Individuals who wish to become IREC ISPQ certified as Affiliated or Independent Master Trainers or Instructors will submit evidence that they meet eligibility requirements for the credential. As an assessor you will need to verify and evaluate this documentation.

Lets take a look at those requirements for each credential.3

M4L1S3&4

Instructors teach courses in renewable energy, energy efficiency or distributed generation and have the appropriate training and experience within their field of expertise.

Affiliated Instructors or Master trainers must be contracted or employed by an IREC ISPQ credentialed Training Program, Continuing Education Provider, or Independent Master Trainer.

The Instructor must also document teaching experience, education and practical experience equivalent to 470 contact hours.

Master Trainers have significantly more experience and education and are also qualified to train other instructors in their field of expertise.

In addition, the Affiliated Master Trainer candidate must document training experience, education and practical experience equivalent to 1280 contact hours

Affiliated Certifications

M4L1S4a

With Affiliated certifications, the employer is responsible for providing the administrative and management infrastructure that supports quality training as well as the facilities, tools and equipment; and receives the invoice for annual fees on behalf of the instructor.5

M4L1S5

Candidates for Certified Independent Master Trainer have the same levels of experience as Affiliated Master Trainers but are also qualified to deliver training independent of a fixed facility or program.

Independent Master Trainers are responsible for the quality management of the training they provide and the qualifications of any staff. They also ensure that all training is delivered in facilities and with equipment and resources that meet the IREC ISPQ standards.

Eligibility Requirements for Certified Independent Master Trainer are similar to those required of Affiliated Master trainers with some additions.

M4L2S1

In order to become certified as an IREC ISPQ Certified Instructor or Certified Master Trainer, a candidate must have a combination of teaching and actual hands-on practical experience. Teaching experience can be drawn from field-related and general classroom, lab or on-site training. The candidate can also claim credit for any degrees, continuing education courses or specialized training related to teaching skills they have received. 9

M4L2S2

Practical experience can be drawn from a variety of sources. Direct, hands-on experience with projects and installations is most valued but project supervisions and in-field and industry related work such as service on field-related technical committees, industry experience in sales or marketing, and receiving a nationally recognized field-related credential can also be claimed.10

M4L2S3

The minimum 1280 contact hours necessary to become a certified master trainer is divided into 900 teaching contact hours and 380 practical experience contact hours. For Instructors the requirements are 220 contact hours in teaching and 250 contact hours in practical experience.11

Lesson:Experience1 Contact Hour =

Assessor Training

A minimum of 50 minutes of instruction or similar activity

M4L2S4

The unit of measure used for calculating professional experience requirements is the contact hour.

For teaching, one contact hour equates to no less than fifty minutes of classroom time with either: direct student-teacher interaction; or, a planned activity where the learner receives feedback and where his/her progress is monitored (e.g., course labs; computer-assisted instruction; interactive video/CD/DVD; and/or, web based learning). 12

Lesson:ExperienceTeaching Experience

Assessor Training

M4L2S5

An Experience Worksheet has been developed to assist both candidates and assessors in tracking and verifying experience.

The first section of the worksheet indicates minimum or maximum contact hours needed for Teaching Experience.

A minimum number of contact hours in the relevant energy field is required for both Instructors and Master Trainer candidates.13

Lesson:ExperienceTeaching Experience Evidence

Transcripts

Course certificates

Class rosters

Letters from employers

M4L2S5a

Candidates must provide evidence that documents the contact hours they are claiming. This could include copies of transcripts, course certificates, class registration rosters or letters from past employers indicating the courses that have been taught by the candidate.14

Lesson:ExperiencePractical Experience

Assessor Training

M4L2S6

Equivalencies in contact hours have been established for each type of practical experience. For example a professional field installation counts as 20 hours. These equivalencies are indicated in the experience worksheet.

As with teaching experience, all practical experience listed must be documented.

Candidates should list the most recent experience first and provide sufficient documentation to prove that they really were substantially involved. 15

Descriptions of jobs/installsSize of systemsLevel of responsibilityWork ordersPermits, license #s, inspection certificates

M4L2S6a

Such documentation would include; detailed descriptions of energy efficiency projects or jobs, or renewable energy installed systems, the size of systems and components, level of responsibility, and copies of; work orders, permits, license numbers, or inspection certificates.

Optional documentation that the candidate feels verifies their role in the project might include design plans. Photos or letters from customers can also be included.

Lesson:ExperiencePractical Experience

M4L2S7

Continuing Education courses on relevant Renewable or Energy Efficient topics, and degrees in relevant fields, like energy management or engineering, may also contribute to a candidate meeting the needed contact hours in practical experience. 17

Lesson:ExperiencePractical Experience

Assessor Training

Written justification if requirements not metNo more experience than requiredWithin last five years

M4L2S7a

All experience claimed must have been acquired within the past 5 years.

Applicants are advised not to claim more experience than is required. Because all experience claimed must be documented, this can slow down the assessment process.

Candidates who do not meet experience and teaching requirements may submit a written justification to explain why they still feel they are qualified for IREC ISPQ Certification. 18Learning Activity

This module has given you information you will need to review and verify experience requirements for Candidates for IREC ISPQ certification.

You learned that the primary difference between Independent and Affiliated Instructors and Master Trainers is that Independent Master Trainers and Instructors are qualified to deliver trainings independent of a fixed facility or program and are responsible for quality management of all aspects of the training they provide, while Affiliated professionals provide training under the auspices of an IREC ISPQ accredited training program, continuing education provider or independent master trainer.

You also learned about the experience contact hour requirements for the different certifications, outlined again on this slide. 24

Summary

Assessor Training

M4SS2

You learned that examples of acceptable documentation of experience are; transcripts, letters verifying employment, line drawings and permits, or other evidence that experience is legitimate. Also, that experience must have been within the last 5 years. 25Module 4 complete.Thank you.
