    NAS Wins Outstanding Program Award

    ALTASTEEL Ltd.

    Impressive scenes awaited the tour group (AM).

    ASME NAS members and guests visited the Altasteel mill inEdmonton on May 16, 2014. Attendees observed the scrapsteel manufacturing processes, including loading scrap,melting in an electric arc furnace, hot steel tap, forming and

    rolling and automatic packing at the yard for distribution. Thegroup was fortunate to have five very knowledgeable andenthusiastic tour guides and got to see all of the facilityequipment in action, which they were told is rare for a tour.The attendees agreed that this was a very memorable event,and on behalf of the attendees the NAS Executive Committeewould like thank Altasteel for their kind hospitality.     September Section EventTechnical Dinner Meeting

    Practical Introduction to Root Cause Analysis

    Andr-Michel Ferrari of Enbridge Pipelines was the expert speaker during theTechnical Dinner Meeting on September 8, 2014. The event was held at theUniversity of Alberta Faculty Club, which not only provided an excellent buffetdinner but also a pleasant atmosphere for socializing and networking. The subject ofthe evenings presentation was Root Cause Analysis (RCA). Attendees wereintroduced to the fundamentals of the RCA methodology and how it applies tovarious industry settings with examples of how it may even be useful for everydaylife.Andr-Michel Ferrari, P.Eng., is a Reliability Manager with Enbridge Pipelines(Liquid Pipelines Division) with over 20 years of industrial experience in ReliabilityEngineering, Maintenance Engineering and Quality Systems Implementation. Hisexperience covers world class companies in the field of brewing, semiconductor andoil & gas industries. The ASME NAS executive would like to express sincereappreciation to Andr-Michel for his high-quality presentation. (PM)

    April Section EventConference

    ASME Early Career Forum

    ASME NAS is pleased to report the success of the ASME Early Career Forum 1 - Advancing Your Engineering Career.This Forum, which took place April 26, 2014 at Edmontons Westin hotel, was the first of a series of four Early CareerForumsand was a joint effort of ASMEs Old Guard, District D, International Petroleum Technology Institute (IPTI), and Northern

    Alberta Section. The Forum which was tailored for recent engineering graduates and engineering students, was well attended withover 40 in-person participants. Some participants travelled from as far away as Texas and Columbia. There was also a webinarcomponent with over 70 online participants. The speakers, some of who are shown below, consisted of industry experts andASME leaders, both local and from abroad, representing companies such as Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, ElementsOffshore, Innovation Scientific LLC, STCerri International, Jacobs Canada Inc., Canadian National Energy Board, Enbridge Inc.,C-FER Technologies, Baker Hughes, and Hess Corporation. Although this Forum series has an Oil and Gas theme, withpresentations such as Creating a Distinguished Career, Dealing with Human Resources - Engineer to Leader, ASME - YourCareer Partner, Deliberately Choosing your Employer, and Safety and Ethics in the Workplace, the material covered is

    definitely relevant to todays early career engineers working in any industry and anywhere in the world. ASME NAS would like totake this opportunity to thank all of those who participated in making this event a resounding success. Please watch for futureupdates regarding dates and locations for the remaining events in this Early Career Forum series. (DJS)

    November Event - iRSM TourThe Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) is an internationally recognized clinical and research institute

    focused on medical reconstructive sciences. Established in 1993, iRSM has earned worldwide recognition for innovation,advances, and contributions to patient care and research on a wide range of disciplines such as surgery, medicine, dentistry,rehabilitation medicine, engineering and computing sciences.

    As an international referral center, it is a leader in the complex area of osseointegration (bone) implanted devices for prostheticreplacement of skull and facial defects resulting from cancer, trauma and congenital conditions. Amongst its facilities, it has arange of research laboratories and clinics with capabilities that include 3D modeling and printing; production of life-like siliconefacial prosthetics; and an anechoic chamber dedicated to bone conduction hearing research.

    This is an excellent opportunity to get a glance into the clinical research and applications that interface between biomechanicalengineering and medicine that has improved the quality of life for many people and should not be missed! (AM)

    Outreach - Mechanical Engineering Student Design ChallengeASME NAS award for top student teams in 2

    ndyear Mechanical Engineering Design Competition

    At the end of the 2014 winter term, the University of Alberta Mechanical Engineering Department hosted its annualEngineering Design Awards. During this event, students groups winning their respective 2nd, 3rd and 4th year engineering design

    competitions were presented with trophies and prize money. The ASME Northern Alberta Section has been a sponsor of this eventfor many years, handing out the MEC E 260 Shop Award for outstanding ingenuity and craftsmanship in the 2nd year vehicledesign and fabrication contest. This years winners were Zhi Yi Chen, Sheldon Lee Holland, David Andrew Miller and AlexanderJulian Skiba for the fall term 2013, and Ruby Nicholls, Drew Gingras, Boston Maris, Alexandre Sauve and Kevin O'Rourke forthe winter term 2014.
