ASCAME Tourism Commission, working to create wealth and jobs

The Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Shipping of Malaga, that I am honored to chair, is paying a specific attention to one of the main economic sector worldwide: the tourism sector.

In this regard, the Chamber of Malaga is proud to belong to ASCAME and to chair the Tourism Commission whose aim is to promote a common, sustainable and high-quality tourist destination. As such, our Chamber has organized the 4th Mediterranean Tourism Forum, MEDITOUR 2010 and has participated in MEDITOUR 2014 which took place in Barcelona on November 27th.

In 2030, it is estimated that 1,800 million tourists will travel around the world, 264 million of which will go to the Mediterranean Europe, 46 million to North Africa and 149 million to the Middle East. Moreover, the estimations of the international tourism growth percentages for 2010-2030 are 2,3% for the Mediterranean Europe; 4,6% for the North Africa and 4,6% for the Middle East.

It is also relevant to underline the importance of the tourist sector for the EU, which has imple-mented tourist-based projects or staffed to work on these programs, for an amount of 108 million € for 2014-2020.

According to the WTO, the tourist sector is the one which generates most jobs worldwide. That’s why, if we take the appropriate steps in order to develop this industry by making it more competi-tive and of high quality, we will create favorable conditions to obtain the expected future of well-being for all our Mediterranean countries.

Meditour 2014: Developing a Green LebanonThe three days of the annual Mediterranean Week of Eco-nomic Leaders gathers hundreds of international players within the economic field, bringing together the private and public sector by inviting both international and re-gional business leaders, entrepreneurs and policy makers from the private sector, as well as policy authorities and international organizations. The goal of the summit was to discuss the economic situation of the Mediterranean region and the related policies, especially Euro – Medi-terranean policies. The summit also has an environmental mandate, with a focus on green economy sustainability.

A major economic sector in all the Mediterranean coun-tries is tourism. In the north and south of the Mediterra-nean Sea countries, tourism accounts for 8.5 million jobs in direct and indirect employment, employing in total about 15% of the working population.

The MEDITOUR forum, whose sixth edition spotlighted Lebanon, has encouraged the creation of a Mediterra-nean Tourism Agency, as a main tool for the efficient de-velopment of a brand specific to the Mediterranean. This initiative will allow to reach a better profitability of the planned investment in the sector for the coming years, already estimated to be more than a billion dollars.

Lebanon has all the makings of a major tourist destina-tion – the beaches along its Mediterranean coast, its well – preserved historical sites hosting Roman, Greek and Phoenician ruins from thousands of years back in time, the iconic Cedars – nearly extinct in the rest of the world – and the capital Beirut, a cosmopolitan city that is also a regional hub for nightlife and culture.

The possibility of Lebanon to become a center for eco-tourism received a special attention in this Week event. The participants in the special session on Lebanese tourism discussed sound strategies regarding green and sustainable development of the tourism sector, a main pillar of the whole process. EUROMED Invest in Barcelona supports Tourism in the Mediterranean

Green tourism is one of the several priority niches iden-tified by the EUROMED Invest project as a strategic area of investment in the Euro Mediterranean Region

In the framework of the Mediterranean Week of Eco-nomic Leaders, the 6th edition of the Mediterranean Tourism Forum (Meditour) took place in Barcelona on the 27th of November last.

This is one of the key European co-financed projects which aims to stimulate private investment and economic relations in the Euro-Mediterranean area, primarily relating to five key sec-tors: Tourism, Transport & Logistics, Agro-food, Water & Alternative Energies and Cultural & Creative Industries. Indeed, reinvigorating the Tourism sector in the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the project’s principle goals.

The forum has represented the most important interna-tional platform for networking in the Mediterranean re-gion, and provided an exchange of expertise and views about the latest trends in Tourism.

One of the key debates of the forum focused on the importance of establishing a Mediterranean brand to support the complementarities of the tourism sector of both Mediterranean shores.
