Success and Failures

The data dictionary and configuration files were successfully created in Pathfinder Office and uploaded into the Geo7X system. Through navigation within the Geo7X, the 5 points, 3 areas, and 2 line features were collected and the attributes were recorded. Each operator successfully recorded one point feature and one line or area feature. Back in the lab, the data was transferred to a computer through a communication cable and uploaded into Pathfinder Office. The USGS topographic map was downloaded from the State of Alabama Geological Survey website and the aerial photo was downloaded from Canvas. By following the methods, the points were successfully overlaid onto the topographic map in Pathfinder Office and onto the aerial photo in ArcGIS.

Though the features are correctly oriented with respect to each other, when placed over the topographic map the greenspace area is larger than the image of the greenspace and all of these features are slightly shifted from the corresponding topographic image. Similar size and shifting issues resulted in the aerial image. This could be due to the accuracy of the topographic and aerial images’ georeferencing. The biggest failure was during the recording of the Goodwin Statue area. The area of interest was only 3 or 4 feet in diameter. The logging interval set for area features was 3 seconds, which was too large an interval for the statue. After 3 seconds, the operator had already made it halfway around the statue, which caused an inaccurate representation of the area. When the recording of features was repeated, the operator walked slower around the statue in order to fix this problem. However, they walked twice around the statue, creating a ringed area within the ArcGIS map instead of an actual area. Through this failure, it was discovered that a small logging interval or slow pace was needed for recording small area features.
