    downtown naperville site analysisThe library is located 35 miles west of Chicago in Naperville, IL. The Treuse Library connects the city hall to the downtown through void, both physically and visually, and as it grows, it extrudes outward visually connecting it to adjacent Naperville landmarks. The diagram to the right shows the connections from the City hall, through the site and to the downtown, as well as the connections from the clock tower and field of honor. This idea of connectivity is carried through the design.

    The library consists of four main floors, with three suspended partial floors. The suspended floors are used as community spaces. The first floor is used by the public and is in association with the exterior plaza that stretches from the city hall to the downtown. The second floor is designed for administration, and contains conference rooms and storage spaces suspended above. The third floor represents a traditional library. The stacks are placed to allow natural daylight in, as well as allowing views out. The suspended conference rooms or meeting rooms can be rented out by the public, such as a girl scout meeting, zumba class, sewing club or an AIA meeting. The fourth floor represents the technology level, consisting of a media bar and computer lab.The suspended floors could range from a gaming room or video room, to a 3D print room. The suspended floors allow to make more intimate, single story, spaces. For example, a childrens corner is located below a meeting room, creating a more closed atmosphere, where the stacks are located in the two story space.

    The escalators are placed so that exit points are directly related to connectivity through interior to exterior. The escalators arrive at view points of the city, and changing as it goes up.

    The structure system consists of a primary system which includes beams supporting the internal loads carrying it out to the primary diagrid system. The facade is supported by the secondary diagrid system. The building also contains four support cores.

    The library is designed to have exterior exterior connection through the void that connects the city hall to the downtown and the extrusions to the adjacent points of the city. It also contains interior interior connection through the offset slabs, that create a relation from floor to floor, as well as the connectivity from the

With the lack of downtown in College Station, the project is located on University Dr. across from the northgate district which serves as the downtown for the City of College Station. This location gives the opportunity for people to enjoy dinner, drinks, a night out, etc while attending a concert. The location also gave the building and opportunity for an outdoor amphitheater which flows into the northgate district..

    FLOOR PLAN

    The building consists of two structural grids to emphasis the two different grids of College Station and Texas A&M. The primary structural grid is a steel structural system located and exposed in the interior of the building. It was chosen to contrast with the opposing concrete system and to keep the interior light and transparency. The secondary structural system is a concrete shell that represents the beat of the Aggie War Hymn. The concrete system also creates an arcade to emphasis the entrance from various directions of the site.

    The interior is organized to keep private spaces located on the south wall, which backs up to a service drive and an on campus dormitory, the remaining spaces are kept open to achieve site lines and open up to the north for natural daylight and views of northgate.

  • MUGHAL COMPOSITE BOW WALK

    The design charrette is to create a design based on the Mughal weapons. The design demonstrates an awning for the walkway leading to the Taj Mahal. The design combines the ideas of a composite bow which uses bamboo and elephant tusks to create a compression piece combined with a string to create kinetic energy for the arrow. The elephant tusk inspired compression members, which are represented by the structure and the tensile structure represents the string in the bow. The tensile structure gives the illusion of a transparency but with repetition creates solid.

  • The charrette was create a high speed rail station for the proposed train running from Houston to Dallas in Texas. The clients wishes were to get as many people on and off the train as fast as possible. The design solution was to create a center, elevated walkway to guide users unto multiple escalators along the train to quickly enter as well as exit the train.

    The project focused on creating circulation through the Haruyoshi area. Prior to the Il Palazzo, the are remained an unsafe and lower end community and the circulation circled just south of this proposed site bouncing between the market on the southern end, and the Sumyoshi Shrine on the east side. after the completion of Il Palazzo it sparked the area to develop a nicer community, including the completion of Canal City which contains major retail and public spaces. The goal of this proposed portion is to extend the circulation paths of the two major developments and blend it into the entire neighborhood including the southern market and Sumyoshi Shrine. The project focused on four main areas to extend the circulation; both the east and west riverbanks, the southwest five-way intersection development, and the path leading up to the shrine. The current site included run down, unappealing river fronts, with lost opportunities for such a valuable site. The current situation also cut off any pathways that might run parallel to the river and fails to signify an importance to the Shrine. The west side of the riverbank was developed to honor both the

    traditional row style architecture as well as the contemporary Fukuoka style. It contains multiuse spaces and incorporates an elevated walkway as well as lower level riverbank walkway. The walkway continues the pathway for pedestrians visiting Il Palazzo. This structure seamlessly leads into a structure that acts as a community space containing a cafe, library, and other collaborative spaces. The building focuses its views on the other important structures surrounding the site; the shrine, Canal City, and Il Palazzo and creates an appealing destination for the popular five way intersection. On the East side of the riverbank, a funnel like structure is continued from Canal City. The curvilinear form is continued from the retail area into this portion of the site. It incorporates existing restaurants and shops in the lower portion, with a green walkway on the top. The structural system incorporates light wells that allow natural light to penetrate to the bottom area. The intersection and east bank structures ultimately lead into a tree lined walkway which focuses less on the adjacent bustling city and more on the quiet entrance to the shrine.

  • client goalsThe current Stages theatre was a converted ring making factory. The theatre currently has an arena and thrust style theatres that are to be included in the new design. The big change to the theatre spaces are to do away with four interrupting columns on each corner of the stage. The client would also like to include a place to gather, discuss and appreciate the theatrical arts for performers and guests. The client would also like the building to provide additional functions for the building to be used throughout the remainder of the week, as well as serving multiple needs and functions at one time. The client also preferred a train station and industrial feel to the building to tie back to its original factory roots.

    The intern project was a summer long, one day a week project that was completed with the help of Gensler. The project was to propose a scheme to help the Stages Theatre company better understand how they could reimage their existing building. The front building is a historic landmark and all sides needed to be kept. The project was then presented to the client.

  • WESTCHESTER STATIONProject: Design Innovation Campus. The students developed a

    design innovation campus in the Bronx, NY. The unifi ed master plans combine an urban park with three typological structures - a

    design innovation center, a community center, and a mixed-use residential area that includes a train station.

    The master plan project was a semester long, fourth year, partner project for each typology. Westchester station is a highlight of

    an example for the train station and living component of the innovation center.

    site information

    As a master plan we analyzed the site. First where it is located in the world and its relation to the Bronx. The site consists of the Bronx River, the east and west banks of the river Concrete Plant Park, and extends to the Metro North, over the Sheraton Expressway, and to the Subway. We then looked at the logistics surrounding the site, population as well as the ages of the people living in the Bronx, poverty levels, car ownership, as well as the surrounding transportation

    stops. We also looked at contents of the site such as high tide and low tide and temperature of the water. We concluded that the majority of the visitors to the site would come from public transportation and an access point is needed from the train stops to the site.

  • We also looked into the type of innovation center we wanted to concentrate on and ultimately chose using water as a renewable resource. We wanted to use something that was already on the site rather than bringing outside resources in.

    Concrete Plant Park was a run down part of town and is currently being revitalized to become a gathering destination.

    The plan is to use a wetlands method throughout the site to filter the water, pump the water into silos to store, process, and clean the water, then pump the water out to use throughout the site.

    Creates a more pedestrian friendly and accessible interface that accommodates a high speed rail with different modes of transportation and connecting it to the surrounding suburban and urban areas.

    The use of daylighting, ventilation, and interactive outdoor spaces creates a space that is comfortable both in winter and summer and day and night.

    The train station combines different forms of rail transportation with office buildings that slice into the structure like a bridge. It successfully integrates fast movements from the station with opposing stationary visitors that are accessing the business buildings.

    The train station needs to split the medium to create an access bridge that connects to both train rails. Creating this central datum allows both locals and visitors to cross the means of transportation and enter the site and access the train rails easily. The exit entering the site leads right into the concrete plant park as well. The train station is centrally located

    ITERATION 1 - STACKED

    All three iterations are based on the urban grid and connecting the site to the urban context. The stacked iteration keeps both the living and the train station above the means of transportation. The Train station splits the Metro North and the Subway and creates a bridging datum that brings people on and off of the

    trains and to the site. It has vertical connections up to the platforms for the Subway and down to the Metro North. It continues up to a restaurant and outdoor space and eventually to the rooms. Here all rooms get a view of the site as well as a view of the Sheraton Expressway and the two train rails.

    This iteration connects East 165th street and Haviland Ave as well as the east and west side of the site. It allows the community to access the rails and site without having to go completely around. A central datum is created to connect upward to the Subway and Downward to the Metro North. There is a multi use space in the center of the train station. As the bridge continues across the Bronx River there is an outdoor space that leads to the restaurants. There are longer term apartments below the bridge, and short term stay above the bridge.

  • WESTCHESTER STATIONSITE

    The bridged iteration was chosen for its most practicality. It separated the train and the living making the living more private and allowing the opportunity to create a plaza in front. The train station houses multi use space in the center and connects to both the Metro North and the Subway. It created a passage way from the east side of the site to the west which allows visitors and locals to travel across the bridge creating a shorter distance, rather than around. Westchester Station contains glass silos that contain water

    that is being cleaned and processed to use throughout the site. The bridge slices right past the silos allowing each user to experience the concrete plant park as they walk through. The bridge leads to an outdoor space that is enclosed by restaurants, shops, and cafes with housing located above. The housing contains voids throughout each level for outdoor spaces as well

    9. The living is extruded to accommodate all of the researches studying at the innovation center

    10. The living is made up of three different size rooms, hotel like rooms, located in pink, for a few days stay, small apartment size rooms, located in blue for a couple weeks stay, and one bedroom apartments, in green, for long term stay

    15. The Bronx River is enlarged in the site to accommodate for the wetlands fi ltration system

    16. Some green space is being taken away because of the fi ltration system, so it is reapplied as a green deck in front of the living

    17. For privacy, the living is raised and shops, cafes, and restaurants are placed to enclose the green space deck below the living

    14. A make up of the facade is shown above. The vertical aluminum panels are the outermost later, followed by steel structural bracing, glass curtain wall, and the rooms, the yellow indicate the outdoor spaces.

    11. Westchester Station is focused on connecting the site with the urban grid. It bridges between 165th E St. and Watson St. The living facade is designed to replicate the urban grid. The three major streets surrounding the site; Sheridan Expy Westchester Ave. and Bruckner Expy. Are extended and mirrored on the facade. The facade of the living is a curtain glass wall, structural bracing, and vertical aluminum panels that

    protect it from the harsh west sun. The point of intersection of the three main streets creates an outdoor space located throughout the apartments and creating a void that continues all the way through, yet still contains the aluminum panels. Where the street grid lies there is no facade treatment and this void carries all the way through the building.

    The plan shows where the light wells are located on the ground level. There is a board walk lining the river, a deck above and clear silos containing water that allow light to travel through to the board walk

    The roof structure in the train station is designed to allow the summer winds in on the west and allow them to flow through and out of the station.   • The site is located on the boardwalk of the Barcelontea Beach. It is surrounded by the a neighborhood on the north and west side, opens up to a plaza on the south side, and the boardwalk on the east

    The concept for this placa was derived from the perception of pedestrians in the area surrounding the site. Observations of the manner in which local residents and temporary Barceloneta visitors would commute through the surrounding area were considered

    The temporary traffic shows the paths that would be taken from the city center located on the left, as well as the surrounding bus stops, B, and Metro stops, M. The red represents the optional paths that can be taken to arrive at the site

    The red indicates the visibility of the site from the residential perspective. The Darker the red, the more visible that location on the site is to the locals

    The combination of local and temporary traffic and the visibility of the site from the beach is portrayed in red.

    SITE CONCEPT

    The goal is to use visibility in order to bring people into the market. Each view point to the site was taken and the visibility was mapped with its deflections and visible parts.

    The views that are disrupted by of the trees that are blocking the view of the site from the plaza located to the south of the site are then marked above and diagrammed below.

    The visibility of the site from the residential area above is mapped out above and a corresponding diagram is mapped below.

    Three major pedestrian viewpoints were considered and diagrammed. These views from the boardwalk, neighborhood streets and plaza next to the site were laid on top of each other treating obstructed views as voids. This was analyzed and serves as the foundation of the project. The darker the red the more visible the spot is to all three viewpoints. The white areas are spaces that no pedestrian can view the site.

  • The column placement, site, and paneling all resemble the diagram. All aspects are based on visibility, yet function for the various uses of the site. The Market structure consists of columns that act as acoustical barriers. These columns are placed according to the visibility of the site and oriented and turned in order to accommodate both the transparent visibility while on the site, yet is an attraction to visitors approaching the site from far away. The columns support perforated metal panels that are used to filter the sun in various ways, the more visible the area is, the more opaque the panel is. There are four different types of panels, voids for

    non visible spaces, large perforation for low visibility, small perforation for more frequent visibility, and opaque sun panels for full visibility. The roof structure varies in height also dependent upon the visibility, the more visible, the taller the structure is. The columns support the panels that are not in contact with a column by suspending them off a hinge joint from the top of the column and connecting a rod to the panels by a similar hinge joint. The panels that have contact with the columns are welded to the columns and connected to the suspended columns by spider connections.

    The site is accommodated to make use for a flea market, concert area, and multi-use plaza area without any adjustments to allow the activities to function properly. The site is sloped to create visibility from points in contact with the boardwalk to points near the neighborhood where the elevation is the lowest. The sloped site also creates a flow for people to move throughout the shopping markets to create less traffic during these times. The column placement also allows power supply if necessary for the marker stands, and to power lights that are located at the bottom of the column that shine upwards to create

    a pathway and flow throughout the site. The power used is being supplied by the energy collected by the sun panels placed on the opaque places on the roofing system. The market booths surround the columns, shown in the plan, creating paths for the visitors to move throughout. The columns then turn counterclockwise to create an acoustical barrier and also allowing the columns to face parallel to the boardwalk to draw more attention to the site to attract visitors. The paneling that is suspended from the columns creates shading during the day.

  • This light tower was inspired by Henry Ford and is located near his birth place resting upon the bay in Lake Michigan. It focuses on using industrial style designs to incorporate characteristics of the Model T car. It differentiates public spaces such as the living area, kitchen and dinning versus the private spaces, bedrooms and

    bathrooms. The public spaces act as the cab of a car while the private resembles the hidden spaces, such as the hood and trunk of a car. The grill like side, exhaust pipe chimney, windows, and headlight like skylights allowed different lighting and shadows to occur throughout the light house

    The lamp was made entirely out of one piece of four by eight sheet of plywood and contains all natural connections, no bolts, screws, nails, glue were used and can be easily taken down. The light gives off indirect lighting is accommodate with attached side tables. The string is weighted at the bottom so that the light can be adjusted up or down depending on the setting.

    SHADOW BOX

    The residence of Art House in Dallas, Texas by Lake is the concept for the shadow box. Its unique floor plan and elements were abstracted and transformed throughout the box. The bottom layer is the original floor plan, with red gradient celebrating the great

    views out of the house. The plan is rotated and extruded to express the structural load bearing walls and main axis of the house. The plan is transformed once more to show how the unique roof shapes adds to the complex design of the house.

  • PROFESSIONAL WORKI have interned at BRW Architects for fi ve years. BRW specializes in municipal work in all parts of Texas and has 103 award winning fi re stations. I have been able to work on all parts of a project through my time at BRW and it has allowed me to fully understand how a building goes together from start to fi nish. As well as my contribution in architecture I have been able to work on the marketing side of things including bringing projects in, working on RFQs and marketing material used at conferences and client meetings.

    The summer of 2015 I was given the opportunity to intern in the Gensler Houston offi ce. I worked in the corporate interiors department and was able to work with BBVA. My tasks included fl oor plan layouts, interior elevation, material selection, and measuring existing spaces. During my internship I also worked on the Stages Repertory Theatre in a group of four.

  • Orange Central Fire Station is a 22,000 sq. ft. building housing not only firemen of Orange, TX but also is equipped with an administration sector. I was able to design the clock tower, be involved in the design process, both interior and exterior elevations, deciding finishes, and the furnish, finish, and dimension plans. The project came in over bid and the clock tower was originally eliminated until a family in the community fell in love with the design and sponsored it. The project was completed in the spring of 2012

    South Padre Island Fire Station No. 1 is a 25,000 sq. ft. station located on the island. It is designed with the public spaces such as treatment rooms on the first floor, living spaces on the second, and administration on the third level. The station is complete with a walk out roof top that has views of the entire island. I photographed the entire station after it was completed in september of 2012.

    Willowfork Fire Station No. 2 is a 14,000 sq. ft. building housing six firemen on shift. I was involved in the design process, both interior and exterior elevations, deciding finishes, and furnish, finish, and dimension plans. It was recently completed in the Fall of 2013

  • Aldine Fire Station is located outside of Houston, TX. It is a 12,000 sq. ft. building that houses 10 fire men on shift and due to location the station strived for more of a contemporary feel versus a neighborhood style. I was involved at the initial part of the project in creating floor plan schemes with corresponding elevations and presenting them to to the client. The project is currently in CDs.

    ALDINE FIRE STATION NO. 21

    Port Arthur Transit Authority is a 14,000 sq. ft. building located in Port Arthur, TX. It houses administration services, it is located in the downtown at the main bus stop. With a low budget we alternated between various metal paneling to give a more industrial feel, yet allowing the building to have a more interesting facade. I took part in the design as well as the program and layout of the building. I also worked on plan, roof, wall, window and door details, wall sections, finish, furnish, dimension, and base plans, building sections, and exterior and interior elevations.

    Pearland Fire Station No. 3 is a 18,000 sq. ft. building located in Pearland, TX. It houses 6 fire men and 2 ems on shift. Pearland had a few restrictions from the city, the design had to be 100% masonry, all walls facing the road had to contain 25% glass, the building must be LEED silver, and there are 7 giant historical oak trees that must remain on the site. The plan was tricky because it had to accommodate the lay out of the trees, therefore, the bedroom wing swings of at a forty five degree angle. The program and plan was already determined when I was brought on the project, but I worked heavily on the design of the buildings as well as the detailing that took place on the elevations. I also worked on plan, roof, wall, window and door details, wall sections, finish, furnish, dimension, and base plans, building sections, and exterior and interior elevations. The project is almost complete and will go out to bid in early January of 2014.
