Ashton Glen Farms - Sheep Genetics

Ashton Glen Farms is at Clinton, South Otago. We farm 400 hectares of sheep, beef & grain, with a sheep genetics programme. Farming with 2 of our 3 sons and their families.

Our stud comprises of Coopworth, Beltex, Suffolk and Suftex ewes. Coopworth & Beltex rams.

The Coopworth stud began in 2004 with the purchase of purebred ewes. Our stud over the past 15 years has had input from the Coopworth genetics of Tahatika, Colhoun, Tamlet, Lincoln University & Blackdale Studs. The Coopworth is bred here for its maternal worth traits + meat. Mothering ability, milking and survivability along with a strong emphasis on growth and meat yield. These are the key are the key values; together with a well-structured animal. We believe the Coopworth makes an excellent maternal base for sheep farming . Easy care lambing and excellent mothering, producing good lambs.

The terminal ram breeding has developed rather quickly. As sheep breeders you can’t help exploring what would happen if we crossed “this with that.” We purchased three purebred Beltex rams with the intention of seeing what happens crossing the Coopworth with them to further improve the meat value. With the development of terminal sires in mind, we mated stud Suffolk and Suftex ewes & hoggets with the Beltex and have ended up with three worthy crosses.

We have had a mandate of zero ewe drenching for many years and a selective and reduced drenching programme for lambs. The aim is to develop a robust animal (resiliant & resistant). Reduce the workload & associated costs.

What is on offer this year are the progeny of these three crosses as well as the purebred Coopworth.
