Dear Friends,

In the beginning of year 2015, I would like to welcome the Sheep and bid farewell to the Horse.

2014 was a fruitful and colorful year to AUSF featuring 4 championships in 4 sports, a Seminar, a Steering Committee meeting, 2 Executive Committee meetings and the biennial General Assembly. The “Mega-event” strategy/module was continued in attracting public attention and encouraging participation. Two Mega-events were held in 2014. The first one was in Qingdao, China featuring the 3rd Asian University Beach Volleyball, the 2nd Asian University Golf Championship, an Executive Committee meeting and the General Assembly held in August. The second Mega-event was hosted by the Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation in November. The brand-name event of AUSF, the Asian University Men’s Basketball Championship that was held in Chinese Taipei five times in a row in every two years was staged in New Taipei City together with a Seminar and an Executive Committee meeting. These events were well organized by the hosts and well received by the participants. To conclude the year 2014, we wish to congratulate the effort of the Asian University Sports Council (AUSC) in staging the 17th ASEAN University Games in Palembang, Indonesia in December with an attendance of 2500 students. This is a multi-sport event among university students in Southeast Asia held in every two years.

Affiliation of Iraq in General Assembly held in Qingdao has brought the membership of AUSF to a total of 36. It is noteworthy that the AUSF Education and Development Center was established to help the Education Committee in launching training programs. With the fast development of AUSF, members also realized that it was timely to review/update the Constitution. A working group was formed to mount on this project in late 2014.

I am very proud of the involvement of our members at different levels in FISU. In the current mandate, 8 FISU Executive Committee members came from Asia while 23 experts are serving in various Permanent Committees. In 2014, 7 out of some 30 World University Championships

(WUC) were hosted by AUSF members: Taekwondo (CHN), Floorball (SIN), Squash (IND), Shooting Sport (UAE), Woodball (MAS), Weightlifting (THA), and Speed Skating (KAZ). Amongst them, the championships in Singapore, India and Malaysia were the first FISU event organized in these countries respectively. I am really happy and excited to witness the growing involvement of Asian Countries in FISU. In 2016, 9 WUCs will be held in Asia and I am certain that more Asian countries will make a share in the global sports community in the short future. Sport is always an effective way to bring together people and nations together. Through organizing sports events at home and participation in overseas sports competitions, the encounter of values and wisdom of Asian cultures with the western culture would bring along positive impact to the entire world. When the encounter starts in university sports, the impact would be even more encouraging and exciting. Harmony and peace will be the result in the course of development in university sports.

Before I conclude my message, I expect all AUSF members to get ready for the forthcoming Universiades that will be hosted in Asia: - 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, Korea- 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan - 2017 Summer Univesiade in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei

Finally, I would like to thank FISU for her trust and support, other continental federations in sharing and exchange of experience, our partners for their cares and the commitment and involvement of AUSF members. With all these in place, I firmly believe that we would make a better 2015.

I wish all of you an excellent year in 2015 and look forward to meeting you at our upcoming events.

Dear Friends,

It is a great pleasure for the president of FISU to present a friendly salute to all the Asian student-athletes, and express gratitude and consideration to the people who keep devotingthemselves to the development of Asian University Sports. I feel particularly honoured to be invited to address you in this new issue of the yearly AUSF Magazine, which offers a brilliant overview of the 2014 various and fruitful activities of students’ sport in Asia.

The Asian University Sports Federation (AUSF) is the governingbody of university sport in the continent. Thirty six national andregional University Sport Organizations from five sub-regionsare represented in terms of participation and organisation of sports and educational events, providing a unique platform forall university students in Asia to reach harmony by exchangingboth their academic and sportsmanship experiences.

In 2014, AUSF organized 4 Asian University Championships, gathering together 330 participants from 16 university sport organizations. To conclude a very active sporting calendar, the 17th edition of the ASEAN University Games (AUG), a biennial sports event organized by the University Sport Council of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, was staged in Palembang, Indonesia from 10-21 December, 2014. The games involved 2500 student-athletes competing in 18 sport events, representing the universities of 11 ASEAN member countries, including 7 AUSF member countries.

Beside its purely intracontinental activity, AUSF shows great dynamism and enthusiasm in the International University Sport movement.

AUSF members are currently strongly represented at all levels of power within FISU through the involvement of 8 members in the FISU Executive Committee, and 23 experts in the various FISU Permanent Committees of FISU.

1355 student-athletes (496 women and 859 males), and 556 officials from 26 AUSF members countries and regions have participated in the 28 FISU World University Championships(WUC) held in 2014, which represent 30% of total global participation of the FISU membership.

7 of those WUC have been organized in Asia by AUSF members: Taekwondo (CHN), Floorball (SIN), Squash (IND),

Shooting Sport (UAE), Woodball (MAS), Weightlifting (THA), Speed Skating (KAZ); it must be mentioned that Singapore, India, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia organized a WUC for the first time, reflecting the positive momentum developed within the AUSF.

The medium and long-term investment of the AUSF in organizing FISU international events is already acquired: - In 2015 the Summer Universiade will be held in Gwangju

(Korea); - In 2016, 9 WUCs will be held in Asia; - Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan are already preparing

respectively the 2017 Summer Universiade (Taipei) and the 2017 Winter (Almaty)…

…not to mention Mongolia, that has already expressed interest for the 2034 Summer Universiade 2034!

On 11 December 2014, just before I prepared this document,Mr Kenny Chow, the AUSF Secretary-General (and also FISU Assessor) made a presentation at the 2nd ASEAN University Sports Council International Conference, linked with the ASEAN University Games. It was the first time for AUSF to attend this conference. Mr Chow convinced various ASEAN member organisations to join AUSF and FISU, preparing new opportunities for Asian student-athletes to be part of the great FISU Family and participate in our sporting and educational activities, in Asia and in the whole world.

On behalf of FISU Executive Committee, I wish to pay tribute to all our good friends from AUSF, student-athletes, official and decision makers, with a special mention to AUSF President, Dr Xinsheng ZHANG, for their significant contribution to the promotion of university sport in Asia and the development of University Sport all over the world. It is clear that AUSF is a key partner for FISU and plays an essential role as a go-between with the associations of this vast and diverse continent.

1st Asian University Climbing Championship

For the first time, close to seventy climbers from leading universities across Asia, including China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Singapore competed in Singapore in a week-long intense bouldering and lead climbing competition. Organized by the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 1 to 7 July 2014, it was endorsed by AUSF and supported by several partners including the IFSC Asian Climbing Council and Singapore Mountaineering Federation (National Sports Association for Climbing and aka SMF).

The competition was held in accordance to the International Federation of Sports Climbing (IFSC) rules and the Technical Committee comprised officials from regional countries. The Technical Delegate and Jury President were from Hong Kong and the two route setters, from Japan. Coincidentally, the Chief Judge appointed was Singaporean. As it was the inaugural edition, both the student and staff organizers had much to learn from the Technical Committee and SMF, both in the preparation and execution stages.

The climbers vied for the top three

positions in four categories: Men’s Bouldering, Women’s Bouldering, Men’s Lead Climbing, and Women’s Lead Climbing. The lead climbing category was held at a newly built rockwall at NUS University Town. The bouldering part of the event, however, was held at Funan DigitaLife Mall, a

complex in the heart of Singapore'sbusiness district. The boulder wall which was about 25m in length, 4.5m in height and 2.6m in width, was constructed in the middle of the Mall, attracting much attention and spectatorship.

Despite the tension and pressure, there was much interaction amongst the athletes not just within their country teams. All the athletes and officials stayed and dined at the same hotel on campus. They also had an opportunity to visit S.E.A. Aquarium Marine Life Park at Resorts World Sentosa as part of the social activity. The new friendships made were clearly seen at the Farewell Dinner when contacts were exchanged and many photos shared.

The labour-intensive competition also saw many volunteers helping out. Students from the NUS Climbing and Mountaineering Clubs were deployed as route judges, belayers and marshals. A number of alumni from these clubs came back to help out too.

5th Asian University Men’s Basketball Championship 2014

5th Asian University Men’s Basketball Championship was held in Taipei city, Chinese Taipei from Nov 3 to 8, 2014. Seven teams from China, Hong Kong, Korea, Macau, Mongolia, Philippines and Chinese Taipei took part in this event, especially team Macau who was the first time to join this game.

The championship was officially opened by Mr. ZHANG Xinsheng, AUSF President. Mr. AL-HAI Omar (Senior Vice President), Mr. XUE Yanqing (Vice Secretary General) as well as the CISCA Chair, Mr. SEETOW Cheng Fave (Treasurer), Mr. Jargalsaikhan DORJSUREN (Assessor), Mr. HA Woongyong (Auditor) and Mr. Kenta KAWASHIMA (Technical delegate) of AUSF attended the Opening Ceremony.

It’s the 5th time Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation (CTUSF) hosted this championship. We specially planned a banquet after the preliminaries, hoping all participants can relax after exhausting games and have better performance in the following days. Most importantly, coming to Taipei may exchange not only the basketball skills but also friendship.

This time each team was neck and neck in ability, but still with their characteristic of basketball. For example, China player’s height is always the highest in Asia, Korea is always widely known as quick, fierce and accurate. Mongolia player is strong, agile and brave…etc. Through the 5 days and 15 matches, though China lost one game in preliminary to Chinese

Taipei but in the final game they defeated them with 94-91 and won the champion. And Hong Kong won the record-high brown medal of Asian University Men’s Basketball Championship.

28th Summer Universiade Gwangju 2015

In less than seven months until Gwangju takes the center stage, over 14,000 athletes, officials, and journalists from 170 countries all over the world will visit the “City of Light” for the duration of 12 days from July 3 to 14.

Monday December 15th marked another significant point in the build up to the Universiade Gwangju 2015, being exactly 200 days until the start of the games. While the big day is getting closer,

the Gwangju 2015 Universiade Organizing Committee (GUOC) is getting ready to take its preparation to the next level by focusing on games-time operation. As all venue constructions are on time for completion by the end of March, Gwangju is well on track to delivering a lasting legacy for South Korea.

Operational Readiness

The GUOC is making the transition from the planning phase to operational readiness. The Venue Operation Plan (VOP), which is an operating manual for games-time, is under revision and includes operation plans for 41 competition areas and 31 non-competition areas. In order to prevent or control unexpected situations which might occur during the event, the GUOC has conducted on-site simulations every two weeks to improve the VOP since

November. The GUOC will continue to update the VOP as the games-time gets closer and produce a final version by the end of 2014. Once the VOP is finalized, preparation for test events will be underway.

Test Events in Preparation for the Universiade

Test events provide the opportunity to exercise all operational procedures and to identify and resolve problems during games-time. The GUOC has held a comprehensive series of test events which include volleyball, baseball, judo, football, and handball. Gwangju will host 16 more test events starting from March to June 2015.

The Total Integration Management System (TIMS) will be up and running for the test events. Therefore, both competition areas

and non-competition areas will be closely involved in hosting the events. The GUOC is planning to test out all of the functions and services before the Opening Ceremony in order to host a smooth Universiade.

Venue Preparation: Construction Nearly 80% Complete

Only 3 out of 70 venues will be newly built. The existing venues and facilities will be refurbished to meet the international sporting standards. 80% of the entire construction program is complete and right on track for the test

events starting in March.

The Athletes’ Village construction is almost 78% complete and is showing progress. The Village will accommodate over 14,000 athletes and officials and will incorporate a full range of conveniences and amenities during the game.

Gearing towards Delegation Services

As the Opening Ceremony of the Universiade Gwangju 2015 is approaching, the interaction between the GUOC and delegations are becoming more

frequent and significant. Therefore, the GUOC is also gearing towards providing excellent delegation services.

The General Entry (G-Entry) registration has been open since November 2014 and the form should be submitted no later than December 31st 2014. Since the G-Entry is compulsory, the GUOC is giving regular reminders to encourage the delegations to participate in the Universiade and help complete the registration process.

Welcome to All - the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade

Where there is a will, there is a way. After four unsuccessful bids, Taipei City's charm finally succeeded in winning the right to host the 2017 Summer Universiade. This will be the largest high-profile multi-sport extravaganza ever to be held in Chinese Taipei. Taipei City is working toward bringing all sports stadiums and facilities up to international standards. Excitement for the Games is gathering momentum, and we want to engage more people as the time draw near.

A total of 64 venues will be ready for competition, with each venue compliant with FISU regulations regarding environmental protection and conservation. We plan to establish long-lasting bonds of friendship with countries all around the world, promote peace and mutual respect and help make sports a part of everyday life.

Urban revitalization, public engagement and cultural exchange will boost Chinese Taipei's global standing. International exchange through sports will propel Taipei city to a higher echelon and introduce more people to this vibrant city - the pride and joy of Chinese Taipei!

A Free and Convenient Service

"Chinese Taipei has become the first place in the world to offer free wireless Internet access on a large scale to tourists", reported the UK's Daily Telegraph on 11 June 2013. A 14 February 2014 report entitled “The most convenient cities for wireless Internet access in the

world" looked at Taipei, New York, Paris, Helsinki, Florence, Tel Aviv, Hong Kong, Macau and Perth and chose Taipei for the top spot.

A CNN report on 15 January 2014 listed the free Wi-Fi along with night markets, the National Palace Museum, National Health Insurance and dumplings among the ten features of Chinese Taipei that are the best in the world. Clearly, Taipei's development of free public wireless Internet access is having a very positive impact, making Taipei more attractive to tourists and business visitors as well as improving Chinese Taipei's international image.Visitors from overseas can apply for an account online or at a service counter, including various Taipei City visitor service centers and major hotels.

Bolstering Firefighting Ability – Optimizing Rescue Drills

To protect the safety of spectators

in venues and guests staying at hotels during the 2017 Universiade, Taipei City has upgraded the training of the fire prevention management personnel at a range of venues. We have also stepped up fire rescue drills for firefighters in order to make Taipei a safe and friendly city for the 2017 Universiade. Fire alarm team training is carried out at the indoor venues every six months to maximize initial emergency response abilities. There are also annual reports on examinations of and repair to fire safety equipment, with the city fire department carrying out follow-up checks. Between 1 July and 31 December 2013, 2,480 venue staff members received fire alarm training.

To ensure the safety of hotel guests at Taipei's 436 registered hotels, checks on fire drills and fire safety equipment will be stepped up. From 1 July to 31 December 2013, a total of 6,437 hotel

employees have received fire safety training and 1,393 fire safety equipment checks (and random checks) have been carried out. The city fire department will continue to work with hotels that do not yet meet the required standard until suitable improvements have been made.

Apart from improving fire safety equipment maintenance and autonomous personnel training at the various venues and spectator accommodation, we shall also formulate a fire prevention, rescue and warning system. Before the Games begin, venue operators, competition venue personnel and other bodies will come together to analyze examples of past emergencies at international sports competition and simulate various emergency scenarios. After carrying out disaster prevention and rescue drills at individual venues in the various administrative districts, we shall hold a city-wide disaster prevention and rescue drill to strengthen our overall disaster prevention and rescue capabilities.

The meeting in Sydney also enabled student representatives from the Oceania region to attend and observe the General Assembly and then take part in a strategic planning session that will lead FISU Oceania into the next 12 months and beyond.

With student being the backbone of the FISU community and the focus of its mandate to promote university sport, FISU Oceania is committed to ensuring its students have an active voice on the FISU Oceania executive.

"One thing that we all remain committed to is having the voice of our most important stakeholder group, our students, heard on the Executive Committee. With a plan to formalise the Student Commissionby January 2015, I am keen that a nominee from this group will be welcomed into the Executive Committee soon after," said FISU Oceania President, Martin Doulton.

On Tuesday, 30th September, the students were engaged in a series of workshops where topics on Personal Branding, Emotional Intelligence and Event Management were presented.

3. Ensuring all current FISU members in Oceania maintain their membership of FISU for the 2015-19 mandate period and support sustainable membership growth;

4. Support and strengthen intra-continental interactions between members via the sport, administration and student networks;

5. Build and then strengthen relationships with other Continental organisations so that closer interactions and possible partnerships could well provide mutual benefits and gain a better return on our resources than if we did things alone eg ONOC, WHO." explained Martin.

FISU OCEANIA AT THE 2014 WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS

In 2014, 90 athletes from FISU Oceania competed at 11 World University Championships. While the majority of these competitors represented Australia and New Zealand, there were 16 top ten finishers and a number of notable performances including a silver medal by the Australian men’s crew at the WUC Match Racing and a bronze medal by Fiona Albert (Australia) at the WUC Rowing.

LOOKING FORWARD – 2015

FISU Oceania President, Martin Doulton looks forward to capitalising on the association’s stable administrative base to focus on reviewing and refreshing the CUSF Strategic Plan for 2015-2019 in line with the FISU direction. This future may well include:1. Resourcing of NUSF support programs at sub regional level eg in Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia through a Regional Development Funding Program;

2. Roll out to all members of Capacity building Education based programs such as the My Unisport event and Team management seminars;
