Trends and Issues

Peta Scorer 30466334 Assignment 1 EDU205 ICT in the Classroom

A major trend in the teaching of high school science is the use of digital media applications. One important application is computer simulations. They can be defined as

“Highly individualised and flexible programs that allow learners to test hypotheses, display knowledge, repair errors in thinking, and solve problems in an artificial environment that imitates the real world”.

(Snowman, Dobozy, Scevak, Bryer, Barlett, & Biehler, 2009. p. 238)

Issues I will look at in this presentation include

• Effectiveness• Availability and Cost of Resources• Implementation Time (teachers and students)• Implication for Teachers• Change of Practices• Future Directions

Journal ArticleFindings:

“Students who used the simulated equipment outperformed their counterparts both on a conceptual survey of the domain and in the coordinated tasks of assembling a real circuit and describing how it worked.”

(Finkelstein, Adams, Keller, Kohl, Perkins, Podolefsky, & Reid, 2005 para1)

“……. these sims (sic) use a layered structure to allow students to first explore and construct a conceptual understanding with idealized equipment, and then move from the ideal to the complexities encountered in real life.”

(Perkins, Adams, Dubson, Finkelstein, Reid, Wieman, & LeMaster, 2006 p.22)

This video seeks:

“To deepen the professional practice of physics educators, we (sic) seek to highlight the Open Source Physics (OSP) and Easy Java Simulation(Ejs) community of educators that engage, enable and empower teachers as learners so that we can be leaders in our teaching practice.”

(Wee, L. K. 2010)

Podcast

“Virtual reality is the use of a computer to create an artificial environment that appears and feels like a real environment and allows you to explore space and manipulate the settings.”

(Shelley, Cashman, Gunter, & Gunter, 2008 p.283)

Conclusion

Peta Scorer 30466334 Assignment 1 EDU205 ICT in the Classroom

*Simulations are educationally effective.

*Freely available online with standard computer.

*Supported by large online collaborative teaching community.

*Save preparation and troubleshooting time.

Conclusion

Peta Scorer 30466334 Assignment 1 EDU205 ICT in the Classroom

*Students spend more time on task.

*Simulations more student centred.

*Students can act as designers.

*Availability of Technology raises equity issues.

*Is virtual Reality technology the way of the future for science education?
