assessment of muscle power

Assessment of muscle powerPresented by: Jwanika

Strength vs. Power Strength
Strength is the amount of force a muscle or group of muscle can exerts against an external load- a barbell in case of weight lifting.
In strength speed of the movement is not imp.
Ex. – squats, shoulder presses, pull ups, bench press
Strength vs. Power
Power Power is a force developed
quickly and combines strength and speed.
Power = strength *speed EX.- depth jump, hardle
jump Power training requires
fast motion to be effective.
Power assessment is done in two ways:
Power assessment
Manual Instrumental
Manual muscle testing is a procedure for the
evaluation of the function and strength of individual muscle and muscle groups based on effective performance of movement in relation to the force of gravity and manual resistance.
1. Manual muscle testing
To determine the extent and degree of muscular
weakness resulting from disease, injury or disuse.
The records obtained from these tests provide a base for planning therapeutic procedures and periodic re-testing.
Muscle testing is an imp tool for all members of the rehabilitation team.
Uses
Contraindications and precautions
contraindications
Pain
Inflammation
Cardiac or respiratory
disease
Pts. With history at risk of having
cardiovascular problems. Abdominal surgery or herniation of abdominal
wall to avoid stress on the abdominal wall. Fatigue exacerbate the pt’s condition.
patient with extreme debility, for ex. Malnutrition, malignancy and severe COPD.
Extra care must be taken where resisted movements might aggravate the
condition

1. Evidence of muscle contraction: Grade 0: no palpable or observable muscle contractionGrade1: palpable or observable muscle contraction and no joint motion.2. Gravity as a resistance: Grade2: gravity eliminated movementGrade3: against gravity3. Amount of manual resistance: Grade4: full ROM against gravity and against moderate manual resistance Grade5: maximal resistance

Reliability
.
Instrument choosen to assess muscle strength
depends on the degree of accuracy required in the measurement.
Instrumentation
Hand held dynamomet
erFree weight Cable
tensiometer Pinch gauge
Hand held dynamometer
Device operate on principle of compression.
Application of external force to the dynamometer compress a steel spring and moves a pointer.
. Dynamometer
measures strength of elbow
flexors
Dynamometer measures strength of dorsiflexors
Dynamometer measures
strength of wrist flexors
.
Lateral pinch strength
measurement using pinch
dynamometer
Cable tensiometer
Force during knee extension increased force on cable depresses a riser over which cable passes , this deflects the pointer and indicates amount of force applied
To test 1RM for single or multiple muscle groups
choose the initial weight close to the below maximum lifting capacity.
Weight is progressively added on subsequent attempts until the person reaches max. lift capacity. The weight increments between 1to5 kg depending on the muscle group evaluated.
Dividing the 1RM score by body weight assesses the relative muscular strength.
1RM / Body weight
Assess 1RM of muscles for bench press and leg press
