THE EVENTMcColl Center for Visual Art’s signature fundraising luncheon, Ashes to Art, will be held over three days, October 23, 24, and 25th, at the Center, 721 N. Tryon Street. Check-in begins at 11:30; the luncheon begins promptly at 12:15, will last one hour, and will include an “ask” for support. Optional tours of the artists’ studios and the Center’s state-of-the-art facilities are available after the program. Sponsors have the optional opportunity to have representatives attend the event.

The featured speakers at Ashes to Art will be alumni artists Fahamu Pecou and Anthony Schrag. Fahamu’s paintings are a commentary on contemporary and hip-hop culture. His work has been featured in solo exhibitions nationally and internationally including Art Basel Switzerland. The work he created while at McColl Center was most recently shown at a solo exhibition in Paris. Fahamu was recently honored with the Emerging Artist Award at the National Black Artists Festival alongside master artists Romare Bearden, Thornton Dial and Richard Mayhew. Anthony is a performance and installation artist who was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in the Middle East, the UK and Canada. In questioning the traditional art experience, Anthony creates interactive work that instigates new understanding by subverting and manipulating the expected physical experience of a designed space. Anthony received his MFA from the Glasgow School of Art. He has exhibited internally including the Schalter Gallery in Berlin.

THE PURPOSEAshes to Art is McColl Center for Visual Art’s largest and most vital fundraiser. All funds support the Center’s mission of advancing art, artists, and the creation of contemporary art. McColl Center for Visual Art is rated in the top three of approximately 500 artist residency centers nationwide. The Center provides free education, outreach and exhibition programs for more than 22,000 people annually. McColl Center for Visual Art firmly believes that art and artists are catalysts for positive social change. The Center’s artists are making a measurable difference in the Charlotte community in areas such as education, environmental remediation, human services, business innovation and more.
