UK, Thailand cook up copro pact http://www.c21media.net/uk-thailand-cook-up-copro-pact/ Posted By Gün Akyuz On 04-11-2016

The UK and Thailand have struck the countries’ first full coproduction partnership at this week’s Asian Side of the Doc (ASD), which concluded yesterday.

Amanda Groom

A new food show, A Taste of Thailand (working title, 10×60’), will take viewers on a journey through the country’s cuisine and culture and will be coproduced by state broadcaster MCOT and UKTV.

MCOT-owned prodco Panorama Worldwide will start production on the show in January with an as-yet unnamed UK production partner. The hosted show, involving Thai and British on-screen talent, is due to launch in the third quarter of 2017.

“This is the first real coproduction series between Thailand and the UK,” said MCOT’s exec VP and chief operating officer Soonthorn Areerak. “MCOT is working in partnership with The Bridge to bring the best of Thai food and programming to a global audience.”

Amanda Groom, CEO of The Bridge, who originally pitched the show and brokered the deal, will executive produce the new show. She said the deal represented “a new model programming deal for Thailand and the UK. The series will deliver a unique insight into Thai cuisine and culture for global audiences.”

The show has also attracted interest from as-yet undisclosed parties in Australia and the US, Groom told C21.

The coproduction will also be one of the first projects to apply for the new Thai government funding initiative [1], available from January, said Groom. She is looking for sponsorship deals for the show, which all partners aim to establish as a long-running returnable brand.

Thailand is now pursuing South Korea’s model of government-backed ‘soft power,’ which has successfully promoted the country’s cultural traditions and people to the world.

“Ten years of South Korea’s deliberate soft power strategy has been a big success,” said Groom. “It’s the reason why its cultural exports, like K-Pop and its TV shows, are on the map. Malaysia is looking to do the same thing and now so is Thailand.”

Los Pensivos Films’ The Six (China) was a winner

Thailand scored a double win for documentary pitches made at this week’s Asian Side of the Doc (ASD) at last night’s awards and closing ceremony.

The wins come in tandem with news of Thai state broadcaster MCOT’s first full coproduction deal [1] with the UK for culinary show A Taste of Thailand (working title).

MCOT’s production and distribution arm Panorama Worldwide was one of four winners selected from 31 new projects pitched over the four-day event, which was held in Thai capital Bangkok.

Hard-hitting single doc Hope Frozen, directed by Pailin Wedel, picked up the Best ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) Project award. The film follows a Thai scientist and his wife who cryo-preserve their deceased baby daughter’s brain in the hope that technological advances will be able to reanimate her in the future.

Thailand’s other winner was prodco Fat Stone Films, which scooped the Luang Prabang Film Festival Award for one-off documentary The Doctor, directed by Naruemon Chaingam and Aidan Jones. The programme investigates a passport forger who is helping a global network of terrorists and gangs, and explores Thailand’s role in the chain.

Yves Jeanneau, CEO and founder of ASD organiser Sunny Side Markets, told C21 he believed Bangkok and Thailand could be the “perfect hub” to develop ASEAN documentaries and to potentially set up a training academy for the region. ASD expects to return to Bangkok next year, he added.

The two other ASD winners were Chinese-based prodco Los Pensivos Films, which scooped Best Asian Project for The Six: Titanic’s Chinese Survivors. Directed by Arthur Jones, with coproduction funding from AsiaTV, the 90-minute film tells the stories of six Chinese men who survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and were detained and deported within 24 hours of their arrival in New York.

ASD’s Best International Award went to Raghu Rai: An Unframed Portrait, from India’s CRCI PVT, for a profile of the renowned Indian photographer. Made by Avani Rai, Finland’s Iikka Vehkalahti, the film’s partners include Anurag Kashap Films and IV Films, with coproduction funding from the IDFA Bertha Fund.

The winners receive a range of financial and other support from ASD and its partners to help fund and complete their documentary projects.

Digital and 360° strategies were high on the agenda at this year’s market, with Jeanneau noting that Asia’s digital revolution is moving faster than in Europe thanks to its younger population.

“The new digital economy is still establishing business models and that’s the best time for new opportunities,” he said, adding that producers should be thinking as “360 content” producers and beyond the linear 52-minute linear mould.

Jeanneau also hinted that a new international documentary VoD platform was in the works, with plans to be revealed around Sunny Side of the Doc in La Rochelle, France, next summer.

China wises up to OTT platform http://www.c21media.net/china-wises-up-to-ott-platform/

Posted By Gün Akyuz On 03-11-2016 A new Chinese-backed OTT platform is set to launch this month, targeting younger South-East Asian audiences outside of China.

Syatirah Safran

Wiseme will be aimed at 18- to 35-year-olds in nine South-East Asian countries, as well as Taiwan, with OTT platforms tipped to grow rapidly in Asia over the next few years.

Backed by China Media Capital and based in both Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur, the AVoD service will offer a mix of Chinese and Asian content.

Wiseme is initially using an AVoD funding model as an “aggressive” route to market, said Syatirah Safran, its general manager of content for South Asia Pacific, at this week’s Asian Side of the Doc event. It will also be looking to launch a companion SVoD service sometime in 2017.

Drama from China Media Capital will comprise 60% of the new streamer’s content, subtitled into local languages for its regional partnerships. However, Safran said Wiseme is keen to strike content deals with South-East Asian partners. Most of its programming is shortform clips ranging from five to 20 minutes long.

“We’re keeping it fun and local to South-East Asia, and 40% of it is consciously Asian,” she said. “We’re at this market to look for fun documentaries that would appeal to our users, who essentially live on their mobiles and the internet.

“We like to see ourselves as the spearhead for pushing South-East Asian content to the world, so what we want is to create more partnerships with broadcasters and producers in South-East Asia and be able to push it to the rest of the world.”

Separately, Safran told C21 that Wiseme is currently discussing partnerships with Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia to make up the other 40% of its content, targeting popular genres such as sitcoms and comedy sketches for reversioning as shorter clips.

In related news, French OTT platform Spicee.com is also seeking local partnerships in South Asian territories as part of its growth plans.

Also speaking at Asian Side of the Doc, which is currently underway in Bangkok, Alexandre Michelin, partner and senior VP at Spicee Media, said that while the SVoD service has so far focused on France, it has global ambitions.

Launched a year ago, Spicee is comparable to US youth-skewing firm Vice but offers a very different model of exclusive agenda-driven, editorially balanced factual content, targeting a “curious global” generation, which is estimated to be around 140 million people worldwide.

The service has already made headlines by offering controversial documentaries like extremist religious doc Salafistes and campaigns around conspiracy theories, which have raised its profile both in France and internationally.

While 90% of Spicee’s content is made in-house, Michelin said he was specifically interested in journalism and documentaries for the remaining 10%.

Asian nets urged to fill digital ‘hole’ http://www.c21media.net/asian-nets-urged-to-fill-digital-hole/

Posted By Gün Akyuz On 01-11-2016

Shifting viewing habits, digital projects and ramping up regional coproduction partnerships are major themes at this year’s Asian Side of the Doc market, which is underway in Bangkok.

Rohit Tharani

Speaking at the event, Discovery Networks Asia Pacific director of content creation and head of content for South-East Asia Rohit Tharani said the broadcaster was looking for both regional and local programming.

But he also identified “a real hole” in the market for made-for-digital content and called for more pitches in that area.

“We need to think about different platforms and changing consumption habits. A lot of the pitches we’re receiving are just traditional documentaries and linear programmes,” said Tharani. “That’s the way the market is going. We have to make a collective effort to get there.”

Although Discovery Networks owns and makes a majority of its content, Tharani said coproducing and rights-sharing were on the table for the broadcaster’s localised feeds in the region.

“It becomes a commercial decision, and perhaps we’ll want just South-East Asia rights, with the rest of the world for the producer to sell to,” he said, citing Discovery Networks Asia’s recently formed coproduction partnership with the IMDA, Singapore’s media and development authority.

Under the deal, Discovery will be producing content for mobile devices, traditional linear, 4K and VR, providing expertise from its US and UK offices to offer local training and workshops to kick-start the deal. The partnership includes a dozen 10-minute pilots that will first premiere on digital, Tharani said.

Thai state broadcaster MCOT is also keen to broaden its content and establish a regional presence with coproduction partnerships. The broadcaster is currently underway with a digital

renewal strategy across content and distribution platforms to reclaim younger viewers and strengthen its position in the country’s rapidly fragmenting market.

Thailand’s tech-savvy younger audiences seek out new content from around the world all the time, said MCOT exec VP and chief operating officer Soonthorn Areerak at the same event. With Thai viewers already used to watching Korean and Japanese programming, local content was no longer enough, he noted.

“I’m sure we can access more partners – producers, production companies and broadcasters are all welcome,” said Areerak. “This event is like a bridge between South-East Asia and the rest of the world and it’s a big opportunity for us to meet up with great talent.”

Alongside the broadcaster’s established documentary production and distribution arm Panorama Worldwide, MCOT is now looking to partner on new documentaries from independent producers to export as part of Thailand’s development into a knowledge-based society, Areerak added.

“We have long been producing for ourselves but have never learned what others are expecting to see from our content, and I believe this event gives us a lot of insight into what people want,” he continued. “We may be good at cinematography but maybe we’re not so good at storytelling and it’s something we need to learn over time.”

Asian Side of the Doc, which brings together projects and people from Europe and Asia, needs to develop, said Yves Jeanneau CEO and founder of event organiser Sunny Side Markets. “As documentary makers, we have a mission not only to tell stories but to put audiences in contact with human-interest stories coming from all continents and all countries that are universal and global.”

This year’s event, the seventh to be held in Asia, includes the participation of the UN’s cultural NGO UNESCO, which has joined as a partner on a European youth transmedia initiative called Generation What?. The initiative is launching in Asia Pacific, together with the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union, with MCOT one of the broadcasters interested in signing up.

Thailand’s doc hub plans revealed http://www.c21media.net/thailands-doc-hub-plans-revealed/

Posted By Gün Akyuz On 01-11-2016

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce is backing a push for the country to become a regional hub for documentary filmmaking and coproduction.

The ministry has made the country’s audiovisual production industry one of its top priorities, said vice-minister for commerce Winichai Chaemchang at Asian Side of the Doc here in Bangkok.

In August the government approved a 20-year roadmap, dubbed Thailand 4.0, to transform the country’s current economy into one based around innovation and knowledge.

The development comes in tandem with reforms to improve Thailand’s communications and financial sectors and facilitate investment and trade.

Chaemchang said the changes put the film and production industry on the national agenda and would help local filmmakers link up with international partners. They include financial incentives for films made or coproduced in Thailand, which in turn are hoped to enhance tourism and increase international sales for Thai productions.

The country is already building its credentials with factual production and distribution companies, such as MCOT-owned Panorama Worldwide, and high-quality films like By the River by filmmaker Nontawat Numbenchapol.

Thailand is the host nation for the seventh edition of Asian Side of the Doc, which is taking place this week in Bangkok with support from the Thai Ministry of Commerce.

Details Revealed for 2016 Asian Side of the Doc! Joanna Padovano " September 20, 2016 # Top Stories

BANGKOK: This year’s Asian Side of the Doc international documentary and specialist factual market will be

held from October 31 to November 3 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The event’s seventh edition will take place at the Avani Riverside Hotel. Over the four days, producers,

broadcasters, distributors and institutions will unite to establish new co-production opportunities. “Co-

productions are not commonplace yet,” said Yves Jeanneau, the CEO of Sunny Side markets. “They are

immediately feasible when there is shooting or spending in the country.”

Asian Side of the Doc 2016 is co-organized by Sunny Side of the Doc and Wishtrend Thailand. The event will

focus on the ASEAN zone: Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei,

Indonesia and the Philippines. The program includes One-to-One meetings and Meet the Executives

sessions, among many other highlights. “Apart from the pitching sessions with prizes, Asian Side of the Doc

will explore the ASEAN content boom market through several panels on co-production opportunities, case

studies, and synergies with OTT and SVOD platforms,” noted Jeanneau.

“There are many reasons why we chose Bangkok to host this seventh edition,” added Jeanneau. “At the 69th

Cannes Film Festival last May, a group of ASEAN film agencies and commissions came together to introduce

and showcase the best of ASEAN productions to the international film community. So, it is genuinely a new

market, getting more and more structured and these days that is an opportunity not to be missed. Then,

the diversification of channels and new online platforms, supported by local government policies, provides

new opportunities to sell completed programs. In short, Bangkok is the perfect ‘hub’ for the whole ASEAN

zone. We will be holding Asian Side of the Doc in a very auspicious and comfortable environment as we will

be in the Avani Riverside Hotel, which will be welcoming us in the best conditions to make this an

exceptional event!”

The 2016 Asian Side call for projects is still open. Producers and content creators can submit documentary

projects (one-offs, series, miniseries, short formats or transmedia/interactive) that will appeal to Asian

broadcasters, co-producers or other funders by September 29. Submission requirements can be found on

the Sunny Side of the Doc website.

Asian Side of the Doc moves to Thailand By Daniele Alcinii June 21, 2016

The seventh annual Asian Side of the Doc conference has moved to Bangkok, Thailand, following its March postponement due to “local logistical issues” in China.

The international doc and specialist factual market will now be held in the Thai capital from November 1 to 4, after having secured a partnership agreement with Thai pubcaster MCOT and Thai prodco Panorama Worldwide.

The 2016 edition of the Asian marketplace, which draws more than 720 documentary professionals, was initially scheduled to take place in the Chinese city of Suzhou from March 21 to 24, but was delayed by organizers in January after encountering logistic problems.

Asian Side was founded in 2010 as the first international documentary marketplace in Asia designed to maximize investment and copro opportunities through a raft of panel sessions and one-on-one meetings, as well as a pitching forum and exhibition space.

“Given the growing interest shown by the international documentary community in the dynamic Asian factual market, we had to be sure that Asian Side of the Doc keeps on providing a relaxed and friendly environment to foster valuable networking and business relationships with major players in the pan-Asian industry,” said Sunny Side Markets CEO Yves Jeanneau in a statement.
