• Set the timer on the microwave

• Tapped her foot incessantly

• One boy microwaved Campbell’s soup and it exploded

• He walked away from the mess and pretended it wasn’t his

• Walked over to the clean microwave and burned popcorn

• Wore thick framed glasses and a faded Superman tee

• A girl in a blue Hofstra sweatshirt and yoga pants fried hash browns and meatballs

• She cleaned up quietly and sat at the table next to her boyfriend and they shared the food

• She forgot to turn off the burner• She took off her sweatshirt to eat and then put it

back on when she was finished• Her boyfriend ate very little• She took off her moccasins and sat on her feet

while she ate• Minimal conversation while she cooked and while

they ate

Ethnographic Research Findings

• Mostly everyone that made something substantial had someone with them

• Students had little experience in the kitchen• Students were impatient while making their

“food”• Students seemed distracted, like they were

thinking about many other things besides cooking
