50 Years of Success...ASPIRA, Inc. of Illinois was established in 1968 by community activist, Mirta Ramirez, educators andcommunity leaders to address the growing social and educational needs of youth in Chicago's Puerto Ricancommunity. ASPIRA, Inc. of Illinois is an associate member of ASPIRA, a national organization founded by Dr. Antonia Pantoja, a recognized educator and civic leader. In 1961, Dr. Pantoja created a youth development model that incorporated leadership development,mentoring, college and career access, counseling, advocacy and civic engagement, arts and culture, andfamily support services. This model became the inspiration for school-based leadership ASPIRA Clubs, wherestudents also learned the 'ASPIRA Process' of awareness, analysis, and action. Through ASPIRA Clubs,students have received leadership training, engaged in cultural enrichment activities, and launchedcommunity action projects to develop their abilities to become effective leaders of their communities. In Illinois, we serve approximately 3,000 students and families every year. For more than 50 years, we havehelped low-income students attend college and numerous families access support services. Our motto,"Leadership through Education", exemplifies our mission and speaks to our accomplishments. Our youthprograms are successful because our staff are dedicated, culturally and linguistically competent and highly-trained. All services are provided in English and Spanish. Our approach is multi-systemic and addresses allfamily members' needs in collaboration with other social service agencies, health care providers, public schools,higher education institutions and government agencies. Our Miguel del Valle Youth Development Centerparticipants network, build positive relationships, and have fun while volunteering on a project, engaging incultural exchanges and celebrations, exploring Chicago's communities, and working on college applicationsand financial aid. Our innovative youth leadership, and career/workforce development initiatives are vital to student successand provide a safe environment for students to realize their full potential. Like our symbol, the Pitirre, ourstudents are prepared to reinforce ASPIRA’s belief that even the smallest and seemingly powerless can takecontrol of their lives and cause change.
