Whether your summer rental is for two weeks or two months, putting your own personal stamp on this temporary haven

can help make a great vacation even better.

For some advice, we turned to three interior designers to share their design sense.

Clear out the Clutter. If the plastic flowers, sea shell art, knick knacks and more aren’t to your liking, pack them up and put them out of sight until your rental days are over. “On vacation, the space you inhabit should impart feelings of calmness and pleasure,” says Judith Chirico, ASID, owner of Interior Design Directions, LLC in Monmouth Junction. “Too much ‘stuff,’ especially when it’s someone else’s taste, can be a real distraction.”

rearrange the furniture.“The way the furniture works in the space should suit the needs of you and your family,” says Beth Insabella Walsh, ASID, owner of Insabella Design in Red Bank. “Don’t be shy about changing things around.” Possibilities to consider: creating a more conversational grouping in the living room; a bedroom dresser that might function better as a dining area side board; chairs can be transferred from one room to another; porch/patio seating can be rearranged or supplemented to accommodate more people; lamps can be relocated to provide better reading or task lighting.

Supplement the exiSting furniture. If it’s a full season rental, adding small furniture pieces like an end table, a small chest of drawers, a storage trunk, or a rocking chair can increase the comfort quotient. These don’t have to be fine furniture pieces. Consider new, but inexpensive, pieces. Garage-sale finds (from your garage or someone else’s) are great venues for letting your inner artist come alive. A coat of white paint and interesting hardware or whimsical summer colors can turn the bland or ugly items into conversation pieces.

upgrade what’S underfoot.Floors are generally wood or tile. An inexpensive indoor/outdoor area rug can add a punch of color. If there’s wall-to-wall carpeting that’s not to your liking, scatter small area rugs around (at the door, under the coffee table, by the bedside) to distract the eye.

perk up the upholStery.Layers of color can add your personality to the rooms. “One size fits…” slipcovers are surprisingly inexpensive and an easy way to convert furniture that is either drab or just not-quite-to-your-taste into something surprisingly chic. Even if the existing upholstery is fine, the fabric itself is often generic. Throw pillows in bright, summery colors and a coordinating afghan or two will work wonders.

let in the light. If the landlord hasn’t done it to your satisfaction, make cleaning the mirrors and windows a priority. If there are heavy curtains at the windows, pull them back out of the way. If privacy is an issue, add sheers on a tension rod.

SUMMERWritten by Anne Marie Soto

Rentals

12 AUGUST 2011

Page 15: ASPIRE Metro | 2011 August

Remember to keep a running inventory of what you’ve contributed to the rental so that, when the vacation is over, nothing is left behind.

InvIte Mother nature InsIde.“Right from when you walk in the front door, things should look fresh and bright,” says Ria Gulian, ASID, owner of Interior Design by Ria in Oceanport, “with a visual connection to the outdoors.” She advises bringing in some greenery but, unless you’re going to be there full time, you may want to avoid live plants. Reeds and organic palms are a good substitute. If the local farm stand carries fresh flowers, add them to your shopping cart.

entertaInMent tonIght? If you plan to entertain, be sure your rental is well stocked with the requisite dishware and utensils and the appropriate serving pieces — all of the unbreakable variety.

add your own beddIng.Regardless of what is supplied, importing your own pillows, blankets and sheets can make a rental feel much more like a cozy home-away-from-home. This might be the time to break out and indulge in some brightly colored sheets and pillowcases . . . or go all white for a cool, crisp look.

The Furniture Market at High Point, NC, is the largest furniture industry trade show in the world. Home to more than 2,000 exhibitors from 106 countries and 80,000 attendees every six months, this event is the place to spot new trends, exciting finishes and styling and an excellent way to take the temperature of the economy as it relates to design.

I sat down with the principals of three prominent New Jersey design showrooms, each of whom attended the Spring Market in April, to find out whether this Market ran 98 degrees or 5 below on the design thermometer...

*business profilethe O W nE RNina Karamallis, the owner of British Home Emporium, has been an interior designer for over 25 years. Her broad range of expertise includes residential interiors in New Jersey, visual merchandising and editorial photo styling. Her sensibility marries traditional elegance with European country style and contemporary design.

the S T oR EBritish Home Emporium:Located at 91 Main Street in Madison, is one of the premier furniture and interior design stores in New Jersey. The store is an amazing two-level, 7,000 square foot restored livery stable filled with custom-crafted furniture, beautiful chandeliers, fireplace surrounds, original art, rich leather, hand-loomed rugs, beautiful bed linens, fine dinnerware and fabulous accessories. The staff includes four interior designers, an interior architect who manages the custom woodworking division and a support staff dedicated to exceptional customer service and personal attention.

Nina and George Karamallis

Did the show have a particular focus this year? The focus was a combination of updated to modern styling with a continued emphasis on reclaimed wood looks and lighter fabrics and finishes, in antique inspired, industrial and contemporary styles. This focus has continued to grow, but there is a strong sense that it is going to peak soon and is an overreaction to the position that Restoration Hardware has taken, and a desire to compete with their success. A couple of key resources and factories in China are producing all the “Belgian” antique looks as well as upholstery that Restoration Hardware carries and everyone else is trying to fill the void.

What are the latest TRENDS to come out of the market and what was your favorite and why?The latest trend is a continued emphasis on light and solid fabrics, but a return to color is very visible. Many upholstery resources are showing Forest Green Velvets, and pattern influences are animal prints and Middle Eastern, with Zebra in classic b/w and neutral colors EVERYWHERE! Ikats, Suzanis and other Middle Eastern fabrics and Moroccan designs are strong both in color and neutral interpretations. My favorites are Jamie Young for accessories, and John Robshaw for textiles. Hickory Chair and Lee Industries are dominating as fashion leaders in the field with strong presentations and surging attendance at showrooms.

Was there a specific item that you were intent on finding? No, we were looking for all the things we need to round things out, some great new upholstery frames that we hope will be something unique for our market. We purchased a diverse assortment of case goods, and those are already rolling in!

16 AUGUST 2011

Page 19: ASPIRE Metro | 2011 August

What was your experience like at this year’s show?Market is always a time to try and absorb as much as possible in a short period of time.

What are the latest TRENDS to come out of the market and what was your favorite and why?It was nice to see many of the manufacturers having new collections and introductions. I particularly liked Baker’s Michael S. Smith Collection

and Stately Home Introductions, as well as Council’s Art Deco pieces which mix in today’s traditional to modern decor, and their April 2010 introductions of fine walnut productions of English, French, Italian and Russian influence. Another favorite was Henkel Harris’ demilune chest with mahogany and cherry crotch inlays; Hickory Chair’s Alexa Hampton collection is gracious, classic and comfortable. Harden’s solid cherry transitional bedroom pieces and buffet/bar/TV unit are designed with clean lines and versatility. New finishes and hardware expands their many options. These manufacturers are all fine examples of exceptional American Craftsmanship. Furniture to be passed down for generations.

Did you attend with specific jobs/customers in mind? And if so, did you find the specific piece that you were looking for? When you attend the High Point Market you go with an open mind, and you are always thinking about what new collections or pieces would freshen up the showroom floor. It is important to maintain a good merchandising mix with interesting and unusual occasional items such as small tables and accent pieces that customers won’t see in every store. Customers like to take these items with them for instant gratification. Market also showcases what colors and fabrics will be trending for the season. Market is also a good time to see pieces that you would not typically stock on the floor. Our customers are always looking to our designers and me to find that special piece of furniture that set their room apart. What role do you think the Internet plays in the design industry? The Internet has given consumers the ability to research products at their leisure, making them more knowledgeable, informed, and better prepared before they enter our store. However consumers still seek the knowledge and guidance of a professional Sales Person or Interior Designer. Seeing product first hand is still important. It enables consumers to make their final decisions based on seeing the quality, finish, fabric, etc. in person.

Did you write business for your showroom and/or particular clients? We wrote a lot of business at the show primarily for the shop, but I am always looking for specific items for clients and was successful in finding items to fill my needs. For the store we were looking for new art and accessory sources – more transitional. I look for items for all my design team and listen carefully to their clients’ needs as well.

How would you describe your choices? Contemporary, Traditional, Transitional? We found great new resources. Our business is increasingly transitional, with a wonderful mix of old and new.

*business profilethe V pAlexis Schwartz is Vice President of the family-owned Schwartz Design Showroom. Alexis works side-by-side with her mother, owner Susette Schwartz, and is responsible for staying on top of trends, sourcing new manufacturers and increasing the Showroom’s reach. She’s especially interested in textures and color, and continually draws on her nine years’ experience as the Director of Global Marketing - Color for Bobbi Brown cosmetics.

the S T oR ESchwartz Design Showroom: New Jersey’s only interior design showroom exclusively for the trade, Schwartz Design Showroom provides fine furniture, lighting, decorative accessories, and rugs to interior designers and architects. Featuring full lines of home goods from the industry’s most sought after vendors, Schwartz is a complete resource for professionals looking for interior design solutions.

What was your experience like at this year’s show? I’m always amazed by the sheer size of High Point, and this year it seemed to get even bigger. I love the camaraderie every year. When you attend as a small business owner, your world opens up and you become connected to such a large, talented group of people who are willing to share ideas, talk shop, and of course have some fun!

Can you describe the general mood? Everyone from market attendees to the manufacturers was in excellent spirits. I think many of us finally felt like the tides were turning in terms of the economy. We’ve been seeing more and more people become interested in making their homes and workspaces beautiful again, and it’s reignited quite a spark in the design industry. You could really feel the energy.

What are the latest TRENDS to come out of the market and what did you gravitate to?There was a huge push towards bold colors and prints. The juxtaposition of these bright “pops”against the greys that we have seen over the past year was a breath of fresh air! Suzanne Kasler’s collection for Hickory Chair epitomizes the combination of this. Her relaxed grey linen paired with bold prints or pops of color is truly inspiring - and fun. I also found Taylor King to be extraordinary. It’s an American-made company, and their product development and fabric trend teams are amazing. They source the most intricate, spectacular fashion forward textiles out there!

Do you go with any style bias? Contemporary, Traditional, Transitional?Transitional design has dominated the industry for the past couple of years. There was a definite sense that lines are softening and that traditional pieces are working into projects.

Was there a specific item that you were intent on finding in order to “corner the market?” No, we keep ourselves open to sourcing anything that is new and exciting.

What role do you think the internet plays in the design industry? When any new technology enters the market, people are afraid to embrace it and think it will take away the human element to what they do. I think the design industry has struggled even more to figure out its role in the online space, since it enables people to go to the furniture source faster and easier. However, an interior designer does so much more than just “buy furniture.“ An interior designer selects furnishings, floor coverings, accessories, window treatments and lighting and coordinates color, texture and finishes to create a unique, signature space that embodies the aspirations of his/her clients. I think the Internet in a way has helped people realize all that designers do. There’s so much out there that it’s made many people realize they need a professional designer to help them sort through, coordinate and make a space their own.

Click. That’s the sound of Savraj Singh Dhanjal, founder of Wattvision, turning off a light switch in Pennington, NJ. A few seconds later, the iPhone screen we’re watching registers the change. It shows that the house we’re in is now using 70 less watts of energy, and we’ve just saved two cents per hour.

And really, that is all it takes. Research shows that when people can see exactly how much electricity they are using, they almost always use less.

“The only way to improve something is to measure it,” explains Dhanjal.

Energy metering systems like this are still relatively novel, but Dhanjal envisions a future in which every single building in the world will have one. And he hopes Wattvision will lead the way.

Dhanjal, age 30, graduated from Princeton University in 2003 with a degree in computer science. He worked for Microsoft for a few years, but then decided to work for himself. His idea to build energy monitors came in 2008 after he asked his father a few questions about their family’s home energy use. Dhanjal’s father, an aerospace engineer for Lockheed Martin, didn’t know the answers.

Dhanjal recalls his dad saying “Well, the energy bill varies between $300 and $600.” This inspired Dhanjal to search the Internet for home energy monitors. He discovered that nothing on the market provided exactly what he wanted: real-time energy data on a smart phone or computer, in a package that could be set up easily.

“There were a couple products out there that kind of did what I

wanted, but they were really hard to install,” Dhanjal says. “You had to have an electrician. If you tried to install it yourself, you were risking death.”

Not satisfied with that option, Dhanjal decided to build his own energy metering system from scratch. The project would require both hardware design and software design. Fortunately, these skills were already in the family. Dhanjal programmed the software interface, while his father helped build Wattvision’s patented energy sensor. The Wattvision prototype was completed in the family’s Central Jersey basement.

The first time Dhanjal turned on the system, he was afraid something must be wrong. His parent’s home was registering an energy use of 1,500 watts — a high number — but it was a quiet day in the house. Eventually, he figured out the system was working fine. The problem was, just from being plugged in, “vampire electronics” were sucking up energy. “We went around the house unplugging things,” Dhanjal says. “We were able to cut our energy use in half.”

Now, nearly three years later, the Wattvision sensor is ready for primetime. It’s available for purchase from wattvision.com. Although, not the only home energy meter on the market,

Dhanjal believes it is the easiest to install and offers the best results. Wattvision is still headquartered in Dhanjal’s parent’s basement,

and he’s still the only full-time employee. But he already has a few angel investors lined up in California, and has been talking to venture capitalists. In hopes of taking the company to the next level, he is considering moving Wattvision to Silicon Valley.

The product. At Microsoft, Dhanjal’s job was to make sure that users of Word 2007 had the best experience possible. Now, he is concentrating on the same goal for Wattvision.

When Dhanjal shows me how to install the Wattvision sensor over a home’s standard electricity meter, it does, in fact, look incredibly easy to do. Dhanjal, of course, has had plenty of chances to practice. For a second opinion, I consult Ted Borer, energy plant manager at Princeton University. Borer uses Wattvision in his own home.

Was it easy to install? “I could have had my ten year old set it up,” Borer reports. What Borer likes best about Wattvision is the real-time energy data, which is updated through his

home’s wireless Internet network every 15 seconds. He has tested the system and found it to be highly accurate. “For $250, this instrumentation is much, much better than I would expect,” he says.

Dhanjal knows that good software will be just as crucial to his product’s success as good hardware. That is why Wattvision aims to be more than just an energy monitoring system. It wants to make saving electricity an interesting activity — by pitting neighbor against neighbor on the Internet.

In the world of Wattvision, homes that use less energy than average have green roofs and homes that use more energy than average have red roofs. By logging onto wattvision.com, users can snoop around and see how much electricity their Wattvision-equipped friends are using. It’s kind of like Facebook for your energy meter.

“A lot of research has shown that the best actions come from your own competitiveness, your own innate desire to see where you stand among your peers,” Dhanjal says. “The social aspect is a big part of what we’re building.”

Dhanjal says about two-thirds of current Wattvision users choose to share their energy data. Keeping this data totally private is also an option.

Dhanjal plans to continue to build functionality into the system. Currently, Wattvision can send you a warning via text message if your energy use spikes. In the future, Wattvision will be smart enough to make helpful energy saving suggestions. And this is just the beginning. “I can’t imagine a future where we don’t have this technology,” he says. “I can’t imagine a future where we don’t know, ‘Hey, this is our impact on the environment at this moment right now.’”

WHAT ARE THEY? Illuminated PaintingsAbstract Expressionist Peter Bynum, creates his organic paintings by using acrylics on multiple layers of tempered glass that are then lit from behind by flat-panel LEDs. Illuminating the total surface area of the glass between the spaces allow the rich, deep colors of each layer to come alive and mesmerize. The light is controlled by a dimmer system so the viewer may adjust the intensity to his/her liking, creating a unique collaborative experience. The glass panels are held in place by a special bracketing system and can be placed at various distances, ranging from almost touching to up to one inch apart from one another. The number of panels of glass in each piece can vary from two to ten panels. On the practical side, Bynum notes he uses tempered glass because it is very durable and almost impossible to break. Bynum also noted that the LED lights provide a pure white light, with no heat, which is evenly distributed throughout the painting and are maintenance free. If the lights were never turned off, they would still last for twelve years.

The size of his pieces can vary from 28” x 28” to 6’ x 8’.

Influenced by a NYC Jamba Juice window display, Beldock visualized the idea for the ‘sticky’ sheer or opaque 24”x 24” plastic squares with photo transfers to press upon wall surfaces – enhancing the wall color or raw material to show through – creating a subtle sense of depth. The photographs or images are varied, including patterns of diamonds, bricks, geometrics, landscapes and skins to name a few. The results are sophisticated designs that are a bit more vibrant than traditional wallpaper. The product is durable, easy to clean and Eco-friendly. L U X U R YWHAT ARE THEY? Faux Finishes and Murals Artist Nina Helms says, “I love creating beauty for people to live with.” To achieve this, she creates intriguing and beautiful bas-relief sculptures. “A piece can be created to look like hand carved plaster, metal, or even translucent colorful glass. Traditional floral elements and contemporary motifs, often taken from fabrics, are sculpted and applied to grace flat and curved walls, stairwells, ceilings and doors of a room.” Helms, sculpts her designs in clay until the desired effect is achieved. Then she carefully duplicates the design completely in perfect detail. The dimensions of her pieces can be quite large. Examples of her work are flowers on walls that are probably four to six feet tall. Her work may be reminiscent of Wedgewood China or of a more whimsical nature. Basically she can meet any of her client’s specifications and create custom sculptures, busts, even nude figures. “If they can think it, I can do it.”

WHAT IS IT? TRiCCTM utility coverA hard cover, disguised like a beautiful bush, that camouflages and protects your utility equipment year round. Inventor and entrepreneur Tammy Reilly and her brother/partner Charles (Chuck) Copeland focus on discovering, developing and commercializing products that innovate and address efficiency, comfort and appearance in the home and work environments. The company uses recycled raw materials whenever available to help address the challenges facing our global environment. TRiCC utility cover is made from 100% recycled high density polyethylene plastic, making at least 50% of the product environmentally friendly.

Necessity is The Mother of Invention

“Chuck and I were sitting around talking one hot evening several years ago. I shared that I turned my a/c unit on that night, before removing the vinyl cover and hoped I hadn’t damaged the unit. We lamented that someone hadn’t yet come up with a better way, to conceal unattractive utility equipment in the yard. Within weeks of that discussion, my brother had a dream about how to build a cover that would disguise it beautifully and as important, allow the homeowner to leave it on year-round. Having dreamt this many more times over the next few months, he finally called me to discuss it saying ‘I keep having this dream about building this equipment cover that looks like a bush and something is telling me that I need to do this, do you want to do this with me?’”

TRiCC utility cover premiered at the National Hardware Show in May 2011. Out of all of the thousands of products on display they’re proud to have won the Retailers’ Choice Award. (Only 30 products were chosen for this award and TRiCC utility cover was among them.)

The love of restoration seems to just be something that is in the blood. The same visionary who bought and restored this home also restores classic cars; it all speaks to that lifestyle – of wanting to re-establish something from a place in time we can only touch through its effects.

Imagine the exhilaration of unearthing pieces of history in your newly purchased home – not just here and there, but all throughout. In the gaze of the untrained eye, things such as the original, inscribed coal-burning oven in the kitchen may be overlooked and wind up in the dumpster; the original floor-to-ceiling mahogany doors, the hinges for which alone weigh ten pounds each, may have also been discarded, had the man not been able to see the luster under the dust that had accumulated over at least 40 years in the basement. It takes a certain type of person to advocate for his own home when designers and various contractors do not always see the innate beauty and perfection of craftsmanship in the original design.

The wherewithal to take on such a massive project has everything to do with that innate drive within the man, which is reinforced by his occupation – creating high-end hospitality accommodations. It was his 30 years’ experiences in the field that gave him the unique ability to bring together an extraordinary team that would take on his challenges – not simply replacing, but recreating.

IntricacyLook up twelve feet and marvel at the intricate, chestnut tray ceilings. Before any worker would make even a single cut or stroke, the man himself, went through bin after bin to match the chestnut as closely as possible. Recreating the exact design when adding the garage and office extension, required forging 80 different blades specifically designed to make the proper cuts. The highly skilled, diverse team of workers then spent countless hours staining the oak to match the original chestnut, no longer available. The end result is a seamless transition of old into new that the untrained eye would never detect. The office extends the home over the new garage via a breezeway that has doors on either side offering access to the front and back porches simultaneously creating a social aspect for summer parties.

Authenticity One must marvel on birds of a feather and how, not only do they flock together, but have a scrutinizing eye with which they survey every aspect of a nest. The Clause Brothers are “old world guys who pilot their own planes.” And the original slate on top of the house, well, that is old world too. Unfortunately, there was not enough of it in pristine shape to use on the whole roof. The brothers literally took to the sky. They flew over parts of the East Coast until they finally located an old barn in Pennsylvania with a roof that was as close as one could get to a perfect match. After purchasing the roof of the barn, exacting men, such as these, could not be satisfied simply slapping plates where needed. They replaced and blended them with the existing plates to create a cohesive look.

Every decision of this project was informed by the original plans and countless volumes of magazines and style books on the period, down to the actual stonework found on the lower level mined from the same quarries as Manhattan brownstones dating back 200 years. When a decision was made that deviated from those plans, it was in the greater interest of insuring the overall solvency of the house for another 150 years. GrandeurReplacing wooden support beams with steel, installing an elevator, and opting for brand new windows over the originals – except for the original stained glass showpieces on each staircase landing – are just some of those decisions. The inside entry doors also have original stained glass inset rumored to be Tiffany glass.

The sense of grandeur of the Victorian era starts on the circular drive which is overhung by the original porte-cochere. The man kept the feature in its fundamental form because, “we wanted to feel that dimension… that you could envision a horse and carriage pulling up – that feeling of the original house.” Where modern dictates call for great slabs of granite, the owner defers to the preferences of the period, white statuary marble. That marble is donned in all of the usual work surface areas – the kitchen and bathrooms. In the kitchen, it is slathered across the expansive countertops and large center island, before extending into the refurbished Quaker Missionary-style butler’s pantry.

When considering what to do with the back yard, again the man went for the modern touch, but maintained the same style and materials found in the main house, bringing the same marble into the cabana that sits at the far end of the undulating yard. Yet another unique treasure of the home is the tennis court that has been grandfathered in, and sits alongside the in-ground pool with waterfall – all in the midst of diverse specimen trees and mature plantings.

In speaking with the man about the incredible amount of work that went into research, planning, and execution, it seems inevitable that the house would be listed as an historic home. *Surprisingly, there is no sort of historic home registry in Englewood. However, the Englewood Historical Society is trying to amend this sad reality, so the pure beauty and integrity of these homes and the work that men such as this do will be preserved and protected.

*Located 20 minutes from mid-town, Englewood has long been a destination for the well-heeled. A resort town in the early 1900’s, many homes were built as summer estates. It is the town where Gloria Swanson spent time at the sprawling “Gloria Crest.”

The expansive marble countertops and large center island extend into the refurbished Quaker Missionary-style butler’s pantry.

Riverwind, the spectacular turn-of-the-century landmark estate on the banks of the Navesink River in Middletown, oddly enough began its journey in Philadelphia at the Centennial International Exhibition of 1876, the first official World’s Fair in the United States. Most states built wooden structures that served as reception rooms for the state’s Centennial commissioners. After the exhibition, the house built for the state of Connecticut was moved in sections to Sea Bright, New Jersey, where it was enlarged by the distinguished New York architect Robert H. Robertson. After a 1913 hurricane eroded Sea Bright’s beaches, John A. Rutherford bought the house and floated it on three scows to his Navesink River Road property in Middletown. Riverwind’s sprawling main residence has grown larger and larger. Its most recent owners, the philanthropist Benjamin R. D’Onofrio (now deceased), and his partner of 52 years, Morgan E. Cline estimate it to be over 10,000 square feet. With the American flag flying from a tall, white flagpole, the windows and dormers shaded from the sun by blue canvas awnings, and its gargantuan covered porch bordered by boxwood and hydrangea, Riverwind’s exterior is reminiscent of those charming New England family compounds on Cape Cod. However, with over nineteen rooms, eleven fireplaces, eight bedrooms (each with a river view), eight full and three half baths, the elegant, luxurious, almost baronial interior is more Newport than New England. The grand, two-story, wood-paneled entry foyer with a fireplace and stunning double staircase is breathtaking, as is the wood-paneled great room and gallery with a soaring 25-foot coffered ceiling, and during the holidays, a Christmas tree nearly as tall. Morgan Cline described the process, “We have to put up scaffolding to trim the huge thing, just like at Rockefeller Center. It’s quite a production. It takes three people four days.” For over 30 years, Christmas at Riverwind, a festive, music-filled, annual holiday party, was legendary. Every year cocktails were followed by a musical interlude of live Christmas music and a sing along, which was then followed by a traditional ‘Christmas Feast’ with everything from roast turkeys and maple-glazed hams, to candied parsnips, barbequed black-eyed peas and an array of homemade cakes and pies.

On Riverwind’s main level there is the formal living room, dining room, great room, solarium and library, all with fireplaces and French doors that open out to the expansive covered porch on the river. Cline recalled with a smile, “Our favorite time, bar none, was sitting on the porch at sunset with the dogs and a martini. I actually think that other than Riverwind and the dogs, my partner’s greatest love of all was a good martini — straight up, three olives, no vermouth.” Mr. D’Onofrio and Mr. Cline have made significant contributions to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the Monmouth Medical Center, where its emergency department is named the Cline-D’Onofrio Emergency Services Pavilion in their honor. For years they have opened their riverfront estate to numerous charitable events including the American Heart Association’s Heart Ball and for 12 consecutive years, the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Ball. The Ball at Riverwind is ranked among the top ten American Cancer Society fund raising galas nationwide. With over 650 guests dressed to the nines, there is a cocktail reception, followed by dinner and dancing to a live band, all under an elaborate collection of huge white tents right on the river “With all the trees on the property lit from below, the array of tents glowing in the dark, a full moon sparkling on the river and the music playing into the night, it is really quite a glittering event,” Mr. Cline stated. Last year’s ball, which honored and celebrated the life and spirit of Mr. D’Onofrio drew over 700 people. Two gated entrances on 17 impeccably groomed, beautifully landscaped acres and a winding entry lined with stately sycamore trees, Cline and D’Onofrio’s beloved Riverwind is one of the few examples of a grand, turn-of-the-century, country estate still intact. Reflecting back to the day when estates were self supporting with livestock, produce from the garden and large staffs, there is also a farm house, carriage house, tact house, horse stalls and a four-car garage. Today Riverwind remains a glorious testament to gracious country living on a grand scale.

We love the look of houses closer to the coast, where the sun and sea air bleach shingles,” says

the homeowner, who is a builder of high-end estates. “But that won’t happen in our area – we don’t live near enough to the ocean.” So, in order to achieve this look instantly, he created a secret combination of gray pigment and a bleaching oil. After seeing this house, at least three other clients have requested new homes built with the signature weathered shingles that also evoke endless summers on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

He and his wife studied shingle-style architecture from the turn of the century (1890s into 1900s) and were committed to recreating the look of the classic American home. In fact, this builder was probably the first to do a true shingle-style home in Bergen County, back in the 1980s. Other details influenced by the Hamptons include a timeless cedar shingle roof, beautiful moldings and the quintessential blue hydrangeas.

“In keeping with a traditional Hampton’s house, there is nothing ornate about the moldings, but they really add to the character,” says the homeowner. He and his wife took a couple of years to lovingly choose every detail – including quarter-sawn red oak floors throughout, with radiant heat. The handpicked wood planks are from Vermont.

“Radiant heat is extremely efficient – it’s very inexpensive to heat this house. And a home this size would normally consume a lot of energy,” says the owner.

T h e P i n w h e e l E f f e c tThe couple, who have three children, wanted a home casual and comfortable enough for family life but with plenty of places for sophisticated entertaining, which they do a lot. They created something of a pinwheel, a residence that can spin from one color to the next, one style to the next. You could as easily host a cozy kids’ sleep over as a formal sit-down dinner for 10 – a buffet supper by the pool or a movie night in the private screening room. Even in the grounds and gardens, the colors spin and change through all four seasons. You’ll see daffodils and irises in spring; hundreds of boxwoods and hydrangeas star in the summer, just as they do on Hamptons estates. The property also has a working garden, with blueberries, raspberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs, mint and strawberries. “That’s the most fun for the kids,” says their mom.

This new dream house has an easy, breezy, fashionable air of seaside charm year-round, even

miles and miles from the water — because the savvy owners embraced all they know and love

about Hamptons’ living.

P o l i s h e d E n t e r t a i n i n g“I wanted to build this house as a showpiece,” says the owner. And he and his wife did not miss a detail. Pamper yourself and guests with an elegant swimming pool and patio, all-seasons hot tub, and outdoor cooking center with grill and refrigerator. The covered porch is wired for sound and TV.

The man cave is a dream come true for the guys, with two flat-screen TVs, a bar with Sub-Zero refrigerator drawers for cold brews and an elegant private bathroom. The wine cellar can hold about a thousand pours and has a well-appointed tasting room. The movie theatre has deep, plush seating for nine and a stunning marble counter [perfect for lining up popcorn and sodas] that is lit from underneath when you dim the house lights.

The kitchen boasts a big island, and a 72-inch round kitchen table with Lazy Susan. A Wolf six-burner gas range with grill, 1 1/2 ovens, and warming drawer to keep a dinner plate warm when someone is running late. The room is the perfect haven to make your own morning espresso or doppio, as this couple loves to do before parting ways for the day and heading out into the world. New York City is a quick ride away.

Roanokes

The landmark Georgian estate

Text by Henry Kuryla

The Morton and Grace Gordon Collection, one of the most celebrated private collections of Chinese porcelain and art in the world,

has always made its home at Roanokes.

Roanokes, the Gordon’s historic Georgian estate is one of Summit’s glorious crown jewels and one of this exclusive community’s most

distinguished landmark properties. Morton Gordon was a chemist who built a highly successful business importing pharmaceuticals from all over the world. China was one of his most important business partners. In the 1970s, when very few Americans had any real knowledge of, or interest in Chinese culture, the Gordon’s traveled to China on three occasions. They fell in love with the Chinese people, its culture and art. When they returned they quietly started collecting ceramics. Since relatively little Chinese art was available in America at that time, they enjoyed the thrill of the hunt and being the first to spot an importantpiece. As it turned out, they spotted many important pieces, which subsequently grew into an important, world-class collection. The stately, 18-room, 10,000-sq. ft. Georgian Colonial residence with eight bedrooms and five full baths, designed by New York architects Marsh and Gette, was built in 1910 for Phillip Van Renssalaer Van Wyck, a prominent New York lawyer. In 1951 the Gordons bought the handsome Georgian masterpiece from Adolf Root, president of the historic Roots Department Store in downtown Summit. They were taken with the spacious, perfectly proportioned rooms, the high ceilings, the extraordinary architectural detail and turn-of-the-century hand craftsmanship. It is doubtful that at the time, they could have known it would someday house one of the most famous, private collections of Chinese porcelain and art in the world. But it proved to be an ideal choice.

The grand entry foyer extending from the front to the back, opens into a large reception hall, with an adjacent receiving room to greet guests. The library, living/family room and the banquet-sized formal dining room, all branch off the reception hall. All have fireplaces and all feature intricate moldings, pocket doors and handcrafted, turn-of-the-century custom cabinetry. As their collection became more and more well known, museum directors, curators, artists, collectors and scholars came from all over the world to view and study the collection, staying for days or weeks at a time. With seven bedrooms, three with private baths, lush gardens, a heated pool and live-in servants tending to their every need, guests at Roanokes were well taken care of. This Georgian Estate, a timeless testimony to elegance and grace, built when craftsmanship and quality were highly valued commodities, is well poised to influence generations to come.

This past March, part of the Gordon’s ceramic collection consisting of 50 monochrome Chinese vessels dating to the third century B.C., were put up for auction at Christies. A celadon-glazed carved baluster vase (1736-1795) estimated to sell for $2-3 million, sold for a record $7.92 million, while the auction as a whole brought in a staggering $23 million.

I tis a remarkable home: a classic colonial dream that conjures visions of crisp New England autumns, warm apple pies, and quaint village greens.

Set on five majestic acres atop historic Bernardsville Mountain – one of the most prestigious addresses in the country – this five-bedroom, New England-style beauty also boasts a sparkling one-acre pond, complete with an antique rowboat. When the snow flies, you can lace up your skates and glide.

With its dove white exterior, deep forest green shutters and cottage red door, the home would fit perfectly well in Greenwich, CT, or in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard.

It’s exactly what owner Robb Francis Cuccia, a luxury sports car trader, went looking for about seven years ago. He wasn’t interested in trendy windows or what he calls an “in-your-face kind of look.” Rather, Cuccia wanted a home with understated, classic elegance. At the time, he was living in a 9,000-sq. ft. home in Bernardsville, but he wasn’t interested in buying a “flashy McMansion.”

Over the years, Cuccia, 47, had often driven past the crisp white colonial on Bernardsville’s Mountain Top Road. “I was always struck by how beautiful it was,” he says. “It was a home with great bones, a home that would look great 100 years from now.”

So when it went on the market, Cuccia jumped at the chance to purchase the property.

What he found, today looks like a picture postcard come to life. You approach the home through white picket gates, adorned with pillars topped by decorative acorns. You follow a cobblestone drive past a gathering of tall trees, which offer a green buffer from the street. And then you wind along a drive lined with white flowering Bradford pear trees. Subsequently, the white colonial appears, bordered by English-style gardens with two varieties of boxwoods.

Just beyond the house, you can see a sweeping green expanse of lawn and the sun glistening off the spring-fed pond.

Sure, at nearly 5,000-sq. ft., the home with beamed ceilings, intricate millwork, and gleaming wood floors is grand. It offers a swimming pool complex with a pool house and spa, surrounded by spacious decking that’s perfect for entertaining. The garage is large enough to house Cuccia’s classic collection of cars, like his 1962 E-type Jaguar and his 1955 100 M6 Austin Healey — plus two motorcycles.

But there is a fine sense of scale and proportion about this home, which is perfectly sited on a parcel that was once part of the old Roebling Estate.

The home’s architectural accents are not only beautiful, they are functional, not merely pasted on. The lanterns on the exterior are all solid brass. The half-round copper gutters run the full length of not just the main house, but also the pool house.

Built in 1978, the home had been renovated in 2000, but Cuccia also did major renovations in 2005-06, splurging on everything from the hand-split cedar roof to the gardens.

Nearly every room in the house offers inviting views of the great lawn, pond, pool complex and surrounding countryside. A gorgeous stone terrace runs the entire length of the rear of the house.

In the front-to-back living room, a classic fireplace gives the space an elegant, yet comfortable feel. In the spacious dining room, a gleaming French antique table with center pedestal takes center stage.

In the step-down family room, the home’s second fireplace is warm and inviting, as is the hand-rubbed, honey-hued coffered ceiling.

Cuccia particularly enjoys spending time in the state-of-the-art kitchen. The sunlit space features honed black granite countertops, along with a breakfast bar, a wet bar with copper sink, and a herringbone-patterned stone floor imported from France.

Through the large windows, Cuccia can enjoy views of the great lawn, pond and the charming pool house, crowned with a cupola and weather vein, echoing the front of main house. Around the pool, English boxwoods and peonies are the picture of an English garden.

Upstairs, the luxurious master bedroom suite features a bedchamber, sitting room, and spa-like bathroom with black-and-white mosaics and subway tile trimmed in black.

The private mahogany deck off the sitting room also offers views of the great lawn, pond and pool complex. Cuccia says it’s the perfect place to sip your morning coffee or unwind with an evening cocktail.

Cuccia says he hears people say they want a home that will make everyone know how rich they are, but he says that isn’t what this house is about.

“It’s about simplicity and elegance,” he says. “It’s about a house that never goes out of style.” That is why, years after Cuccia first admired this classic New-England style colonial, someone occasionally

leaves a note in his mailbox: If you’re ever interested in selling your home, please let me know.

A Shoestring and a Prayer broadway producer Roy Miller aims to see the surf light bounce back

Before a staffer could toss a stash of old boxes, Roy intercepted and unpacked a dusty box. He uncovered a strange-looking cardboard shoe done up with a faded red shoelace.

48 AUGUST 2011

Page 51: ASPIRE Metro | 2011 August

In a way, Roy Miller is what you’d expect of a successful Broadway producer: On the go, a little harried, more than a little driven.

But then, get him started on the Surflight Theatre and a note of calm wonderment comes over him. His voice drops to a lower, slower cadence and he reaches to define just what he means when he says magic and Surflight in the same breath.

The Surflight means a lot to a lot of people. Hundreds of theater pros got their start here. Thousands of summer folk on Long Beach Island became enchanted with the productions on the seaside stage. For 61 years, the Surflight has been giving audiences a thrill and kids as young as 14-year-old Roy Miller got their first chance on this stage. But that is not enough to describe the one-of-a-kind spell the Surflight can cast. Then, Miller hits on it.

“You know,” he says, “when you go out and walk on the beach at night and the tide recedes and leaves all the pebbles and salt and sand, it kind of sparkles.” Shards of seashell gleam. Reflections bounce from sky to ocean.

“That’s called surf light.”When he says it, you can see it and you know what he’s talking about:

Something so simple, so natural, yet also so supernatural – something magical.

At little of that magic came into play about a year ago. It was the summer of 2010; Miller took one of those phone calls – the kind that can change your life. It was from the board of directors at the Surflight: Times were tough and would he come talk to them? Miller had been on the board a decade prior: he knew you sometimes needed to call on friends and get some advice.

Miller was more than a friend. He was a Jersey-born kid and a Surflight alum. He’d worked the apprentice program as a boy just going into high school. He went on to bigger and better – considerably so. On Broadway, he is known for his revival of West Side Story (Tony nomination for Best Musical Revival and Grammy Award Winner for Best Musical Show Album) as well as for his production of The Drowsy Chaperone (winner of five 2006 Tony Awards, among other honors).

Long story short: Miller made the drive from Manhattan and two hours later, was in Long Beach – place of his childhood, place of his getaways from New York.

“When I got out of my car and breathed in that fabulous Long Beach air, I thought, hmmm …. “

He had no intention of getting involved in anything other than a conversation about helping the Surflight over a rough spot in the financial road.

That fall, he was signed on as producer of a nonprofit theater that was $4 million in debt and unable to pay its bills. It became clear to Miller it was going to take a Herculean effort to get the place to a point where it was just breaking even. He took the job as producer, the top job at the Surflight, and told the board – and the community -- he would donate his salary back to the theater if they would match it.

Miller intended to send a message: “I wanted people to know I have no agenda other than to help the theater.”

The community and theater supporters did more than that. The appeal brought in $350,000. Sounds like a lot. But that amount

simply got the Surflight out of immediate danger. What came next was an aggressive and transparent plan to deep-seated money troubles behind the Surflight.

Miller and the board launched another campaign and got serious about cutting costs. Staff was sliced to the bare minimum; a deal was made with the bank which gained the theater six months of breathing room on debt repayment. In February, the Surflight filed for bankruptcy protection – the board would have to come up with a plan to get the theater back on its feet, pay its debts and then keep going. They played it straight with the public – their public. They posted notices to the web site, answered Frequently Asked Questions, and described how they planned to pay the local vendors all that they were owed.

All of this is why Miller calls the past 10 months “a crazy, wild ride.”Believe him, he has had his moments. In February when the cold was

settled in and even the memory of a warm ocean breeze had faded to black, he had his “why am I doing this?” days.

But then came the counterbalance. Then came the day, a week before rehearsals for Rent were to begin when a staffer started cleaning up, getting ready to toss a stash of old boxes in the corner. “No, no, no,” said Miller, “Let me go through that stuff.”

He unpacked a dusty box, found a terrific photo of Surflight’s beloved founder Joseph Hayes and some other odds and ends – maybe from a commemorative dinner. Then he uncovered a strange-looking cardboard shoe done up with a faded red shoelace. “This is the shoestring Surflight started on,” the hand-lettering said.

It’s the kind of reminder Miller can’t get away from, the kind that underscores what it means to keep the theater from going dark.

“It took me back,” said Miller, who worked with Joe Hayes as a teen and knows that was key to his future. “There’s kind of a magic that gets imprinted in you, especially when you’re young … It took me back to those kids who are wide-eyed with dreams of making it big someday.”

Roy Miller hasn’t forgotten and he won’t turn his back on it. “This is crazy,” he sometimes says to himself. “I’m running this

place. Last time I was here, I was sweeping the floors.”Running the place, to Miller, means running it big time. He plans to

model the Surflight’s resurgence on the success of operations like the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Massachusetts. Michael Ritchie, another Surflight alum, made Williamstown hum. The secret, says Miller, was the steady stream of stars pulsing through the place. He’ll try applying that secret to the Surflight.

“I want to see if I can really excite the audience,” says Miller. So he picked up the phone and he called. He called some of the biggest

names and biggest hearts he has worked with. As a result, Judd Hirsch is playing “Art.” Cindy Williams and JoAnne Worley are playing, “The Odd Couple.” Dawn Wells and Peter Marshall will star in “Love Letters.”

“I’m asking big favors,” Miller says. And the favors are being returned. “…It’s sort of a miracle,” he says. “I keep waiting for the phone to ring and everyone saying, ‘I can’t come.’ ”

Whether the phone rings or not, Miller’s in it for the long haul. He wants to see the Surflight on to better times – back to break even and then some.

His plan: to take the Surflight to the next level, to make the Surflight such a theater destination that it’ll give even the Atlantic Ocean a run for its money in terms of draw. “People will come because of what we’re doing here,” Miller says. He’s banking on it.

SheerArtistryRachel joined the team at her mother, Dorothy Goldberg’s successful wallcoverings and design business, which she began with two partners 15 years earlier.

After all, she would still be employing her creative talents, and through the media of fabric, textile and color, transforming spaces into special places, turning rooms into refuges.

Now Chief Designer and President of Creative Wallcoverings & Interiors, Rachel has helped to create one of the premier design firms on the east coast, serving clients from New Jersey to Florida.

With 14 talented employees, including a team of award-winning designers, the New Providence, NJ-based, full-service interior design firm handles everything from custom window treatments and handcrafted custom upholstered furniture to lighting, and of course, designer wallcoverings. In fact, Creative Wallcoverings & Interiors boasts one of the largest libraries of fabrics and wallcoverings in the state.

After all these years, Creative Wallcoverings is still a family affair. Rachel’s husband, Gary Kapner, joined the firm 12 years ago as Vice President/General Manager, and Rachel’s mother — who started it all — continues to work part-time.

Rachel & Gary Kapner

We recently sat down with Rachel to chat about the design business.

What advice do you offer to clients when you start work on a project?Rachel: One of the things I do is ask clients to clip photos of interiors they don’t like.

That’s interesting. The advice is usually to clip out photos of things you do like . . . Rachel: That’s helpful, but it’s also good to know what a client has a strong reaction against – for example, birds on pillows, particular colors or prints. From there we can work on what they do like. Another important consideration is to discuss the budget right away. This way, we can create a look that will work for the client’s pocketbook. What’s great is that in the last five years, manufacturers have been producing lines at different price points, so people can get the look they want for less.

Has that created more flexibility for you as a design showroom?Rachel: Well, it certainly gives people more options. We have an extremely talented group of designers here. We love what we do! Our clients may not be moving, but they’re definitely updating their interiors.

Sounds like you’re busy . . . Rachel: (chuckles) I have boundless energy. Today I was up at 4:30 a.m. and did some paperwork and got organized for the day. Now I’m on my way to Sea Girt to meet with a client. And then I’m back in the office. I have three client appointments in the evening, and then I’m checking on orders. I’ll be done at about 10 or 11 tonight.

Yikes . . . Rachel: My husband Gary, our VP and General Manager, is a huge support. We balance each other perfectly. He’s developed a successful ‘organizational team strategy’, that focuses on service and attention to detail from the onset of a project to its completion. Actually, it’s quite comforting for our clients, and me!

Are you seeing any design trends lately?Rachel: For a while, the interiors in magazines and in fashion were a bit drab and somber, but now the look is trending brighter, bolder and more colorful. Another trend is that people are getting away from very formal rooms, which were popular in the eighties and nineties. Now, the rooms are still beautiful and elegant, but they’re more relaxed and less fussy. But trends aside, what matters to us at Creative Wallcoverings is our clients’ needs and desires.

Who has inspired your design philosophy?Rachel: Certainly Mario Buatta, the King of Chintz. He’s notable for employing multiple fabrics in a room, for color, classicism, and comfort – but I’ve edited the look for a more transitional feel. However, my real inspiration comes from my clients. The process is collaborative. I learn about how they live in their homes and include them in every step of the design work. In fact, I pack away the fabrics I use on a job for a few years. My clients often know one another, so it’s important. We don’t just do one “look.” At Creative Wallcoverings, we pride ourselves on our versatility.

Do you have a favorite room to design?Rachel: For me, it’s not about whether it’s a powder room or a family room. It’s about seeing a job through to completion, from A to Z. It’s about seeing the room perfectly executed and installed and looking great. I love that!

If you could live in any house, in any place, where would it be?Rachel: Definitely Arizona. We’ve vacationed here, and I love it. I just love to be outside, and I love the heat. I’d have walls of windows so I could look out at the mountains and the beautiful terrain. I think we will end up there one day.

Luckily for us, Rachel Kapner is still here.

When Rachel Kapner graduated in 1990 from Roger Williams University with a major in Fine Arts, she was poised to be a fashion designer. Her affinity for fabrics and textiles, and her artful sense of style, had her contemplating attending the

Fashion Institute of Technology. She had a change of heart.
