“I really was not sure whatto expect from the camp butit far exceeded my expecta-tions and I was glad I came. The faculty and presenters

were awesome. They taughtthis ‘old dog’ many ‘new

tricks’ that will directly im-prove the instruction I givemy students. Thank you for

coming to Meridian.”Faye Kinard

“I had never taken amaterials science course and

could not have definedmaterials science to save my

life. However, I found thatmaterials science is very

interesting and gives a newtwist to science like

chemistry and physics. I wasfascinated by many of the

principles shared anddisplayed. But I think I am

very interested in thecreative aspect of compositematerials. I would certainly

like to look into this.Additionally, I was quiteimpressed with ASM for

posing such great campsfree to teachers and the

institution as a whole seemsto have some very noblegoals and ideals, which I

truly appreciate.”Mark Ash

“I am a 17-year-old enteringmy senior year of highschool. I want to thank youfor your generosity andsupport of the EisenmanMaterials Camp. Thisexperience has been wildlyincredible, to say the veryleast. I have learned somuch in such a short amountof time from the experiencedand passionate mentorshere. From themicrostructure of martensiteto the complex process ittakes to manufacture aseemingly simple nut, theknowledge I’ve obtained haswowed and awed me. I wasexperiencing and learningsomething that I feel noother camp could offer me.Everything about thiscamp—from the knowledge Ilearned to the people I met—is invaluable to me. Myknowledge about materialsand engineering has vastlyexpanded and the camp hasnearly cemented my decisionto major in an engineeringdiscipline in college. I can’tthank you enough for yourdonation, as it gave me thegift of this camp, which Ican’t put a price on.”2012 Eisenman Materials Camp StudentSarah Ireland, Pittsburgh, Pa.

“Anna is very driven by her love of math and science and aspires to be an engineer inthe future. She is currently enrolled in an Internship at Arizona State University in thematerials, science and engineering program—taking advantage of every opportunityto help her grow and learn in her field of interest. Her participation in severalorganizations on campus reflects her passion for helping others to achieve. She is amember of the cross country team, a member of the chamber orchestra and active inNational Spanish Honor Society and still manages to maintain a 4.00 GPA.”Ms Laura Zinke, Gifted Program Coordinator

Frauke Hogue is a consult-ant metallographer in failureanalysis. She has provideddecades of service to ASM In-ternational, the ASM MaterialsEducation Foundation, and theInternational MetallographicSociety (IMS), especially insupport of training and educa-tion programs. She was born in Germany and received her edu-

cation in metallography and testing of materials atthe Lette Verein in Berlin, Germany. In 1967 shemoved to Los Angeles with the goal of learning tech-nical English. She worked for Voi-Shan, a manufac-turer of aerospace fasteners, in the Quality Controllaboratory for ten years. At Voi-Shan she wrote train-ing manuals, trained new technicians, and interfacedwith customers and suppliers. In 1981 Frauke be-came an independent consultant in metallography, working mainly in the greater Los Angeles area, pro-viding metallographic services and training programsto failure analysis companies, including those in theelectronics industry.Since 1985 she has been teaching intensive

courses at ASM International and at companiesthroughout the United States. The first course wasMetallographic Techniques. Realizing there was agap in the offered courses, Frauke developed Prac-tical Interpretation of Microstructures which consistsof a collection of about 300 prepared specimens anda notebook of annotated images of various materialsand conditions. This class was followed by Metal-lography for Failure Analysis and Metallography of

Fasteners. Both Practical Interpretation of Micro-structures and Metallography for Failure Analysishave been converted into one-day, lecture-onlycourses which have been presented to internationalaudiences at conferences such as MS&T, AeroMat,and Microscopy & Microanalysis. She received theASM Distinguished Educator Award in 1996 and theASM Instructor of Merit Award in 1997.Frauke has always been interested in exposing

young people to the field of materials science, in gen-eral, and metallurgy and metallography, specifically. She was a Boy Scout merit badge councilor forMetals Engineering for many years. When the ASMMaterials Education Foundation started thinkingabout Materials Camp, she was very much involved indeveloping the program and served several years ascurriculum leader. She has been a mentor at each ofthe Eisenman Materials Camps since 2000 and also atcamps in Chicago, Los Angeles, and in France. As a member of IMS for over twenty years, she

has presented several papers at conferences includ-ing Metallography of Fasteners, Metallography ofMeteorites, and Metallography in Failure Analysis. In2000 she was elected to the board of directors. Cur-rently she is serving as IMS Past President(2011–2013).Frauke’s other technical affiliation is with Inde-

pendent Metallurgical Engineering Consultants ofCalifornia (IMECA). She has been an active member, planning meetings and presenting papers, and hasserved as president. She lives with her husband Har-lan in Pacific Palisades and Yucca Valley, California, and they enjoy traveling, hiking, exploring backroads of the desert, and classical music together.
