Mr. Alcott Mr. Alcott has been teaching History for the past 16 years in Arizona. At Chaparral, he teaches three periods of World History and Geography and two periods of Sociology. Mr. Al-cott is excited to be at such a large school for this upcoming school year. In 1981, Mr. Alcott met his wife while at the Chaparral versus Saguaro football game. In the future, he hopes to coach high school competitive tennis, which he plays with his friend Ms. LeDuc. When he was five, Mr. Alcott starred in a cereal commercial.

Ms. Blasi Ms. Blasi teaches choir at Chaparral and piano at Arcadia. “It has been my dream to work as a high school choir teacher. I am so blessed to have the opportunity to work at such a wonderful school,” Blasi said. So far, Ms. Blasi is very impressed at the desire of the students to learn and how motivated all the students are. Ms. Blasi cannot wait for all the wonderful trips she gets to attend with the choir this year.

Mrs. Sendlein Mrs. Sendlein has been teaching in both middle school and high school for the previous 16 years. At Chaparral, she teaches Algebra 1 and Algebra 1 Support. “I had been at Cocopah for 16 years and had always wanted to experience high school. I enjoy working with older students and was ready for a change. I was always impressed with the school and faculty, so I was thrilled with the opportunity to teach here,” Sendlein said. “All three of my children graduated from Chaparral and I was always impressed with the school and faculty, so I was thrilled with the opportunity to teach here.” She always loves the challenges to teaching students and feels it is important in shaping kids lives.

Mr. Zarda Mr. Zarda has been teaching in the Scottsdale District for seven years as a History teacher. At Chaparral, he teaches World History and World Geography and American History. He wanted to return to teaching high school and there were some openings at school. Mr. Zarda loves the school spirit, and he really enjoys working with his students. “Here I can go into depth with my students. My current students do not need as much sup-port, so that allows me to build better lessons,” Zarda said. He loves the football games and is really enjoying the school year.

Mr. Peterson The new Varsity Head Basketball Coach, Mr. Peterson teaches Algebra 1 and French 1. He has been teaching for the past 10 years at various high schools, and he really enjoys working with his students. One of the Mr. Peterson’s favorite parts of Chaparral is the covered park-ing. New Birds on the BlockMs. Katie O’Boyle is a new Assistant Principal and the Director of Student Activities. Mr. Tom Eubanks is an

Assistant Principal and the new Athletic Director, and Ms. Leslie Rold is in the College and Career Center.

Q: What is your previous experience work-ing with SUSD?A: I was a math teacher at Arcadia High School for seven years- I taught Algebra I and Algebra II. I was also the student government teacher there, which was prob-ably the most fun as a teacher I’ve ever had –planning dances, assemblies, homecoming, that kind of stuff. I love student activities and working with high school students.Q: In what ways is being a teacher different or more challenging than your new adminis-trator position?A: Teachers have a lot of work trying to care of sometimes 160 kids- grading, and keeping track of all their needs and assignments. I don’t miss that. But in the office, I do miss the interaction with the kids. Also in the office, every day is different; you never know what it going to happen, whether it is going to be a day full of discipline or a day full of parent phone calls or whatever, but I just try to stay positive and just stay focused on what is at hand. I also really like the other administrators I work with and getting to know them.Q: What are your goals you plan on accom-plishing this year?A: To become part of the Chaparral family, for people to know that I’m here to stay, that my heart is in it, to get to know the teachers better so we can be a good team, and to at-tend as many activities I can.Q: How has it been taking on Firebird word?A: It has actually been really easy because Ethan Greenfield is awesome. He and Mrs. Harris in the library do most of the legwork. I love working with that stuff because in Arcadia they have an outstanding video pro-ductions, a studio and all that stuff, so when I see Firebird Word, it just makes me excited because I’d really like to work with them to improve their equipment and get it looking as professional as possible.

Q: How have you enjoyed becoming a firebird?A: It’s been great. I really, really like all the teachers, the students have all been fun, and I’ve enjoyed getting to meet all the athletes who I’ve met and worked with over the last few weeks. Q: What are your previous experiences with athletics?A: I played baseball in college at the State University in Louisiana, and I coached at Deer Valley High School with my dad for two to three years. I was the head coach at Mountain Ridge High School for seven years for baseball, the cross-country coach at Hillcrest Middle School for six years, the bas-ketball Coach at Hillcrest for eight years, and then I was the athletic director at Hillcrest for the past three years. Other than that, not much.Q: What are your goals for the school year?A: Well, being the athletic director, you re-ally want the teams that you watch over to be successful. I don’t want to try to re-invent the wheel because Chaparral has been very successful in almost everything they’ve done over the years. So really my plan for the year is to learn from and work with the coaches and help them improve and just continue the excellence in athletics they have here.Q: What is your previous experience work-ing with SUSD?A: Zero. Actually I was working in my other district when I saw the application pop-up and filled it out immediately. It was funny the way it worked out. When I started get-ting my certificate to be an administrator, I told my wife that I wouldn’t just take any job I wanted a big school like Hamilton or Chap-arral, so when I saw that list I knew that it was special, and I immediately applied.

Q: Why did you want to work at Chaparral?A: I used to be the college admissions person for University of Arizona that used to call on Chaparral, so I used to visit here all the time, and I always knew that when I came here that it was such a great school. I just thought “that would be a great place to work someday.” I’m [a] graduate student intern as well, so last spring I needed an internship in school counseling, and I thought Chaparral would be perfect. Betty Gullen has been a mentor to me, so that was a big part of why I came to Chaparral.Q: Do you have any goals you hope to ac-complish over the year?A: To make the [college and career] center more approachable to the students, I don’t know if a lot of students even know what ex-actly the college and career center is; I want it to be a warm and friendly environment and to have the kids feel comfortable coming to me as a resource for any help with college information. We have about 70 colleges com-ing this fall, and this is where we are meeting with students, so I really want to make the center organized and inviting.Q: What would you like the students to know about the college and career center?A: Just to come visit! Come use it! I want it to be seen as a friendly welcoming environ-ment more than anything. I’m going to be making a lot of changes to the center over the next month, so hopefully it will look a lot different. My plan is to make it very user friendly and interactive, and just all the different things the center deal with, not just college admissions but things like financial aid and scholarships; to be a resource for the students.

C’est La Vie

Throughout the years, Chaparral’s students have embarked on an annual journey overseas and come back fascinated by Europe and prepared for their future. Students not only gain experience, knowl-edge, and culture, but also learn to make the leap from adolescence to adulthood after graduating. Even though the excursion is not run through the school or spon-sored by the district, the Europe trip has gained popularity since Mr. Dicus first started it. Mr. Dicus began the trip so that graduated stu-dents can have eye-opening experiences and be immersed in foreign cultures before they go off to college. The experience of traveling abroad is different for every person. Whether it is maturing or discovering oneself, the trip to Europe is a positive way to become more aware of the world we live in and ultimately become prepared for the next stage in life. “First and foremost, [the students] get to see a lot of history, and they are very active, we have something planned for them every day weather it is white water rafting, hiking, or going to the Louvre, or seeing the Roman Coliseum,” teacher and chaperone Mr. Basila said. The teachers that go on the trip guide students in their travels, but they believe that it is part of the experience for the kids to become self confident and, therefore, leave a lot of room for them to prove themselves and their good judgment. “I believe it is a great experience that way, plus it’s just getting to know who you are, your classmates, and the whole experience of just being together in a group like that is great,” Basila said. The students who have gone to Europe claim that it is a life chang-ing few weeks and strongly urge those who are considering this opportunity to go. “It is a way to escape the Chaparral bubble and see the world in a new way,” graduate Zoe Smith stated. “If you can swing the cost of it, I recommend everyone go; it’s a great way to end your senior year and grow up a little before you’re a freshman again.” Chaparral students who plan to go on the trip look forward to leav-ing the normal and embracing Europe, for maybe the first and only time in their lives. “[I am mostly looking forward to] getting a lot of a experience of Europe, and it’s a once in a life time thing because I might never go

there without this trip,” Alex Arnold said. Other students similarly look forward to this special opportunity and hope to evolve as people. “I think I will gain an overall understanding of different cultures. I have never traveled overseas, and it will be such an amazing experi-ence,” senior Kaitlyn Hertzog said. The trip includes traveling to six different countries and differs from year to year, but the cost of the trip is many students’ deciding fac-tor. For some, the generosity of their parents will get them the plane ticket to Europe next summer. “Cost really isn’t an issue; my parents are paying for it,” Arnold said. Even though the experience may be priceless, other students work and save to cover the cost. “Cost is most definitely an issue, so my parents made a deal with me to pay half of the trip. To get money for the other half, I worked all summer and am continuing to work this year,” Hertzog stated. Another appealing aspect of the trip is the idea of being with friends abroad. “It’s a good cultural experience that I get to go on with my friends,” senior Lindsay Kotin said. However, while this may be a deciding factor for some, it is not to important to other students who wish to gain experiences regardless of what their friends do after graduating. “A majority of my good friends are going, and I know that they will only add to the amount of fun I will have, but they are not the deciding factor for me going on the trip. The main reason why I am going is to see what’s out there, and being there with good friends is just a bonus,” Hertzog stated. Overall the trip is a good way for graduates to become acquainted with a new independent life and, ultimately, grow in depth as a person. “I [enjoy most] watching the students grow up, change, become young adults, and watching them learn how to behave into a different environment than what they were used to the last 17 or 18 years of their lives,” Basila said.

E ating at a different Mexican, Italian, or Chi-nese restaurant is the closest most students get to a new culture; however, exchange students

attending or leaving Chaparral for a new country experience the true meaning of cultural diversity. Leaving their home for a new country, a new culture, a new language, and new people takes bravery and willingness to expand their horizons and awareness of the world. Lars Schnittker, an exchange student, came to Chaparral from a small town in West Germany. Ma-jor cultural differences in Germany include a drinking age of 16, no specified curfew, and the frequent use of public transportation. In contrast with Chaparral policies, no security guards or IDs exist at his school in Germany. The opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities also differ from Chaparral High School. “In Germany, I participated in Jazz Band and Orchestra, but [they were] public because there are no clubs or sports at my school. I have school until 7, and nobody wants to stay after that time. If somebody wants to join a club, they would have to participate in a public one,” Schnittker said. A large part of adapting to new surroundings for the exchange students is appreciating and making use of American culture. “It is totally different here. Everyone [in Germany] is asking about the heat. [In Germany] it is 60 to 70 degrees, and that is considered hot. The high school here is huge. [In Germany] we have two buildings, eight grades, and 2,000 students. But I love America,” Schnittker said. “I would definitely [travel to America again] because it’s a great way to learn about a new country. I am already thinking about coming back to Arizona. I know a girl who wants to graduate in Germany and come to America for college, and I am starting to think the same.” In Germany, opportunities to participate in ex-change programs can be scarce, so students use their resources to increase their chances of travelling to the country they desire. “I am in a program called Waterweed, so I only have to pay my flight and my trips. Otherwise it wouldn’t be possible because usually for the year, you pay 15,000 to 20,000 dollars for a year. Only 15 people get accepted by Waterweed and there were 40 applicants. I was so excited when I got accepted be-cause there are so many applicants for America, they don’t always go where they want,” Schnittker said. Not only do the students from other countries ben-efit from exchange programs, but Chaparral students also have the opportunity to experience another culture by travelling to other regions of the world. Lily Strider, a Chaparral student, went to Asuncion, Paraguay in South America in August 2011 and returned to America in the beginning of July of 2012. Part of experiencing a new country is appreciating the lifestyle that is taken for granted back in their

home country. “Well, [Paraguay] is a second world country, so I got to see how our education differs from theirs. They don’t have quite as good as an education, and a lot of kids don’t even get to go to school,” Strider said. Most exchange students travel to other countries in order to increase social interactions and their knowl-edge of the world. “[After travelling to Paraguay], I am a lot more confident now, and I am also fluent in Spanish. I re-turned with a lot more maturity and worldliness than my peers. I began to understand how the world works instead of just how our country or state works,” Strider said. The exchange students participate in international travel for benefits such as freedom and the perks of being immersed in a new culture. “[Travelling to America] helped me to meet new people, learn English, have a great senior year, and just be American. I even get some independence from my parents because I have the opportunity to live away from them for a year,” Schnittker said. For the sake of promoting and complementing Ro-tary exchange programs, International clubs were de-veloped in at Arcadia, Coronado, Chaparral, Desert Mountain, Notre Dame, and Saguaro High School. “Since 2003, we have sent students from all five high schools [in SUSD] to study overseas for a year, and we have had foreign exchange students attend all five high schools in Scottsdale. They also attend a high school in that city, meeting local students, learning their language and being immersed in their culture,” Max Rumbaugh Scottsdale Rotary Youth Exchange chair and past President of the Scottsdale Sister Cities Association said. The International clubs are also affiliated with the Scottsdale Sister Cities Association. The Associa-tion assists the relationships with the six sister cities of Scottsdale, which includes Alamos in Mexico, Interlaken in Switzerland, Cairns in Australia, On-tario in Canada, Haikou in China, and Marrakech in Morocco. The Rotary Exchange Program was established to provide international awareness and cultural diversity in Scottsdale and other countries of the world. “The reason [Rotary Exchange Program] was started was to provide high school students with inter-national experiences that would make them better global citizens. We believe that young people can be the foundation for peace if they become friends with young people overseas. They usually report that their year overseas was the ‘best year of their life.’ They often find their passion for college studies and future careers while overseas,” Rambaugh said. The exchange programs give students the oppor-tunity to expand their horizons and achieve new milestones in their life. “It’s not just a year of a life, it’s a life in a year,” Schnittker said.

As the 2012 presidential election comes closer each

day, the public display of political opinions seems to

be at an all time high. Thanks to the convenience of

social networking cites like Facebook and Twitter,

students can easily share their every thought about the

election.

In the last few months, Facebook has become flooded with statuses

like, “Yay Obama” and “Romney>Obama.” The ability to instanta-

neously publicize our political thoughts certainly has some amount

of impact on us, but does the goal of the author correlate with the

result?

“I think that sharing your political opinion on your timeline is fine,

and it allows people to get to know you better,” junior Peyton Old-

enburg said. “But when ignorant posts about political issues clog up

everyone’s newsfeed it becomes more than just a little annoying.”

Many complications seem to develop when political debates

transpire on social networking cites. For example, political issues

are almost always complicated matters that have been pondered and

debated for decades.

“The real trouble with political fights on Facebook and Twitter is

that most political issues are too complex to be properly discussed in

that kind of a setting,” Oldenburg said.

A few conflicts have occurred in which students from Chaparral

have tried to deliberate about intricate political matters. It is in situa-

tions like these that conversations can become hostile and rude.

Political statuses and tweets can turn from innocent to vicious with

just a few comments or replies. People seem to appreciate their right

to publicize any and all thoughts that run through their minds, but

some believe that this privilege is exploited, which, in turn, causes the

political aggression so often found in social media.

“I think that Facebook really isn’t the venue to be pushing those

beliefs,” senior Gabriel Miller said. “I understand some people are

very active politically, and if they are active on a campaign, then I

understand them making a post. But when they are aware that their

post could provoke something with other people, I think that is inap-

propriate.”

Social Networking Phenomenon

Social networks have massive clout in

swaying political opinions. Newsfeeds have

become clogged with outspoken political

views or those denouncing the outpouring of

arguments that ensue from differing stand-

points. People who track these kinds of things

say that this election cycle is the first in presi-

dential history to be measurably influenced

by social networking on both sides of party

lines.

“I think social media gives everyone a

platform to express their political opinions,

but people and teenagers especially alter their

views to the most popular views or the views

that have received the most ‘likes’ rather than

the views that have been researched and fit

with their actual ideologies,” senior Liz Boyd

said.

Social sites affect social behavior, but the

degree that these sites influence real-life

situations has never been uantified in real-

world applications until researchers tested

60 million U.S. Facebook users during the

2010 congressional election cycle. According

to Time Magazine, the study discovered that

340,000 more voters went to the polls than

would have normally because they received a

message showing the pictures of their friends

with “I Voted!” button.

This study gives an actual representation

to the amount of people actively influenced

through their social network. According to

the same study, seeing a visual connection

between Facebook friends and going to the

polls influenced more people than a voting

ad alone, indicating that the power of social

media is increasing the popularity through

friendships.

“The social media has definitely increased

my political knowledge. It keeps me up to

date on what’s going on because I wouldn’t

know much without Facebook and other

sites,” senior Jonah Weiss said.

Others cite less-than friendly encounters

with posts that can be offensive or extremely

vocal about subscribing to specific opinions.

“I believe that everyone can have their

own opinion, and I respect that. But all of

those people just post about the mistakes that

Obama has made. They don’t realize all the

good that he has actually done. Also they

don’t really talk about how Romney would be

a good president,” senior Ammar Raza said.

The presidential candidates have caught on

to the shift in American media focus, Romney

purchasing a ‘trending topic’ for #Believei-

nAmerica and #RomneyRyan2012 on twitter

for $120,000 each, according to Discovery

News. These promoted icons suggest that

these topics are popular among twitter users

when actually they’re paid for by Romney for

President. According to twitter’s blog site, this

is the first time a candidate has invested in

twitter’s vast network of people by purchasing

popularity.

Obama recently launch a #forall social

media campaign using the popular app and

sharing tool Instagram. This appeal to the

Millennial generation, notorious for low vot-

ing percentages, has cast the President in a

relatable light.

Social networking had much influence in

Obama capturing the youth vote in 2008,

and since that first election, his fan base has

grown considerably in people and popularity.

“Social media has definitely played a huge

role in the election because the candidates are

doing whatever they can to downplay their

opponent,” Weiss said.

Social media not only boosted campaigns,

but also demonstrates popularity and gen-

eral support for specific policies. After both

conventions, twitter and Facebook became

abuzz with posts regarding both candidates’

speeches and those of their wives. According

to twitter, Obama set a social media record of

52,756 tweets per minute during his speech,

part of the count during the last day of the

Charlotte convention of four million tweets

- more than the entire Republican National

Convention received the whole week.

Despite this apparent lack of social media

sway, Romney has certain tricks when it

comes to power of Facebook. When search-

ing for Obama, a sponsored Romney page

shows as the first result; the same occurs

when searching for Biden. This paid adver-

tisement has heavily increased Romney’s

presence on Facebook and social media in

general, according to Forbes.

The evolution of social media has given

candidates a seemingly unlimited voter base;

New York Times estimates that 155.7 million

Americans use Facebook. This incredible new

platform for sharing political ideology has

become a major strategy in the election cycle,

and both presidential candidates are vying for

the top spot - both online and in reality.
