‘Social Media’– The

Hegemonic Puppeteer

• Presenter talking about the whole documentary, the purpose - how social media is controlling what information we receive, in Facebook, YouTube, Google, Twitter

• Montage footage of people interacting with different forms of media –people on their iPads, iPhones, Blackberry’s, Laptops etc.

• E.g. internet, phones, TV…Including establishing shot of internet cafes (high angles, low angles), a bedroom (with tech), train station (people on phones) with close up of Wi-Fi connecting

• Show case study of the boy who killed his mum mimicking the soap‘Coronation Street’, with archival footage of news broadcast

- History of the Web. - How it has evolved.- The way we communicate

has been revolutionised.- Interviews with older

generation on their experiences of how the Web has progressed.

- Social networking sites.- Statistics on how far the

world has become obsessed with them.

- How this makes for a perfect tool, for controlling views and ideologies.

- E.g. Hash-tag : ‘Twitter’ on TV

- What algorithms are and how they work.

- How algorithms are used to subtly control or manipulate society.

‘Social Media’ – Fighting

- The different types of social Media platforms.

- The way that they use algorithms to cater to the individual varies.

- How society is fighting against a hegemonic media platform.

- Wikipedia's and Blogs.- How they generate their

own information. - Blogs are not censored

(Freedom of speech)

- How we think we are being given various choices, however these choices are provided by higher powers who determine your search results.

- E.g. ‘Online Dating’ : Your match is determined for you.

- Does technological convergence aid a democratic media landscape or does it enforce a hegemonic one.

‘Film & Television’

- How are we influenced by the things that we watch?

- How it has been integrated into everyday television.

- Films : Used to install certain ideologies within society or promote these ideologies.

- Examples of specific films that have influence the world the most alongside with statistics.

- How stereotypes have become hegemonic through someone'sdictation of script.

- This is liked to the propaganda used in WW1 and WW2 to promote the Nazi Regime.

- The news and how people have no control over what is shown.

- What is shown on the news is specifically chosen for a certain representation.

• Presenterintroducing the episode on social networking (Facebook, YouTube and Twitter) including statistics on how much people use it

• Show supporting footage of YouTube (Clips of YouTube Celebs increasing viewers), Google, Facebook, with voiceover of statistics on dominant pages, and their influence of people with more statistics

• First subtopic is the Revolution of theWeb.

• This will include public interview at Trafalgar square (older generation) to ask how it changed.

• Show a time line animation of the growth.

• The stages of Web 1, 2 and 3 – How have they developed or progressed.

• Show examples of how they are applied. E.g. Rahel’s Facebook liking pages and its affect on her news feed.

• Public interviews and statistics.

• E.g. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Social News and Vimeo.

• Then introduce algorithms and how they are a tool used to subtly control society.

• We will have expert interviews (technicians) and public ones at Trafalgar square.

• Show examples of how we receive different search results.

2 Minute Introduction (Series)

15 secs: Show establishing shot of people walking (fast motion) with statistics followed by shots of Internet café users.

15 secs: iPhone - close up of its uses (Google), shot of the TV showing hashtag to share their views.

15 secs: Presenter introduces herself and what she will be exploring throughout the documentary series.

15 secs: Presenter goes through the different types of media.

15 secs: Presenter talking about how we are influenced by what we watch and how higher powers use this as a form of control.

15 secs: Show case study of the boy who killed his mum mimicking the soap ‘Coronation Street’, with archival footage of news broadcast.

15 secs: Presenter discusses the two sides of the debate. (hegemonic or democratic)

15 secs: She asks 3 rhetorical questions, finishing on the documentary series title question, followed by an animation of the title.

1 Minute Introduction (Episode)

30 secs: Presenter inside Internet Café, gets up and walks out while talking about different platforms of social media.

15 secs: How Facebook also caters to the individual through their ‘News Feed’- With voice-over. (Example of real Facebook page.)

15 secs: Statistics of how far people have become obsessed with social networking, thus making it the perfect tool to control people.

2 Minute (To Focus On First Subtopic Of Episode)

15 secs: Animation of a time-line of how the internet has progressed – Web 1.0 qualities (sociological theory ‘upsurge’) how it was hegemonic (Information comes out but none come in)

15 secs: Presenter talks about examples – Social news, online dating, Wikipedia etc…

15 secs: Animation moves to Web 2.0 () Montage footage of ‘YouTube’ celebrities (online videos) – Animation of number of views increasing. Alongside will be a voiceover by presenter.

15 secs: Public interview – quoted significant things they say on Web 2.0

15 secs: Lastly Web 3.0 (Future)Presenter informs on the filter bubble with a ‘bubble’ animation to show them Example of two different people typing in the same thing into Google and receiving different search results.
