Engineers Without BordersThe Ohio State University student chapter of EWB returned to their project site of Las Pilitasin San Pedro Puxtla El Salvador in early September The purpose of the trip was to inspectthe latrines constructed during their previous trip in March An assessment was also done onthe feasibility of biosand filters as an interim solution to provide the community with potablewater Biological and chemical tests were done on the water to determine levels ofcontamination Materials pricing and sand samples were also collected for futureimplementation trips The team also met with local officials for support to move the projectsforward as well as community members for additional feedbackThe presentation will discuss the results of the tests and the outcomes of the trip as a wholeIt will include several pictures of the community and activities completed during theassessment

Thank you to those who were able to attend ourOctober joint meeting with the StructuralEngineers Association of Ohio (SEAO) and theAmerican Concrete Institute (ACI) It included agreat presentation about the NationwideChildrenrsquos Hospital Patient Tower project byRichard Geers of Jezerinac Geers amp AssociatesThe presentation included a really great video ofthe construction progress from the beginning ofthe project by way of time-lapse photography

Money magazine debuted its list of the top 100 jobs inAmerica on Monday Oct 11 and Civil Engineer came inat number 6
The magazine cited development in countries like China andIndia as well as Americas own infrastructure needs increating a shortage of qualified local engineers Thisshortage has created a bolstering demand for US talent forhighways bridges sewer and water systems and powerplants Rankings were based on factors such as pay futurejob growth and quality of life The magazines story andrankings can be found by clicking HERE

On October 20 2010 the Mike OCallaghan ndash PatTillman Memorial Bridge which bypasses the HooverDam opened to traffic The project links the US statesof Nevada and Arizona by spanning the Colorado River1600 ft downstream from the Hoover Dam The bridgepart of a $240 million four-lane bypass that will reroutetraffic for 35 miles from the two-lane bottleneck on US93 across the Hoover Dam is located approximately 25miles southeast of Las Vegas Once the bridge isopened the roadway crossing the Hoover Dam will beclosed to through traffic
The bridge is the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States The twin archribs are connected by steel struts The composite design using concrete for the arch and columnswith steel construction for the roadway deck was selected for schedule and cost control while stillbeing aesthetically compatible with Hoover Dam The arches are made of 106 piecesmdash53 perarchmdashmostly cast-in-place 24 ft at a time

Dr Nair will discuss someunusual and innovative solutions from hisbridge engineering practice These include anunbalanced bascule bridge where eliminationof the counterweight and associated pit morethan compensated for the additional lifting effortrequired (a design that has been awarded a USpatent) a skewed hanging pedestrian bridgean unusual minimum-area design for a SinglePoint Urban Diamond Interchange innovationsin the design of the worldrsquos longest tied-archbridge and the top-down construction of asubway station under an existing multi-storybuilding Also included will be an exploration ofthe evolution of arch bridge bracing systems
and the application to bridge bracing of the newDirect Analysis Method of design for stability
Dr Nair received his PhD in civil engineeringfrom the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1969 In hismore than 40 years ofengineering practice DrNair developed thestructural designs of manymajor bridges and buildingsincluding the longest tiedarch in the world and a 90-story 1047-foot tall buildingnow partly constructed inChicago His projects havewon numerous awardsincluding four AISCNSBAPrize Bridge awards and sixStructural Engineers Association of Illinois MostInnovative Structure awards He has won aLifetime Achievement Award from AISC He isa former chairman of the Council on TallBuildings and Urban Habitat and is currently thechairman of the AISC Committee onSpecifications Dr Nair was elected to theNational Academy of Engineering in 2005

Dr Nair will discuss someunusual and innovative solutions from hisbridge engineering practice These include anunbalanced bascule bridge where eliminationof the counterweight and associated pit morethan compensated for the additional lifting effortrequired (a design that has been awarded a USpatent) a skewed hanging pedestrian bridgean unusual minimum-area design for a SinglePoint Urban Diamond Interchange innovationsin the design of the worldrsquos longest tied-archbridge and the top-down construction of asubway station under an existing multi-storybuilding Also included will be an exploration ofthe evolution of arch bridge bracing systems
and the application to bridge bracing of the newDirect Analysis Method of design for stability
