The Winter 2012 edition of the Archaeological Society of South Carolina's Charleston Chapter newsletterTRANSCRIPT
NEWSLETTER
Hello everyone,
Spring and warmer weather is just around the corner and the Charleston
Chapter is gearing up for our first volunteer dig of the year! The Chapter will once
again be partnering with South Carolina State Parks to continue excavations at
Hampton Plantation. Excavations will take place Saturday May 5th and Sunday May
6th. Unfortunately the Baruch Institute is booked for the month of May and we will
be unable to provide housing for this weekend. We encourage volunteers to carpool
from Charleston. More details about the volunteer dig will be sent soon via email,
keep a look out!
In other news, officers for 2012 have been elected. I have gladly assumed the
role of president and Dr. Dee Dee Joyce will now serve as vice president. We are also
happy to welcome Larry James, archaeologist at Colonial Dorchester, as our newest
board member. This new slate of officers will be working hard to plan an exciting,
event filled year for the chapter.
Finally, as president I would like to make a special request that everyone
consider donating to ASSC’s grant-in-aid program, which provides assistance for
graduate research in South Carolina archaeology. More details about the program
and how to donate can be found on page four.
Best,
Rebecca Shepherd
From the president...

Dig into history at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. Discover how archaeolo-
gists see beyond written records and learn about past cultures based on artifacts left be-
hind. Visit us for “Piecing Together the Past with Archaeology” for a first hand look at
Charles Towne Landing’s archaeological resources. Meet Charles Towne Landing’s ar-
chaeologists and tour dig sites where Native American and colonial finds have been un-
earthed. Some of the hands-on activities you don’t want to miss: a pottery re-fit (an ar-
chaeology puzzle), dig boxes and a scavenger hunt. Sign-up for a behind the scenes tour
of the archaeology lab to learn more about archaeology beyond the dig. Join us to discov-

The Charleston Museum Curator Lecture Series Archaeology of the Redan at South Adger's Wharf Charleston is the only walled city in British colonial North America. Yet this defensive
feature, completed in 1706, is largely invisible, in both the landscape and the imagina-
tion. Excavations done in 2008 and 2009 of the redan, or salient angle, at Tradd Street
provided the first opportunity in forty years to explore a section of the wall, and the first
in nearly a century to expose the foundation. Join the Museum's Curator of Historical
Archaeology, Martha Zierden, to hear new details on construction, maintenance, and
eventual abandonment of the city's early colonial defenses and see several items that will
go on permanent exhibit in the museum’s Lowcountry History Hall.
When: Tuesday April 17th, 2012, 6:30 pm
Where: The Charleston Museum

Archaeological Society of South
Carolina Graduate Student Grant-
in-Aid Pledge Drive
Help support South Carolina Archaeology by donating to the ASSC Grant-in-Aid
Program!
The goal of the Grant-in-Aid Program is to award funds ranging from several
hundred to one thousand dollars to graduate students researching topics pertain-
ing to South Carolina archaeology. Donations to the Grant-in-Aid Program pro-
mote research that advances our knowledge of the history and prehistory of South
Carolina and of the United States. To date, this program has assisted the research
of more than 40 students and has been instrumental in allowing a number of ar-
chaeologists to move on and become respected members of the academic and ap-
plied archaeology professions.
Suggested donation amounts start around $25 from individuals and $100 from or-
ganizations and businesses. However, no contribution is too small, and all are tax
deductible. Contributions to the Grant-in-Aid fund will be acknowledged in the
Society's newsletter and on the ASSC’s website, unless contributors prefer to re-
main anonymous.
Please make contributions before April 10, 2012 to support this year’s Grant-in-
Aid recipients. Donations can be made via PayPal by using the link on our web-
site: http://www.assc.net/grant-in-aid/call-for-donations
Thank you in advance for your support of this important program!
