warm comes from the surrounding

temperature and the moisture from the bread itself. In the hot temperature, fungus will be encouraged to

growth on the bread, this will produce a higher for the growth of the fungus. If the temperature is too

cold, the reactions will slow down and the rate of growth will decrease.
