MASS FOR THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The Mass for the Anointing of the Sick is scheduled for July 7th at 8:00 am at Ascension. Fellowship in the parish Community Room will follow Mass. Who is a suitable candidate for being anointed? The Sacrament of the Sick is intended for those who are in danger of death or are seriously ill, as well as those who are awaiting or recovering from serious surgery; the elderly who are notably weakened and dealing with the debilitating effects of aging, even if no serious illness exists. Sick children are permitted to receive the Sacrament provided they have achieved sufficient maturity to understand the nature of the Sacrament and have the desire to receive it. The Sacrament of the Sick is not intended for those with minor ailments such as the common cold, an upset stomach, or a scratchy throat. If there is a question about the severity of the illness, the benefit of the doubt would be given to the person requesting the Sacrament. (Pastoral Care of the Sick #8-12, 15)

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Adult: When have you felt more fully alive by giving of yourself to another? Youth: When have you been able to put what someone else needs ahead of what you want for yourself?

Our First Reading from Second Kings, chapter 4, features Elisha. You may recall that Elisha was plowing in a field when the prophet Elijah called him to follow him. Something happened at that moment and Elisha chose to do it, which is what brought him to this point in his journey (as reported in today’s Holy Scripture). We often address the fact that each of us is called as well. Our calling, like Elisha’s and like those of Christ’s Apostles, is really not that much different. Christ said, “Follow Me,” and the Apostles basically dropped everything, ceased pursuing what they were doing — in some cases with good jobs and vocations — and followed Christ. We are called to follow the Lord from the moment of our Baptism, but how many of us actually take that calling seriously? It is not just a question of hearing the call; the key is whether we are listening for it? It is there, but we must be aware of it in order to respond. Elisha’s call and our calls are signs of God at work. God has a plan for each of us. We are the means by which God’s work is continued in our parishes, in our communities, and in the Church. God’s ministry on earth will be carried out and accomplished. None of us is the entire ministry; we can all be replaced. However, by the same token in God’s eyes we are absolutely necessary. Are we ready to respond? Are we ready to be disciples of the Lord?

The $2.5 million match was an overwhelming success!

• We met the $2.5 million match on May 24th.

• Our donor decided to extend the match through May 31st.

• As a result, we matched more than $3 million, totaling more than $6 million raised in the month of May. That brings our

campaign total over $33 million! We are less than $3 million away from our break-ground goal.

Due to the overwhelming success of the match fund and the many people who would still like to take advantage of this amaz-

ing opportunity, the donor has graciously extended the match to a total of $5 million through July 15th. The remaining $2

million match will put our campaign total over $37 million.

We are so close to reaching this milestone campaign Watch for an announcement later this summer on the

goal. Take us over the top! matching donor and the break ground date!

REAL PRESENCE RADIO Known as one of the first televangelists, Venerable Fulton Sheen was an American Bishop known for his preaching and especially

for his work on radio and later, television, from 1930 through 1968. He was loved and admired by people of all faiths as he tackled

the important topics of that time. His message is just as relevant today and we are blessed to have recordings of those broadcasts,

which are aired weekly on Real Presence Radio. He combines humor with solid Catholic teaching on topics, which continue to

impact our lives and the world in which we live. Tune in each Saturday evening at 8:00 pm on 91.7/91.3 FM.
