Climates in different places vary due to lots of factors. How do these places differ?

Explain what factors influences a climate system.

Lattitude (distance North and South from the equator) effects the concentration of solar energy on the earths surface.

Generally, the further north or south you are from the Equator, the warmer it will be. This is because the world is shaped like a ball and the energy from the sunhas to cover a larger area to the poles.

• The Earth receives much more heat from the sun at the equator and the tropics than anywhere else. Itmoves this energy in two major ways – through wind and water.

Quick question!• On a mini whiteboard write the letter that relates to

each correct statement.

A. Winds move the suns energy towards the equatorB. Winds move the suns energy towards the equatorC. The Equator and the tropics receive more energy

from the sun than other places on Earth.D. The climate is just what the weather is like. E. The red line on a climate diagram represents

temperature.

• Heat is also moved from the equator to the poles through the ocean. The nearer you are to one of these oceanic ‘thermal’s’ the warmer your location will be.

Water warms and cools more slowly than the land around it, being near the ocean means a

milder climate.

Factors affecting climateFrom the interactive you should now know more

about the influences on the World's climate:• Latitude• Location relative to continents and oceans• Situation (where you are) in relation to large

scale atmospheric circulation patterns• Altitude• Local geographical features such as

topography (hills and mountains) or the nature of a built up area

Task and success criteria• Latitude (how north or south you are from the equator)• Location relative to continents and oceans• Situation in relation to large scale atmospheric circulation patterns• Altitude (height above sea level)• Local geographical features such as topography (hills and

mountains) or the nature of a built up area.

How would you explain each process to a young audience of 10 year olds? What are the key words you would use?

As a class come up with success criteria to judge the presentations.  write a 5 minute presentation that explains each of the processes and

present this to your class.Use the rest of your lesson to present these to the rest of your group-

what will they think about your presentation?

• As a class, use the criteria for judging each pair’s presentation.

• Which pair made the best presentation and why?
