Havewebeenteachingourchildrentheimportanceofgreetingeachotherwith

salaam?Orwhenweseethemofftoschool,dowesendthemoffwitha'bye',

insteadof"As-SalaamuAlaikum",theduaforpeaceandblessings?

Forsomeofus,thismayseemaminorissue.Oritmayevenbea'progressive'

issue.But,inourhasteto'adapt',weforgetthatsaying"As-SalaamuAlaikum"

isthebestgreetingtherecouldeverbe.

ThiswasthepracticeandteachingofProphetMuhammad(SalAllaahuAlaihiwa

Sallam),thebestexampleformankind.AnditwasAllaahHimselfthatprescribed

themannerofgreetingamongMuslimsas"As-SalaamuAlaikum"[not'salaams'

or'goodmorning'or'hey'or'hi'orwhatever]

"WhenthosewhobelieveinOurAyaat(proofs,verses,signs,etc.)cometoyou,

say:"SalaamunAlaikum"(peacebeonyou)....."(Surahal-An'aam:54)

Ibnal-Qayyimsays:

"Allaah,theSovereign,theMostHoly,thePeace,prescribedthatthegreeting

amongthepeopleofIslamshouldbe'As-SalaamuAlaikum',whichisbetter

thanallthegreetingsofothernationswhichincludeimpossibleideasorlies,

suchassaying,'Mayyouliveforathousandyears,'orthingsthatarenot

accurate,suchas'An'imsabaahan(Goodmorning),'oractionsthatarenotright,

suchasbowingingreeting.Thusthegreetingofsalaamisbetterthanallof

these,becauseithasthemeaningofsafetywhichislife,withoutwhichnothing

elsecanbeachieved...."(Badaa'i'al-Fawaa'id)

means:"Noharmshallcometoyoufromme(maynoevilcometoyou,mayno

harmcometoyou)

AndsinceAs-SalaamisalsooneoftheBeautifulNamesofAllah,thegreetingof

salaamalsomeans,"MaytheblessingofHisNamedescenduponyou,may

Yet,itisutterlytragictoseethatsomeofushaveexchangedsomethingso

beautifulforsomethingugly,whenwestoppedsayingAssalaamuAlaikumand

startedwith'GoodMorning'or'Hi'.Itisespeciallysadtoseesomeofouryouth,

whodon'tevenknowhowtosaythewordsclearlyandproperly.Somesay'Saa

kum",somejustmumblesomethingincomprehensibleundertheirbreathand

somedon'tevenbothertosayanythingatall!Andiftheyarebeingreallyniceto

you,theyjustmightthrowyoua'hey'fromafar.

Andeventhoseofuswhodosaysalaam,someofusaresostingyorhesitantin

doingso.Although,atthetimeoftheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)the

Sahaabahwouldcompetewitheachothertoseewhocouldgivesalaamsfirst.

Theywouldgotothemarketjusttosaysalaamtopeopletheyknewandtothe

peopletheydidnotknow.

TheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)said:"Thebestofthetwopersonsis

theonewhobeginswithsalaam."(Relatedbyan-Nawawi)

BENEFITSOF"AS-SALAAMUALAIKUM"

1."As-SalaamuAlaikum"isameansofimmensereward

AmanpassedbytheMessengerofAllaah(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)while

hewassittingwithothers,andsaid"As-salaamu'alaykum."TheProphet(Sal

AllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)said,"[Hewillhave]tenhasanaat."Anotherman

passedbyandsaid"As-SalaamuAlaikumwaRahmatullaah(peacebeuponyou

andthemercyofAllaah).."TheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)said,"[He

willhave]twentyhasanaat."Anothermanpassedbyandsaid"As-Salaamu

AlaikumwaRahmatullaahiwaBarakaatuh(peacebeuponyouandthemercyof

AllaahandHisblessings)."TheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)said,"[He

willhave]thirtyhasanaat."

2."As-SalaamuAlaikum"isanaspectofImaan

OnceamanaskedtheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)aboutwhich

aspectofIslamwasbest.TheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)replied:

"Feedingthehungry,andsayingsalaamtothoseyouknowandthoseyoudon't

know."(BukhaariandMuslim)

3."As-SalaamuAlaikum"isameansofenteringJannah

TheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)said:"YouwillnotenterParadise

untilyoubelieve,andyouwillnotbelieveuntilyouloveoneanother.ShallInot

tellyouaboutsomethingwhich,ifyoudoit,youwillloveoneanother?Spread

salaam(thegreetingofpeace)amongyou."(Muslim)

4."As-SalaamuAlaikum"getsridofsins

TheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)alsosaid,"WhentwoMuslimsmeet

(givesalaam),andshakehands,theyareforgiventheirsinsbeforetheypart(with

eachother)."(AbuDawud)

5."As-SalaamuAlaikum"isthegreetingofthepeopleofJannah

"Then,thosethatfearedtheirLordshallbedrivenincompaniesintoParadise.

Whentheydrawnearitsgateswillbeopened,anditskeeperswillsaytothem:

"Salaamun'Alaikum"(Peacebeuponyou),youhavedonewell.Enterandlivein

6.EvenAllahsays"As-SalaamuAlaikum"

AllahsendsHisSalaamuponthepeoplewhobelieveinHim,especiallythe

prophetssuchasNuh,Ibraheem,Ismaeel,Musa,etc.(Surahas-Saaffaat)as

wellasotherpiouspeople.

JibreelcametohouseoftheProphet(salAllahualayhiwasallam)andKhadeeja

wasthere.Jibreelsaid:"AllahsendshissalaamtoKhadeeja."TheProphet(sal

Allahualayhiwasallam)said:"OKhadeeja,AllahissendingHissalaamsto

you."Shesaid,"AllahisAs-Salaam.AnduponyouOJibreel,beas-salaamand

uponyouRasulullahbeas-salaam."[Bukhaari]

Itisobligatorytoreturnthegreetingof"As-SalaamuAlaikum"

"TheMuslimhasfiverightsoverhisfellow-Muslim:heshouldreturnhissalaams,

visithimwhenheissick,attendhisfuneral,accepthisinvitation,andprayfor

mercyforhim[say"Yarha'mukallaah"]whenhesneezes."(Bukhaari,Muslim)

Weshouldsay"As-SalaamuAlaikum"whenweenterourhomes

"Whenyouenterhouses,greet(withpeace)oneanotherwithasalutationfrom

Allah,blessedandgood.AssuchAllahmakescleartoyouHisversessothat

youunderstand."(Surahan-Nur:61)

"As-SalaamuAlaikum"isalsotobesaidattimeofleaving

TheProphet(SalAllaahuAlaihiwaSallam)said:"Whenoneofyoujoinsa

gathering,heshouldgreetthosepresent;andwhenheleavesthemheshould

salutethem,becausethefirstsalutationisnotbetterthanthelastone."(Abu

DawudandTirmidi)
